Questions & Answers

LYNDA F : Don't know much about cameras - am looking for my son - so this is probably a silly question!! Is this or does it cover 35 mm?Glen H : The Nikon D5000 is a DX format digital camera with a crop factor of approximately 1.6X.
john k : What does the DX -Format mean and is this different than D in the Nikon D5000? The DX-Format terminology does not appear on your other offerings.RAMIRO G : they are the same camera, the difference is the the size of the sensor, one is larger than the other but the picture quality is the same.JOHN H : DX is Nikon's cropped sensor format. Most DSLRs from all major manufacturers are in this format (or very close). When you buy a Nikon lens, DX format means that you multiply the focal length by 1.5. So a 50mm lens has an effective focal length of 75mm on a DX camera like the D5000.WILLIAM (BILL) C : Nikon Digital Camera come with different size sensors for electronic image capture. When we shot with Film, we often used 35mm film which is 36mm x 24mm. Most of the Nikon Professional Digital Cameras (ie. D4) have full fame FX (36x24mm) sensors the same size as 35mm film. Most Nikon Consumer and Prosumer Digital Cameras (ie. D5000) have a smaller DX (24x16mm) format size. The DX cameras can use DX Lenses or FX lenses. An FX lens on a DX cameras uses a smaller image area of the lens or a "Cropped" area of the lens. This crop size is about 1.5x for Nikon DX Cameras. The smaller size of the DX sensor produces lower cost sensors and can use lower cost DX lenses. Yet DX sensors are larger than the m4/3 cameras and much larger than the sensors in compact Point & Shoot Cameras allowing the capture of higher quality images.MARCUS T : The D in D5000, simply means it's a Digital Camera. The DX designation means that this body has a cropped frame sensor. A full frame sensor (FX) is roughly the same size as 35mm film, while the DX sensor is about a 1/3 smaller. The smaller sensor makes DX cameras much less expensive than FX cameras. The most notable effect this has on your photography is that lenses gain an apparent zoom boost, (i.e. a 50mm lens will appear zoomed in as much as a 75mm lens on a full frame camera). This is great for shooting telephoto shots, but makes it more difficult to shoot wide angle shots. DX cameras will work with both DX and FX lenses.
Shopper : I'm trying to decide what to get. Why did you pick this one?MANUEL G : Well first of all i love Nikon. Second if you want a begginners camera buy a D3100 if you want a med buy a d90ANDREW T : I chose this model for strong quality and value, in addition to good reviews. I used a Nikon D70s for several years and was happy with the quality, choosing to replace it last year based on advances in focus system and improved low light performance.DANIEL K : If money is your major concern and you won't ever need video, then get the D5000 since it will be less expensive than the D5100. I have both the D5000 and D5100 from Adorama and the D5100 is clearly better (16 mPix sensor from the D7000, larger LCD that both pivots and turns and has much higher resolution than the D5000 LCD, high definition video with 20 minute limit per clip, 6 fps framing rate, and several other improvements.) Good luck DMKJOSEPH B : At the time it had a better than average video capability The two lenses in the kit were well recommended... Blogger Ken Rockwell said a lot of complimentary things about the camera's capability and the lenses. Jeff Revell has written a book on it.. "Nikon 5000"... very helpful...says a lot of good things about the camera. Getting on top of all its features is a challenge... and it has a lot of features. I've had good luck with it. It's performed very well. Joe BohartAMARISH M : I did lot of research on the Nikon products. And I found this refurbished at Adorama and I liked it. I usually get some refurbished electronics. Because they will be inspected by the Company. So, we can give a try.AGUSTIN L : Thank you for count on me, yes i pick this camera because NIKON reputation, on cameras plus, this camera have all you need to create nice pictures , is a solid investment, even my daugther is using for school events and no complaints about the camera , she's taking about 300 shoots in a single event with the same battery, and all in nice view. The other reazon to pick this camera is the price you can save some money on the same ithem if you decide to buy new, plus the camera came with warranty and looks like new when I take out of package, will be better if you buy the camera with the 55mm lens . Thanks and have Happy Holidays

Happy Customer

While looking for a used Nikon I stumbled upon Adorama and discovered I could buy a factory refurbished camera cheaper than I could a used one off ebay and gave them a call. I saved about $100 included the cost of shipping and couldn't be happier with what I received.

D5000

I borrowed this camera from a friend to photograph a wedding and I fell in love with it! I went out the next day and bought one for myself. I'm currently a photography student, so I wanted a reliable camera for school. I've been using a D80 for the past 5 years and I figured it was time to upgrade before I leave. The D5000 takes phenomenal photographs, I used the 50-200 mm telephoto lens for a majority of the wedding. I only had to switch out the battery once, and that was after having it on and shooting for 9 hours. I haven't done much with the video yet, but I can't wait to try a few time-lapses here and there.

Great D-SLR

I am a happily retired senior and have been a 'serious amateur' photographer since the early 1950s. I have owned and shot many brands of 35mm SLR cameras and tons of 35mm film. I was slow and hesitant to switch from 35mm film to all digital and my Nikon D5000 is my second D-SLR that I have been shooting for ~ 4-5 yrs.. I've never had a problem with my D5000 and the D5000 recall was a minor inconvenience that Nikon corrected rapidly and efficiently and I have never had any problem with my D5000 before or after correction. My only criticism with the D5000 is no motor in the body and not all Nikkor lenses will AF, otherwise the D5000 is a wonderful camera, very user friendly, reliable and versatile. Just make sure you own/purchase lenses that have AF motors and will AF on the D5000 body OR purchase the Nikon D90 body which has an AF motor and will AF Nikkor lenses w/o AF motors. I would recommend the Nikon D5000... It's worked very well for me.

Beautiful photos and simple to use

I have had the camera since June of 2010. I originally bought it for a family vacation and battled between the Nikon and a comparable competitor. One of my friends suggested the Nikon D5000 and another had the competing camera which they offered to sell to me so that they could get the Nikon. After putting both cameras in a toe to toe comparison and the recommendations, I went with Nikon. I am glad I did because I love the photos I have taken with it and the camera has made a novice photographer look like a professional. I only came to this site because I was looking at the wi-fi adapter and seeing if it is compatible with my camera. Sadly it is not, but I am so pleased with my D5200 that I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

First time DSLR owner and loving it.

I've had my D5000 now for just over a year and a half and I've loved every second of it. It's never failed me and I have nothing but great things to say about this camera. The images that it takes can be crystal clear if proper techniques are applied. I currently have the 18-55 kit lens, the 55-300 Nikkor lens, and now the 35mm 1.8 Nikkor lens. I STRONGLY suggest the 35mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.4 (or the 1.8) if you are looking to shoot indoors. To add to the indoor lighting issues that are sometimes found, I love the wide ISO range offered by this camera. It makes it VERY versatile. I've shot everything from portraits to long exposure (night) and outdoor sports. I can't wait to see what else I can do with this camera.

Excellent!

I got my Nikon D5000 for Christmas back in 2010 and it has not failed me, not even once. Simple and easy to use, I've constantly used it for the last year and a half, especially for my photography classes. It is actually much more simple to use than the provided Olympic cameras at my school. I definitely don't regret buying it!

All in one!

I've been a Nikon user ever since, starting with my D60 which really is fine and upgraded into D5000. This camera is really good. It shoots great photos. I captures good videos. It's just that, you need to treat this like your child. It's precious.

The Camera that brought me into the Photography game!

Photography was always a passion for me..... and as I grew, I felt the urge to start capturing moments as I saw them! The Nikon D5000 really allowed me to put my footprint into the photography game. It is/was a great entry level DSLR and it taught me so many aspects of a DSLR camera. Jumping straight into a D3 or equivalent didn't make sense unless you knew/understood photography as if you were looking at your own hand! The D5000 will never leave my side, but I will be stepping into the FX zone within the next few months. Nikon and the D5000 have transformed my eye into a self motivated business that I can now make a living out of! Full Frame here I come to show the world what I see!!!

Good but auto-focus issue has been annoying to too many of us.

I've had this camera for a few years and I love it, the main thing that bothers me is my AUTO-FOCUS stopped working and I need to look into getting it fixed. No one seems to be of help with that. *COUGH*

When I bought that camera, it was a wonderful discovery for me. Not only I picked up a great tool for my creativity but I also found quality, lightness, rubustness. The settings are very efficients, the buttons are well placed. You can quickly edit your settings to obtain what you need and want. I have a lot of memories, love and good moment with that piece of stuff !!!

Best starter Pro I could ask for

If your thinking about going from a point and shoot to a DSLR this is the camera for you. I have used friends cameras and they have been swell but the Nikon is solid high quality with a world of resources to suppliment any lack of knowledge one might come into the field with. My only recommendation is get a 50mm lens. While the kit lens served it's purpose well for a while; having the more expensive 50mm takes my pictures to another level; both because of the lens and because I get inspired off it. The refurb was in perfect condition.

This is my first dSLR

I’ve shot film with Nikon cameras for years, so this was a logical choice to get into digital photography with out spending the retirement. I’ve had the D5k for over two years now and it has done yeoman service. About the only gripe I have is there is no depth-of-field preview, but I can work around that. Pictures come out pretty sharp, so I don’t have to tweak that too much in the post-processing, and I find the noise is not too bad, though it does get a little noticeable in the high ISO ranges, but that is too be expected. Overall, I’ve been thrilled with the D5k and probably won’t be doing much in film anymore. (And my old Nikormat sits forlornly on the shelf)

Great mid level camera

this camera works great. It fit my budget and does all i need. I was a bit concerned on the flip screen. But now that i have it i cant imagine why nikon doesnt use that on all the cameras. Great feature. Going up the next level would be nice but since i dont make money with my shots this one does well. I use for work photos too for our marketing pieces and advertising.

Great Beginning DSLR

I think this is a great camera if you're a beginner with DSLR's. If you're JUST starting off in photography you'll need to read the manual thoroughly, if you've been serious about photography for a while and have already had a DSLR you'll probably want to go a step up from this. I'm hoping to get a new camera soon but it's not because this isn't a great camera - but I'm at the point now where I'm starting to do paid photo shoots and this can only do so much. I'd definitely suggest it for someone who is past the compact stage but not quite to the professional stage.

The D5000 is a well balanced universal camera

I have used more than 10 SLRs over the past 14 years. I own the D5000 for 18 months and would recommend the D5000 or the D5100. A good strobe light would provide suberb pics under all conditions. Don

The D5000 is a versatile tool with great features.

A week after the purchase I took it on a day trip to the Blue Ridge Mountain's Skyline drive taking advantage of its numerous modes. The feel of quality in material and the results in regard to the many shots I took was total satisfaction. Kudos to the 55mm lens: Between near macro and infinity, the different debths perception of mountain ranges and close ups was surprising !

No regrets, only going up from here

It's great for what I do. I use my NikonD5000 for event photography usually in night clubs and some portrait photography. I only had a budget of about $1500 for my mobile photography studio when starting my part time business. I'm used to working with the best equipment on my full time job, so I didn't have to compromise on quality when I purchased this camera. It is a refurbished item and I couldn't tell the difference. This is a good foundation and I can grow my business for here.

Photography has just gotten easier

I cannot say enough about this camera. This was the first DSLR camera for my wife and I. I did alot of research and talked with a few professional photographers before deciding on the D5000. I told one pro I wanted to take photos as good as his but needed a camera that is idiot proof. He recomended the D5000. We wanted a camera that could handle all of the photography needs we have with as little experience as we had. We do alot of travelling and take alot of photos and videos. On one of ou...

Great and versatile Camera

I do not have enough praise for my Nikon D5000 camera and Nikon’s support. It doesn’t get any better. We bought the Camera to take on a big trip to Alaska. I was just learning how to use it when it was recalled. I was worried about sending it and getting it back in time for our trip but not being able to turn it on was not a good option. We sent it in but it looked like it was not going to make it back in time. We contacted the support people and they worked with the repair people and we got ...
