We did a cruise tour to Alaska and I wanted a bit more camera than my pocket Nikon but without the bulk and weight of aux lenses ect plus a viewfinder and this P7000 really filled the bill and I admit I still do not know all the things it can do. I really appreciated the stabilization capabilities while riding buses and trains.

A nice camera. I was looking for the best in point and shoot for a reasonable price. I picked the Nikon over the Canon G12 due to the fact that the Nikon has longer zoom or focal range. The Canon has a bit faster menu system and might be a bit better in video - however the Nikon can zoom in video mode which is super - It is really nice to have access to key controls like exposure right at your finger tips instead of having to navigate thru menus. You can get impressive shallow depth of field for such a small camera which most all point and shoot could not - So if you are looking a pretty compact camera where you can put it in your jacket pocket and still have a lot of controls this is a great choice. The new 3/4 cameras have small bodies and are of course better when fitted with their lenses - however once fitted with a zoom lens then you no longer fit the camera in your jacket or somewhat hide in hour hand - There are many new point and shoot that offer more mega pixels and much greater zoom - but they do not offer as much control and handy access to controls or as good of a build. Picture quality is very good - So in this class if you are looking for something that gives super zoom and super compact then there are other options - but if easy access to controls and quality of images and creative controls then this is the best choice - Canon is great in their point and shoots and the G12 is really good but with a zoom only to 5.o verses the 7.1 of the Nikon I would go with the Nikon -
