This battery does not work at all in my D850. It does work just fine in my D800 though. I don't know why this is the case. Maybe the D850 is programmed to detect non-original batteries somehow.

The Nikon BL-5 allows me to use the batteries I use with my D4 bodies in the battery grips for my D800e (MB-D12) and D850 (MB-D18) bodies. This makes traveling easier since one battery type (and charger) can work for all, and it increases the frames per second if you are machine-gunning. Unfortunately, Nikon doesn’t see fit to include the BL-5 with the MB-D18 (I don’t remember if it comes with the MB-D12), so it has to be an additional purchase. Otherwise, it’s great.

This battery cover allows you to use the Nikon D5/D4/D4s batteries with the vertical grips for the D500 and D850. This way you only have to carry one type of battery and charger with you. Plus these batteries have much more storage and last longer per charge.

I love this battery pack! Being able to go from 7fps to 9fps with my D850 is huge! The battery lasts forever, attaches easily, and adds significant functionality! My only gripe would have to be with the price.

This is super nifty. It allows my D500 battery grip to use the bigger batteries that the D5s run off. The batteries are not cheap, but they last for an entire day of shooting. I've actually never run one out of charge even shooting 5,000 shots. I'd usually go through 2 or even 3 of the regular size batteries.

Bought the Nikon D850 and saw that with the MB-D12 Battery Pack I could use the batteries for my D5 but didn't read the fine print. You need to buy the BL-5 in order to use the D5 battery. Why they did not include it with the MB-D12 beats me for it was only a $ item.

As long as it fits properly, there's not much else to say other than that it should be included along with the grip. If Nikon wants to charge a little more for the grip, that's fine, but why should anyone have to order the chamber cover separately and have to wait for it to come before being able to use the larger battery. With the current D-850 craze, there is an extended waiting list for the camera body, the grip, and now the chamber cover. If the chamber cover came with the grip, the grip would be a complete package and one would be set to go as soon as they receive the grip. The grip without the chamber cover can't make use of the bigger battery, which provides longer shooting time and increases the fps from 7 to 9. I can't speak for anyone else, but it's my estimation, from the difficulty in finding the chamber cover in-stock anywhere, that most people who order the grip intend to use the larger battery and, so, need the chamber cover. Oh well, one more misstep by a quality manufacturer.

With the BL-5,both my camera bodies now take the 18 battery. This allows me to take only one charger and one battery type when traveling. The BL-5 is compatible with the D500.

If you have a D4 or D5 this is a great accessory for running the bigger battery EL-EN 18 in the grip for d800-d500. Becomes cost prohibited if you don't already have batteries and charger.
