Questions & Answers

Shopper : how much film is in each box?JONATHAN O : 1 roll. 36 exposures.JEFFERY S : Enough for 36 picturesANDREW R : This item is a single 36 exposure roll of 35mm film.
chelsie l : where do you delevop your images when using this film?Tony M : Photo developer in Glendale, Flomax in San Gabriel. Any one that develops color film can develop xp2.DANIEL H : You can get your film developed at any place that does normal C41 processing. It doesn't need special black and white processing. Take it to wallgreens or your local pro lab, or send it to Dwaynes in Kansas. Chances are, any place that processes film, can process this film. If the guy behind the counter says "IDK if we can processes this...." just point out the C41 on the side of the roll.DAMON E : I use a local developer in town. There are a variety of places that develop 35mm B&W online, so be sure and Google for a few nearest you (East/West coast).KENNETH W : It's C41 process like any color negative film, so I think you can have it developed anywhere. I send mine to a well-known, very large online film processing business (that does not do any traditional black and white, slide, or specialty processing). They just develop it and send me back my prints.KIMBERLY M : I was able to get mine developed at a Target.MIKE W : Armadillo Camera a store in Lubbock Texas processe the film and Prints in house.JIM B : Many large department stores like K Mart, Wall Mart and Costco run these with other color negative films that require the same C41 processing. Most photo labs do it as well. The prints from the department stores automatic machines will not be exactly black and white but will probably have a color cast to them. Photo labs are the best choice for a black and white photographs.JIM T : This film uses C41 processing, the same as any other print film, and can be developed anywhere that you have your color film processed. The images become B&W during the developing process.ARTHUR W : Any store which provides C-41 processing.STEPHEN M : Sorry, I never used it - it's still sitting her on my desk!MICHAEL B : Students get this film developed at any convenient drug-store film developing service-- we have used this film in an introductory film/video production course that has a 35mm still photography component, but not darkroom access. More advanced students in our photo department hand-process c41 film using Jobo motorized tanks.JIM B : I use Penn Camera. Any 1 hour film developing drug store will do it.JIM B : I have the film developed at my local Costco who does a nice job. They return the processed negs and a CD of lo rez images which I load on my computer to review. My selects are then scanned by my in my home Minolta film scanner. Works well.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?DAVID S : For ease of development with C-41 Processing...KENNETH M : I love the grain and contrast, plus can be developed in color processor machines at local camera shop.VICTOR R : i got it cause my friend is into photography and im doing it for secret santaJOHN M : Because this is excellent film and everything else is on backorderJACKIE B : Just bought a film camera and a professional photographer recommended this film because it can be processed easily by photo storesKEVIN S : C-41 processMOSHE G : Easy to process because it is c-41DAVID B : Had used HP5, this one looked coolKhalifa A : Keep it on pleasUlises M : For fine art street photographyEDWIN M : I used a kodak film that was c41 process, and was impressed. Figured I would try the ilford version.JONATHAN H : Amazing tones and sharp photosMohammad H : I chose this because I find C-41 processing easier.RENE R : skin tonesWILLIAM K : Never tried it but just read a review that said it is much finer grain than traditional B&W films. We will see!!DEBORAH V : Because it uses C-41 processing, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm just getting back into film photography, after using digital for quite some time.Abram F : It's my first time shooting black and white film and I felt like this is the best one to start out with. Very excited.AUTUMN D : to try something newGlenn F : Great scans.JEFFREY W : recommendation by a friendJOE M : Smooth, beautiful film.JEFFERY S : Great stuff, easy to get processedJOHN H : One of the few b&w films that can be processed at consumer grade/1 hour labs. Can be rated from 200 to 1600 ISO without special processing. I've even had it up to 6400 with decent results and no push! AMAZING and versitile film that every film shooter should have ready in their bag for a moment's notice.RIC D : Had not tried their C41 film, had tried Kodak BW400CN. This film is better than Kodak as it has a clear base so one could print true B&W. This produces wonderful results. Has more contrast and pop than Kodaks' BW400CN.

Ilford XP2 is great film!

XP-2 is an underrated black and white film that is a great value. It is sharp with good exposure latitude and can be processed in color or B&W chemicals. Either way it is excellent at an excellent price!

Ilford XP2: the cannot be overrated B&W film

Ilford XP2 is a fabulous B&W film which can be processed like color film at your local processor, or in B&W chemicals at home or in the lab. Either was it looks great with sharpness and good latitude: blacks are black, whites are not blown out and there is plenty of shadow detail. The price is right, also!

Great for flatbed scanning

Maybe because of the emulsion thickness, this works wonders with Epson flatbeds. It's easy to see the gain in sharpness compared to an HP5.

Bw type film with all the advantages of color negs.

Easy and cheaper processing. And scans well since digital ice works with this film to cut down on dust issues.

One of my favorite b/w films!

This is a beautiful film - someone wrote it is a "days of summer"- film, and I couldn't agree more. It likes light but gives wonderfully sharp results without being overly hard - in good light I always get great results. Definitely recommended, you won't be disappointed.

One of my favorite b/w films

Wonderful black and white film, sharp, contrasty without being overly so (compared to Delta), great film for sunny days. Very low grain even though it is ISO 400. Like most films, doesn’t handle underexposure too well, but apart from that, beautiful results. Definitely can’t go wrong with this film.

How I avoid developing my own BW film these days

Because we have a local inexpensive lab that runs the right color chemistry for this film, and develops every day, I decided to experiment with XP2 in various vintage toy plastic cameras, and found that, with a goodly amount of exposure it could indeed sometimes exhibit some of the magical silvery qualities of standard BW film in these quirky cameras. (My darkroom needs a good cleaning before I'll be developing a traditional BW film there.) I used Vuescan to obtain digital files to adjust, and plan to make digital negs for later GSP's. This is affordable, easy, quick and fun.

Best film ever

Great quality film in pixels and in ease. It does not get rigid when loading. It works great with d76 Kodak developer. Best photos I've had in a while. Great to print on 16x20

A quality B&W neg film with easily available lab processing

Ilford makes a lot of high quality black and white silver negative films. I have and still do use them, however, for those who lack a home darkroom for developing will find fewer and fewer choices for commercial processing. This is where XP2 comes in. It will give you an actual black and white negative for scannng or printing, and cab be processed by any lab offering C41 processing for color negative film.

Good for people that may have a favorite film camera but want their work digitally post-processed & printed.

When we travel to Europe, I carry XP-2 & have it processed in-country. My advice for this film is to expose it @ EI 200 for sunny days; ISO 400 for overcast conditions and ask for normal processing. I carry processed negatives through security without the fear of x-rays ruining my unexposed film. When back home, I can scan negatives to be adjusted in P/Shop & uploaded to the 'net, or print negatives in my d/room. A versatile film. Good for people that may have a favorite film camera but want their work digitally post-processed & printed. It can be home developed using a C-41 kit, or can be commercially processed.

This is a great way to experience film, if you've never tried it before

This is a great way to experience film, if you've never tried it before (and let's face it, there are a lot of those folks these days). It provides a fairly tight grain structure and good depth. I find it especially complementary in urban/street photography or in other situations involving subjects with lots of texture. Maybe not as useful if you like landscape with large expanses of sky, where the grain may intrude (although I'm heading out tomorrow to do just that). And when you're done, your local drug store can process it C-41 and probably scan it relatively cheaply too.

I like the film's contrast, sharpness, latitude and tonality.

I bought this film for shooting black and white photos with my Diana F+ camera. I like it because it is processed using C-41 chemistry. So it can be processed anywhere they process color negative film. I like the film's contrast, sharpness, latitude and tonality.

I like this film.

I am impressed with this film. I am shooting this with an EOS A2 and 24 - 105mm f/4L lens. I am using it for portrait work primarily at this time. I am getting the results I want. Also, being C41, if I run out of time, I can take it to the drup store for developing. By the way, the film expiration date on my film is Dec. 2013.

My favorite B&W film

By fercott

This film requires some practice getting used to its grayscale. Not very flattering for portraits, but really cool for landscapes. Very emotional B&W film for still life and landscapes.

impressive dynamic range and convenience

By urs

This film is one of those products that make me keep my film cameras active. I used it as 120 roll film and as 35mm, e.g. outdoors, indoors, wedding, fine art studio photography. It is one of the most convenient and flexible b/w films I have used, and it delivers consistently high quality negatives. Its main advantage consists in its outstanding dynamic range that makes it possible to take pictures from 50 iso to 800 iso on the same roll of film, with the same development, getting for each p...

Bring your photography to life with the XP2 SUPER, a professional-grade, sharp, and fast black and white film. This fine-grain film is versatile, suitable for a wide range of photographic subjects, and excels particularly when capturing a broad subject brightness range.

The XP2 SUPER offers an improved exposure latitude compared to its predecessor, XP2, delivering exceptionally sharp, crisp prints. Its superior highlights and enhanced shadows contribute to an increased negative contrast, optimizing your black and white print quality.

Ease of use is a standout feature of the XP2 SUPER. It's simple to expose and boasts an impressively wide exposure latitude. Processing is straightforward, as this black and white film utilizes C41 type processing chemicals, similar to color negative films.

Printing with the XP2 SUPER is a breeze. Its negatives are printed on black and white paper, just like conventional black and white negatives. As a chromogenic film, the dyes that form the image are developed during the processing stage, rather than being pre-existing in the film or added afterward.

The XP2 SUPER's wide exposure latitude is a result of the unique interplay between exposure and grain in chromogenic films. The optimal balance of sharpness and grain is achieved when the XP2 SUPER is exposed at EI 400/27. Interestingly, down-rated or overexposed XP2 SUPER negatives yield finer grain, contrary to what is typically expected with conventional films.

The XP2 SUPER 35mm film is coated on a 0.125mm acetate base and is available in 24 or 36 exposure DX cassettes, or in bulk film lengths of 17 and 30.5 meters. It is supplied in DX Coded cassettes, making it compatible with all 35mm cameras. The XP2 SUPER roll film is coated on a 0.110mm clear acetate base with an anti-halation backing that clears during development. It is available in 120 lengths and is edge numbered 1 to 19. Adhering to international standards, the XP2 SUPER roll film features a red exposed label to signify color negative processing.

In summary, the XP2 SUPER is a high-quality, versatile, and user-friendly black and white film that delivers consistently excellent results, making it a top choice for professional photographers and enthusiasts alike.
