what a wonderful camera for everything

I've been shooting a d5 - mostly for sports - for four years now. seems to be able to shoot 9FPS forever while autofocusing. football, hockey, lacrosse and snow ski images are made so much easier by the camera's speed. the second shutter for vertical is useful. I shoot a lot of football at night and routinely have the camera at 51,200 ISO. once put through Lightroom, the low light capabilities of this camera are unbelievable.

Extremely happy & impressed!

With the exception of the D1, owned every professional D series & by far, simply the BEST professional grade DSLR available for shooting sports, live action or in between. I don’t care very much for video, I shoot stills.shoot video, Solidly built, very intuitive, nearly an extension of your hand. I may seem biased but I don’t see any reason why you’d want to use anything else. Really.

Low Light Excellence!

After switching in October 2018 to Nikon from using Sony/Minolta DSLR system I can honestly say the D5 is the ABSOLUTE LOW LIGHT KING!! I have seen mirrorless cameras come to the market and I have to say I have not seen any photographer to date use their mirrorless full frame cameras like I have the D5. Fantastic imaging at the Lucas Oil Pro Tractor Pull under poor lighting conditions along with tracking and photographing dragon flies in flight. I own two D5's and would not trade them at this point. Image quality is GREAT for what I do. I hope to see a D6!

Excellent camera. Works well in all conditions, and extreme temperatures, both very cold (North Pole and Mount Everest) and very warm (Taklamakan desert). Heavy but reliable and bomb proof.

D5 is Simply Amazing - Refurb Great Bargain

Sold my D5 a few months ago because I was shooting the D850 so much. Then realized I missed the D5 and didn't want to pay full price. Received a great refurb, 360 frames in mint condition.

Low light king

Phenomenal pictures taken at Carlsbad cavern in New Mexico. I set iso on auto while shooting with a AF-S Nikkor 24-70 mm f/2.8 E. ED VR lens. The auto focus was great and locked onto most everything I wanted pics of. There isn’t much light in the cave but the D5 captured pictures that are simply amazing. The most amazing thing with this camera was pictures taken on a rock outcrop in Texas. I was at a national park looking for the drawings left by native Americans from many years ago. I could not see the drawings with my naked eye so I decided to take pictures where the drawings were supposed to be. After downloading to my computer I was able to see the artwork in stunning detail. In my opinion the D5 is truly an amazing camera.

Every Day All Day FLAWLESS Portrait Workhorse!

I'm a professional photographer, working seven days a week, normally 8-12 hour days including editing. I don't have time to waste and can't compromise on image quality and need a fast workflow. The settings in the Nikon D5 body are extremely helpful, particularly the ability to remove warm tone from images. In the past, that was a workflow time sucker. The D5 has 3 - settings dealing with color tone and there are more which are available for what you do most. for me, that's portraiture. In-camera, I can set it for portrait tone which evens out skin tones and keeps them realistic before I get into post-production. The D5 is a beast and the battery lasts all day long without swapping out. Even when going heavy on the video grabs, I've never had the battery go below 55% I sent the body in to NPS for repair of the gui glass which I cracked. I also had a temporary problem with the card door sticking and not wanting to open. Nikon fixed that at no charge and had it back in less than a week. Comfort in the hand is perfect for all day shooters like me. It is a little tricky at first when you go back and forth between the D5, D4s, and D4, they re-arranged some of the controls which threw me for a loop at first, but I'm good now. ISO, in particular, has found a new place with the D5. I recommend the Nikon D5 for any kind of photography, it has the speed for sports or equestrian events in my case, and the extreme low-light capabilities I need when finding myself not being able to use flash in low light settings! No reservations at all about endorsing this body, rugged good looks and top-notch performer each and every time.

D5

I don't like where the iso adjustment button is and I don't like that pushing 1/2 way down on the exposure button only locks the focus and not the exposure too. Am I wrong about this?

Excellent choice

I purchased the D5 about a month ago and have a few thousand shots on it.Truthfully, I'm still getting used to it. I'm coming from a D800 (Which is also excellent) because I wanted another tool to cover the higher frame rate and greater low light capability. The frame rate is exceptional and the ability to buffer so many shots is just amazing. I use the XQD and at first I was releasing the trigger because I was expecting the buffer to slow it down but it hasn't happened. My night tests of the noise at different ISO were very impressive across the natural range and extended low. My test did show the highest 3 extended ranges were very poor image quality because of noise. There was nothing scientific about the test. It was just D5 on tripod at night and pointed down the street. (Like someone might have a camera at night). Auto Focus is amazing. For wildlife AF-C and AUTO Area Select is like magic. Obviously some of the functions/features are like the D800. I am still getting used to the many features and options it offers. It was an excellent choice.

Great camera body for action and low light.

I have been using the D5 for about two years. It has been amazing for action sports, air shows, motorsports and any circumstance that requires frame rate or higher ISO. It may not be first choice for pure Wedding photography, but it will still provide incredible images. Very quick and accurate focus choices as well as sensor performance and color. Durable body and reliable.

For the Pro who is into sports and low light photography.

Heavy and bulky camera. Unless you are into sports photography or do a lot of picture taking under los light conditions I would probably go with the D850. A bit overpriced.

No Regrets

Love this camera, have used it to mainly shoot sports lately and does it make a difference. Used the D700 previously to photograph basketball and football; that speed does not even come close to the D5. I bought the XQD card version which was recommended because of its fast writing. Glad I was able to make this purchase

Everything I want from a Nature Wildlife Camera

Had the D3s and D4s and also a D810. The D5 is the D3s but such a huge upgrade in all respects, focus, WB, color, speed, feel. In every aspect it is fantastic. I have fallen in love with my lenses again, images are so clean and sharp. Love this camera

Incredible

I do nature, automotive, and aviation photography and my god there has never been a better camera to do it on. The clearness of each photo, the focus capabilities, and the over-all feel of the camera is like no other. If you have the opportunity to buy this camera do it. It'll change everything for you.

A True Flag-Ship

I have them all from the D2 up.. many have been great, but ive always been left with something i wish was better or found something missing. The D5 IMO is the most complete tool Nikon has produced. I liked my D4. Loved my D4s. But this D5? Brings a smile to my face I didnt know I could have. I shoot sports, so quick focus lock, high (10k) iso capability, great ergonomics are essential. Check, check, check!

Excellent Evolution in Nikon Technology

The new Nikon D5 does not disappoint. It's action focusing, face recognition, increased continuous shutter speed, increased pixel count, and increased light sensitivity make this truly profession DSLR the best on the market. Attached is an un-retouched image taken at 1/250 of a second, f/2, ISO 100, 105mm, center weighted metering, and auto white balance. The skin tones are the best I have ever experienced right out of the camera.

Best Nikon Body I've EVER OWNED

When it comes to the versatility that my day to day photography requires, this body answers every need I have. I never know if I'll be doing video, stills, portraits or fast moving horses. Or, if the lighting will be interior candlelight, or mid-day sun. So I needed a one-stop all-purpose camera body that doesn't produce a GIANT pixel-pregnant image. The D5 is, for me, the perfect combination of pixels to low light performance. The battery lasts all day long without changing, the dual card slot (I went with double CF) has the capacity to allow me to shoot from 10 am to 10 pm without worrying about running out of storage space. I use two 128 gig SanDisk Extreme Pro cards that handle video and stills without choking. This feels great in hand and though I wasn't happy about the buttons being moved around (ISO in particular) I can go seemlessly between this D5 and my D4S bodies without missing a beat, or the shot! Very very happy with this Nikon and it's a rugged piece of image processing equipment that I plan to use for many years to come! I also use the time-lapse feature more than I thougth I would and it's perfect right out of the camera with no additional post production necessary. I definitely recommend it to pros that put high demands on their camera bodies and who don't need enormous images. 20 x 30 is the largest we print and I've never had a request for more. One client did make a full size billboard with one of my images and that looked great, so we're good with this FX sensor at this pixel count. A++ Five Stars, no regrets.

Love the speed, low light & 4K Video!!

Its been a long wait! I made it up through the ranks to own a Nikon F5, back in 1997. Now it sits in the closet! Didn't think I would be able to afford the Nikon body. Amen to wedding photography!!! LOVE MY D5...just getting to know her! Love using it along side my D810! Can't say anything negative, bought the dual XQD version. Love the speed, low light & 4K Video!!

Low Light Delight!

As advertised! I'm able to shoot quality pictures at higher ISO settings than with any of my other Nikon cameras. Additionally, the D 5 always takes the shot when I press the shutter-release button so I no longer miss some great shots because the camera isn't processing fast enough. The D 5 is expensive but my only regret is that I didn't buy this camera sooner.

Just get's it done....

If you need high frame rate, it get's it done. If you need low light/high ISO images, it get's it done. If you need to shoot verticals, it gets it done. If you need to shoot tethered, it gets it done. If you high res without megapixel overkill, it gets it done. If you need to shoot in the rain, it gets it done. If you need a HUGE buffer and lightning fast throughput, it gets it done. If you need fast and accurate autofocus, it get it done. Whatever you need a camera to do, the Nikon D5 get the job done every time.

Truly conquer the dark!

By LysacDang

I got the D5 on the first shipment and with a few thousand shots in variety lighting conditions (most subjects are wildlife). I am happy to say that I am no longer concerned about the ISO when shooting in a not ideal lighting condition. The image of the Great Horned Owl shows what I meant. Usually the Owls shows a "white beard" only when they hood and when they hood it is dark. The photo was taken with D5+600mm+TC1.7, 1/400sec, f/6.7, ISO 102,400.

Quick and Superficial

I worked two D5s fairly hard yesterday (1167 shots), shooting eagles. I do not pretend that I am fully conversant with them yet, the bodies not the eagles. The D5 will not replace the D810 on my 600mm, a perfect marriage normally. I will say my D4s bodies are going away. For wing shooting with a 300 or 200-400 the D5 performed admirably. The D4s is still a great camera, I may keep one as a backup. The D5 is heavy, a good thing, easy to grip with all controls in an ergonomically comfortable l...

Innovation for inspiration.
What determines when Nikon releases a full-frame flagship camera? When technological innovation demands it. Introducing the D5, an FX-format DSLR that makes the impossible possible. Huge advancements in sensor design, autofocus, metering and image processing result in thrilling new capabilities-low light shooting all the way to ISO 102,400 (expandable to an unheard of ISO 3,280,000), precise AF detection and tracking across that entire ISO range, regardless of your subject's speed or direction changes, blazing fast 12 fps continuous shooting, 4K UHD video and, of course, image quality that captures the hearts and minds of your viewers. This is not iteration, friends. This is innovation...spectacular innovation. How will it change the way you shoot?

• New 20.8MP FX-format CMOS image sensor and EXPEED 5 image processing
• Widest native ISO range ever in a Nikon full-frame DSLR: ISO 100 to 102,400 (expandable to Hi-5, ISO 3,280,000)
• Redesigned AF system with a 153 focus points, 99 cross-type sensors and a dedicated processor
• 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) video recording and pro-grade video features
• 12 fps continuous shooting with full AF and AE performance; up to 200 shots in a single burst

Game-changing low light capabilities

Nikon's widest native ISO range ever
The low light performance of the D5 might make it a legend. With Nikon's widest native ISO range (100 to 102,400) and highest expanded range (up to Hi-5 ISO 3,280,000), advancements in noise reduction and color fidelity and a next-generation AF system that performs in near darkness (EV -4), a world of new shooting opportunities has opened. Capture clear, sharp images you may not have attempted before - at night, in dark reception halls, arenas and more. For surveillance and security applications, this expanded ISO range means getting a shot others can't see without a flash.

EXPEED 5, Nikon's most powerful processor ever

Masterful image quality
The sheer imaging power of the D5 is exhilarating. With its Nikon developed 20.8MP FX-format CMOS sensor, the D5 is the highest resolution full-frame Nikon flagship ever and ready for your next challenge. Nikon's superior image processor has been updated to EXPEED 5 to harness the power of this remarkable new sensor, and a second processor has been added just for autofocus. All of the exquisite detail and textures, vibrant colors and rich tonality delivered by NIKKOR lenses is captured in flawless precision, even in extreme low light. Create images that move people.

Stay on top of your game

The speed to capture decisive moments
When you hear the D5 shooting at full speed - 12 fps with fulltime AF and AE, 14 fps with fixed focus and AE with mirror up - you know the game has changed. For the first time in a Nikon DSLR, a second processor is dedicated solely to autofocus operation and computing. A new shutter and mirror sequencing mechanism nearly eliminates blackout time and mirror slap for bright, consistent views during high-speed capture. EXPEED 5 and a high performance buffer handle up 200 NEF (RAW) and/or Large JPEG images during one high-speed burst - enough to cover an entire 100m sprint without taking your finger off the shutter release button. The new 180K RGB Advanced Scene Recognition System pulls it all together and ensures every shot has optimal exposure.

Capture images that defy the odds

Nikon's fastest, most accurate AF system yet
The D5 ushers in a new era of autofocus with the Multi-CAM 20K AF sensor module. It uses 153 focus points with 99 - yes 99 - cross-type sensors and a fully dedicated AF processor, and it works in near darkness (EV -4). Small subjects moving at high speed, even in low light, can be tracked with remarkable precision. The system is configurable in 153-, 72- and 25-point coverage when used with Continuous AF. All 153 points are compatible with AF NIKKOR lenses f/5.6 or faster, and 15 central points work with an effective aperture of f/8. Whether you're shooting a high-speed race or A-listers on the red carpet, the D5 has you covered.

Moviemaking flexibility

4K UHD video in light others wouldn't dare
For the first time in a full-frame Nikon DSLR, record 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) video with dot-by-dot readout for maximum image quality. Capture 3840 x 2160 at 30/25/24p with an angle of view approx. 1.5x lens focal length, or record Full HD 1080 video at 60/30/24p. Shoot stunning 4K UHD Time-lapse, right in camera. Auto ISO handles smooth lighting transitions from ISO 200 to the sensitivity of your choice (all the way up to Hi-5). Enjoy all the professional video capabilities of D4S and D810 - simultaneous external and internal recording, Flat Picture Control, Zebra Stripes, a built-in stereo microphone with 20-step increment adjustments and so much more. Combine the D5's low light capabilities and the versatility of NIKKOR lenses, and your next video project is bound to be acclaimed.

A smooth operator
Incorporating feedback from the field, the D5 is engineered to reduce the stress factors of shooting all day. Improved ergonomics and an expanded illuminated button layout put key controls at your fingertips. A high resolution XGA Touchscreen LCD with a smartphone-like interface makes it easy to select AF points or Spot White Balance in Live View, swipe through shots, pinch to zoom, edit file names and more. New double XQD card slots* easily handle the camera's incredible burst shooting capacity and keep the buffer cleared. All of this in a light and durable magnesium-alloy body with extensive weather sealing.
* A new modular design for memory lets you select a model with either dual XQD slots or dual high-speed CF slots.

Change your perspective - The D5 uses the versatile "F" lens mount that pros and advanced shooters have come to rely on. Use your prized NIKKOR glass to bring out the absolute best in your photos and videos. Pair the high speed of the D5 with a NIKKOR lens equipped with SPORT VR mode, like AF-S NIKKOR 500mm or 600mm f/4E, and experience unprecedented smoothness and precision. SPORT VR mode delivers a stable viewfinder image when tracking high-speed movement; even subjects moving quickly and unpredictably can be captured in stunning detail.

Ready for the future of creative lighting - The D5 is the first Nikon full-frame DSLR to incorporate control for its new radio controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting system. With the optional WR-A10 (Wireless Remote Adapter) and WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller (transceiver), the D5 can control and fire up to six groups of SB-5000 Speedlights around obstacles, corners, in bright sunlight - even in another room - up to 98 feet away. Access control right from the D5's menu and shine light on yet more shooting opportunities. Of course, the D5 is also fully compatible with SB-910, SB-800 and SB-700 series Speedlights.

Streamlined workflow - Shoot more and wait less with the D5's ultrafast communication system, which performs over 1.5 times faster than D4S. Transfer files over LAN at blazing speeds: approx. 400 mbps wired and 130 mbps wirelessly with the new optional WT-6A Wireless Transmitter, which supports the IEEE802.11ac standard and extends connectivity distance to 656 ft. For even faster performance, shoot in two smaller RAW sizes: RAW size S (12 bit, uncompressed) and RAW size M, both of which maintain exceptional sharpness and detail.

XQD or Compact Flash memory? Your choice. - The D5 lets you select your preference - dual XQD card slots or dual Compact Flash slots. The XQD format is designed to take advantage of the speed that the D5 can offer photographers. For instance, the Nikon D5 can shoot at 12 frames per second and can record up to 200 NEF (RAW) and/or Large JPEG images during one high-speed burst. For photographers shooting sports, action and other fast paced events or 4K UHD video, it is vital to have a media card format that can keep up with the camera. XQD is the solution.
