Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is this compatible with uploading photos on Macs and using photoshop? Also, does a lens come with the camera....if so, which one??CHRIS G : Nikon cameras capture image data in their own format, called NEF, which recods the most detail; bought new from a dealer, they ship with converter software so Photoshop can read them. However, you can also set them to capture in TIFF or JPG formats, which Photoshop can import without any need for conversion. It all depends on what you're looking for in terms of detail. Memory cards fill up very quickly using NEF and TIFF formats, but because there are so many data points, your images can be edited much more easily. Because there are more data, if you under or over expose, you can fix them later in software, but if you shoot in JPG format, two things change: you can capture many hundreds or even thousands more images, depending on the size of your memory card, BUT, there are far fewer data in JPG images, making cropping and editing very difficult. Of course, you can work on either a Mac or a PC, since your OS doesn't matter to the camera. You may want to consider another type of editing software, one that is non-destructive. Photoshop makes permanent changes to image files, so you should make a copy first, and never work on an original file. Yes, you can "step back", but only so many times. Lightroom (and Aperture as well, I believe) always work from an internally generated copy, so there's no way to lose the original image data. Also, you won't need a converter for the NEF files with it because it can import them without it. Check the product listing to see if a lens is included or not. It is common to sell these cameras as a "body only", since people who already have a collection of Nikon glass can use what they have. Remember that APC imagers will "zoom" your lens by 50%; a 50mm becomes an effective 75mm on that and any other APC or DX camera. This is great for folks who shoot at long distances, but tough for those who need wide angle shots. Best of luck with your choice. It's a great camera.
Shopper : what can be done when the camera shows there are 1390 photos on the card but when I download to the computer only 936 photos show up ?? The rest are only viewable on the camera but not on the computer???ROY H : Check to see if all the photos are in the same folder. Also, if you have been deleting large numbers of photos from the camera, it's possible that the directory in the card has been corrupted. There are computer programs for your desktop computer which can sometimes unscramble a corrupted directory file, but not always. There are several companies which specialize in retrieving files from corrupted cards. Sometimes the card can be used again, sometimes it will have to be replaced. Also, check if the file type (jpeg. tiff, raw, etc.) of the photos which won't download is compatible with the photo program on your computer. Can't think of anything else right now. Hope this helps.
Mike K : Hi. I have a D90 for some time and have a problem getting clear precise images. Expoaure and saturation is fine but not the sharpness. I have an Olympus E500 (8 meg) and it knocks the socks off the Nikon....why? Any ideas.. I use the Nikon 18-55 and tamron 18-200 lenses. With both i experience the same problem. Incidentally I have been using Nikon equipment for over 40 yearsROBERT P : I have not had this problem. Perhaps you think you are shooting on auto and the dial changed Sent from my iPhoneCHRIS G : Hmm...sounds like you might be having some back focus issues. Is the problem the same with both lenses? I humbly suggest, simply to remove any possibility of user fatigue error, that you do a couple of test shots with a color card or some other high contrast background with the camera on a tripod, and use either an electronic release or a 5-sec timer setting. If the issue persists, perhaps it's time for a fluff and fold from your local authorized Nikon service center on those lenses, or the body itself. If, however, the issue goes away, I'm sure with your long years of experience, you'll figure out the settings to make this little critter work for you. Best of luck, (gNISHANT K : Hard to tell. Your D90 might have focusing issues. If it happens with both lenses, it is not a lens problem.

My work horse

In the current Silicon Age, much what we do with photography ends up viewed on hardly any more than the resolution of a cell phone. Aware of these limits I am more often than not reaching out for my D90 over my 24MP D5200, simply put functionality wins the day and down scaling the D90 is sharper than I need in any case. What I really need is more 100% good shots than 80%, which is something I associate with the 5XXX range have owned two of them. Is there something in that because no reservations about the sensor in the 5200. So what if the whites are 98% as good, the edges never look flat or dull, photos come to life and I get to use all my old primes from film days too. The body I purchased 2nd hand for a fraction of the cost of any D7XXX a mare $126 its previous life was a hard one, so I replaced a few rubbery parts and put it to hard work. Everything in this model is well balanced and really just works well all the time, I think that at the time Nikon could ill afford mistakes and a lot more hard work and research where today they changing models as fast as the next cell phone comes out. I admit that while low light is not the best, it’s not bad at all, the colour of D52xx is better, but I can fix that too. I take flowers, and do my son’s cricket shots grinding the shutter away all in anticipation of the final shot. I have owned D40x, D5000,D5200 Canon G1x ; G5; G15 S100 and in my mind this is still the best for a reliable shot first time round. I have often wondered if the 7XXX is really that much better, but here is no back focus, front focus sorry fine tuning horsing around crying. Not to many millions of focus points just where I need them in the middle. My next camera it’s D500, after someone has beaten it to death, I say “Stay away from a clean 2nd camera it’s faulty!”

Solid Performer

I purchased the D90 new, likely around 2008, and have nothing but excellent success with it. In recent times I discovered that its design does not allow shooting video with an SDXC card, that it can shoot still, but for video, I must keep it to SDHC. Fine, as I carry sufficient cards, and shoot away. I've never taken the ISO to its extreme limits, so cannot speak of noise level compared to newer models. The high speed continuous frame mode has been fast enough to shoot the many auto races I attend. A little cleaning of battery contacts with a quality de-oxidant cleaner/conditioner seems to solve the rare connectivity issues I've seen, but all in all a great camera for my needs. In the event I ever upgrade to a newer model, the D90 will always have a place as an alternate body.

Excelencia

I have had in my power the D90 since 2010, to have been a loyal and loyal partner, of course that over time the auto focus has been wearing away and to shoot high Iso there is a lot of noise but in light conditions suitable for portraits and Landscapes one brings out the best of the camera, as well as resistant because I fell a few times with my lenses of 18-105mm and 55-200 which the latter I have used for portraits. In short I give 5 stars to this companion that I will not forget

An amazing camera that still holds up today

The first DSLR I've had the chance to fully use was a D90 handed down in the family. Despite more than five years passing since its release, the D90 remains a fantastic starting point for beginners. The D90 possesses an ample amount of quality that still holds up a decent amount in comparison to newer cameras. It may not necessarily compare to newer cameras in terms of capabilities, but it remains a stalwart companion in my book that did its job well. I intend to move on to my next DSLR within the next week for something with a bit more quality. I still have to say, though, that I will only have fond memories of this one.

Not a camera problem but possibly lens problem

I too had problem with err messages, but for me the problem was the lens and not the camera. It is a very good entry level camera for new hobbyists.

The first Digital that compares to my F100

I love this camera, and have shot with it for years now. It's the first digital I've worked with that took shops that rival my beloved F100. I've had great success selling my shots even at poster size (18"x30") and the color and detail is fantastic. Battery life is good, the combination of pre-programmed and manual settings allow for a great degree of precision, and it's done right by me.

Like many others, I hit a lemon

The camera itself is good and when it works, it performs very well in both automatic and manual modes. I got amazing shots with a little menu fiddling. So why am I so disapointed. I migrated from Canon to Nikon because someone had told me that Nikon were the most reliable. When we invest in many lens, flash and otehr SLR add ons, it is a commitment. My in-camera flash broke and needed fixing after a month. I had to wait three month for it to get repaired instead of getting a new one. When I did get it back, I started getting the freeze bug everyone is complaining about. Reading everybody's comments, I do not want to try their help desk (tryied everything and I'm still getting freezes) I know if I send it to Nikon, they will keep it forever, charge me some major $$ and return my camera without fixing it. My only question to Nikon, do tehy expect to make long term profits by selling cheap products to their customer and treating them like dirt afterward? My question to the rest of you. What is wrong with us that makes us believe a Sony, pentax or Olympus cannot do better. My only regreat is getting rid of all my great lens.

For the Money, the BEST CAMERA on the market.

I purchased my first Nikon D90 about 2 months ago and sense that time I have taken thousands of pictures. The extreme quality of the pictures plus the outstanding color of same led me to buy another Nikon D90.Also the ability to crop and adjust color and lighting in camera is a huge plus..I never even need the computer and my results are unbelievable.Buy one and I guarantee you will love it.

The Camera I'll Never Forget!

This is the camera that brought me into photography, ever since i fell in love with photography... And of course this camera! However as I get better, there are many frustrated moments with this camera, such as slow focusing, and high noise at high ISO. It's frustrating but I won't blame the camera, 'cause it's technology is kind of old. I guess it's because I got better, and I need to upgrade to a new one. I believe this camera is a perfect one to start with for entry level, specially if you know you'll get really serious into it.

Great Camera!...but small issue

I owned my D90 for 3 years, but recently sold it. The camera was GREAT for awhile. I loved pretty much everything about it and planned to keep it forever. I've taken shots for family gatherings, photo runs in the city, outdoor hikes, travels to foreign countries to include island resorts and mountain backpacking excursions. The only problem that I had was with the dreaded F-- error. This error occurred even before I ever took the camera on my outdoor adventures. I tried cleaning the lens contacts and even used different types of lenses...no fix. The error only occurred a handful of times, but it was enough to where I missed key shots. I know there are D90's out there without this issue and I would love to pick up a used one, but I just can't be sure that the camera isn't affected by this issue.

I've had this camera longer than my wife! I plan to keep them both until I DIE!

I love this camera. I upgraded to this after learning DSLR mistakes with the D40. It's was a breakthrough in the DSLR world being the first to have HD video. I understand that some may find it outdated, but the reality is that nobody would ever guess you were shooting with an older body. Just put a good piece of glass on the end and start shooting. I've taken this camera literally across the world and in different environments. It may not be weather sealed, but it still works like a champ for me. Here are some of the pictures that I've taken with this wonderful camera. Enjoy.

Incredibly Versatile

I chose the D90 over other Nikon bodies because of the versatility that I found with the camera. I appreciate having the LCD on the top of the body as I use this almost exclusively rather than the digital readings on the rear LCD. The camera feels solid and hasn't let me down yet. Autofocus is quick and sharp with any lens I use.

worst purchase of a Nikon I've ever made

It locks up and has since brand new. I was told the SD card was the wrong one, even though I bought it with the camera at a big camera store in Seattle, Wash. So I bought another one still the same results. Nikon help told me to try another card and emailed me the same list that I had in the manual. Again the same blinking err in the view finder. I get that error and then the err and the card error. Tried all the resets, re-formatting the cards. If I take it out of Automatic and put it on the sports setting it seems to work for awhile the the same blinking err error. As this has been an ongoing issue since day one and now out of warranty so it's my dime now. Don't BUY

A great DSLR Camera !

I own this camera since August 2010 and i have only taken 28000 pictures but i must say it performs excellent ! I am an amateur photographer and this was my first DSLR after Konika Dimage Z4, I've learnt everything I know on this camera and never had any sort of problem with it and hopefully I won't have any for further couple of years ! It's a great camera and I think it is amazing how it has "survived" since D7000 came on the market ! You've done it well, Nikon ! Good job ! (Y)

The Only Nikon You'll Ever Need

I had a Nikon D90, which I passed on to my son, thinking, oh, I'll get a newer model. I bought two successive Nikons -- the 3100 and the 5100, plus the Nikon 1 and the Panasonic Lumix -- all to fill the hole in my heart left by the D90. None of them could. Then I saw Adorama offering the D90 at an incredible price, and I jumped on the phone to find out if they had them in stock at the store in New York. They had two, and I said, "I'll be right there, hold one for me." In my mind, the D90 is the perfect camera for the photographer who wants to take great pictures without really knowing all the secrets to taking great pictures. I'm sure if I read the manual and played with all the features, I could take even better pictures than I do, but the point is, I don't have to. I snap, and the D90 does the rest.

Really enjoying this camera

By slm

I upgraded from the D60 to the D90 and am very pleased. This camera does everything I had hoped it would and has room to grow with me as my skills improve. I suspect that this camera will be with me for a long, long time. I don't think I have learned even one third of its features and it is already taking crisp well lit pictures. I added an auxillary flash and the pictures got even better.

Better than perfection

My D90 is a joy to use. It's ergonomics are intuitive and all Nikon. The camera itself is a work of art and its ability to use my 25 year old lenses as well as my new ones is a reflection of conscientious engineering. I use my camera hard and in poor conditons and it gets banged around quite a bit. Despite this it keeps working without a hitch. The only problem I have is deciding which pictures are the keepers. Also the metering system and the Speedlight flashes have the uncanny ability to pi...
