Fabulous camera!

I bought one a P5000 back in July 2007 in order to take photos of my trip to NYC. I neglected to do my homework and didn't buy a memory card (file that under DUH). However I did get 14 stupendous shots taken on a boat ride on the Hudson River. I was floored by the excellent quality of the photos. Fortunately for me I also carried My FE also. A wonderful camera. I am eternally gratefuol to Nikon for their expertise' and ability to outdo all the other camera manufacturers. Oops I nearly forgot. This camera takes video also. Up to one hour.

Great little camera

I've been using Nikons for over thirty years, and this was my first digital. I also purchased the sb-400 flash and both wide and tele adaptors. This camera makes superb images for a point and shoot. It has a viewfinder which allows me to hold the camera up to my eye for more steady shots. The flash shoe lets me use my sb-400 either off the camera with an extension cord or on the camera with a bounce for more natural lighting. Red-eye and harsh shadows will be eliminated giving images a more natural and professional look. The telephoto and wide angle adaptors add versatility to the camera although you cannot use the viewfinder when using them. They just get in the way of the finder. The presets work well and you are given the ability to shoot shutter priority, aperture priority or manual for more creative control of your images. Menu settings will allow you to bracket exposures and apply D-lighting for even more creative control. This camera has a ton of pro-like features that you would not normally find in a point and shoot. Although the P5000 is geared to the more serious shooter, it can just as easily be switched to Program Mode and Auto White Balance and still make great images. On the negative side, shutter lag can be annoying, as is with most point and shoots. Also, a camera this sophisticated should have been made with a RAW file option.

still on my mind

This camera changed everything for me. Suddenly, the most beautiful, full depth, highly defined PICS were created by me. Ten years ago, my friends and I chipped in to purchase a coolpix for a birthday gift.I spent the night of the party reading the manual - fell in love with Nikon, and four cameras later,my love continues to grow. Of all my cameras, this is the one. The results are amazing. The quality of construction, no fuss design, and options to become one with this camera, makes for a love affair. buy it. BUY IT..

Best Point-and-shoot EVER

My husband brought an older model of this camera to our relationship and I became quite adept at using (and loving) it. After dropping & breaking the camera, we bought the P5000 and I wouldn't use any other. The ergonomic hand grip is comfortable, the low-light capability is outstanding, the "mega-bonus-zoom" gets super-close to far away objects and the advanced functions are awesome. (I managed to capture the northern lights in Alaska AND get a pretty clear image of the Big Dipper with a long exposure.) Even if you don't plan on using the advanced features, this is the best point-and-shoot for pretty much every consumer. Oh, and get a gorillapod tripod to use with it - it's the best.

Alot of bang for the buck!!!

Great camera. Excellent feel and build qualities. The camera is only limited by it's user. Can't go wrong for the money.

I would recommend this to my friends.

I purchased this camera to take to Disney World. I own a Nikon D70 and love it, but I did not want to carry all my heavy equipment around for six days. I was very pleased with the ease of use, compact size, and I have great quality pictures! I have received many compliments about the quality of the pictures. This is great because I am a serious scrapbooker and I would highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a good quality camera.

Nikon Coolpix P5000

Although I am primarily a film person, I decided to add a small digital camrera to carry around and for family gatherings, etc. when I didn't want to lug my SLR/Medium Format gear with me. After months of dithering, reading reviews, and speaking with friends, I decided on the P5000. My choices were limited as I absolutely had to have an opital viewfinder. I chose this camera because it comined a decent price with a number of features that I liked. I 've only used it a few times, but with very good results. The digital interface is easy to use and I find it easier to go through the menus than I thought it would be. While slightly larger and heavier than some of the other models I looked at (Canon 710 IS), it fits easily into my coat or pants pocket or briefcase. Unless you are a very big person, it's probably not a good shirt pocket camera. The quality of the pictures so far is good and I'm still learning how to adapt the settings to my prefered way of shooting. Please bear in mind that I've shot film for over thirty years and this is a big change for me. So I've been pleasantly surprised how easy the shift has been.I have only two quibbles: (1) as with all small P&S digital cameras, the optical viewfinder is adequate at best. Still it is a viewfinder and I had to have that due to my inability to hold a camera steady. And second, after SLRs and medium format for so many years, I'm having trouble holding something so small. The VR helps a lot and it is always on for me.All in all, I'd recommend this camera.[...]

A very nice, little P&S camera

Just what I wanted. I shoot Nikon already so it was easy to adjust to.

"Creative Bang for the Buck"

The P5000 is very compact and easy to use. All of the buttons and comands are very easy to learn. If you have exp with a SLR you will not have any problem with this camera. Best of all it takes great pictures and you can take it any place. I use it with an Epson 4 x 6 Picture Mate 240 and the pictures look Pro. Grab one and have fun.

Great camera

Its a great little camera that has many functions of a SLR, focus is slow, lag time is not to slow once its focused. It has the advantage of Nikon advanced lighting, and is compatible with nikons iTTL flash guns (sb-400-600-800). Its great for travel or when carrying a DSLR is not an option. The panoramic feature is fun, its got its own B&W mode, and a lot of other advanced functions.

The benefits of VR image stabilization also extend to achieve smoother action in the movie shooting modes. Extended light sensitivity ranges up to ISO 3200 and allows a user to shoot even under extreme low light conditions. The Coolpix P5000 features advanced functions which are skillfully packed into a lightweight yet solid body that features a magnesium alloy front panel, an optical viewfinder, a textured finish that is reminiscent of the feel of leather, and a comfortable new grip covered in grid-pattern rubber for a reassuring hold.
