Correction to my previous post: The second version of the camera had all the same short-life battery problems (battery lasted 25-35 shots tops within a half-hour, even with no GPS, flash, or LCD screen use). First call to Nikon, and the tech rep I spoke to seemed in denial of the problem and offered no help. I called Nikon again a day later, and the tech rep confirmed the battery problem as a software design issue (??)and said a Firware 1.1 upgrade would be out soon. A week later I saw the Firmware 1.1 uprade available at dpreview.com. Made the upgrade, and I've had very good battery function ever since.

I take a lot of pictures every day and use the GPS feature all the time. I took 300 shots yesterday all with GPS tags and the battery was still fine this morning. If you have the GPS feature on it will check for a signal every so often and if you leave the camera sitting for a few days it will eventually die. If you are planning on not using the camera for a few days simply go to the GPS menu and turn it off or you will be complaining about the battery like everyone else. I leave it plugged in when I am not using the camera to circumvent any battery problems. I normally shoot with a DSLR with the GP-1 but this is a great back-up. Once you have a connection it will find you very quickly even if you move several miles between shots (I think it's faster than my GP-1 unit). My only gripe is that the camera does not have a battery meter so buy an extra battery or two just in case (Adorama sells them cheap). This is my first P&S by Nikon and I am very pleased with its features and design.

This little 6000 is a wonderful tool to use if you prefer some of the advanced feature sets of digital SLRs. I am normally a Canon and Panasonic user, but I prefer the 6000 as a small compact due to its more manual-style feature set and its feel in the hand. However, my particular model seems to have much worse battery problems than what most users have reported. I tried and failed three times to get any more than 30 shots from the camera (all with no flash and no use of the viewscreen). That's a mere 10 percent of the battery life that Nikon claims. The battery problem is completely unacceptable and alone makes the camera almost unuseable. I've returned mine in hopes that a replacement works much better.
