My D500

This camera is all around and light weight. I own a D750 and D850 as well, but like to take this one out on day trips. I also use the D500 for indoor kickboxing in low light. I am very happy with the results. Thanks Nikon.

A remarkable camera

I'm an amateur bird photographer and I got this camera primarily for its 10fps frame rate. It turns out that the D500 is remarkable: focus speed, clarity, etc. Coupled with the 500mm f5.6 PF lens, or a 200-500mm zoom lens, the picture quality is amazing. Highly recommended.

Nikon D500 4 The Win!

Excellent dslr and something I?ve wanted for a long time! With news that Nikon is discontinuing the D500, it was pull the trigger time! I?m not ready to spend thousands on new lenses and a new system! The D500 is a proven winner!

Not durable. Google ERR messages $$$$

Google ERR messages. Quality at Nikon has gone WAY downhill. Just paid 250 bucks to have the shutter repaired on an absolutely babied 363 day old body. Might be time to dump all the nikon gear and go to a company still building high quality cameras they stand behind.

One is not enough.

After getting my first D500, I just had to have a second "backup" D500. This camera is all they say it is. I have a mirrorless also, and I enjoy it. But there is nothing like having a DSLR in your hands.

High expectation, but mixed result

I like aviation. I take pictures of airplane both on the ground and in sky. I choose D500 because its fast continuous shooting capability. I waited quite a while since D500 has been on backorder quite long time. Once I got it, I took it for a try. Without doubt, the fast shooting mode is incredible. I love it. But I noticed a problem: the exposure seems a bit off. The pictures appear dark, darker than my old D7100. The color is not bright and not vibrant. In the past, I was so pleased to see the difference between D80 and D7100. But to be honest, D500 is not as good as I expected. I contacted Nikon. i wish they can help me to solve my problem.

Beast Of A Legend

This beast of a legend lives up to it's reputation as the DX Flgship. Absolutely fantastic. Took a while to finally get my hands on a new one, but it was well worth the wait. Built like a tank. Similar to my D7500, so it didn't take long to figure it out. I love this thing.

Still the best wildlife camera ever made

I have used this camera for years. I know PROS who just bought two more of them in January 2022. Thom Hogan one of the most well known photographers in the world still rates this as easily the best for wildlife long distance. The D7500 is also a great camera, but the D500 is truly world class. This camera should be made in a mirrorless version soon!

Last D500 as they seem to be going away?

I'm liking the camera. Only problems after I got it, Nikon put out news product was discontinued, parts support would not be available in 6 years... Also, software has changed how & CFexpress memory card can be used Vs. old XQD. But most information focused on the XQD card so shopping for a CFexpress card is hard, you don't know how much to spend as the min speed needed is hard to pin down. I just went with the SanDisk CFe along with the Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-II cards and so far I can shoot 200 shots without filling buffer in RAW; set to one card at a time. I picked camera due to my having lens and I don't like non-DSLR viewfinder.but took me long time to go digital. As for Adorama, they got me the hardware, I had no clue when it was going to come as it was on backorder and no one had a cue when they could get hands on them. The pre-order process was the only way. The box was shipped ok. I ordered from them per the suggestion of Ken Rockwell's website.

Great product!

Although I've only been able to use the product once, I really liked the soft lighting provided by the MagSphere. I especially appreciate the ease of changing between accessories using the magnetic MagGrip.

Best decision on new equipment in a long time.

I had been planning on upgrading my camera bodies for the last few years and the D500 seemed like the best choice. This camera body had all the features I was used to and just the right added features. My photography spans from active fire scenes to live music performance, all of which demand performance out of equipment as well as being rugged enough to survive the environment. Fire scenes and outdoor music performances can be wet, dry and have wide swings in temperatures. This camera [I shoot with 2 to avoid getting the inside of the body contaminated changing lenses] is reliable and has the same fit in my hand I'm used to.

You will Like The D500

I liked the D500 right away. It took a while to figure out the new button placements, which soon felt natural. The camera feels and looks well built and takes great pictures. This was a good upgrade from my D7200.

D500 -- Pro level DX powerhouse.

Thus far, this is the best camera I've ever owned, and I've loved 'em all. Very high build quality and functionality make up a phenomenal photography tool. The AF is fast and deadly accurate in all modes, especially continuous AF. Whether at a ballgame or airshow, the D500 consistently hits focus, even when shooting wide open and panning. At the NY Airshow, I shot over 950 images the first day and still had 47% battery life left. The XQD cards aren't cheap, but I don't think I'll ever need more than one or two. I love this camera.

Excellent crop sensor camera.

I bought the D500 camera when my D7100 was stolen. For me, I noticed a significant improvement in the quality of my photos. The automatic White balance works very well and has virtually eliminated problems with off color photos resulting from having the wrong white balance setting. Snapbridge makes it easy to transfer selective photos to my phone easily.

Delivers all you could want in a camera!!

Delivers everything I wanted and more. The quality is there and ease of use. The pictures I get with this are beautiful... stunning! I was really nervous about spending this amount of money but am so happy I did!! There really isn't anything I don't like. It feels sturdy and comfortable in my hand.

Great camera

I have had my Nikon D500 camera for nearly 5 years and have used it for animals and landscape photography on safaris in Africa, for travel, people and landscape photography in Asia, for family photos, and for birds in flight. The camera has held up very well even in the face of 2 significant drops that damaged lenses. Fast autofocusing. Excellent low-light qualities.

Rock Solid Nature and Sports Camera!

Was shooting with the D7000 and a point and shoot DSLR 5300. Both decent camera but then I jumped in headfirst into the Digital Mirrorless and that was fun, but now I am shooting a ton of sporting events, kids, Skiing and Cross Country Track, etc. Needed something faster with little to no buffer issues with great image quality and reliability, and this is for sure it! If you shoot Nature Photo's and Sports and even Portraits this is a decent do it all camera. Love the Dual Memory slots and how you can customize this camera to make it easier to use.

About Nikon D500

PRO REVIEW by Alex Stead, Adventure and Travel Photographer

"The last two seasons of "On The Road" have been vlogged on this camera and it has been indispensable and a true workhorse in the series. Its smaller file sizes make processing the day's work much quicker without sacrificing video quality."

Nikon D500

Nikon D500: Fast Speed, Reach and Connectivity

The D500, a DX-format DSLR with pro-level features that gives photographers nimble handling, speed and extreme processing power in a compact and lightweight body. With amazing imaging capability, robust build quality and lightning fast performance, the D500 is sure to satisfy as the highly sought-after successor to the venerable D300S. Like its sibling the D5, the D500 benefits from Nikon's latest technological innovations such as the totally new, blazing-fast Multi-CAM 20K 153-point AF system and 4K UHD video capture, yet adds a fun new way to share photos with Nikon SnapBridge built-in.

Key Features:

  • Powerful 153-point AF
  • Approx 10 fps for up to 200 shots
  • Compact DX system added agility in telephoto shooting
  • 4K UHD video, suitable for professional productions
  • EXPEED 5 image-processing engine
  • Achieves sensitivity up to ISO 51200, expandable to Hi 5
  • Touch-screen, tilting 8-cm/32-in high-resolution monitor
  • SnapBridge support

Pro-Level Image Quality & Versatility

The D500 imagines the best of both worlds, offering advanced enthusiasts and pro photographers all the benefits of DX-format, such as smaller form-factor and lens crop, combined with many of the same advanced pro features found in the new Nikon D5. The new Nikon D500 features an all-new 20.9-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor that renders images with outstanding colors and gorgeous tonality. This new sensor is coupled with Nikon's new EXPEED 5 image processing engine, affording low noise and maximum processing power with a surprisingly small footprint and superbly balanced body. Because amazing images can happen even when the sun goes down, the D500 is capable of excellent low-light performance, with an ISO range of 100-51,200, expandable to 50-1,640,000 equivalent. From low-light cityscapes to action sports under the lights, the D500 is ready to tackle any imaging challenge.

Performance Meets Portability

Within the streamlined body of the D500 is a formidable processing powerhouse. Whether photographing sideline sports for the home team or animals in exotic destinations, a super-fast 10 frames-per-second (fps) burst speed with full AF and AE will help nail nearly any shot. This extreme speed lets users capture every fleeting moment in exceptional clarity, while a generous buffer allows for up to 79 shots (14-bit, uncompressed RAW/NEF) to be captured, so the moment won't be missed.

Performance Meets Portability

Controls and Rugged Construction

The D500 features the same rugged weather sealing as the Nikon D810. The durable body is a monocoque structure composed of magnesium alloy for the top and rear, while the front is reinforced with lightweight carbon fiber. The shutter mechanism has been tested for 200K actuations. For further durability, the D500 excludes a pop-up flash, yet is compatible with Nikon's newest radio frequency capable flash, the SB-5000 Speedlight (with optional WR-R10 & WR-A10)1.

Nikon SnapBridge means Constant Connectivity

Share photos wirelessly with the new Nikon SnapBridge. SnapBridge allows for Bluetooth2 supported connection between your camera and compatible smart device. You can also tag images for transfer in camera and can password protect their connection for added security. As an added benefit, the D500's built-in Near Field Communication (NFC)3 capability easily connects the camera to a compatible smart device with just a tap, while built-in Wi-Fi3 capability allows for faster wireless image transfer. For an even faster transfer solution, the D500 is also compatible with the new optional WT-7A Wireless Transmitter, enabling wired or wireless transmission of files to an FTP server or computer at faster speeds.

Cinematic 4K UHD Performance

Cinematic 4K UHD Performance

For the first time in a Nikon DX DSLR, you can harness the power of 4K UHD video recording. Capture every moment in cinematic, ultra high definition detail at up to 30 frames per second. Other features include a built-in interval timer and 4K UHD quality time-lapse function, which allows you to easily create 4K UHD time-lapse movies in-camera that are sure to impress.

Lighting the shadows

Lighting the shadows

Built into the D500 is compatibility with Nikon's new radio controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting system. Using radio control technology, when combined with the optional WR-A10/R10 transceiver (requires firmware version 3.0 or later), the D500 can control and wirelessly fire the SB-5000 Speedlights indoors or outdoors in bright sunlight.

Advanced Video Features

Just like the D5, the D500 has the ability to capture striking 4K UHD video at up to 30p (3840x2160), as well as Full HD (1080p) video at a variety of frame rates. Ready for any production, the camera sports a host of pro video features derived from the D810, including uncompressed HDMI output and Picture Controls, but adds even more great features. These pro-level creative video features include the ability to create 4K time-lapse movies in-camera, Auto ISO smoothing to provide fluid transitions in exposure during recording, and the capability to record 4K UHD video to the card and output to HDMI simultaneously. When capturing 1080p Full HD content, the camera also has a new 3-axis electronic VR feature that can be activated regardless of the lens being used. Challenging video exposures are no problem for the D500, as it also adds in Active D-Lighting to Full HD video to balance exposure values within a scene to help prevent blown-out highlights

Advanced Video Features

Powerful 153-point AF system

To keep pace with the action, the D500 is fitted with the same AF system as the Nikon D5, the Multi-CAM 20K AF sensor module, with a separate dedicated processor for AF function. On the D500's DX format sensor, the 153-point AF array fills the frame from side to side, letting users flawlessly track and lock-onto subjects from the edges of the viewfinder. Like the D5, the D500 utilizes the new 180K RGB Metering system and Advanced Scene Recognition System to help ensure balanced exposures and fantastic color rendition in nearly any shooting situation.

Powerful 153-point AF system

Feature-Rich

It's easy to compose and view images on the D500's bright 3.2-inch, high resolution (2359K-dot) touchscreen LCD, which lets users interact with photos in playback, control the camera and operate menus or use the reinforced tilting LCD screen, similar to that of the Nikon D750. Additionally, images are rapidly written to either a fast xQD card slot or to the additional SD card slot for maximum workflow efficiency.
