Great Camera for Amateurs

This camera is easy to use, delivers consistently high quality images undeer a variety of conditions. However, although the kit lens is excellent, to get the most of this camera would require an additional lens in the 55-200 zoom category.

Love, love, love my Nikon D5000

I use my camera mainly to shoot my sons at football, baseball and wrestling. We also have a friend that races pro circuit in Motocross and I always have my camera to shoot him during qualifying and the main event. The manual that comes with the camera is very specific and a great reference guide for when I am trying to achieve a specific affect. I taking pictures of my kids and sometimes I will have them pose for me in the backyard. I have also purchased a 300mm zoom lens, faster flash that mounts on top of my camera, a tripod and a remote shutter thing. These are pretty much all must haves! I hope what I have said helps. Good luck!

Great Camera!

I love taking pictures but I am not a professional by any means. My husband uses a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and he purchased this for me because although I love taking pictures I have NO desire to lug something like his around. I generally use the camera to snap shots of my kids at home and on outings. I also use it for family gatherings and outings with my friends. It works great even in Auto settings. I've learned my way around the manual settings pretty fast as well. It's not too light and not too heavy. I would recommend purchasing a neck strap so that you don't have to walk around with it in your hands (especially for parents like me when out with children). My only complaint for the camera would be that while in live view it can cometimes take up to 10 seconds for the camera to focus. That's super irritating when you're taking pictures of time sensitive objects...like my kids :) Otherwise, I believe that this camera is a great camera for someone who is not a professional but enjoys being able to take great pictures.

Great Camera

This is my first DSLR and I'm very impressed by how much this camera does and how well it does it all. I've only had this camera for a few weeks and I haven't found anything about the camera I would change. I got the kit lenses and while the lens are pretty good, I do wish they was a little faster. I've had no problems with the the camera controls or the menus, I personally find them more intuitive than the on the Canon Rebel. The quality of the images is outstanding.

Great camera at a great price!

Bought the D5000 in a kit with two lenses, a bag, and a Nikon intro DVD for my 19yo son. So far, he's loving it! This is a great entry-level to intermediate camera, the image quality is fantastic.

First DSLR

I bought this camera after looking for a DSLR for over a year. I had a few friends recommend this one to me. I love this camera, it is my first experience with something other than a point and shoot. It is easy to use and I have loved reading through the manual and another book I bought learning all the features this camera has. It has more features than I expected and know how to use, but I will figure it out.

I am glad I bought the D5000

This is my first DSLR. I checked many reviews, and decided on the D5000. I got this with a kit lens and a 70-300 zoom, and an extra battery. I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this camera to any beginner. If you decide to leave the point and shoot world, give yourself some time to get going with one of these. Its a great camera.

Great camera at a great price.

I went out to Temecula wine counrty and shoot alot of different shoots. At Wilson creek vinery the flowers and landscape were perfect to try out my new Nikon , my pictures look great. I drove down the road to South Coast winery and there was an event going on , it was an Austin Healey monthy meeting. There were alot of different color sport cars that gave me a chance to take angle , side , top shoots with unbelivable detail. Can not wait to get out and shoot more

Love It

I use it to take candid family pictures/video mostly, but also to photograph my flowers/garden. I really like that there is virtually no delay in taking the picture when hitting the shutter button as there are in PNS cameras. However, i'm not pleased that it does have a little delay when you use the live view, but it is only a second.

Fantastic Camera!!!

This camera does EVERYTHING! Not noting any CONS, The Nikon D5000 is a versatile, easy to use and highly functonal camera. Not only does it take fantastic photos, you are able to touch up, apply filters and configure photos in the camera. It also provided detailed information about each photo. The features are much more than I can describe. Fantastic value, great camera.

This camera is best suited to the casual/family photographer who has out grown a point and shoot or some one who demands the best image quality but doesn't want to shell out a lot of cash for a D90 or D300. I gave the camera to my sister and she can get 90% out of the camera without knowing too much about photography, that says a lot.

I would recomend the Nikon D5000

So far I have used the D5000 to take some great outdoor shots as well as indoor family pictures. I was into film photography with SLRs for about 25 years then with the family and such only took digital point and shoot stuff. Now I am back into SLRs on the digital side and am quite impressed the Nikon. It is intuitive to find where things are and easy to use. It gives me all the flexibility I need to compose my shots. Everything operates smooth and quiet. It is a jewel. [...]

Great Camera!!!

I bought this camera for my wife. She had a Nikon D40 package that I bought for her a couple of years ago, but unfortunately was stolen. This camera is INCREDIBLE! I have nothing bad to say about it. A great still camera and a fine video camera all in one...What more could you ask for?

Fast easy handling

I've been waiting for Nikon to come out with a swivel/live view dslr. My original 990 had amazing macro capabilities and when it died, I replaced it with a Nikon 8800. . . which I've regretted ever since. This time, I made the correct decision. Live view has a slow focus but my macro shots usually aren't moving very much. It's a great handling little camera.

All My Friends Are Jealous!

I am so excited that I have this camera.. its SO great!! I love how the LCD screen flips over, protecting it and making it opt to use. It takes awesome photos and works well with different lens'. The recording feat works nicely too. Still learning all the functions, which there are PLENTY of and the VR lens works really nice (photos dont come out fuzzed or blurry from shaky hands, ect)

Super Camera

By SUZANNE W.

I love this camera. I added a 4T diopter to the 200mm lens and it takes the most amazing macro photographs. Fast accurate focus. All the different modes are overrated; I never use them. Accompanying DVD was corny and much touted these modes. Video should have it's own setting and not rely on the modes. Video quality is good, however. Video also should autofocus. Not too fond of LiveView, much prefer the eyepiece.

The Nikon D5000 DX-Format Digital SLR Camera features an innovative Vari-angle monitor for an exciting new take on photographic expression. It adds a flexible dimension to Live View shooting, which vividly shows your subject in real-time. Now with this freely adjustable monitor, taking great shots and movie clips with Live View is easier and more enjoyable than ever.

Nikon's DX-format CMOS sensor with 12.3 effective megapixels records all the details of the original scene for breathtakingly lifelike photos. Shadows and highlights reveal exceptional details while a remarkably high signal-to-noise ratio vastly reduces noise - especially important when shooting at high ISO settings.

The D5000 enhances Live View shooting by giving you a choice of different display views. Minimize displayed camera settings when you want an uncluttered view of the scene, or show vital information at a glance for situations requiring a comprehensive readout of settings.

Different types of photos require different focus strategies and the D5000 has the right Live View autofocus mode for any occasion. Whether it's a unique expression, dynamic action, or a small object in a big composition, the four easily selectable modes help you stay focused for sharp results.

The D5000 makes it point-and-shoot simple to acquire clear, tack-sharp photos when composing via the bright, informative optical viewfinder. Whether your subject is off-center, moving fast, or completely unpredictable, the D5000 has the right autofocus solution.

The D5000's normal ISO range of 200 to 3200 can be expanded to cover ISO 100 to 6400, letting you capture the natural ambience of a warmly lit room or vibrant street scene when the use of flash or tripod isn't an option. The extended sensitivity is also ideal for shooting sports, allowing fast shutter speeds to freeze action.

The Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Lens is an ultra compact, lightweight standard zoom lens that has a 3x focal zoom range and is ideally suited for use with compact Nikon digital SLR cameras that feature the smaller DX sized chip. This lens offers the most basic zoom range in the DX lens series, an equivalent focal length in 35mm terms of 27-82.5mm. It will conveniently cover everything from tight indoor portraits to standard snap shots.
