AN-SBR2 BlackRapid Quick Draw Strap Review

I am satisfied with the strap. I agree it takes a lot of strain off of your neck, but you will feel the weight on your shoulder if you wear it for extended periods of time. I read some of the reviews talking about the quality of the hardware being questionable and I don't see it. They have added a nylon security strap that now attaches from one of the original neck strap loops on the camera body to the carbineer on the strap. This way, you still have the screw in eye that installs in the tripod mount on the base of the camera to attach to the strap plus a secondary short nylon strap from the neck strap loop on the camera body. It is a backup should the screw in eye fail. I will say the screw in eye is about as small height-wise as they can make it yet it is very wide and it does make connecting the spring loaded carbineer challenging. It takes 2 hands and some finagling with it to get it hooked up. The security strap is markedly easier due to the thinner eyelet on the nylon strap. The spring loaded carbineer also has a threaded sleeve that screws down over the opening of the carbineer for an additional level of security by ensuring the clip will not open if hit and giving the benefit of securing the bottom part of the carbineer to the movable latch as if it were all one continuous loop without any opening. One thing the Nikon branded strap does not have the non Nikon branded BR straps do have is the connector cover "Lockstar". This appears to be a pivoting piece of plastic that limits the movement of the eyelet on the carbineer. That is not a deal breaker for me. What it does have leaves no question in my mind about the security of the carbineer. It is solid. The underarm strap doesn't do very much. I find when I am moving my left arm up and down the shoulder pad does tend to fall off my shoulder when I have the camera in my hand. It stays in place as long as the weight of the camera is on it but when shooting it could end up around your waist. I had previously been carrying a D7100 with either a 70-200 f2,8 or 24-70 f2.8 and the battery pack handle installed (and sometimes a SB700 Flash with Gary Fong Lightsphere) on the camera with no security issues. They do have sliding lockable clips on the main strap that I use to either keep the camera in front of me or behind me while traversing. Once I get to where I am shooting, I will release the front clip and lock it in position all the way at the top of the strap so I can swing the camera up and get the shot. Typically the rear clip is locked in position so the camera remains to the front for easy access. This weekend I connected my new D5 to it for the first time, with a SB700 speedlight and Gary Fong Lightsphere and the mainstrap adjuster would not hold the weight. While walking I felt the main strap drop about 3 times until it was fully extended which made the camera ride very low, almost mid thigh, and I am 6' tall. I could deal with it but definitely preferred having it ride above my hip like my D7100 did. I do like having the Nikon Logo on it and the yellow section on the back half of the shoulder strap that makes for quick, easy ID of the front from the back of the strap. The similar strap offered direct from BR does not come with those features. However, I have noticed all of the similar BR straps are now "Breathe" models which have ventilation holes on the top of the shoulder strap. This shoulder strap is not noticeably hot so, again, that is not a deal breaker.

Black Rapid Quick Draw Strap - Recommendation

I have several of the Black Rapid straps, for both sides. I'm an avid hobbyist, and I shoot nature photography, often handheld with lenses up to 600mm. It's not really feasible to use a regular neck strap, that's a LOT of weight on your neck. Additionally, that's just too much stress to put on the point where your lens and camera attach. It can actually pull the contact points away and damage your gear. Using one of these Black Rapid straps, attached to the tripod mount of your lens is really one of the safest, easiest way to go, IMO. When using a telephoto, I carry my camera/telephoto on my left side, which allows me to quickly bring it up and support it with my left hand holding the telephoto by the tripod mount. When walking, my left hand rests on, and controls the swing of my camera. If I want to quickly change to a smaller lens, I can temporarily leave the telephoto on the strap and just hand hold the camera (I know, without a strap, I'm living on the edge!) When I'm shooting a smaller lens, say just sightseeing with a 35mm, I keep an opposite side strap attached to the camera tripod mount, held on my right side. That way I can quickly bring it up and my finger is already on the shutter button. Takes a bit of practice, but it's become second nature to me. There are a couple of downsides to the strap: One is the fact the tripod attachment is taken, so there's no quick release plate attached to your camera. This rig is for quickly shooting while hand holding your camera, not for using a tripod. The other downside is that you need to make sure the attachment ring is always secure. I've picked up the habit of testing it every time I pick up the camera. As a backup, I also use a tether (just in case). You can buy them online, or make one. It's a small snap ring attached to the lug on the Rapid Strap tripod lug, and a cord that is attached to one the (unused) neck strap attachments on the camera. This way, if the Rapid strap comes unscrewed, there is still a cord attaching the lug to the camera itself, that will (hopefully) keep everything from hitting the ground. I've never had to rely on it, but it's nice to know there is a backup, just in case.... I don't necessarily use this all the time, but it travels with me wherever I go. I find this to be a great tool to have in your toolbox, and I wouldn't want to be without it.

Takes a load off of your neck and keeps the camera secure

I am very pleased with my BlackRapid AN-SBR2 Quick Draw Strap. Unlike the strap that came with my D810 this one spreads the weight evenly over my shoulder and has an additional strap under the arm to help keep it in place on my shoulder. I frequently carry a D810 with the Nikon 28-300 zoom with comfort. Accessories such as a "Lockstar" and tether can be obtained from BlackRapid for additional security

No control- Camera bounces back and forth!

I bought this a few months ago, and never really felt safe with it. I wore it in a Park that wasn't crowded, but I found that the Camera bounced back and forth as I walked. It actually hit into people, and objects, and it marked up the body and Grip quite a bit. I ended up holding the camera, as I see other users of this type of product doing, and if you have to hold it anyhow, you don't really need this strap. Stay with the Strap that comes with the camera, or get a Holster Type of strap so your camera can actually lock on to it. That way you'll know it will be secure!

Check the hard wear

I have had the BlackRapid for several years now I carry my camera with me 90 % of the time, the other day the pivot point let go and my camera fell three feet, the lens zoom was effected and an eee message showed up for the first few shoots. My Nikon Df seems to be working ok now other then the zoom is a little stiff when zooming. So if you have had your Black Rapid for a few years check the pivot point!!!! NOT sure if I'll replace it
