Questions & Answers

MICHAEL H : Can I use this on Pearl Multigrade?MARTIN L : That combo will work well for general purposes. I generally prefer Adonal developers, but that is a matter of taste and artistic expression.DON R : shouldn't be any problem - I like the luquid concentrates versus powders ...CANDICE E Q : Yes! Works great.JACK S : Yes you sure can.JEREMY D : I had no trouble with it at all. Left it in just a tad longer than the suggested time allotment (Same with Fixer) to be safe and pics are still looking great a few years later.PHILLIP Y : Michael, Sorry that I cannot answer your question. I have never used this developer on Pearl as I prefer graded papers. I'm just a fairly advanced amateur/enthusiast. I would suggest that you contact the paper manufacturer or Ilford. It seems that the term "universal" should count for something. Sorry I could not be of more help. Phil
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?ANDREW C : I ran outGENO S : Needed for new darkroom setupGALE W : It is the best and Most convenient chemistry for my useSADIE H : classANDREW C : I use a lot of this developer to develop Foma R100 film through a reversal processJOSEPH P : because i used ilford paper 5x7 and 8x10

Good and flexible developer

This developer is pretty economical in cost but, it does expire relatively quickly once you open the bottle. It works great at the 1:14 dilution even it if it a little slower than the 1:9 time wise. I would suggest that you really stick to Ilford's recommendations with regards to it's shelf life. It's got nice crisp whites and blacks. It is very predictable when fresh and easy to use. I was able to get a couple prints out of a 8mo old bottle, but it was incredible unpredictable, no clear whites. My impressions were that for shelf life, the multigrade was better. If you do not print very often, I would suggest using another paper developer OR condense this down each time you use it to limit oxidation.

About Ilford Universal Paper Developer for Black and White, 17 fl oz (500ml)

Take your black and white photography to the next level with Ilford PQ Universal Paper and Film Developer. This high-quality, professional-grade developer is a liquid concentrate specifically designed for dish or tray developing of all resin coated (RC) and fiber-based (FB) black and white photographic papers.

Crafted from a unique blend of dimezones and hydroquinone derivatives, this durable developer is known for its excellent keeping properties and efficiency. Unlike the Ilford Multigrade developer, the PQ Universal developer imparts a slightly warmer tone to your photographs, adding a touch of classic charm to your monochromatic images.

Not only is this reliable developer perfect for use with Ilford's own range, but it also works seamlessly with technical films from other manufacturers. It's an ideal choice for dish or tray developing of general-purpose sheet films when a rapid working, high contrast developer is needed. However, it's worth noting that this developer is best suited for projects where a high degree of enlargement is not required.

Please note that the PQ Universal is not recommended for processing general purpose 35mm and roll film formats, or for high-temperature or machine processing applications. Trust in the Ilford PQ Universal Paper and Film Developer to deliver consistently impressive results for your black and white photography needs.
