Out Standing DSLR

Easy to Navigate the menu, Great ISO and Shutter release and when using manual mode you can set auto ISO. Takes great Landscape and Sport Pictures. Lighting fast shutter speed for Racing pictures. I would recommend this camera to any Sony or Canon person. The D850 is a hard to beat Full Frame DSLR

Wedding Photographer In Love with the D850

Wow!!! Is all I can say. I already owned the 810's which I will still hang on to because they are gorgeous also. d850's clarity and low light photo ability has just made already amazing Wedding photos pop even more. I use these cameras several times a week between Weddings and Family sessions and Engagements. It is a work Horse and so many cool new features. the touch screen lets me show my clients in an instant how they look. All my clients have been amazed by it.

IT's a beast of a camera!

Changed form the D800 ( which I plan on keeping as my second body) and spent two weeks with it this past month in France. There is definitely a learning curve and if you are planning on getting it, I urge to buy Thom Hogan's eBook-it's very detailed (this is my third Hogan eBook) but very worth the time to study it. The camera is amazing in so many ways but what impressed me the most is the sensor's ability to perfectly capture underexposed shots. The detail is amazing. It offers really fast continuous shooting, ridiculous shutter speeds and ISOs off charts. I shoot in manual mode mostly and found it to be very friendly and easy to control. I was debating about the mirrorless camera but I am very happy with my decision to go with the D850 for many reasons. Probably the best digital SLR ever made, to date.

D850 with Filmmakers Kit

This is a great camera and a very good selection and quality of lens for a kit bundle. I haven't tried everything in the kit but the camera and lens and I'm very pleased with that so far. A pretty easy camera but enough features and ability that I don't think I will ever out grow this setup, just acquire additional lens as needed and will be able to fully immerse into whatever interest of the photography spectrum you desire. I have waited years for a camera like this and I'm glad I did.

Incredible camera

I absolutely love this camera. It is probably (in my opinion) the most capable DSLR camera out there. Its lowlight performance is outstanding, great for night photography. It also is great for sports photography. Wish it came with 9 fps, but 7 is not bad. You can always get the grip and the D5 battery for it. It is a heavy camera, which is one of the downsides, but it comes with a lot of perks. Its multiple exposure mode is very impressive and the ability to shoot in low light handheld is incredible. I have owned this camera since March of 2018 and have had no complaints. Absolutely amazing for anything that you need it for. Defeats Canon's 5D MKIV, Sony's A7R3.

The Best of the Best

I have had this camera for little over a month. I have been doing photography for over 60 years. at this point I am a semi-pro. I have owned Nikon s since I was in college. I have also used 2 1/4 cameras in my past. This camera can do all that and still more. Perfection in photography.

Excellent Camera with a Couple of Design Misses

Before you read this review, please know that I am very pleased with my D850. I am happy to have it, and I am using it more and more, especially in extreme lighting situations. I sincerely believe, however, that it is important that reviews be objective, and that they consider shortcomings in design or execution, even if those shortcomings are only perceived and related to the way that I work to do photography. Almost every review of this camera that I have read over the past year has failed to point out what I feel are some obvious design misses that make a real difference (at least to me) in its use. With all that in mind, here goes: The D850 is a really nice camera. It has good balance and feel...my right thumb fits the back of this body better than any other that I have owned. It seems to be a little bit thinner front-to-back than my D810, but to me, the D810 still has an overall nicer feel, some of which I attribute to its all metal body and overall dimensions. Any weight reduction resulting from the switch to the hybrid body is negligible. Still to be seen is how the new design holds up under use and over time. I appreciate the addition of lighted buttons on the rear of the body, but to me, this is a job that was only half done. Unfortunately, the really important controls on the right side of the body, some of which have been significantly relocated, are still dark. And these are the controls that are actually likely to be accessed while shooting. I do night sky and other extremely low light shooting, and since critical controls have been moved from their location on the D810, the D850 will not become my primary body for these situations for some time to come. Swapping the Mode and ISO buttons was, from my perspective, a really bad idea. I am perhaps different from many other photographers in that I do not change ISO "on the fly." Choice of ISO to me is a fundamental decision which affects the character of resulting photographs...it is not simply an exposure decision. (I never, ever use Auto ISO.) I do, however, change metering modes in the midst of shooting. This is a change that could have been made with the introduction of a completely new model line, not a new body that I expect to use alongside my D810. The new joystick puzzles me. This is perhaps because I do not use the D850 to capture video. The only use I have found for it is to use the pushbutton to activate the viewfinder artificial horizon. Similarly, the new F2 button is nice to have. Unfortunately the range of choices to assign a function to this button is too limited. I'm using it to directly access "My Menu," but there are a number of functions which would be more useful if available (see the next comment). I am very disappointed in the elimination of the AE Lock button from its historical spot near the viewfinder. No one else may use this button, but I use it all the time, and its removal is another prime reason that the D810 will continue for now to be my primary body. In fact, it seems to me that with the extremely large number of available autofocus points, the AE Lock button is perhaps more useful than the AF lock button when recomposing images. According to the manual, the old AE Lock function can be programmed elsewhere, but all those other buttons are less accessible, and I have not found the functionality to be actually the same when I do assign it. Finally, even though I am very careful with my photographic equipment (my D200 purchased in 2006 still looks and works almost like new), I miss the ability to install a polycarbonate protector over the rear monitor. I do not currently use the touch screen functionality, nor do I tilt the screen, and would much prefer the ability to install a non-contact cover over the screen. I do have a direct-contact glass protector installed, but it is not going to be as effective in protecting against an accidental impact in the dark. The design of the top hinges and the groove along the bottom would appear to support the addition of such a protector, but that may not be true, and in any case, none seem to be available. In general, it appears to me that the designers have tried to squeeze too much into a limited space. Addition of enhanced video capability and features seem to have come at some expense to established still photography layout and functionality. So in summary, I am happy to have the D850 as a second body. I will recommend it to others, while pointing out what I believe are shortcomings. It will not replace my D810 as my primary camera, at least for now. And it is not for sale...I will keep it. I do wish that I had been able to read a more objective review, especially since it was not available for hands-on inspection before purchase, even currently. But be aware that some of the advances have come at fairly significant cost and consider carefully before you decide.

Wonderful decision

Amazing! My eyes are getting worse and I have difficulty focusing in video live view. Not only is the camera phenonemal having the Atomis has made all the difference.

Awesome camera!

I have owned Nikons for over 50 years -- film-based, on a copy-stand, underwater, and several digital cameras. Each one seems to have been an incremental improvement over the previous one. But moving from the D610 to the D850 was a massive quantum leap (that's a good thing!). It still amazes me after all these years how much computing power in addition to optical excellence can be packed into such a small space. The camera felt immediately familiar and comfortable even as I began to explore all the new features, new concepts. I had high expectations waiting patiently for the D850 to arrive. Those expectations have been exceeded!

A life time Nikon shooter here…

A life time Nikon shooter here… After 47 years as a full time photographer I have retired from the daily grind to a slower relax grind. I started my career with a twin lens reflex Rollie camera and 120-220 film in 1969. I’ve owned and used most Nikon DSLR’s since the start of digital photography. I recall the D2H as one of the best at that time… Nikon you’ve come a long way baby! I never own a D4 or D5 series…most everything else. My D3s is still a great camera. I just sold it, :-( . My D800 was great so I thought I quit buying at that point. Now after owning a D810 for years I purchased a D500 with a 200-500mm for fun stuff… kids playing sports wildlife etc… Then they came out with the D850…. a no brainer! So I’m a one month onwer of a D850 and I can’t put it down. I’m still learning it’s many functions and features. Go Nikon! Finally at the end of my photo career they made the best… better late then never for me. I’m just jealous that you younger shooters have so much to look forward to! PS. Having used battery grips for my all my cameras in the past I opted out this time on my D850…. feels naked. Let’s see how long before I put a jacket on. Love it. dw

Great Camera

I went from the d610 to the d850. The detail in the d850 is outstanding. Used the camera in a low light situation and found the continuous focus to work great. The recovery detail in the highlights in bright sun was surprising. Only problem I found was in video mode, focus tracking didn't stay on focus.

Best Nikon DLR I Ever Shot With

I have been shooting with Nikon gear for longer then I can remember and the D850 earns the top spot when I go back and compare the images to other Nikon DLRs I shot with down to the D100. I came from the film world. This camera is very sophisticated and I shoot with other camera's from Sony & Canon but this camera is it.

My D850

This was my Christmas present to myself. I like my camera but because of how sensitive it is I have had to relearn how to take a photo I used to steady my camera by bracing it to my body. I invested in professional light weight tripod and a monopod. I love my D850 full frame is the way to go.

It's just fantastic, I love it, a photographic team from another level.

I have a D800 and it is fantastic, now with the new D850 it is another camera level, its speed and the sharpness in the shot is incredible, with it I feel almost almost a mantis shrimp (for me, the living being, of better vision in the planet). and I'm still in the reading phase of the manual and testing its functions to see its capabilities, very good Nikon work.

Wow!

Wow! First test with the video at ISO 800, low light source, and absolutely zero noise. Hands down just beats my D810 and most other cameras I have used. All the other bits are top notch as well.

Extreme resolution meets extreme speed
When Nikon introduced the D800 and D800E, it set a new benchmark for DSLR image quality and super high resolution photography that approached medium format. Now, five years later, Nikon proudly introduces the next evolution in high resolution DSLRs, a camera that allows photographers to capture fast action in 45.7 megapixels of brilliant resolution. With remarkable advancements across the board-sensor design, autofocus, dynamic range, sensitivity, Speedlight control, battery life, shutter and mirror drive mechanisms, Silent Photography in Live-View mode, focus shift capability and more-this is quite possibly the most impressive, well-rounded DSLR yet.

Higher Resolution. Faster Speed. Greater Versatility
Nikon's first back-side illuminated (BSI) full-frame sensor with no optical low-pass filter
At the heart of the D850 is a Nikon designed sensor like none before it-a back-side illuminated (BSI) FX-format full-frame CMOS image sensor with 45.7 megapixels and no optical low-pass filter. A marvel of ingenuity, it achieves extraordinary image quality, enhanced light gathering efficiency, faster data readout and truer color. And with such a dense array of pixels, there's virtually no risk of moire.

Faster, richer, sharper processing
Faster than EXPEED 4, EXPEED 5 quickly processes all 45.7 megapixels of data for lower noise, wider dynamic range, subtle tonal and textural details, high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 9 fps and full-frame 4K UHD movie recording.

Sensitive to every little detail
The lower the ISO, the greater the dynamic range. Like the D810 before it, the D850 has the lowest base ISO of any DSLR or mirrorless camera-ISO 64 (expandable down to ISO 32).

Full frame as it was meant to be
Nikon has been advancing the full frame format since the days of 35mm film photography with industry defining optics, legendary sharpness and the most impressive lens lineup available.

NIKKOR Lenses: The Gold Standard
Nikon has been setting the standard for full-frame lenses for over 80 years. Gold Ring Series NIKKOR optics are among the finest lenses available, drawing peak performance from high-resolution image sensors with stunning sharpness, edge-to-edge clarity and virtually no distortion or aberrations regardless of subject, environment or lighting conditions. The extreme resolving power of the D850, whether for stills or 4K UHD video, is brought to full power with these superb optics. To get the most from the D850 think Gold Ring. No adapter needed.

Precision at every turn - Flagship autofocus, metering and fast continuous shooting
Autofocus that keeps up
The D850 uses the same field-proven ultra-accurate AF system as the flagship D5. With 153 focus points, 99 cross-type sensors and a dedicated AF processor, the D850 delivers all of its 45.7 MP performance with NIKKOR lenses. Shoot in low light to -4 EV. Capturing the most elusive subjects will feel like second nature with the D850.

Focus in near darkness
Autofocus down to -4 EV lets you capture in low-light situations. Suddenly, fast NIKKOR primes and zooms can handle even lower light than before.

Greater frame coverage
153 focus points with 99 cross-type sensors-15 of which support f/8, a must for many sports and wildlife shooters-providing 130% more frame coverage than D800/D800E or D810. Acquire and track with unwavering accuracy.

Locked-on subject tracking
Nikon's exclusive AF engine uses parallel processing with a sequence control microcomputer to realize high AF performance for fast-moving subjects even during high-speed shooting.

Nuance in high resolution
With up to 7 FPS at 45.7 MP, the D850 can capture the decisive frame of a bride walking down the aisle or a fashion model's fluid pose. For nailing the shot at a high-speed race or of A-listers on the red carpet, try using the optional MB-D18 battery pack and shoot full resolution up to 9 FPS.

Shoot to your heart's content
Even at 45.7 MP of resolution, the D850 captures up to 51 consecutive shots in 14-bit RAW (NEF) or up to 170 frames in 12-bit lossless compressed RAW (NEF). Hold down the shutter button and capture shot after stunning shot.

Versatile like you - Performance enhancements inspired by photographer feedback
Streamline your workflow
Seamlessly switch between RAW sizes of Large (45.7 MP), Medium (25.6 MP) and Small (11.4 MP) (12-bit lossless compressed RAW), whichever fits your need or workflow. Save time with RAW batch processing right in the camera.

Connect with your vision
Only an SLR camera offers a true view through the lens, making the camera an extension of your vision. The D850 has Nikon's highest magnification optical viewfinder ever, 0.75x.

Do not disturb
When silence is golden-shooting golf, press conferences, weddings and more-turn on Silent Photography in Live View and capture without sound or mechanical vibration. In Mode 1, shoot for up to 6 FPS continuous at 45.7 MP. In Mode 2, shoot approx. 8.6-megapixel pictures in DX image area at approx. 30 FPS for up to 3 seconds.

Tilt and touch
The tilting touchscreen LCD screen makes it easy to get the shot, even from high or low angles. Use Touch AF, Touch Shutter control and navigate menus, playback and more as if you were using a smartphone. Zoom in during Live View shooting and use the new Pinpoint AF to put focus right where you want it.

4K UHD Movie Quality in Full Frame Glory - Cinematic movie recording
A multimedia powerhouse
Multimedia content creators rejoice. You are now free to record 16:9 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) in full frame glory using the total width and resolution of the D850's back-side illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor. Take advantage of the large sensor size for clean output at high ISO and for shooting with zero crop factor with any full-frame NIKKOR lenses, including wide and ultra-wide angle lenses.

Slow it down
Transform dramatic moments into dazzling fluid slow-motion sequences. Record 4x (shoot at 120p, playback at 30/25p) or 5x (shoot at 120p, playback at 24p) slow-motion at 1080p.

Quickly confirm focus
Confirm your manual focus with Focus Peaking. Select high, medium or low sensitivity and red, yellow, blue or white highlights. Operates in manual focus mode with AF or compatible manual NIKKOR lenses.

Touch to focus
While recording video with Live View just touch where you want to focus.

Advanced video features for better movies
Auto ISO handles smooth lighting transitions from ISO 64 to the sensitivity of your choice (all the way up to Hi-2). Enjoy simultaneous external and internal recording, Flat Picture Control, highlight weighted metering, two selectable Zebra Stripes patterns, electronic VR (Full HD), a built-in stereo microphone with 20-step increment and attenuator adjustments and so much more.

Time-lapse in breathtaking resolution - 4K and 8K Ultra HD time-lapse with smooth exposure transitions
4K time-lapse in camera
Create entire 4K UHD time-lapse sequences right in the camera-an exclusive to Nikon DSLRs. Use Silent Live View Mode to bypass the mechanical shutter and mirror movement, saving thousands of shutter cycles and improving the D850's already outstanding battery performance.

8K time-lapse using Interval Timer
Render jaw-dropping 8K time-lapse movies by shooting sequences of up to 9,999 full-size stills, again using Silent Live View Mode. Using the D850's Interval Timer Mode allows you to capture over 8K-size images with exquisite detail for time-lapse movie creation. And with no shutter vibration, your sequences will be tack-sharp.

The most well-rounded Nikon yet - Next-generation features to help you perform at your peak
Light it up
When combined with the optional WR-A10/R10 transceiver (requires firmware version 3.0 or later), the D850 can control and wirelessly fire radio controlled SB-5000 Speedlights from another room, around corners or outdoors in bright sunlight.

Focus stacking made easy
Create images with extraordinary depth of field using Focus Shift Mode. Set focal steps from 1 to 10 for up to 300 automated shots, which get stored in a dedicated folder for easy identification when using 3rd party focus stacking software. High resolution meets high magnification.

Fine tune your NIKKOR lenses
Live View AF Fine Tune lets you quickly and reliably fine-tune the D850's AF system to your specific NIKKOR lenses, optimizing sharpness and avoiding the lengthy process of trial-and-error tuning.

Negative digitizer
Use the D850's 45.7 MP back illuminated sensor and Live View for Stills Mode as a negative film scanner with the new optional ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter Set on a compatible Micro-NIKKOR lens. You can copy slides or negatives one at a time. Digitize the gems from your film days.
