Amazing camera

I am proud to be the owner of Nikon D5100. I pay attention to details that this camera gives me. Manual is very well written and easy to follow. I will never part from it. I hope you like this camera as much as I do. Your pictures will be amazing.

Excelente DSLR!

Foi minha primeira DSLR, fiz o upgrade para a D7100 recentemente, excelente câmera para quem está começando e para quem já está em um nível intermediário, nunca deu problema.

D70 to D80 to D5100 and will try D5500

I've had a series of digital cameras from the floppy disc Sony to the D5100. Immediately noticed the improved color and resolution with Fall nature pics and Christmas family shots. I used to use Photoshop to hype shots, but need very little editing. I will get the 24 mp D5500 because it should be better for sports and theater work. The mechanical buttons, whistles, are hype and can be bypassed with planning. I do dislike that Nikon has changed the autofocus because I have termendous lenses which are body-controlled. I have passed older models to children and grandchildren andit's wonderful to see the enthusiasm associated with having a solid camera and its nice to share with others.

Sad but good

Its a good camera, compared to my old D70s the metering and color is a noticeable improvement. However I am sad that I went with this modal. It is less pro then the D70s and some features I came to love and use regularly like the LCD panel or the bracket button, OMG I miss the bracket button. You have to jump through 3 flaming hoops to get this one to bracket and its still not really a usable feature. The D750 looks like my dream come true, but I will probably never be able to afford it, so I am sad. I love Nikon, the cameras are great with no complaints, I just made the wrong choice for me. Not an area where saving a buck is worth it I guess.

Great Starter Camera

I am an amature photographer and never owned my own DSLR camera until I purchased this one. It has proven to be a great starter camera. It's easy to use and has some cool features/settings. Some of the negatives is that it only shoots up to 20 minutes of video at a time, even though I'm using a 32GB SD card. When recording video, if it has to refocus it captures the sound of the motor (it's not very loud though). Adjusting the zoom is not smooth.

Compact Mighty Marvel

Bought this for my wife. I feel the 16mp sensor is really a sweet spot for DX in terms of image quality, high ISO performance, and reasonably sized files. Camera is wonderfully compact and light, making it a joy to carry around all day. My wife loves the articulated display, I couldn't care less about it. The built in auto lens distortion control is a God-send for correcting distortion in all the zooms and wides. Only thing I really dislike is the smaller, darker viewfinder, which is the norm for a cropped sensor camera. Overall, a great little camera with awesome image quality.

Mixed results

I have two D90's and wanted to try the D5100. Never could get a feel for it, just didn't work like the D90's. I finally sold it to a friend (his first DSLR). He LOVES it! Go figure. Everyone liked it but me. I must be wrong, wish I had it back now!

Good Performance for a Good Price

It is my first DSLR and I am amazed with it, because it has all the necessary elements that you need when you are interested in learning photography. it has an incredible image quality and color reproduction that I never got from a digital camera and also a good performance in low light conditions. No one of my photos has been modified with special Software, I only convert them from RAW to JPEG, and they were taken using M,P and S modes only.

Flash popup issues in couple of years

I was using this camera for couple of years and it started giving me problem with flash popping up, when I go to service center they said they will give me estimate in couple of days and will send me detail email, but I did not get the response for around 4days, when I called them back they said it will take around couple of more days to know the issue and they will send me email, but after 15minutes Nikon support (Lolitha) called me said issue is fixed and charges are around ($), I was shocked to listen to that, I asked for the estimate and they gave me bill of ($), I said I don't want that repair to be done because I can buy new better external flash with that price, and I declined the service and asked them to give me what is the part and service which costing me ($), then she said they don't have that information they need to contact internal support team and they will get back to me, if you are planning to by this camera please know about this issue which will start in couple of years which is soo soo expensive to repair it.

In 2 years camera broke the 3rd time. It gives me 'error . Press shutter release button again' constantly. Estimate fixing is almost the price for a new camera. Junk , switching to Cannon.

Impressive!

Bought this camera because I needed an upgrade from my mirror less. I was extremely impressed with the image quality. I've owned it for almost 4 months now & it still to this day, never fails to amaze me. I fall more in love with it with every use. Awesome for those photography addicts that aren't yet professional - perfect first DSLR.

Great First DSLR

I printed out the complete manual that came on the CD, learned where all of the controls were and took a digital photography class which has got me really comfortable with this camera. I highly recommend that all folks like myself that are new to DSLR cameras and the functions should do this. I know that I am getting so much more out of the creative control functions because I did. I hardly use the auto setting any more. Now it is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I do wish it had a dedicated ISO button. I have assigned the FN button to control the ISO. The kit lens that came with the camera seems to be doing a good job. I bought the 55-200 lens refurbished from the Nikon website. That also works great. I use both lenses regularly. I am so very happy with this camera and the lenses.

Nice for the price

Very good images. Easy to use. Easy to access most shooting modes from the back panel. The swivel screen is a must have for self portraits and video. Wish it had 5 exposure bracketing instead of 3 brackets. I really like its small size and light weight. My particular camera has picture control settings that I have to custom set to get decent results. For what you can get this camera for now as a refurbished model ($) currently on Nikon Store..... its a deal that can not be beat anywhere in photographic bang for the buck. Rock on my brothers... if your looking for a rock solid DSLR on a budget look no further.

Superb for the price

This was my first DSLR when I stepped up from a bridge camera. Wonderful - right decision on all counts. Fast, superb image quality - not far off the best if you invest in top quality lenses. 16 mega pixels is just about right for a good balance. (Note how the D4S and Df are 16 MP). Has more than enough pixels for detailed images, enough for a little cropping and the pixels are still large enough for low light performance and high ISO performance, I'm convinced this is the serious number camera manufacturers will drop back too. Huge plus point - the flip out screen, the lack of these on high end cameras is seriously holding off a decision to step up the range. Minus point - not weather sealed. Not too surprising at this price point so cannot mark it down. I confess to have flirted with a Pentax in the two years I've owned the D5100 to give me the ability to continue shooting when the weather turns but found it too inconvenient to have two different systems so the Pentax has gone. Am thinking of sticking with the D5100 (to keep the flippy screen) and getting a Nikon 1 AW and lens adapter - All weather and would suddenly have such a long telephoto lens at my disposal when I put the 70-300 on the AW with the adapter. It would also not take up much room in my camera bag.

Excellent DSLR for all.

Now I been off and on with DSLR Cameras from Nikon and Canon, both good Japanese cameras but Nikon has added the icy on my cake with this DSLR. Yes, it's a 16,2 MP camera and excellent features when comparing to a D3200 switch is a 24.2 MP camera. Both shoot great but there is something about the The D5100 that wins it for me. Light and not to heavy. Shooting in low light and so perfect, specially if you know what you are doing with low light photos. I would say, buy it while it's price here for $, too bad at the time of purchasing this camera it was $

Great camera for the dollar.

As an enthusiast, and not a pro , I like this camera& is the second D5100 I bought in the last 8months. It is really fast, has great color accuracy, large viewing screen, shoots from the view finder or the screen, has a lot of easy to use programs. there is a lot of new technology for the money. I have a D70,D200,D7100,but this is my favorite. It is in a cheap plastic housing & has no focus motor, but Im not photographing in Patagonia, and most of my lenses have their own focus motor. Super camera for the $.

A good camera for the price.

I am a pro photographer who uses shoots real estate, architecture, events, and portraits. I bought this used camera as a backup, it is my second D5100. The Camera itself is the second used camera I have bought from Adorama and again the camera was exactly how they described true to Adorama form. The camera is a great camera using the sensor from the D7000 the picture quality is very good and is worth it for the money. I do want to list a couple of Cons about the camera so you are aware of these missing features prior to buying it (They are minor for the features but I wish I had know prior to purchasing) Cons There is no wireless capability for the D5100 (Other than Eye-Fi or other wireless SD Card) As an intermediate camera it is not weather sealed (I used Desiccant Packs and rain guards in wet weather no problem yet) Recent Firmware upgrades disabled the use of some (all?) third party batteries. Battery grips are third party and have a wire that runs from the grip to the shutter due to lack of interface in grip. and last one - There is no fine tune adjustment for lenses that are slightly out. Only has Mono Microphone if your looking to do videos (can plug in a stereo mic though) I have used this camera to shoot low light Dancing at 6400 iso and have been able to get acceptable results after post processing.

Will produce excellent photographs.

I used this camera for macro, landscape, and just about everything. It's lightweight, well built, and can produce award winning photographs if YOU know how to use it. The old adage of it's not the camera, but the photographer is completely correct. This camera will do its part.

Great for 6 months then started to fall apart

I bought the nikon D5100 in March and I was extremely excited about it. It took wonderful pictures until about 2 months ago. The pictures were no longer focused especially in one area of the photos and the lens would make a weird noise when I would focus. I thought maybe it was the lens so I tried a different lens but the pictures are still poor and blurry.

Great even on Auto!

So I went Black Friday shopping and bought this camera on sale. This camera is excellent. I have yet to learn how to fully use Manual, but even with Auto this camera has auto-focus so you can still take great, professional looking photos. The 1080p movie is a dream come true! if you love videos this camera is also good because you can have the highest quality and it comes with a flip screen that is great if you do YouTube videos or need to see your motions. The audio is up to standard, though if you require professional sound this camera has an external microphone jack. Overall I have found that even on Auto and me being a newbie, this camera is very good quality and has much room for creativity,

Nikon's D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) delivers a galaxy of professional features in a consumer digital camera. A high-resolution 16.2MP DX format CMOS sensor and an ExPEED 2 image processing engine guarantee superb quality and high performance. The 3" vari-angle tilting LCD monitor allows you full freedom in composition, with sparkling 921,000-dot resolution. Full 1920 x 1080p video with full-time autofocus (for tracking subjects in motion) and stereo sound (using optional microphone) is always available, with in-camera editing and creative controls to bring out your inner director.

The Effects mode provides a dazzling array of special effects for putting your own individual stamp on all of your images-still photos or video. Selective Color, for instance, isolates any color within a scene, and Night Vision captures details in places too dark for your own eyes. High Key effect will create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere and mystery, or you can emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key, or Miniature Effect-which produces a scene that looks like a miniature scale model.

With sensitivity ranging from 100 to 6400 ISO, you'll be able to make photos and videos that are amazingly rich, even in low light. In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode will tame high contrast situations by automatically capturing multiple exposures of the scene and combining them for vastly improved contrast and low noise. A blazing fast 11-point autofocus system and split-second shutter response mean that you won't miss photo opportunities waiting for your camera to catch up. The built-in speedlight has i-TTL for accurate, well-balanced flash every time.

With the Scene Recognition system, 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II, 16 automatic exposure scene modes, and Active D-Lighting, your control over your photos and movies will be more precise and simple to carry out than ever. The automatic image sensor cleaning prevents dust from ruining any of your images.
