Questions & Answers

Shopper : Please advise.... Am I reading that this lens fits DX bodies? I was going to purchase for my j1.CRAIG H : This lens is a NIKKOR VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 CX lens. This lens is NOT a DX lens. It is designed to fit a Nikon 1 or CX mount camera only. There is not even a Nikon adapter to make it fit a DX or FX mount camera. I doubt the image circle is large enough even were an adapter available. In fact there is no 70-300 DX lens made at all, only the 70-300 FX that can mount on a DX camera, but this is not that larger and cheaper lens. You can use the FX 70-300 on a Nikon 1 camera with the FT1 adapter and retain both VR and AFS capability, but you'd have a somewhat larger lens. I'm not sure where you read the CX lens fits DX bodies, but that's not true, obviously.WILLIAM P : It will not fir a DX body or an FX body. The lens you reference is for a Nikon 1 series camera....V1, V2, V3 or J1, J2, J3 and J4. It is the equivalent of an 810mm at longest when used on an Nikon 1 series camera.MICHELLE Z : The reviews here are for 2 different lenses. I purchased the Nikon CX 70-300mm for my V1 in October. It was on back order before then. I love it in good light. Images are sharp. It takes a while to get used to focusing. At first I only did manual because it seemed I was missing too many shots. Then I found if I was zoomed out, focused and then zoomed in, it was fast in auto focusing and I did not miss any shots. It is expensive, but worth it if you want to take pictures of birds and wildlife. On your J1 is will be like having an 810mm at 300mm.DONGMING B : yes it is for APSC. But, J1 is NIKON, so different mount, you cannot use this lens.ANDREW R : Fits Nikon 1 series mirrorless cameras.
Shopper : is this lenses good for sports photography?HARVEY R : The lens is good for sports photography. If you set your Nikon 1 camera body to "Continuous," you can take many photos per second and capture sports action.ERIC L : This lens focuses fairly quickly in good light and should be good for daylight sports. I use mine with a Nikon 1 V2 for birds in flight with good success on sunny days.GREGORY D : I don't do sports photography, but I would assume it would be good for that. It has excellent reach, is sharp and can capture moving subjects at a high frame rate. It might not be great in a dark gym / arena for basketball or hockey or at night for football as it's aperture when extended is 5.6, bit you could set the ISO at a high number to compensate. It is a good lens.JOEL L : It is a very long lens, so I think a tripod or monopoly would be helpful, but that is the case with any lens of this length. I have been very happy with the lens and have used it extensively for nature photography.CAROL C : I do a lot of sports photography, but generally use my Nikon 4s. I haven't had much of a chance to use this one for sports, although I have done some action with it. It works quite well. The real problem is the limitations in general for the Nikon 1 system. It is good for what it is -- small, light, easy to carry -- but you won't get the same results as you get with the DSLR system.CHARLES T C : I tried it at night for football and it did not function very well. But the stadium was very dark. I think during the day it would be ok

its a really sharp nikkor lens

its a really sharp nikkor lens however on my Nikon D7000s I find it hunts & pecks for even stationary subjects if that doesnt bother you or you arent shooting moving subjects its a great lens the "G" gelded works on about 90% of nikon cameras its a FX full frame lens or 35mm capable lens add 1.5 X crop factor or 42 to 450mm for DX crop cameras

Good economy lens

I have been using this lens on my 2 cameras for years now, it’s a lightweight and quick focusing when lighting is good, slower focus in poor light, but still gets the job done!

Amazing!

Fantastic lens. Sharp as a tack, and the VR works perfectly. I bought it mostly for Air Shows, where the Nikon 1's fast focusing shines, but it's so much fun to use that I've been using it for all kinds of photography: birds and animals, details of old buildings, even portraits. It's big for a Nikon 1 lens, but tiny for it's reach. A bit expensive, but worth every penny

Great first impression!

Initial impression is that's it's a beautifully clear, fast autofocusing well balanced lens; just getting started using it, more to come as I get more experience with it.

Performs well

This lens was also on the lower end of the pricing scale but it has performed extremely well. I take astrophotography pictures using this lens with a Nikon D810-A and the images are much better than I expect. Even when pointing straight up there is no sliding out of focus. I would definitely recommend this lens.

Christmas Gift

We purchased this as a Christmas gift for our adult daughter. It was on her wish list. We are unable to give an honest evaluation since we aren't the ones using it. Purchase process was easy and very quick and the lens arrived safely and well packed. The evaluation above reflects the purchase process and not the lens itself!

Inexpensive Lens purchased to test my resolve to spend a few grand on a pro lens.

I have been flirting with the idea of dropping a few grand on a pro tele lens in the 300 to 400 mm range. My fear was/is that I would not use the beast enough to justify the amount spent. This lens was my fall back position to test my resolve to bet my retirement on a pro lens. To be sure it is a bottom shelf plastic lens that would be vulnerable with rough use. The absence of VR necessitates a tripod, and f4.5 isn't going to win any races and low light environments are not its forte. That said the photos have been sharp and the fun factor is high. For occasional use I think this is a very practical choice. If I find I am shooting a bunch at extended ranges I will undoubtedly upgrade. If I only use it on rare circumstances it will stay in my bag for a long time.

The clarity of the lens is stunning

The clarity of the lens is stunning. This lens spends most of it's time on my little V2, it's as good as any of the full frame prime big lenses I have owned. Incredible reach, and it's sharp wide open.

a goo price fort an old lens

over all it is a good lens for normal life. also it is from a old lens, so it is is not sharp and focus soft, for example, it is not as sharp as 18 - 55 mm AF-S lens. But for the price it is an option for beginner and hobbyist to get a telephoto zoom lens.It is bot good and bad at all.

Powerful, lightweight & compact

My review title basically says it all. This lens brings power associated with larger DSLR lenses to the mirror-less Nikon1 world. Fast autofocus and good vibration control. Can't wait to get more use with it this Summer.

A good len for the money

I bought this len in 2013, still use it with my D80...taken excellent boxing photos indoors and outdoor especially during day light, very clear. It has no VR and autofocus does work with D80 so that a plus. I just bought the D7200 with two lens deal but I am also keeping this len for back up. You can really beat the price for the value of photos.

FEATURED REVIEWS

Love this lens

By Ashley R.

The title sums this lens up well. I love this lens, and a good upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens. Although, I wish I could have bought the VR version, I am completely happy without it. My images generally turn out great even without it. I use this on my D3100, and even though I have to manually focus(which I did even with my kit lens) it works perfectly fine, where some people online were saying it doesn't work well with my camera model. Over all, it's amazing for it's price and zoom range.

Excellent performance despite the cheap price.

By nastanir

First of all it does not have VR and won't auto focus on D3100. For that there is AF-S 55-300 VR at almost 3 times the price of this one (online). This is also one of he two cheapest priced lens in the entire Nikon catalog. So I was hesitant if it is worth buying. It is worth if you are looking for a decent telephoto zoom, won't mind manual focusing, and usually taking pictures during the day. Picture quality is sharp (better than I expected), way better than your 10x point & shoot or SLR loo...

Nikon lens technology for consistently brilliant performance

Nikon 70-300mm Features

  • A super-telephoto zoom lens covering the 70-300mm range of focal lengths (anglesof view equivalent to 189-810mm in 35mm [135] format). This allows users to fillthe frame with faraway action or give images a busy, compressed look. It also enables shallow depth-of-field that makes subjects stand out from backgrounds.
  • Adoption of a retractable barrel mechanism makes the lens the world's smallest and lightest*1 in its class. This makes the lens highly portable and easy to handle despite being a super-telephoto zoom lens.
  • The lens is equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) mechanism that effectively reduces the effects of camera shake equivalent to a 4.0-stop increase in shutterspeed at the maximum telephoto position and 4.5 stops*2 at the maximum wide-angle position.
  • It is the first 1 NIKKOR lens equipped with a focus limit switch, which enables high-speed AF and decreases the amount of time required to focus on distant subjects by restricting focus distance to greater distances.
  • It is the first 1 NIKKOR lens for which Super ED glass, which markedly reduces axial chromatic aberration, has been adopted.
  • Nano Crystal Coat, which effectively reduces ghost and flare, has also been adopted.
  • It is equipped with M/A (autofocus with manual override) mode, which enables manual focusing by rotating the focus ring for intuitive fine adjustment of focus while autofocus is operating. This enables smooth recording of movies.
  • Utilization of Nikon's exclusive linear voice coil motor (VCM) for autofocus drive enables very fast and precise autofocusing and smoother acquisition of theintended subject with phase-detection AF built into Nikon 1 cameras.
  • Shooting similar to that of basic telephoto macro photography is made possible with a maximum reproduction ratio of approximately 0.41x (equivalent in 35mm format).
  • Just as with all 1 NIKKOR lenses, the 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 is designedto be quiet. When used with the quiet electronic shutter built into Nikon 1 cameras, operation is nearly silent.
