Questions & Answers

Shopper : Years ago, I got the impression that Chromogenic films could not be processed in regular darkroom chemicals. True? Also, it was said that shooting XP2 at ASA (ISO) 200-300 would cause the film to "grain down" providing finer grain and detail. Does the same hold true for XP2 Super? ThanxANDREW R : This film requires development is C-41 process chemistry. Standard black and white chemistry doesn't work. There are home development kits for C-41 process available from several different vendors.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JAMES H : This can be processed as B&W in C-41 (color print film) chemistry or for different looks, using B&W developers. The grain will be incredibly fine and the contrast spectacular!!JARED C : Chromogenic B & W is much cheaper for me to have processed and I almost always get good results from Ilford. Wide latitude, fine grain and good contrast. I'm retired and on a fixed income, so I have to be careful about what I choose .GEORGY Z : curious to try outCarmine T : BEST PRICE EVERMATTHEW S : It is a good sharp film I likeChris N : Don't want to pay extra for black and white processingPAULA S : Need a b&w film to be processed locally c-41.David K : I just love this when shot at 200 ISOGAVIN S : It's easier to process and my students don't notice the difference between this and true B&W filmDEVAN H : experimenting with different brands and speeds of film

Ilford XP2 is great film!

XP-2 is an underrated black and white film that is a great value. It is sharp with good exposure latitude and can be processed in color or B&W chemicals. Either way it is excellent at an excellent price!

Ilford XP2: the cannot be overrated B&W film

Ilford XP2 is a fabulous B&W film which can be processed like color film at your local processor, or in B&W chemicals at home or in the lab. Either was it looks great with sharpness and good latitude: blacks are black, whites are not blown out and there is plenty of shadow detail. The price is right, also!

Great for flatbed scanning

Maybe because of the emulsion thickness, this works wonders with Epson flatbeds. It's easy to see the gain in sharpness compared to an HP5.

Bw type film with all the advantages of color negs.

Easy and cheaper processing. And scans well since digital ice works with this film to cut down on dust issues.

One of my favorite b/w films!

This is a beautiful film - someone wrote it is a "days of summer"- film, and I couldn't agree more. It likes light but gives wonderfully sharp results without being overly hard - in good light I always get great results. Definitely recommended, you won't be disappointed.

One of my favorite b/w films

Wonderful black and white film, sharp, contrasty without being overly so (compared to Delta), great film for sunny days. Very low grain even though it is ISO 400. Like most films, doesn’t handle underexposure too well, but apart from that, beautiful results. Definitely can’t go wrong with this film.

How I avoid developing my own BW film these days

Because we have a local inexpensive lab that runs the right color chemistry for this film, and develops every day, I decided to experiment with XP2 in various vintage toy plastic cameras, and found that, with a goodly amount of exposure it could indeed sometimes exhibit some of the magical silvery qualities of standard BW film in these quirky cameras. (My darkroom needs a good cleaning before I'll be developing a traditional BW film there.) I used Vuescan to obtain digital files to adjust, and plan to make digital negs for later GSP's. This is affordable, easy, quick and fun.

Best film ever

Great quality film in pixels and in ease. It does not get rigid when loading. It works great with d76 Kodak developer. Best photos I've had in a while. Great to print on 16x20

A quality B&W neg film with easily available lab processing

Ilford makes a lot of high quality black and white silver negative films. I have and still do use them, however, for those who lack a home darkroom for developing will find fewer and fewer choices for commercial processing. This is where XP2 comes in. It will give you an actual black and white negative for scannng or printing, and cab be processed by any lab offering C41 processing for color negative film.

Good for people that may have a favorite film camera but want their work digitally post-processed & printed.

When we travel to Europe, I carry XP-2 & have it processed in-country. My advice for this film is to expose it @ EI 200 for sunny days; ISO 400 for overcast conditions and ask for normal processing. I carry processed negatives through security without the fear of x-rays ruining my unexposed film. When back home, I can scan negatives to be adjusted in P/Shop & uploaded to the 'net, or print negatives in my d/room. A versatile film. Good for people that may have a favorite film camera but want their work digitally post-processed & printed. It can be home developed using a C-41 kit, or can be commercially processed.

This is a great way to experience film, if you've never tried it before

This is a great way to experience film, if you've never tried it before (and let's face it, there are a lot of those folks these days). It provides a fairly tight grain structure and good depth. I find it especially complementary in urban/street photography or in other situations involving subjects with lots of texture. Maybe not as useful if you like landscape with large expanses of sky, where the grain may intrude (although I'm heading out tomorrow to do just that). And when you're done, your local drug store can process it C-41 and probably scan it relatively cheaply too.

I like the film's contrast, sharpness, latitude and tonality.

I bought this film for shooting black and white photos with my Diana F+ camera. I like it because it is processed using C-41 chemistry. So it can be processed anywhere they process color negative film. I like the film's contrast, sharpness, latitude and tonality.

I like this film.

I am impressed with this film. I am shooting this with an EOS A2 and 24 - 105mm f/4L lens. I am using it for portrait work primarily at this time. I am getting the results I want. Also, being C41, if I run out of time, I can take it to the drup store for developing. By the way, the film expiration date on my film is Dec. 2013.

My favorite B&W film

This film requires some practice getting used to its grayscale. Not very flattering for portraits, but really cool for landscapes. Very emotional B&W film for still life and landscapes.

impressive dynamic range and convenience

This film is one of those products that make me keep my film cameras active. I used it as 120 roll film and as 35mm, e.g. outdoors, indoors, wedding, fine art studio photography. It is one of the most convenient and flexible b/w films I have used, and it delivers consistently high quality negatives. Its main advantage consists in its outstanding dynamic range that makes it possible to take pictures from 50 iso to 800 iso on the same roll of film, with the same development, getting for each p...

Over the years, the XP-2 Super Sharp, Fine Grain, Black and White Professional Film ISO 400, 35mm, 24 Exposures has become a go-to choice for photographers seeking high-quality, sharp, and crisp black and white prints. This film is renowned for its fine grain and fast speed, making it versatile for a wide range of photographic subjects.

The XP-2 Super excels in situations with a broad subject brightness range, delivering exceptional results every time. It boasts an improved exposure latitude compared to its predecessor, the XP2, offering enhanced negative contrast for optimum black and white print quality.

One of the standout features of the XP-2 Super is its ease of use. It's simple to expose and process, thanks to its compatibility with C41 type processing chemicals, typically used for color negative films. This makes the XP-2 Super a chromogenic film, where the image dyes are formed during development, rather than being pre-existing in the film or added later.

The XP-2 Super's wide exposure latitude is a result of the unique relationship between exposure and grain in chromogenic films. When exposed at EI 400/27, it achieves the perfect balance of sharpness and grain. Even when down-rated or overexposed, the XP-2 Super maintains finer grain, contrary to conventional films.

The XP-2 Super 35mm film is coated on a 0.125mm acetate base and is available in 24 or 36 exposure DX cassettes, or in bulk film lengths of 17 and 30.5 meters. It's supplied in DX Coded cassettes, making it suitable for all 35mm cameras.

The XP-2 Super roll film, coated on a 0.110mm clear acetate base with an anti-halation backing, is available in 120 lengths and is edge numbered 1 to 19. In line with international standards, the XP-2 Super roll film features a red exposed label to signify color negative processing.

In summary, the XP-2 Super Sharp, Fine Grain, Black and White Professional Film ISO 400, 35mm, 24 Exposures is a top-tier choice for photographers seeking superior black and white prints with a fine grain and wide exposure latitude.
