Questions & Answers

Emad A : Does this product come with a battery?JAE THOMAS S : The batteries are not included.
Shopper : Why is this being closed out? What will replace it?ROBERT W : I have no idea other than it is grossly over priced and sales are down...MICHAEL K : I own two...one is on a D810 & THE other is on a D800, I would buy before they are gone?BRUCE P : You'd have to ask Adorama. B&H is still selling it. I think it is probably a mistake.
Shopper : Currently I'm carrying my D810 with a BlackRapid sling that attaches to the tripod socket on the bottom. Does this have a tripod socket? And if so, is the attachment sturdy enough for the camera to be carried with the BlackRapid sling?AL K : Yes it can be attached to the Black rapid strap, and should not be a problem.JAMES T : Tripod Socket? Yes. Strong enough for a Black Rapid (upside down)? Yes I have had no problem. I actually also have a Kirk Quick release L bracket on it as well and that works great. :)KEVIN G : The answer to both of your questions is Yes. Thanks KevinRICHARD W : It would depend on the lens that you have on your D810 , I use a tripod most of the time or long lens that have a tripod collar . If I were to use an attachment such as a Black Rapid , I would attach a safety strap on some sort . I use a Black Rapid on a P700 and it only take a couple of turns to loosen the threads and that could be a disaster . I have a Cotton Carrier system that I use for the DSLR's and it is much more confident inspiring than the BR system . The MB-D12 is very secure , just check it occasionally to be sure it is tight.SKB P : Certainly, I've carried mine for years now by the socket at the base of this grip. I switch between a BlackRapid sling and a Spider holster base plate depending on what I'm doing. Both of which hold the camera from the single attachment point on the grip.ERIK B : Yes and Yes. The MB-D12 does have a very sturdy tripod socket, as secure as the one on the camera itself. It is lined up very close to the one on the camera (adjusted a little forward for balance with the base on it). I take the base off every time I use the camera (D800), but it does secure very well to the camera itself. If you want to leave it attached, check the tightness every time you use the camera. I also use an EP-5b with the EH-5 power supply for studio shots, and USB direct to the PC, so camera shots don't even get saved on the camera.GONZALO V : Yes, it has a tripod socket and will attach a blackrapid conector. Is sturdy and worth paying the extra money for the Nikon original version.JOSEPH K : When this unit is mounted to the body, it is sturdy as it's part of the camera. And yes the bottom of this unit is the same as the camera bottom, you can do the tripod like you do on the camera.ANDREW R : Yes the battery pack has the same tripod screw hole as the camera bottom . It feels sturdy to me, the battery pack screws into the tripod screw hole and then there is a data bridge connection as well. Adding the battery pack changes the profile of the camera from a rectangle to more of a square though. I had a sling strap and I since adding the battery pack I find it more comfortable to carry the camera from the the normal strap attachment points. When I noticed this I considered not using the battery pack but I enjoy holding the camera more with the battery pack than without so I kept it.MARK H : Yes on all counts.

The perfect complement to the D810.

I see a lot of people complaining about the price, and at its original retail, I agree. But I got mine at the "Nikon Store" online at Amazon for $270. The MB-D12 provides another welcome addition and enhancement to the level of performance offered by my D810. It communicates with the camera body to allow vertical shots with front and rear dial command inputs, shutter release button and grants far longer battery life. Like the grip itself, I use actual Nikon brand batteries, En-El15 for best results. I have 6 Nikon DSLR's and every one is equipped with a genuine Nikon battery grip. Guess I am just spoiled that way; but I love them and the feel I get from holding a substantial camera.

Nikon MB-D12 features and functions

Description: The Nikon MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack is a vertical grip for select Nikon cameras including the D800, D800e, and D810. The MB-D12 allows use of several additional power sources for extended run times without interruptions to shooting. The MB-D12 features an extra set of the main camera controls that allows shooting vertical images from a more stable stance and it counterbalances larger lenses. The MB-D12 is compatibile with the Nikon D800, Nikon D800e, Nikon D810, and Nikon D810A camera bodies. The grip can use three different battery holders for a range of extended power options. Using the MS-D12EN Li-ion Rechargeable Battery Holder adds power from one EN-EL15 battery. The MS-D12EN also features a door for a power cable so EN-EL15 shaped AC Adapters can be used instead. Using the MS-D12 AA Battery Holder adds power from eight AA size batteries. The ubiquitous nature of AA batteries and vast range of charging options such as solar chargers makes this capability most valued when shooting in the wild. The BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover is another battery holder option that clips onto the end of a EN-EL18 or EN-EL18a battery (the high capacity batteries used by the Nikon D4, D4s and D5 cameras). The MB-D12 has a set of controls oriented for vertical shooting. The grip features it's own: shutter release button (with button on/off switch), 'AF On' button, front control dial, rear control dial, and multi-select stick. The control orientation allows the photographer to take vertical images with their right arm and hand in a more natural comfortable position (not overhand or underhand). The extra mass of the MB-12 helps resist vibration while also shifting the camera & lens combination center of balance closer to the photographer thus making it easier to hold still. Photographers with larger hands will find the additional grip area a welcome improvement to camera body ergonomics. The MB-D12 is easy to add or remove quickly. All you have to do is remove the connection port cover on the bottom of the camera and screw the grip into the camera's tripod socket. The grip also has built-in storage space for the camera port cover to keep it from getting lost. If you ever use a longer lens handheld the MB-D12 is an especially handy accessory for your D800 or D810. Key Features Vertical grip for Nikon D800, D800e, D810, & D810A bodies Improves ergonomics and handling Vertical shutter release button and controls Multiple power options provide extended camera run time Reduces shots lost due to battery changes Add or remove easily and quickly Improves camera balance especially with long or heavy lenses MS-D12 accepts 1.5V LR-6 (Alkaline), Lithium (FR6), Ni-MH (HR6) or Ni-Mn (ZR6).

Bothersome experience in the long run, before satisfaction could be achieved.

Purchased as refurbished, however it was not working properly. Took it to Nikon iin Melville NY and they had to replace 2 integral parts that were bad. Not a very good bargain when I had to go through the time and effort to get it right. Now it's working fine as it should. Not sure about future purchases from Adorama

This is the first thing to get after...

...you pick up that first high-end Nikon lens. The large battery that it houses is an absolute must if you're shooting for a long time, and don't want to haul around a bunch of in camera batteries.. Ergonomically comfortable... and it looks bad-ass on the 810. The only con, is that it adds more weight to on already heavy rig.

Nice.

This MB-D12 works well to extend the battery time with my D810. The grip fits perfectly, and can do back button focusing, just like the camera. It also make shooting in portrait mode a lot easier.

Good if you need an little bump in speed and battery power

I bought the MB-D12 for both an slight increase in speed and battery power but mainly the latter. The increase in speed may not be fully realized if one is shooting RAW large files that are, like mine, 14-bit. That is because the buffer on the camera may slow the unit due to writing these large files to the memory card(s). It is nice to have the battery power and the Nikon menu sets up which to use first, the camera's or this unit's batteries. When the unit is attached, I usually use the unit's batteries first. Also, you can turn the camera easily with the grip on the unit to shoot in portrait mode if desired. One big disadvantage is the weight of the unit. With the batteries inserted, it is quite weighty and, added to weight of the camera and lens, may be a significant deterrent for use especially if one has to lug it around on the shoulder or neck for an extended period of time.

Snug Fit

I've used third party grips on other camera bodies and they can have some give, making me question the connections, both mechanical and electronic. This grip fits like a glove with no discernible wiggle between the grip and body. Everything functions as advertised. I definitely recommend this grip, especially if you can get it bundled with the body at no extra cost.

You get what you pay for.!

I had passed on this Nikon grip for my D800e because of the hefty price. I bought an off-brand instead. Then, out on a shoot on the coast, I got back to my truck and noticed the battery and the holder had fallen out of the grip. A lady had seen me taking pictures, found it on the beach and me and gave it back to me. I noticed that the latch on the battery compartment on the grip would not lock closed. I ordered the Nikon grip. No more problems. It's pricey but you get what you pay for. No more problems.

Great addition to a D810

The battery grip really improves the ease of use for the D810. It's surprising how much more likely I am to try both horizontal and vertical compositions now that I have full controls from the grip. The build quality is excellent, though I can't say I'd be completely comfortable attaching the camera to a tripod with a heavy lens attached. The price is steep, but I was lucky enough to catch a sale at Adorama, that made it worthwhile.

Mostly a quality product but very poor multi-selector wheel

Grip fits well and is tight. Controls work well, but multi-selector is tiny compared to multi-selector on camera and is very difficult to operate with precision. Locking tab on battery compartment is flimsy and feels like it will break without very careful handling.

Bad quality, lack of service and extremely overpriced

Cons: weak adhesive on rubber grips; weak connection to camera body, a lot of force required to attach firmly and diminish wobbling; huge repair bill with no warranty service period; tiny multi-selector joystick and no separate AE-L button. Bought it for my D800E and later used for my D810 too. Works as expected for about a year. After that rubber grips start to peel off. Most annoyingly, same thing happened with my D800E body in the past, also after about a year from purchase, and exactly the same happened later with my D810 (around year after purchase too). Official service asked $100 to replace rubber grips, because warranty period for accessories is 3 months, which is insane for $600+ product. I refused, of course (yet required to pay $10 for "diagnostics" despite issue was obvious!). On D800E and D810 grips were replaced free of charge (camera body have 2 years warranty period) and without additional charge for diagnostics. For $100 you can buy TWO new third-party grips (and a lot of glue). Another issue is you have to screw it to the camera really hard to get firm connection. Add still, little wobbling remains. It can be tolerated in handheld, but firm connection is essential for me. As I don't want to unscrew battery grip every time I need to use monopod or tripod. Bottom line: I expected much higher quality and service form Nikon. Seems this is just extremely overpriced product with no service nor quality or features behind that price (for $550 price difference compared to 3rd parties we can at least get good adhesive on grips, or features like Wi-Fi and GPS).

Excellent feeling on hand, but need to pay the price of a decent camera body ($749, really?) for a grip. Wondering if Nikon competitors are setting up Nikon price.

Great Product but don't get the price

I bought this battery grip this past July from Adorama for $396 for my new D810. I agree with other postings that the listed price of $616 is way too high. I wouldn't have purchased it at that price. $400 for me was a reach but having owned a grip for my D7000, I knew it was a quality product. That said, i really think the product is great. It fits tightly to the camera body and I like how the D810 fits in my hands now. The controls for portrait shooting are positioned great and work like a charm.

Quality Product for Improved Ergonomics

I have two of these for my Nikon D7000 and D810 cameras. My hands are large for the extra size really helps me get a great grip on my camera. Having the shutter, aperture and shutter controls for use when shooting portrait is very nice. Also, the extra battery power is handy on those long days out shooting. Yes, it is expensive. But, coming from Nikon, its high quality and fits camera bodies like a glove. It also adds a little weight but nothing too bad. I think its great and recommend it. Happy shooting!

Failed after 18 months

I'm an advocate of Nikon gear and have owned several Nikon grips. This is the second Nikon grip I've had with issues however, and the price tag on this one makes it that much more disappointing. First, I wish there was more than just the tripod screw holding it to the camera body. There's more flex between the body and the grip than I'd like to see. I have a high-dollar tripod and ball head and and L-Bracket. The body-grip connection is the weakest link by far. Second, after 18 months the grip has stopped seeing the internal battery. The buttons and dials all still work, but it will no longer draw from the battery in the grip. The battery in the camera body is all I get now. I've seen others report this problem and the repair bill is reported to be $275. OUCH!!! It would be a lot easier to endorse Nikon grips if I hadn't had 2 out of the 3 I've bought new fail shortly out of warranty.

Solid, Pricey

I give this: 5 stars for quality 2 stars for value 4 stars overall Not much to be said except it's Nikon quality, feels very solid, does what it's supposed to do. The vertical grip shutter release button is quite a bit firmer than the body's button, takes some getting used to. Maybe it will soften over time, I don't know. I wanted this to increase the battery life for my time-lapse projects. Had I known about DC couplers, I would have gotten that instead! I already think my D800E is bulky and heavy before I put this on it plus 8 Eneloop Pro batteries. But it does look very "pro," if you're into that. At the gray market price, 4 stars, but if it cost $200, this would be 5 stars overall. The US model I would give 3 stars overall.

Top quality, functionally perfect

Some complain about the price, but the quality is twice as good, in my opinion. Some say there are rattles, but my copy does not. Perhaps they are not inserting the battery until it clicks. This is a first-rate professional piece of equipment. You get what you pay for. Got mine for $350 (open box), by the way.

Original Equip

This is the alloy metal Nikon version. While the other plastic ones may work, I was concerned when using on a tripod and the pressure on the socket. I wanted the real thing. Although I understand the construction may cost more I believe Nikon has priced this rather high.

This made my camera into a dual-personality FX/DX platform the Nikon intended

Yes it's pricey-- retail anyway. I got mine in a distress sale for $250 (BNIB). I needed the quality of the D800 and a more manageable 15.3 MP image size to simplify sharing efforts for my kids sports teams. Pop on my 18-200 and I have 6 FPS available. Put the FX lenses back on and I can shoot FX RAW to my hearts content for more serious work. First Grip... works and feels awesome

By mshooter

This is my first time using a grip. Day 1; don't know how I lived without them. Always thought I didn't need one, because I was strong, and nimble enough to shutter release without too much stability loss. Turns out, I was very mistaken. Much greater stability with the grip in portrait, and easy to switch between portrait and landscape. Don't hear or feel a single rattle in the battery area, as was stated by another reviewer. The shutter button seems very smooth and responsive, and it seems t...

Nikon's MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack for D800 and D810 Cameras is a grip that attaches to the Nikon D800 and D810 cameras. It provides extended battery power with the batteries (not included) in the grip, plus giving you a better, more secure and stable hold on the camera, making it easier to handhold at lower shutter speeds.

Customers choose the Nikon MB-D12 because it allows for faster frames per second when shooting DX. And you can get up to twice as many shots without changing a battery. Other advantages are longer use of the camera (two batteries instead of one), more convenient access to controls in vertical format photos, and faster continuous shutter releases. The MB-D12 has a tripod socket and will attach a blackrapid conector.

The battery pack is supplied with two battery trays - one that holds an EN-EL15 rechargeable battery, and one that holds 8 AA batteries. A holding case, contact cap and user's manual are also included. This power pack accepts 1.5V LR-6 (Alkaline), Lithium (FR6), Ni-MH (HR6) or Ni-Mn (ZR6) batteries.
