Best Camera for the Price. I have always had Nikon and Love there cameras, they are reliable, comfortable, and affordable! I ill always recommend any nikon camera especially the D800.

Ive been shooting with a D80 for 11 years now. I recently bought a used D800 to finally replace my trusty old d80. I have to say, the jump into full frame is mind blowing! I never used to exceed ISO 400 because anything over 400 had too much noise for me. but with the FX format, its a different story! ISO 2000+ looks peefectly fine. I mainly shoot products and have been struggling with capturing details on my old D80. the D800 definitely stepped up my game. It has all the functions I need and none that I don't. P.S. Live view is a bit jittery when focusing. but I hardly use it anyway. So 5 stars overall still.

This camera is obviously not going to make everyone happy. With that said I think photographers should study what a camera is capable of, its intended purpose and of course the feel in your hands. This camera seemed to be overshadowed by its predecessors the 800E and 810 but when I held it for the first time I knew it was the right fir. Taking it out in the field is fantastic for me because its size and weight are compact and light enough for hiking and sessions. The photographs are beautiful and the file sizes have never been an issue for me. If you have research this camera you know very well its a power house packed in a beautifully created package. I dont see me trading up on this camera anytime in the near future. I use it primarily with the 58mm, 28mm and 85mm F1/4 and the amazing Nikkor 180mm F2/8. Dont overlook at least giving this exceptional camera a try.

good camera but I ran into issues shortly after purchasing. The viewfinder is dark when using lenses f4 and up. Which i think is something Nikon should have fixed. Lenses that are f2.8 and wider seem to be fine. I can't use my 16-35mm f4 nikkor lens because the viewfinder is so dark indoors. The shutter is really loud! Shooting stills in live view is even a worse sounding shutter. I would like a d810 instead because of all these issues. I'm thinking of switching camera companies because of the issues I found with this camera. And focus is hit or miss

I bought this camera as an upgrade. I have had focusing issues, ISO grain issues, color balance issues. The camera stays on after it's been turned off, the camera will stop taking pictures during the middle of a shoot like it's overheated and needs a break. I have missed shots at events because of this and there has been nothing done on Nikon's part to correct the issue. I now have a camera that is worth about $1500 in resale after I spent $3000 on it. I also just found out that Nikon sent out a "Free Maintenance Service Initiative" to several D800 users....I feel ALL D800 users should have been offered a full refund or credit towards a new camera...if not given the new D810 as a trade...I am thoroughly disappointed in NIKON's D800 and feel they could have made a better decision as far as customer service goes. I plan to purchase the D4S and am crossing my fingers that I don't have any further issues. Nikon has been my go to for 6 years and the D800 is just a huge let down.

The high resolution sensor, familiar controls, astonishing dynamic range and image quality make me a happy D800 user. In fact, the D800/e could have been the best DSLR that Nikon had ever made... if it weren't for the build quality and QA issues that have plagued this wonderful camera. If it had been as solid as the D700, I would give the camera 5 stars. However, the left-side autofocus problems, external flashes not being triggered in commander mode, the failing 10-pin connector, the body finish (to name the most common and well-known issues) have happened to too many users. After long discussions with the US support to get my 10-pin connector fixed out of warranty, I just hope that nothing else on my D800 will break. When buying a camera in this price range, I have higher expectations on both the build quality and service. Users deserve being taken serious by Nikon, and not for granted.

I've been doing photography for 30+ years and have always shot with a Nikon. I purchased a D70 when it 1st came out and it was a nice camera but the resolution was not up to par with 35mm film cameras. When the 36 Megapixel D800 came out I knew I had to have one and I was not disappointed! This is a solid camera built like a rock and packed full of features any enthusiast or professional would love! The resolution of the D800 is just astounding - images even with Nikon's kit lenses are stunningly sharp and the color is clean and accurate. I highly recommend the D800 to anyone who wants near medium format quality in a 35mm package. I've included 2 images from the Rolex Watch Technicum building in Lititz, PA with one image showing just a crop on the door - you can actually see the Christmas Tree inside! The lens used was the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR shot at ISO 100 at F11 for 15 seconds at 24MM.

First of all, I would like to give this camera a rating of 4-1/2 stars. If you own and would like to use a lot of old manual focus AI and mirror lenses, this camera will do it. I have 50+ years of photography experience but am a very recent convert from manual film cameras. I still use my first Nikon F from 1967 and was extremely concerned about how well a digital camera would work with my extensive collection of manual focus Nikkor lenses. I am retired, on fixed income, and a whole new set of lenses is NOT in the future for me. Borrowed a D800 a couple times and tried it with a number of my favorite old manual focus AI and mirror lenses and was extremely pleased to discover that they were beautifully compatible. Just returned from a trip to Italy with the D800 and 5 AI Nikkor lenses and was totally satisfied with how well they worked together. LIKES: Very pleased to find the ground glass focusing to be about as accurate as the electronic range-finder, despite my failing eyes. Electronic range-finder works well with ALL of my f5.6 or faster old lenses and especially with all of my fast AI Nikkors (55f1.2, 24f2, 28f2, 35f1.4, 105f1.8, 135f2). Live-view focusing is a terrific feature with really big, slow telephoto lenses. Love the spot-meter feature. Love the ability to quickly change the ISO. Love the built-in diopter correction for the viewfinder. Image quality is superb. My DISLIKES: I find digital camera bodies to be very NON-intuitive (compared to manual film cameras) and thus slower and more difficult to use. Perhaps I should buy a Df. Part of what I mean by this is a digital camera requires the use of your eyes to make most or all settings. A manual camera like an F3 allows you to set the camera "blind" by using just feel. That is easier and quicker IMO when you learn the controls. I find the matrix-metering (when used with the one AF lens I own), to be less reliable than knowing how to make a proper exposure. I use the spot-meter feature, manual mode, my decades of experience, and nail every exposure every time, no question. Works great. Need more "Non-CPU lens" data entry spaces. Space for just 9 lenses is not nearly enough. It cannot even cover all the various Nikkor maximum lens apertures, let alone focal lengths. No aperture direct read-out of an AI lens like an F2 or F3 body. Mirror-up operation requires a special remote release. Will have to order one. Self-timer is not self-cancelling after one shot, requires visual setting instead of tactile. No mirror-up operation for my 7.5mm fisheye-Nikkor. No use for a built-in flash on a camera of this sophistication. Too many bells and whistles clutter up the camera controls.

I have been shooting with this camera for a little over a year and am very happy with its characteristics. Excellent low light shooting and incredible detail. I have used it all over the world shooting wildlife as well as landscapes and people. I have added it to my D3x when traveling and especially like it on days that I don't want to carry around the weight of the D3x. Both of these cameras perform especially well when paired with high end Nikon lenses. The picture of the owl shown was shot at 8:00 in the evening with the D800, a 200-400 f4.0 lens, at 1600 ISO. Amazing color and clarity. Well worth the money.

I went from a D3200 to the D800 and found it easy to learn. I use it with a Nikon 500mm F/4 super telephoto lens and love it. It recently developed a focusing issue and is currently in the shop at Nikon, forcing me to use my D7100. There is night and day difference in the two cameras, even though the D7100 is an excellent camera. My wish and advice for Nikon is to improve this camera by removing the ability to do video and concentrate all the electronics and image processing for still photos and maybe to increase the ability to shoot and focus a bit faster. I have never done a video with the camera and have no intention of doing one. I love outdoor photography and the resolution of this sensor is outstanding. The new D810 just looks like a D800 E to me with a different number. Make a camera for just still photography for us die hard camera buffs!

Using the D800 both in the studio and in the field and its does everything I want. The dual card storage is a great feature, very quick changing ISO's and the interface is simple to use. I've been more than happy using it, not to mention the incredible resolution of the images. This is definitely the top of its class.

I have decided to leave Nikon. Quality problems and Nikon's refusal to take video seriously. The D800 is an OK camera. There is really nothing special about it. I honestly think the Canon 6D is a better camera than this and its cheaper.

D800 with Nikkor lens 24mm f1.4 can NOT auto-focus through the view finder, even if AF fine-tune is turned on and adjusted +/-. I did the tests on a tripod with 10sec timer to eliminate shaking and tried focus at center, left edge and right edge. The live-view mode always has greater auto-focus than the view finder. However, taking pictures in live mode is way slower than that through view finder. In live mode, the camera takes 10 to 15 sec to rest between pictures. Plus, it drains battery fast!!! It's frustrating this expensive camera does not deliver its performance.

A little background, I came here from a d5000 then a d7000 and now a d800, have been doing photography as a passion and as a profession for around 6 years. What to use it for: products, weddings, landscape, fashion, All around shooter for people who "KNOW" how to handle the beast. Or the learning curve will be steep and you might get disappointed quickly. What NOT to use it for: Pro Sports shooting or very fast paced action! (only for the modest burst rate) Let me break down the points; IQ: Superb. Enough said! The Image quality of this camera is quite amazing, it is extremely sharp, if you know how to use the tool and have good glass (not amazing, but good enough). Extremely useful (36 MP!!!!) for cropping or recomposing after fact and printing HUGE. ISO: Not very impressive, but in relation to the MP count and signal to noise ratios, it is well kept under control, The 6d and 5d 3 are way better even around ISO 800, but you sacrifice a lot in return. AF: auto focus system is quite amazing especially when in DX mode, as it covers mostly the entire frame! I haven't used it in complex situations much, but it sometimes lags in dim light, and that is to be expected to some extent. It also depends on the lens used for focusing speed. Battery performance: Not amazing, but adequate to my needs. Something you won't find out the easy way, the battery drains REALLY quick when plugged into the USB Port. This is apparently because the Camera stays ON the whole time it is connected, you could almost see the percentage falling . Nikon could easily work out a firmware update to fix such an issue I believe. Ruggedness: Very well built and sealed in a good manner, but nothing is perfect of course, on a fashion desert shoot the camera took quite a beating but the sensor also gained a few spots as well! Viewfinder/eye piece: bright, well placed, but not 100% comfortable to use, could be pumped out a little to help getting a more comfortable nose posture. What I like/ love: MP for large (I mean LARGE) prints, Dynamic Range, fine tuning control, Quality at low ISO. What could be better (personal preference): Controls layout (especially ISO button and Focus control), ergonomics, and ISO, Skin tones and colour reproduction is a little off for my taste, I prefer Canon's warmer skin tones, but Nikon's richer Dynamic range. What I dislike/ hate: Sensor was defective on my first unite (a complete vertical line of dead pixels), QA at Nikon is REALLY getting sloppy, if I face another issue like this with a Nikon product, I'm switching brands. Reliability is a MUST have when buying tools for business. I returned the unit and reseller will exchange it after inspection and after wasting a week of my time. How could this unite get out of the factory is beyond me! A unite aimed at hard enthusiasts to say the least should be inspected further in my humble opinion. Rating: 5 Stars for the very good balance between sensor size, Pixel count and Image Quality at this price range. The tool should not be punished for human mistakes at QA, should it?! ******Check your Camera and test it in in the Shop before you buy it.****** **A request for Nikon, PLEASE give us a firmware/ tool to do remapping of the sensor's dead pixels. So we don't have to SEND it to in or back to the store just to fix a couple of dead spots!**

I have the habit of buying things as soon as they are released. Had F4,D70,D700, before I heard about D800. Was too excited and couldn't wait to own one. Got it last year and put to use. Compared to D700 was a little tough to master initially but after I got the hang of it, never looked back. The output of this camera is amazing. Great detail and colour rendition. Always use it without flash with very satisfying low light results. It is truly Nikon's masterpiece. My advice to new users is to try better Nikkor lenses (My most favourite is 70-200mm f 2.8 VRII) ,and see the results on a good high definition computer monitor to really enjoy the potential of this great camera.

was very excited about the camera, bought it when it first came out, always had a focus issue. it was fixed with my eye piece, than the camera would"t power up, sent it in for that and focus check, they replaced mother board ,ill be sending it back for the focusing issue again. i did like nikon very much before this camera. i have f4 d2x d300, d700 d800, not to mention 25,000 in lenses.service is often slow and rude. i hate to switch to canon but i am thinking about it. i guess how my 3rd repair experience will decide

I have been a Nikon user since the Nikon F in the late 60's. This is my go to camera and has great versatility. In low light, control your breathing and increase ISO. It will handle all the lighting and action shots. I carry multiple cards and external drives as it does produce large RAW images so you need an efficient work flow process. I highly recommend this camera.

By far the BEST camera on the market! This camera meets 95% of my needs and expectations. I demand a large ergonomic body like that of the D2, D3, and D4. Together with the MB-D12 handgrip, my expectations are fully satisfied and met. The cameras focusing system is always tack sharp and flawless. It quickly and accurately focuses in very dim and poor lighting. 99% of my images are shot with some kind of strobe lighting. I needed a camera that was a mix between the D3x and D700, and the D800 has nicely delivered the performance of these two cameras. It yields the image QUALITY of the D3x, high ISO low noise capabilities of the D700, in a camera that is just impossible to beat! At ISO 6400 one can easily use the camera for a wedding! Using fast large aperture lenses the D800 is usable in ANY lighting situation! It boasts the highest dynamic range of any camera, giving it incredible contrast and detail in the shadows. Overall, this camera is by far the best camera on the market.
