I am a beginner in DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) photography. Nikons’s D5500 camera, with the 18 to 55mm and the 55 to 200mm zoom lenses, for me, is the perfect camera to begin learning the art of creative photography. Please believe me when I say that photography is an art! You must have patience, imagination, an eye for the creative, and the acceptance that practice over and over again, will not make perfection, but will make a fantastic photo that you can be proud of. Don’t forget that you are the one taking the pictures, therefore, with the guidance from those more experienced from you, and the help of well written and interesting manuals and articles (such as the “for Dummies” books and especially Nikon’s own manuals, articles and proprietary software) it is you who is the artist no matter the level of experience. The D5500 will most certainly be the camera to aide you in taking any kind of photo you would like. From automatically taking gorgeous pictures without having to adjust the speed, aperture or time with its 24.2 megapixel resolution, to taking your pictures by manually adjusting your ISO, f stop and shutter speed, you will have a lot of fun learning and you will be rewarded with the efforts taken to produce your pictures With Nikon’s electronic manual for the camera, my Dummies electronic manual and Nikon’s photo software, I am slowly learning how to take good pictures so far. Once I progress to taking manual pictures, with ISO, f stop and shutter speed, I will be taking much better photos. I will be learning by taking pictures manually only with ISO, then only f stop, then only by shutter speed. Then I will incorporate all three together. My camera takes vivid, crisp pictures and it is I who must learn to frame them properly. The D5500 is easy to learn. My advice is to take your time to learn all the features of this wonderful camera, including the 3.2 inch colour touch screen, the different manual and automatic adjustments that can be made, and how each lense can affect the photos that you take. I highly recommend the Nikon D5500 for those beginners to pros who have, or want to have, a passion for the making of photos which you will want to keep and look at over and over again. Have fun taking your pictures with your Nikon D5500 camera.

You can spend more but that won't get you better. The Nikon D5500 has everything you could ever want at an affordable price. I have the 18-200 mm Nikon lens mounted on it and that covers every shooting situation I can think of. Put a photo taken with the D5500 next to a photo taken with a $4,000 camera and I challenge you to point out a difference in quality. I will never up grade because I already have the best in terms of value.

I purchased D5500 and am thoroughly impressed with it. The photos I took right out of the box were phenomenal. It handles all situations - from low light, adding flash, high speed, portrait, sports, whatever I threw at it, it handled with ease. I love this camera.

Ive owned this camera for about 8 or 9 months now. I bought it specifically for a trip I will be taking in July 2018. Ive used this camera on several occasions. I setup my camera to shoot in JPEG with FINE resolution. That means that I get an image approximately 3000 X 4000, which is a 12MP picture. I then crop the photo, and resize it to 2000, while keeping the aspect ratio. This is a great size to use my photos to create a DVD of the event. 99% of the pictures were taken with the flash disabled, and the camera adjusted the settings perfectly. Indoors, Outdoors, Outdoors at dusk, didnt matter. 300 photos in intense sunlight at Reno's Hot August Nights car show. 150 photos at a food and wine event on the patio that started in late afternoon and ran into the dark of night. Not using the flash and utilizing the lights that hung above the dining tables or above the dance floor was great. Im now learning to use some of the manual settings where I can purposely slow down the shutter speed to make the picture lighter. I love this camera.

Being relatively new to digital photography I wanted a camera that I could grow with as I became more knowledgeable in the art of photography as a serious hobby. At first I was overwhelmed by the options this camera has but as I read and practiced it all started to make more sense. I now appreciate just how versatile this camera is at an affordable price point. After a few months I am now using many of the features that it offers to make some really great pictures while not using just the auto mode. I am glad that I chose this camera to open the world of photography to me.

after owning the camera 13 months, the electrical board that controls the screen failed abd had to be repaired/replaced $250. Now the flash has stopped working, took it back the camera shop and we noticed a crack in the housing. ( this camera has never been dropped) and we sent it back to Nikon, $350 repair quote. I said NO to the repair, BUT the camera still works and I asked to have the flash repaired. Nikon refused. the camera is 2-1/2 years old and useless.

I have owned my D5500 for just over 3 years now. After spending a considerable amount of time learning the proper use of this camera and practicing to get better I am very happy with the results. To me this camera is lightweight, easy to use, intuitive, and capable of very good quality. I upgraded to this camera from a D3200. I have to say though to get results that I was really happy with I had to put in the effort to learn how to use this tool. I have watched hundreds of youtube videos thinking I would upgrade a year ago. But I keep going back to using my faithful D5500 because I did not think there was anything better in this class of cameras. And this is from a person that bought an Olympus OM2n in 1980 and still has and uses that camera all the time. I just felt Nikon D5500 was the best camera available for my budget. Finally after three years I bought a full frame camera from Nikon USA last week. A D750. But I am keeping my D5500 and am going to use it with the D750. And by the way, I have never had one problem with my D5500. It has been very reliable and I think the quality is quite good.

My first Camera was the D3100 and I decided to upgrade to the Nikon D5500. What a big difference, now I’m in love with the D5500. The experience with this camera makes me a pro how ever I’m still learning!

I have used DSLR camera's before and decided on a Nikon after much talk with hobbyists and professionals. My grandparents bought the 3200 and I was going to also; until I met someone who had the 5500. I instantly fell in love with the camera. I bought mine a couple months ago and got the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens kit at a fantastic price! I use it almost every day, mostly for taking photos of the moon and constellations. I have taken well over 3,000 photographs and am still learning a few things about my camera I didn't know before. I am an amateur photographer and this is my first DIGITAL DSLR, I have a Nikon Nikkor from 1972 and a Kodak Signet from 1952 that I've used. (So most of my camera's use is in manual mode)

I have to consider myself a beginner though I've owned an SLR film camera forever. The D5500, which I've had for a year now, has turned out to be exactly what I want in a DSLR camera. It is light weight and fits my large hand very well. The features/settings, to numerous to list here, are extensive and take a bit of study to fully understand but allow the user to dial in exactly what's needed to take great photos. If you're a novice, switch it to "Auto" and fire away. You won't be disappointed. I'm not going to comment much on the kit glass that came with my D5500, though I feel the kit lenses I purchased are great for the average user. As with most good cameras, the better the glass in front of the camera the better the results. Based on my research, if you want your photos to go from great to exceptional, put a good lens in front of this gem of a camera. I purchased a Nikon refurbished that had an 81 shutter count. So far so good!!

I used to have a Pentax Spotmatic, which I loved, often developed my own film, and processed my own prints in a darkroom. Wow, have things changed with the Nikon D5500. I can shoot "RAW" and in Manual mode, then play with the photos in post production to get exactly what I want. No messy darkroom. I love the high quality versatility of this camera in all different kinks of lighting situations. This is a great camera and it's easy to use...

Regrettably while traveling recently I lost my wonderful Nikon D5300. The image quality was outstanding. I replaced it with the D5500. Happily, same great image quality in an even smaller lighter body. I love the new Grip and enjoy the touch screen, although I am so use to not having one that I often forget to use it

I bought a Nikon D200 back in 2005 and LOVE it - but, I'm getting older and my D200 is feeling heavier and heavier when I'm walking on trails or hiking. I felt it was time to find a lighter weight camera - I wish I could have my D200 in a lighter camera shell...but couldn't find anything like that. So, I ordered a Nikon D3400....didn't like it; so I then ordered the D5500. I've only had it a few weeks, but so far I'm liking it. I don't need the video, editing area or some of the other features. I will be taking pictures at my granddaughter's wedding this next weekend and I am anxious to see how well it handles for me. I like the color of the photos, the ease of the menu settings and the flip screen. I didn't think I'd like the smart screen - but it only took a time or two to find out I LOVE it. I won't be getting rid of my D200 but I think I'll enjoy this D5500 for outings. I'll try to give an update after I use it 6 months or so.

I like the camera being so light to hold. The main reason in getting the camera was the swivel touch screen. I am still getting accustomed in using, so I still have a lot to learn about using it.

I bought a refurbished D5500 after spending 8 yrs with a D90. I liked the D90 tough, rugged feel but was bothered by its limitations in terms of high ISO and overall weight. The D5500 is quite the opposite. At first, it felt like the buttons and controls were made of cheap plastic but after a few days with the camera, I got used to it. It is light, the grip is very good. and the pictures are sharp. These were taken in a sunny day with a light breeze, handheld, and cropped (35 mm lens). I am satisfied so far. I have also taken some indoor photos and compared with the D90; definitely sharper with higher ISO. Lastly, the touchscreen is very convenient.

I wanted to migrate from Canon to Nikon. So i picked Nikon5500. This camera is really great and you can really take nice pictures. It is just to difficult to get use to this system if you come from Canon, which has a way better menu setup.

I bought a refurb D5500 from Adorama in November of 2015. I use it every day (I'm an NYC street photographer / photojournalist). I have a Vivitar battery grip powered by 2 wasabi batteries and a 55-300mm Nikkor f4.5/5.6 G ED VR. I dislike the puny buttons on the camera body but LOVE the astoundingly sharp SONY IMX sensor (no low pass filter - GREAT image quality), the long battery life, and the articulated touchscreen. I usually shoot with a 00 series or D7000/7200 but this camera is light and fast and the touchscreen is great - it rivals the external controls on more expensive bodies. Just a great camera and the refurb is very cost effective!

We made our first trip with the Nikon D55. I purchased the camera for my 9 year old granddaughter to take on our trips with her. She had some of her most beautiful photos ever. She loved the size of the camera. It is just a bit smaller than my D7100. I was worried about the speed . We like to take wildlife. She took her first bear photo and I could hear her camera just a clicking. It was very fast and clear beautiful photos. I was very surprised with the portraits she took. I will give this camera 5 STARS AND 100.

Great camera. I shot pics I didn't think I could do. Now I'm stuck in shooting in manual mode. The touch screen makes for easy instant reviews. A quantum leap.

First off, the deal was amazing. I have used a Canon T5i and was thinking of getting the T6i, until I did more research and found the Nikon D5500. Both cameras have great features, but for me, the Nikon won out mainly for its lighter, compact weight, longer battery life and feature set. Also the price difference. After using the Nikon now, I am so glad I chose it. It did not take long to get familiar with the controls. The deep grip makes it easy to hold. I shoot mostly in Manual mode and the LCD screen layout is well laid out and easy to read. This camera has a lot of customizable settings and the touch screen, articulating LCD works great. The two lenses are very good and take sharp photos.

Great camera: 95% of the features of the D5600, half the price. It gets the job done, very lightweight. Not sure what would happen if I dropped it - definitely not a magnesium frame.

I would say for a starter this is a great camera for the money. The quality is far better than I expected from this model. Then again it came with great lenses! The touch screen is very nice and responsive. Actually more responsive than my phone is! I would recommend this to any hobbyist or beginner All day!

Excellent camera overall. I don't see why someone would not want to buy this camera.
Love it!

I jumped from a 10+ year old D70s to this. And holy smokes I am blown away every time I shoot with it. I have found nothing I do not like. About the only thing its missing is a second wheel so you can adjust shutter and aperture at the same time...no biggie for me. And a depth of field preview...which would be nice. But never used it much on the D70s. Touch screen is great! I think this is the best bang for the buck by far and I did a lot of research before purchasing! Did have some problems ...

Sharpen your creative vision - Stunning, sharp, detailed photos & videos
To create amazing photos and videos, a digital SLR needs a great lens, a great image sensor and great image processing. The D5500 has all three. It's high-resolution sensor has no optical low-pass filter, freeing it to capture the outstanding details provided by NIKKOR lenses.
Enlarge or crop your shots without losing detail or sharpness. EXPEED 4 image processing handles all of that data with ease for clean, sharply defined images in low light up to 25,600 ISO, 1080/60p videos and an extremely wide dynamic range.
Touch and shoot from many angles - High resolution touchscreen Vari-angle LCD
A first for Nikon DSLRs, the D5500 features a touchscreen Vari-angle LCD for exciting new shooting possibilities and easier handling. Flip out the large 3.2-inch display for an interesting new angle, then simply touch where you want to focus and shoot.
A new Fn button gives you one-touch access to important settings like aperture, ISO sensitivity, AF mode and more. During playback, pinch to zoom in and check the details. Easily navigate menu items, set video settings and more, all as familiar as operating a smartphone.

The D5500 quickly transfers your creations to a compatible smartphone or tablet for easy sharing by email, texting or posting online, wherever you are - no hot spot needed. Your smartphone or tablet can even act as an external monitor and remote control for the D5500 - imagine the possibilities!
Create everywhere - Small and durable enough to grab and go
There's an old saying: the best camera is the one that's with you. The D5500 is designed to always be with you. It's small and lightweight (just 14.9-oz), so you won't mind taking it along.
Its strong and durable (thanks to a monocoque structure featuring long-fiber reinforced thermoplastics), so you won't worry when conditions get rough. And its ergonomic design and easy-to-use controls will have you shooting the pictures you've always wanted in no time.
Focus on the moment
The D5500 delivers outstanding speed and accuracy to help you catch all the moments that matter - smiles, tears, big plays and big hugs. Its 39-point AF system includes nine highly accurate cross-type sensors for enhanced AF accuracy. Freeze moments by shooting up to 5 frames per second, or extend moments with unlimited continuous shooting at shutter speeds between 4 and 30 seconds for stunning star trail images.
Make it cinematic
Cinematic storytelling is at your fingertips with the D5500. Capture Full HD video at a frame rate of 60p with tack-sharp details, vibrant colors and high-fidelity stereo sound. An improved full-time autofocus keeps moving subjects sharp, and advanced Picture Controls like Flat and Clarity make it easier to perfect your movies in post-production.
Enjoy the view
When you're capturing fast-moving action, especially outdoors, you need a clear view of what's happening. That's when the D5500's high-quality optical viewfinder really comes in handy. Put the camera to your eye and enjoy a beautiful, glare-free view through the lens. Take your shot, and the moment you pull the camera away from your eye, the D5500 automatically displays it on the LCD for you.
Let the camera do the work
The D5500 is a highly intelligent camera that makes it easy to take great photos and videos. Nikon's innovative Scene Recognition System uses information from the camera's 2,016-pixel RGB sensor and image sensor to analyze the brightness and color of a scene. It then compares your shots to a database of thousands of similar shots, and then optimizes the camera settings white balance, focus tracking, flash information and more - to ensure you get optimal results.
Show off your creativity
Take a series of photos at fixed intervals for up to 9,999 frames that can be combined into jaw-dropping time lapse sequences*. Make a scene look like a miniature model, highlight one color within a B&W photo, and more. Combine photos of different exposures into one HDR shot. Brighten shadowy areas with Nikon's innovative Active D-Lighting, including a new Subject-based Active D-Lighting that works with moving subjects.
Retouch images
Retouch Menu makes it easy to improve the look of your photos. Soften skin tones, highlight a subject, soften a background, crop, create a color outline and more - all right at your fingertips!
Make a scene
Select from one of the D5500's 16 Scene Modes like Nightscape, Portrait, Close-up, Beach and more and get optimal results in tough situations. Or, get creative and use Scene Modes to add artistic flare to your shots.
