Inséparables

Depuis le temps que j'ai ce boîtier, nous sommes inséparables... Que du bonheur à l'utilisation. Rapidité sur tous les points. Efficace en basse lumière avec les haut ISO.

Early Christmas

I've been eyeing a professional quality camera for years. Shot with a D90, then move on to D800e - loved the colors, but just felt my images were missing something, found a good used D4 and been singing it's praises from day 1!!!

D4 refurbished cameras not up to what Nikon products once were

The D4 is a great camera. The buffer size is excellent when shooting action shots. ( 9 frames at high speed) hits very in focus shots. The Sony XQD card when loaded is not seen by the camera right away, when first turning it on (approx 8 seconds) it will see the card. I sent the unit in under warranty and 3 1/2 weeks later sent back from Cerritos, California not from the New York repair facility where it was sent, a week to be shipped back. When I received the camera, the repair form stated the card reader was replace. I loaded the card turned the camera on and the same issue. It was never fixed. Does Nikon do any quality control, like test the item before sending it back? I have been a Nikon shooter since the late 70s my first camera was the EM. Nikon was always known for their quality and service. I am very disappointed, I also own the D810, which is also a great camera, but believe these will be the last Nikons I will purchase. I have a D3, that has never given me an issue, except the buffer limitation for action shots. I just have not been impressed with the quality of products being produced and the astronomical price being charged with total disregard to customer satisfaction, and standing behind their products. The battery that came with the D$ refurbished was at condition 4 which was also sent back, to me.The D4 refurbished is still very expensive. A friend of mine also had to send his D4 back under warranty for a broken door on the battery release, and 3 weeks later it broke again. I hope people read this and think out their purchases carefully.

Fast focus-always ready

It may sound redundant, but this camera is tops when photographing sports or fast moving wildlife. Its ability to track and focus is the best I've ever experienced within the Nikon family. If the first picture of a burst in action is not in focus, its definitely the second one. I would say about a third of the time, the first shot is in focus and 2/3 by the second, unless I've done something wrong (its not the camera). Low light-no problem. From an ergonomic standpoint, I have big hands and it fits very well. Its weight is off-set by the rounding of corners and balance/weight distribution. Its getting an upgrade, but the value of this body will last a long time.

Total failure for shooting sports

I have owned many Nikon DSLR's including 3 D700's. My D4 has focusing issues when shooting in continuous focus mode. I have tried all setting for priorities, focus and shooting. I can look at any game I shot with Nikon View and wonder why the focus point didn't lock. It has no logic at all. I can't shoot in CS-HS because it never stays focused on a moving subject. I set the camera in with over 500 files with a detailed set of questions on multiple sequences of shots. The camera came back after 4 weeks. First game I shot, the same focus issues remained. Very disappointed. Had many emails to Nikon asking what was done and where were answers to my many questions. Never got answers. It's a shame that a $6,000 camera does not work as advertised. Sending in a sequence of shots where the subject is in focus initially, but as the subject gets closer, the shots become more out of focus. I will say that it takes great shots when the subject is not moving and the focus mode is not in continuous focus mode.

A Camera Bred for Speed

The Nikon D4 camera body is well suited for photographing very fast wildlife on the run. The below photos of a cheetah running a straight 100 meter track were taken at Continuous High Speed shutter release, a shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second, an aperture of f/4, focal lengths of 300mm and 400mm, ISO values between 1250 and 1800, Center Weighted Metering, and Auto White Balance.

Less than 500 shots and now in service

Love the camera itself but I have put less that 500 shots on it and got an error code that required going back to Nikon. Im hoping this is a flute. But when it works its an awesome rig.

Great Camera

Use camera for covering sports and nature photography. The Nikon D4 is fast, quick auto focus, great image quality and file size and outstanding in low light with the high ISO's.

A Truly Remarkable Camera! IF you don't have issues.

Even two years after it's release, this camera stands the test of time. It's a solid workhorse with fantastic low light image quality that feels and sounds as a pro camera should! Until... You have any issues with it and then it's all downhill if you are out of the warranty period. This was one of the first cameras released so maybe that's the problem. In any event, here's my story. 13 months after I purchased it at Adorama, the mic input went out on me during the middle of a video shoot for a client. I sent it to Melville, NY for an out of warranty repair that took 3 weeks. 9 months later in the midst of a photo shoot for another client, any and all lenses stopped responding. In both instances a back up D800 saved the day. Out to Melville, NY it went again this time for a little over a month with some electrical related issue that had to be repaired again out of warranty. When I received the camera back, it worked for all of 10 minutes before it stopped working and wouldn't even turn on. In less than a year I've had more issues with my Nikon D4 camera than I've had over the previous 5 years across 4 different Nikon bodies that all saw more video and photography action than my D4. I pride myself on really taking good care of my equipment, but at least in my experience, this is not your daddy's war camera and thus it gets 1 star for its durability and 5 stars for it raw technical prowess.

Upgraded to Nikon D4Camera w Nikkor 80 to 400 mm Lens

Tried to go less camera after using the D3 and associated Nikkor lenses. Process too difficult. So I Upgraded to Nikon D4Camera w Nikkor 80 to 400 mm Lens. I'm happily in the saddle once again. I cover sports action for the local college and some high schools. I have all the range I need for football, baseball, golf (shoot after ball is struck), basketball (use no flash) and tennis. I prefer the zoom over multiple lenses to obtain the cover I need. Convenience wins over multiple lenses requiring lens changing as you go. This described combination consistently has produced outstanding images for daily print media. Richard.

Ergonomics rock!

Just got the D4 body yesterday and have been busy shooting with D3. The D4 feels real natural in my hands as did the D3 did after F-100. Only complaint: How do I load Provia 100F into this thing?

Great Camera But Needs Some Fixes

Yes, all the 4 and 5 star ratings are highly warranted in the previous reviews and this is a truly great camera. My problem with the D4 is that the two fastest consumer flash cards available are not compatible when used together in the camera. I spent the extra dime and purchased a Sony XQD S and card reader. A SanDisk UDMA 7 compact flash card came bundled together with my D4 purchase. Naturally, I put both cards in the camera right out of the box. What occurred next almost had me sending the camera back to the retailer. The first thing that happened when I turned the on camera is that I got a CF Card Error in the display and the camera was locked-up. I was unsuccessful reaching Nikon but was able to speak to a Nikon tech when the retailer technical rep made the call for me. In a conference call, all the Nikon tech support person would only say is that the SanDisk UDMA 7 card was not compatible with the camera. In disbelief we hung-up with Nikon and retailer approved a return due to a camera malfunction. Well that’s not quit the end to the story. As it turns out, after quite a bit of internet research, there are various flash card incompatibility problems with the newer Nikon cameras. This is not well known and you will not find anything about it on Nikon’s web site. As for the D4, the SanDisk UDMA 7 card is compatible with the camera. However, it cannot be use simultaneously with the Sony XQD card is in the camera. There is a conflict with the 2 fast cards in the camera together, but I can't say why. The UMDA 7 card will work in the camera when the XQD is not in the camera. The funny thing is that a lower speed (approved?) compact flash card will work simultaneously with the Sony QXD in the camera for overflow or combination writing. After my research, I added a SanDisk UMDA 6 and a way old SanDisk CFX card in combination with the Sony card and had no problem. I can only guess that Nikon wants to push the XQD into the high-end camera market. In addition, I have experience considerable focus jump while tracking fast moving subjects, no matter the camera setting. I also discovered, while using the XQD card, there considerable image load delay with rapid shutter releases. With a buffer display reading 50 frames continuous, I experienced a considerable release delay firing about 90 frames non-contagious over a 48 second period. I certainly hope Nikon will develop firmware update to the D4 so both fast storage cards are compatible together and address focal jump issue. With all this said, I decided to keep the camera but have buyers remorse. I don't see much advantage over my D3s, but I needed a second body. I would recommend the D4 but might consider a good used D3s knowing what I know now.

Great Camera

It doesn't get any better than this. I was shooting a Canon 7D and 5D Mark2, both great cameras. I like the external control buttons a lot. I thought I would miss the big Canon control wheel, but I don't. I do miss the C1, C2 and C3 custom control and Nikon banks are a poor replacement. I think I like the chip set in the Nikon better than my Canons. Tones seem to be more natural without correction. This camera is easy to shoot, and while it is expensive, I don't think you can find a better camera.

D4 is Fantastic!

I use the D4 to compliment my Leica setup which I reserve for static subjects. The D4 is an unbelievably awesome machine with unprecedented focus tracking and clean noise free images to high iso's. I shoot everything in RAW, make sure I capture everything correct in camera and convert to DNG upon import to Lightroom. The files are fantastic right out of camera. Very happy with the results of this body. The 85 f/1.4G, 200 f/2G II and the 70-200 f/2.8G II are what I have shot with this body so far all with very impressive results. The bokeh of the 85 and 200 are very pleasing and appreciated in my style of photography.

Simply the best

Upgading from Nikon D300, that's the best camera I have ever had. Simply the best camera avaiable out there. Terrific dinamic range, colours, shape, super-fast autofocus and shutter speed. ISO is superb. I do reccomend everyone could make this investment go ahead. The only con is the price.

The D4 is a fine next step for Nikon

After reading critical blogs regarding the D4 I still forged ahead. I couldn't be happier. This camera is as billed - extremely fast focus and burst speed. The increased megapixels are a big advantage if you are limited to focal length. I have had the D4 about three weeks and the transition from the D3s is virtually seamless. Just like purchasing a new car, all of the controls are there but the buttons may have moved. It's not a problem and I have had no trouble in that regard. The performance is truly incredible - of course that won't be realized until you actually pull the trigger yourself. Image quality is outstanding. I shoot sports and would recommend the D4 to anyone in the field.

World Class Camera!

The best I have ever seen at low light, speed at 11fps, incredibly quick focus and frankly the best sports camera I have ever seen. Brilliant Nikon!!! As a professional I need to have a camera that works---all the time, under some very harsh environments and helps me continue to build my business--this is the camera you want in your bag!!!

Top of the line all the way

Still feeling it out but nothing but pluses so far. The use of XQD and CF cards is very impractical and makes you purchase and cary two different card readers. I sure hope they come out with a duel reader that can use both to upload pix. This camera is top notch.

Amazing performer

I've shot with the D4 since day 1. I am a full time photographer and shoot everything from multi-day national events to corporate portraits, wildlife and stock. The D4 is the best camera for almost everything I shoot on a daily basis because of it's amazing high ISO performance and speed. For everything I need at higher resolution I also have the D800. The only slight disappointment I have with this camera is that although I use it right up to ISO6400 and occasionally at 12800, it wasn't the leap that it was from the D2X/D200 to the D3. I'm actually happy it's not higher resolution because it's nice to have a daily shooter with amazing speed and high ISO quality and not have to lag my system and post-processing with super high resolution images when they're not needed that large.

Upgraded from d3s to d4

I upgraded from a d3s that I owned for a couple years to the d4 which I have owned since August of 2012. The upgrade is well worth it for the additional features and image improvements over the d3s. I have found the d4's exterior is a little more rounded than the d3s and fits my hands perfectly. The transition between colors is smoother than the d3s. The auto focus detection at f8.0 seems to make the auto focus quicker and more accurate when I use my tc1.4EII and tc1.7EII. I can shoot birds in flight using the tc1.7EII because of the quickness and accuracy of the auto focus. The tracking in which I usually use the 21 point is amazing. It seems to acheive focus quickly and tracks well. I shoot mostly wildlife with birds in flight as my favorite subject. The exterior buttons which control settings are similiar to my d3s with some minor changes, but I did not have much of a learning curve on the d4. I have gotten better using the proper settings on the auto focus getting a high rate of keepers that are sharp. Lots of options using auto focus in which some people may have trouble figuring out the setting best for their style of photography. It has taken me a while to experiment with the auto focus settings to give me what I want to see in an image. Nikon has a winner with the d4. I tried out the d800 by renting one and decided that the d4 was best for fast moving subjects and can be used for a many different types of photography. Don't kid yourself, the d4 is also good for event shooting or landscape shooting, not a single use camera.

Fantastic Camera

I am a serious hobbyist photographer. Not a day goes by that I am not taking pictures of something or other. I've been using the Nikon D7000, which is a great camera, but I wanted a full frame camera for improved low light performance. The price tag of the Nikon D4 made it seem completely unattainable to me, but I am 40 years old and never owned a pro camera before in my life, yet I am an obsessive picture taker so I decided to splurge and I went for it and I can't even believe the difference in the performance of the D4 (of course, I now have nothing to retire on, but...# I don't regret spending the money one bit. It's absolutely fantastic and worth every penny. I have nothing bad to say about it at all. The construction is solid, the image quality is gorgeous and it's lightning fast, which is great for me because I take mostly photos of babies and animals #dogs, running horses, etc), who are always on the go. It's heavy, but I still have my trusty Nikon D7000 for an everyday in my purse kinda camera and the Nikon D4 comes out when my sole purpose is to go out shooting. I see a lot of complaints from reviewers about the two card slots for two different kinds of memory cards, but I don't mind it. The Sony QXD card performs like no other - it writes super fast. I highly recommend this camera for any serious hobbyist or pro photographer. It's the best DSLR I've ever owned. Since I started using this camera and sharing the photos with family and friends, I've been asked to shoot two weddings, corporate & actor's headshots and family portraits. I have no plans on becoming a paid Photographer, but the offers have been very flattering and a testament to what a wonderful camera this truly is.

If you have the cash, Drop It!

If you have the ability, stop sitting on the fence and drop the cash! I shoot a ton of sports and the D4 will rock your socks off! Lightning Quick AF, Incredible tracking and the high ISO is simply delightful! You will have so many keepers that you never had before, you won't know what to do! I shoot a lot of Hockey in poor lit amateur rinks and after PP, it looks like I'm shooting in a Pro arena! The Pro arenas are even more impressive! Daylight and Pro stadiums are just spectacular!

Awesome, just awesome

I am totally in awe with this camera I can shoot at 12,800 without any problem. I shoot wildlife, low light is fact of life in this type of shooting especially in the early morning or evening. The D4 performs beautifully at these times. The D3s blew me away however the D4 take the cake. Best Nikon I have ever owned.

The D4 is the absolute best camera I have ever owned

Okay, had an F5, then I went digital starting with the D100. I have since owned a D200, D300, D5000, D700, and D7000. I only state this so you know where I am coming from. I am very familiar with the Nikon "way" and can relate to the evolutionary process that has led up to the D4. This camera is just simply outstanding in every way. ISO performance is much better than the D700. The quality of the NEF files that come out of this camera are just mind blowing. I cannot compare it to anything else I have had experience with. Skin tones are dead on, and the ability to pull detail out of the deepest quarter tones is down right scary. Even when you think you've blown the highlights - you may just be surprised to find that you haven't. I shoot mostly nature/outdoor photography but I also like to shoot people in intimate settings. With natural light you can get some really magical captures. Even with a Speedlight with a simple diffuser attached to the hotshoe you will be amazed. AF is amazing and wicked fast. I like the use of the new XQD cards but I have to say coupling that with CF technology is probably not a good idea. When you pick this baby up and nestle it in your hands you instantly get it! You simply do not want to put it down. Genius level ergonomics. Even though it is lighter than the D3 it is a little heavy to me since I have spent a lot of years with smaller cameras. But that's okay, it fits so well in the hand that the only time you notice the weight is during down times. While shooting its weight seems to drift way out into the back of your mind. I also just purchased a D800 at the same time as the D4 and I have to say that I have yet to take that camera out on a shoot. I know I should but I just can't leave the D4 in the bag. It seems almost criminal to do so. I'm not the most technical shooter out there but I know cameras and the D4 is the pinnacle of camera design. Get one now!!
