Shopper : What is a decoded en el14 battery is a coded battery better?MARK L : The term "coded" may pertain to whether a battery can be charged when not fully discharged. Here's a line from an ad: "100%Full Coded. Chargeable even if it has not been used up yet." But I never encountered the term "coded" before, in this sense, so I'm not positive. -MarkDelbert H : I'm sorry, I can't answer your question. I have two batteries, but they are both coded.JOHN P : Not sure about the difference between decoded and coded batteries but the battery life of the P7100 has not let me down.JEFF W : The question isn't whether one is better than the other as much as it is will the decoded battery work in the P7100. Much like newer digital printers are configured to recognize when a non-original cartridge is used, Nikon has (supposedly) built in code that verifies the EnEl14 battery. Coded batteries are guaranteed to work while a decoded battery may not.WILLIAM W : No idea on that question. Bill
Shopper : Hej there! I have some issue with my expending ev+/- it as stop to working at M function, Is there some one who knows WHY??? Thanks Hercul.TOM N : In Manual mode your setting a fixed shutter speed, and aperture. In program mode, exposure compensation works by switching both the shutter speed, and aperture to over or under expose. I believe you are able to use exposure compensation with in Manual mode if Auto ISO is turned on. This way it will keep the aperture and shutter speed constant, but adjust the ISO to change the exposure. Of course, you can just use the rear dial to adjust the shutter speed, rather than use exposure compensation for a similar result.HARVEY M : Sorry, but I sold mine some time ago. I never experienced the issue described.DAVID C : Yes, the over/under exposure dial quits working in Manual Mode because you already have that control with the speed and aperture dials; and the over/under exposure bar under the aperture/speed readout windows of the display shows you how many ev you are over or under.THOMAS K : I don't use the "M" function much, but as you know that is the "Manual" mode of the camera, where YOU, the operator are choosing the exposure for the camera. It's up to YOU, therefore, to under or over expose as you wish, the camera can't do it for you, as you are taking all camera control away from the camera when you put it in M mode. If you want the camera to under or overexpose automatically, you need to use some other mode than "M". It should work fine in the A,P,or S modes. Hope that helps!ERNEST P : In M function, you have to adjust your exposure up or down manually, by changing aperture or shutter settings.CARL G : +/-EV purpose is to bias the exposure calculations by the onboard processor. In manual mode there is no exposure "processing" you are fully in control of all exposure contributors (shutter speed and aperture). Consequently EV serves no purpose. Simply adjust your speed or aperture to tweak your exposure as desired.
Shopper : How does this compare to a P6000?THOMAS K : Hi Sorry for the delay in getting back, but this site would not let me get thru to answer for a couple of days, so hopefully this isn't too late to help. I've not used the P6000, but in reading a bit about it online, I gather it's an older version of the P7100. Display is smaller and does not swing out like the 7100. I like that because I often take unusual views of scenery close to the ground or macros of flowers and such. Having the LCD panel swing out for this saves me from having to get down on the ground to take many pics. I also gather low light performance has been improved compared to the 6000 and it has a better lens with more of a wide angle to tele ratio. Overall, it sounds like the 7100 is faster, a better performer (especially in low light) and has useful features (like the swing out display) that the 6000 doesn't have. I have enjoyed using it for almost a year now. However, you might want to order the brand new P7700 instead. It has even more megapixels, has a faster lens with a bit more zoom and a better grip on it for handling (which I wish mine had). It's about the same price too! No optical finder though, although I rarely use mine. As good as the 7100 is, I think I would get the 7700 if I were you! Good luck-- I hope this helps! --TomMARK H : I don't know anything about the P6000. But the reason I bought this point and shoot was that it handles RAW format. That is very important to me. Most other point and shoots are not RAW format capable.MARGARET R : For the average person I think the P6000 would be a fine camera. It's main flaw is its relatively low zoom range, from 28mm to 112mm. Personally I think the P7100 is better, however. It has larger pixels, giving it less noise in low light, it has a longer zoom range with only a 0.1 f-stop drop at the wide end, it can record HDR video and has faster continuous shooting. As a professional camera, the P7100 is the camera I carry when I'm on holiday and don't want to carry my kit with me.

Best ergonometrics in a compact

The P7100 was purchased after several epiphanies: when travelling I never have room for my DLSR any more, or even a mirror-less system for that matter; 99% of my images are never printed on paper; and as I now need reading glasses viewfinders are of lesser value. The P7100 has become my main camera replacement, taking the place of both my compact and my DSLR for almost everything. Excellent IQ but the outstanding feature is the ergonometrics; I love features like having separate controls for Aperture and Shutter and having things like Flash Compensation at hand without going to the menu. These controls are main selling feature of the camera for me. The tilt out screen is the main feature I like; I generally shoot from the waist.

The best camera I had so far!

It is not easy to choose a camera. So many brands and models! It took me a lot of time to make final decision. I wanted to say "Good bye" to my old 4-megapixel Olympus C-765UZ. I was using it for nearly 10 years! Great camera, but time takes its toll. I chose Coolpix P7100 as replacement. I was dreaming about decent camera, but did not want to invest into bulky dSLR or ever newer light mirrorless systems. I have read many reviews about P7100, paying extra attention to negative reviews. I noticed that many people who was not satisfied with P7100 claim to be dSLR users. Would you expect them to be fully satisfied with relatively simpler and slower camera? I would not. For me, this camera is a huge step forward from my 10-year-old Olympus. P7100 is much faster. Quality is much better. Screen is much bigger and tilting. Manual controls are much easier to access using plenty of dials. No, I don't touch them by accident like some users reported. I can control my fingers with high precision. I will have a lot of time learning how to use all the features presented in this camera, and I am looking forward to it. This camera might not be perfect for everyone, and I am sure I will find something that I would not like, but hey, is there anything perfect in the world? I don't think so. I am very happy with this camera, and I got it for just $325 dollars including shipping, Onyx bag and 4GB memory card.

This is a great camera. I have a nikon d7000 which is nikons best dx camera. I use this camera when i need a light camera. The camera is great in low light. I use a sb-400 flash with this camera a great combo. I would like to have 1080p but video is good.

It's almost there, Niikon.

Very fine camera. It needs a fully articulated monitor and a longer zoom range and you'd really have something. Can you hear me, Nikon?

Big improvement over P7000

Major improvement over P7000. Seems faster and I appreciate the pull-out LCD to help take photos from different angles. When shooting in manual mode it's a big help to have the front dial for quickly, easily changing Aperture.

Great for everyday photography

I am still in the process of learning how to use this camera. There are so many different features on it. I like that I can set it on automatic and roll with the flow, along with being able to use various settings, including manual, for more specialized shooting. Highly recommended as the camera to have with you for everyday use rather than carrying around a full blown digital SLR and lenses. Not that I plan to give up the SLR anytime soon. My only gripe is that I wish Nikon had included a case with the camera like the nice leather case that came bundled with the Coolpix S8100 I bought at Costco. Are you listening Nikon?

The P7100 Delivers Photo Quality Beyond My Expections

I bought my P7100 hoping that the operation and photo quality would be good enough so I could leave my much larger and heavier Nikon cameras and Len's at home once in a while. I like to go into the city of Portland, OR. and just shoot architecture and other subjects I happen onto without having to haul all my camera gear with me every time. I have used all the functions and it amazes me what it can do. I can't believe how well it does in close-up mode. Even the HDR function surprised me with how well it did. I have printed some 13x19 photos from the P7100 and they turned as well as shots from the D200. Ive' shot professonaly in the past and I know quality. The P7100 is quality shooter !

Very Nice Advance Camera

This Camera offers the opportunity to take pictures playing with the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, Etc., so you can achieve very nice photos in this "Advance Point & Shoot Camera". The Auto Focus System is very accurate and fast, considering that this camera is under the Coolpix Series. The only concern, that I have, is the Sensor Resolution, 10MP is not enough in this days, I am sure that 14 or 16MP must be offered, at least. That is the reason that I give 3 stars to this product. I can recommend this product, but please, keep in mind the Sensor Resolution.

Great features for small camera!

Great little camera! I shoot RAW most of the time and use it as backup to my bigger DSLR...and the pics are almost as good! Can shoot brackets, which I use often. It is small enough to carry around and have it handy whenever needed. The quality of photos is awsome!! And as usual, the user interface and getting around the menus is simple.

EXCELLENT CAMERA FOR A HIGH PRICE

The camera works fine. But the strap is cheap, rough and cuts into the neck. Really annoying. Certainly a better quality strap could have been supplied. That's why I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, the camera does just about everything a mid-advanced Nikon SLR does at less than half the weight and without fiddling with lens and exposure rates, etc.

Many features in a small package

This is a great camera. I have already reviewed it but I bought a second one because the first one got stolen. Image quality is outstanding and very close to that of a DSLR. There are many features. I like that I can shoot raw, set the camera in manual mode if I need to. I have used this camera extensively in all light conditions and I have to say that low light is handled well by this camera provided one knows how to use it. I like that I can change settings quickly from outside buttons. I particularly like the built in ND filter because it allows me to do long exposures, which I like to do. Of course, in order to fully appreciate the value of this small camera, one has to learn it and get a feel for all the features that are offered. It's a really serious compact. The coolpix P7100 has been with me in many difficult environments from dusty to icy places and performed very well every time. It's the camera I take when I travel. I love the 200mm zoom lens. And even though I don't use the long zoom on a regular basis, it has come handy very often. The quality is very good at 200mm too.

Small but with lots of control

I'm pretty pleased with this camera with the exception of the speed to record to the card [and the viewfinder]. And I have a ultra fast SanDisk. It can do bracketed shots for HDR.

Awesome point and shoot camera

This camera is great. It is exactly what I want. I don't want to carry around a big SLR or a bunch of lenses and equipment. I just want something that is small enough to take everywhere, and that will take great pictures. This camera does that. It gives me all the flexibility I need with almost all of the adjustments you get in an SLR.

Not so great. I'm disappointed in not only the camera but in Nikon support.

I bought the P 7100 on May 3, 2012. Used it on vacation for 4 days before the built in flash stopped working. When I returned from vacation I followed the directions to submit the camera for repair and sent it to Nikon using 2-3 day FedEx. The camera was received on 6/14/12 and the only feedback I get from Nikon is that they are waiting for parts and they cannot give me an estimated date of completion.

fantastic camera

My CoolPix 7100 does everything and more than my non -Nikon D SLR does. I love the light weight, compact design, easy to change settings. The zoom saves lugging extra lenses and the view finder is a necessity when the sun is very bright. I especially like the flash switch...so easy to use without going to a menu . The same can be said for changing Quality settings. This is my first Nikon and I am extremely pleased with my new purchase.

Its a Nikon, say no more!

I purchased the Nikon P7100 because of the larger sensor and extensive manual features. I have had the camera now for close to a month and could not be happier with the overall performance. I upgraded from a 12.2 mega pixel point and shoot and I can say the dynamic range of both contrast and colors with this Nikon P7100 camera are outstanding. I have been working with all the features and noticed the controls for these features are very easy to access with all the function buttons on this camera. My passion is macro photography and this P7100 does a very nice job, no complaints. The tilting display makes it very nice to shoot at all angles, a must for macro. The low light capabilities are also a plus, thanks to the larger sensor and wide angle lense. Oh and did I mention the lens? Well it is Nikkor glass, thats what defines a Nikon and this P7100 is truly Nikon all the way. I could go on and on about the features but it is easier to just say if you are looking to upgrade to an advanced point and shoot with extensive manual controls then do not hesitate to purchase a Nikon P7100, you will not be disappointed. .

Great features in a nice compact camera

As a long time Nikon DSLR shooter, I was getting tired of hauling the big dslr & its lenses around all the time, especially on short trips, so I went looking for an advanced compact camera to provide most of what my dslr does without the weight. The other requirement was no lens changes. The P7100 meets those requirements plus brings more options than I had even thought about. Fairly steep learning curve; got David Busch's guide to help. Just one week into the new camera; the pictures are great & it is so much fun to shoot with!

Coolpix P7100 no paper manual

prior to buying I spent a lot of time comparing with Cannon but chose Nikon, for its good reputation on customer support I love this camera and all its vast range of features, it produces a very good quality results, it is a great shame a printed manual is not included. The manual is easily obtained on the internet but if printed off big and cumbersome, and no good for reading on aeroplanes and the likes. Please go back to small compact printed manuals, so we can maximise the benefit of all these superb features

Quality Product

Improved over P7000 - Faster, better white balance and color rendition (better than primary competition). Great battery life. Good feature set. Good build quality. Reliability to be determined. Expected to be good based on previous Nikon experience. Could benefit from UV haze filter and Polarizing filter. Quick disconnect neck strap would improve versatility.

Lots of capability. Lacking a few features I'd like to have!

Camera takes great pictures in almost every mode from full auto to full manual. Lacks a few features I'd have liked.... GPS capability with GP1? Commander mode for flash? A little quicker recovery between shots? All in all though, terrific for what it is... an advanced, compact, "point & shoot" type camera!

Coolpix P7100: Best in class

The Nikon Coolpix P7100 with its superbly sharp 7.1x Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens and 3-inch ultra-high res Vari-Angle monitor is a personal favorite and at the top of my photo gear wish list right now. Had considered the earlier P7000 and decided to wait, but this P7100 is everything that the earlier camera was not. Have compared it with a number of other similar digital cameras on the market today, but this one keeps coming out on top. For me this is the perfect travel and "take everywhere" compact digital camera. Having that Vari-Angle monitor just adds to its excellent list of features, and the zoom range is perfect for what is intended. Don't own it yet, but have used it enough to know that this is one that I want for the long haul.

Extremely pleased!!!

I have used both Sony and Canon products similar to this camera. I have to say that I have enjoyed this camera much more!!! All the bells and whistles are there for anyone wanting to "take it up a notch". You can put it on auto and just use it as a point and shoot. It works very well. But if you're like me, and enjoy having a little more control, you can move into a more manual operation and you call the shots. I've shot over 1,000 pics so far (I've only had it for about a week) and I have to say I'm very pleased. I have experimented with flash units on it and been very pleased with that too. I've used Pocket Wizards with flash off camera and I've used a Ray Flash on for macro shots!!! It handles them all with ease. Image quality is very good. I've increased ISO up to 3200 and found the image still usable (although I've corrected some in software for noise reduction). Out of camera images are still good at 800 to 1600 ISO. It fits extremely well in your hand. The ergonomic design is much better than other cameras I've used. It's perfect for those trips where you don't want to take along a DSLR (or for that person that just wants one camera to do it all, this one fits that bill too). I don't used video that much but have tried it out some and found it does a very good job (video is very clear). Overall I plan on using this camera for years to come. I'm very glad I purchased it (after much online searching and researching).

good fit between a compact and an SLR

Just got this camera. It is what the salesman said it was;.a cross between an SLR and a compact. I like the small size and portability. the controls are easy enough to figure out, but I haven't mastered them all yet. It seems the only way to go back from autofocus to manual, and then back is to shut off the camera. There must be another way. The shutter seems to be quick, and the weight and feel of the camera is very intuitive. I wanted to get the Nikon camera case, but it is not available, either on line or at the Nikon store.I find that strange that they would release the camera months before, and not even have a date when this important accessory in available. I would like to protect my investment. I hate having to go back to my computer to read the manual, since they give the purchaser only a very small quick start written manual, and a cd for the reference manual.

Camera freezes

While I do enjoy the Coolpix P7100, it does have a tendency to lock up and refuse to restart. Techical support told me to remove the battery and reinsert it and then turn it on. Not good. Support then told me to send it out for service. Hello? I haven't even taken a half dozen pictures with it. I all fairness however, after leaving the battery out of the camera over night it did turn back on with an "unknown error"! on the screen. I turned it off and then back on again and it is now working. But I must say that I am just waiting for the next freeze.

What a surprise!

I just received my Nikon P7100 and took it for a test drive. I have been an film photographer for over 40 years and am one of the last to convert to digital. I wanted a camera that would give both full automatic and full manual capabilities in a budget priced package. If this is what you are looking for then the P7100 is for you. The learning curve for the many controls is short as the camera has an excellent, intuitive layout. Nikon put a lot of thought into which controls would be most used by the advanced user. For example, one dial is dedicated to exposure compensation, a very common accessory for many photographers. Physically, this little gem is well balanced and easy to control. It feels comfy in the hand. The wide ISO range allows for shooting in a variety of lighting conditions with little loss in image quality. I was surprised! If you are the type of person who likes to do a lot of post shooting image manipulation then you won't be disappointed. This camera can record in JPEG and RAW format giving you all the latitude you could desire for computer "darkroom" play. I do wish the camera would accept additional telephoto lenses as I feel limited by the 28-200 mm configuration of the lens system. While this lens appears to be excellent, I would love to reach out with a 400 mm lens. Perhaps Nikon will consider this in a future generation. Whether you are a beginner who is looking for a camera to learn all aspects of photography or a dedicated professional looking for that "pocket back up", you won't be disappointed by the Nikon P7100.

Great camera

By saintb

This P7100 replaces the P7000 that I had for a year. And I am glad to see that all the bugs were fixed. It was time! the P7100 is my only camera., it's not a backup so it goes everywhere, and often in the backcountry, so I like the size. I like how easy it is to use. A major improvement comes from the external adjustement dials so one doesn't have to search through time consuming menus. And most importantly I like the fact that the lens cover finally opens completely! Just like its predece...

Simply the best choice!

I own a few other advanced compact digital cameras, but the Nikon CoolPix P7100 is far and away the best I have ever used. Photos are stunningly sharp, colors are accurate, metering is precise and the overall experience is such a pleasure! This camera feels solid and comfortable, and the LCD monitor is excellent. The AF is quick and accurate, and best of all, my "keeper rate" is higher than ever! Do not hesitate; this is a camera you'll love!
