Questions & Answers

Ian G : I bought a p510 because it had a GPS & shoots 7 fps. first could someone tell me what to set to get it to shoot burst 7 fps also the GPS doesn't seem to work at all ?. Thanks Ian G.DALE N : Ian, I have this camera so hope I can help. To turn on the GPS: Camera on, push Menu button, left with thumb wheel on back, Down 2 where the satellite icon is, push OK, right with wheel, then select “ON” for "Record GPS data". For “continuous modes”: Put top selector to P, S, A, M, or U. Push the “Fn” button on top of camera, and then select one of the 7 options in the screen with the back wheel. I think continuous will only work in these modes. Hope this helped, Captain DaleOLEG K : Hello, Go to Google and type 'nikon coolpix p510 manual'. You will get the link to pdf file. Download the manual. I'd recommend to print it out as you will need a lot of references in the beginning. To work, camera's GPS needs strong enough satellite signal and if GPS doesn't work it means the signal is weak. In some locations, the signal is unsteady during a day. GPS will work under strong signal, be sure.PATRICIA G : I'm not sure about the 7fps but my GPS rarely works. I was actually disappointed with the GPS feature. Sometimes it does come through but it won't tell you the city and state but will tell you the coordinates.DOUGLAS Q : I don't think that camera can do 7fps or has a gps either.
Shopper : good camera for artist?PAUL M : Depends on what you intend to do with it. It has an "Effects" setting that will give you Soft Focus, Sepia, Hi Contrast B & W, High Key, Low Key, Selective Color and Painting. Also, the White Balance control has several settings that one can use to alter the color of the scene.MARBLE, A : It truly depends on what your purpse is.....GARY K : I am a nature photographer and find this camera meets almost all of my needs in capturing great color and detail. For the price the 42X zoom lens is just perfect for wildlife shots. I am able to capture eagles on the nest from 30 to 40 yards with decent clarity and detail. The camera seems to be very durable and unencumbering (light and no assortment of lenses to carry). I take it in a kayak, hiking, boating etc. Very pleased with the camera and its.versatility.RILEY J : It depends upon how you use it. If you are looking for detail, then yes. If you want to capture moving objects, yes. All I can off is I love mine and use only one hand to operate. Good luck.
chi c : how do you know is the battery is low?RYAN W : there is a battery indicator light in lcd screenDUANE M : "2. Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. Battery Level Number of Exposures Remaining The number of exposures remaining is displayed." This display is on the upper right corner of the data window. See page 24 in the Coolpix Manual.TED T : Sorry but I never let mine low enough to know for sure . When the indicator shows only 1/4 charge left, I swap out the battery to make sure I don't run out of power at a crucial moment.ROBERT B : When you turn the camera on there is a battery strength indicator.

Great for short day trips, traveling light

I have owned this camera for several years and find it to take as good or better photos than any other camera I have used.

Versatile to use, somewhat shoddy workmanship

I bought this camera in March of 2013 and use it to take approximately 20 pictures a month. I wanted a point and shoot that was versatile and easy to use. The big selling point for me was the GPS feature. I love capturing wildlife and documenting them with coordinates. The camera proved to be easy to use and offers a lot of shooting options however it failed for me on the GPS as it was inconsistent. After a few months of having the camera the grips started to bubble and pull away from the camera body. It's taken a couple years, but two pieces have pulled away and fallen off completely. Since it is a lightly used camera, I am positive it was a flaw in the glue. Overall I like using the camera for birding (as long as they stay relatively still) and taking pictures of my pets (fairly nice pet feature)!

Still a great camera

After several years and many, many pictures, tis is still one of the best camera's I have ever owned. It simple when you want simple and can be as complex as you need it. I have just purchased it newer sibling the L840 as a Christmas gift for someone who wants a better, easy to use, zoom-able point and shoot.

Been a year and still love it!!!

I actually grab it over my DSLR. The pictures are as crisp and it's less bulky to carry around!!! If you're looking for a great camera. No need to look further!

Happy with my purchase!

Love this camera. It fits all my demands without too much complexity. Light weight makes it easy to carry around. Extra battery is a must while out all day taking pictures.

This Bald Eagle Photo Speaks For Itself!

I bought my Coolpix 510 six months ago, and have appreciated it from day 1 - but today I really came to understand the magic of this camera! I was shoveling snow in front of my house when I heard a dramatic bird call. I looked up and saw a large bird 200 feet away. With my naked eye I wasn't sure what bird species it was - but I ran into the house, grabbed my camera, and just used the auto mode and zoom lever adjustment to take this shot! (And BTW it looks even better at the full size that exceeds your upload limit.)

Excellent product!!!

Okay, I'll start with this: I am like, a total Nikon geek. I wouldn't have it any other way! I've got the mug that looks like a Nikkor camera lens, even. And you know what? It all started with this camera. I used a Canon Powershot before, and thought it was nice... until I purchased my first Nikon. I love the experience, the feel in my hand, the comfortable weight, and the LONG zoom. The Coolpix P510 has a stupendous image quality, and takes incredibly sharp images. Mainly, I like to photograph wildlife and nature, which often requires a strong lens, which this camera has. The image quality is excellent even at full zoom, and the auto-focus is very fast and exceedingly accurate. (Especially when compared to that ol' Powershot.) It has really great VR, too.

Awesome camera for street photography

Great all around point and shoot camera, I love it. The Coolpix P510 with its long reach, is perfect for all basic photography. It's not good for sports like the excellent Nikon DSLR are but it is great for everything else. I think that it takes better movies then a DSLR, it's just a really good all around camera.

Sensational Compact Camera

We own more than a half dozen digital cameras from point-n-shoot to professional SLR’s. Not only is this my favorite among our collection of Nikon cameras, it’s my overall favorite. First of all, for a compact camera it packs a wallop. The 42x zoom is simply amazing, and with the outstanding picture quality, it’s the perfect camera for the outdoorsmen on the go. The full HD video, though not in the same class as my dedicated video cameras, the quality is simply amazing for its size and cost. I’ve only had the camera for month, so I haven’t gotten around to using all of its features. But among the many that I have tried, the camera has performed flawlessly. I’ll continue to use my Professional SLR cameras to impress my clients, but the P510 is my new go-to camera.

First rate bridge camera!

I've owned this P510 for several months now, and have taken, literally, thousands of images with it. The results are always consistently first rate, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I have DSLR's and professional equipment as well, but don't always want to carry a load of lenses and the like when traveling and shooting personal photos. This is the perfect camera for those times, and I highly recommend it. Image quality is outstanding.

Merci!

GREAT CAMERA!

This is a wonderful camera for the "almost serious" photographer. The 42x zoom is amazing. You get high quality photos & excellent detail without the very heavy camera & bulky large lenses.

Fantastic "point & shoot" camera!

I love this camera! The 42x zoom is amazing. It catches things you don't even see with the naked eye. The detail is fantastic. After a photo of, say, a flower is taken, zoom on it and find tiny droplets of dew, or a tiny bug you didn't see when you took the photo. You can count the feathers on the birds you photograph. If you don't want to be hauling around all the lenses and other apparatus that go with "professional" quality camera, but still want quality photos, this is the camera for you. --And the price is right, too.

Outstanding Value

For the price this is the best camera I have ever had. The picture and video quality exceeded my expectations when I made my purchase, and I expected high quality from Nikon since I have used there products for more than 40 years. I only recently let go of my original Nikon 1 that I purchased in Singapore in the early 70's. This camera is very easy to use so you can hand it to any family member to take a photo and know that it will come out well. Obviously it is not in the high end group of Nikons but it's performance rivals the best. Well worth the money.

One of the Best Cameras I've ever used

In spite of being a little skeptical while buying, this camera impressed me very much. I've been a staunch user of Sony and Canon cameras till I decided to try a Nikon. I could have bought a DSLR straight away but I thought of giving this new Hybrid Cameras a chance. I'd say, it would give any DSLR a run for money. A full packed house of extraordinary features combined with its light weight, the Nikon P510 is indeed a great camera for beginners. One thing that I'd like to say about this camera is its extreme night photography capability. I remember taking a shot in the night with all the lights shut down and the picture that came out was beyond words. It was as if all the lights were on inside the room. This camera is awesome for taking pictures of flames, firecrackers, moon, etc. I remember taking a picture of a crescent moon from the top of a mountain and it the outcome of the picture was better than any telescopic lens could have offered. I could see every single crater so clearly. Overall, the camera is one of the best things i've ever purchased! Thank you Nikon.

Versatile, Easy to Use, Great for Travel

So far this is the best Nikon Camera that I have owned, I started years ago with a coolpix 5700, grandfather to the P510, an early DSL, D50, a P100, all have been good, however, so far this is the best and most versatile, great telephoto lens with out having to carry extra lens, VR lens holds steady even on long telephoto shots, good sensor, good in low light, the flash is improved over the P100, Great, versatile, fun, easy to use camera for a budget price

God and bad mixed together

The Good: Nice compact camea. Light weight, easy to carry around. Keep it in my car and use it a lot. Good picture quality. Especialy like the view screen and the White Balance features. In love with the 1000mm telephoto. The Bad: The close up capabilities are not very close up. Hunts for focus A LOT at long telephoto settings. I bought this camera for birding and it's a real struggle to get the camera to focus before the sun goes down. Am currently having qaulity problems with it and am sending it in for warrenty service. Dissapointing.

What I have been looking for!!!!

I had a little pentax optima that I just loved for taking macro shots..... I LOVE taking pics of the smallest things but wanted the detail... my optima did that for me and when it was broke I was ballistic. I tried and tried to find another camera like it that would take those wonderful macro pics... I wanted another pentax... however the website didn't have much to offer so I went to the nikon a brand I was also familiar with but not real into... that is until I gave this camera a whirl and OH MY GOD!!!!!! The camera had all the features I wanted but was so happy to find it went WAAAAAYYYY beyond my expectations. I was able to get all the shots I wanted both very close up to far away with so much clairity it was amazing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this camera and if it ever breaks I am going to die. This is the best camera I have ever had and am thinking about buying a second one and keep it set aside just incase the one I am using breaks. This camera is FABULOUS!!!!!!! Everyone should have one and see what you have been missing. There is only one thing I would change and that is the battery charger. The battery has to be charged in the camera unless they just forgot to put and external charger in my box. I am getting another charger and battery because once I got started taking pics I couldn't stop... THIS CAMERA IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

best camera meets all my needs

I was disappointed at a few cameras I had before. I never was able to capture a picture when my kids were moving. After months of research and comparison, I bought this camera and very happy with the quality of the pictures taken from this camera. Yesteday was my daughter's high school graduation day. I was able to catch the precious moment of shaking hands from far far away. I showed the pictures to the other family members and they wanted to buy this camera too.

Excactly what i wanted to have!

It's great camera, generally small, amazing zoom and the battery lasts for long, if you don't use zoom all the time. Nice selection for a traveller who doesn't need to carry a big thing as his camera.

Great camera for the $

As you read the quick start guide practice to learn the various features. When shooting If you sort of press your eye into the viewfinder you will find that the image will become clearer. Monitor is a bit small, prefer to use viewfinder for shooting and review. Nice overall feel in hands

Perfect Camera for the Serious Non-Professional

The P510 is the perfect camera for me in every way. If I was a professional photographer, I would definitely go for one of the DSLR's, but I find that I don't need to go that route. I can do everything I want to do with this camera including some serious high quality shooting without lugging around a heavy bag of accessories and lenses. The picture quality is just off-the-charts good and includes the ability to work with raw files. With an equivalent of 24mm to 1000mm zoom, I'm ecstatically happy with what this camera can do. I find that shooting with the extreme telephoto, a sturdy tripod is definitely necessary, but I expected that to be the case. The adjustable angle viewing screen is a huge plus with close-up work. Most of the point-and-shoot type cameras just didn't have enough quality and features, but this camera solves that problem for me at a great price point.

Great for the price.

Overall very happy with the camera. I have found that on most of the point and shoot digital cameras that they are to small. Your hands have a tendency to cramp up. No problems like that for this camera. Image quality is very good. The camera has some very nice features I will be using more often in the future. Have not had the chance to try out fully yet. This is a great camera to have on day trips, when you do not need to lug a whole bunch of other equipment. It works a little sluggish in the cold weather. It seemed like the battery went quickly in the cold weather. I was not sure if it was the battery or I did not charge it long enough. I am very happy to date with the camera. If you can not afford the big ticketed DSLR, then this is a good way to go.

Nice camera

Only had it for 2 months and really haven't had time to learn much beyond point and shoot. Sunday night it refused to charge either from the wall outlet or the computer so I brought it back to SAM's Club where I bought it for about $. They exchanged it for a new one w/o a problem and even gave me a refund of $ as they are now selling it for $. I could not be happier. Now to get back to learning.

I enjoy this camera and am glad I purchased this and not a larger DSLR

I enjoy this camera and am glad I purchased this and not a larger DSLR. My past cameras include an older digital Olympus full function point and shoot with RAW capability (about $ prior to the DSLR days), some D-point and shoots, Nikon 35mm 8008s SLR w/data back , and manual 35mm's with fixed lenses. This camera offers a great zoom range, beginning with the 24mm wide angle, without switching lenses, decent macro, and the camera can be switched to fully manual operation with manual focus. That's pretty pretty good for a point and shoot camera. Great photos and the video function is also good; but for HD1080 I had to upgrade to a Class 10 card to eliminate slight pause affects of the slower class 6 card. The auto focus could be a bit better in video mode. Good camera if you want the HD video basics, easy point and shoot option, and some options to overide the auto mode. This camera has the GPS function, but I haven't used it yet. Also offers the option of using Eye-Fi card and 3-D shooting in photo, and have not tried either of those either. Ask yourself if you will use all the higher functions the DSLR's offer, or if you prefer a smaller, lighter, and cheaper camera. Another plus: I won't feel so bad if I damage the camera, or it is stolen as I can buy several of these for the price of a DSLR. Keep in mind that this camera, and all D-cameras, will be obsolete in a few years. Don't spend to much $$$ on technology unless you have to.

Great starter Camera

I really love this camera. The pictures are amazing, getting so many compliments on them. The video quality is also really great. I'm always taking pictures and know my way around a camera. I got this, because I thought I would be a great camera for traveling. The only thing that I don't get is the purpose of the flip screen. You can't see yourself if your doing a self video as I often do. Once it's in the tripod, I have to place a mirror under it to see if I'm even in the shot. I was also told that you can use a remote with it and I later found out that you can't.
