I do hummingbird photography with this lens. Autofocus could be faster, but overall for the price it's a good value.

Pretty much what I wanted. I have no problem with sharpness at the extreme end of the zoom, likely because I'm not a professional. It's a bit heavy shooting at angles >75 degrees, but it's absolutely stable, and that balances out the weight. Haven't yet tried it on birds in flight, but got some pretty good shots of a Great Horned owl.

This is a very heavy lens. I was hoping that the high-quality glass and internal image stabilization would make for super-sharp images, but even with a sturdy tripod and shutter delay, the resulting images just didn't look all that much better than my other lighter (and much cheaper) lenses. Don't get me wrong: the images were sharp and very good quality. They just weren't significantly better, enough to justify carrying around such a heavy lens.

Given the relatively low price and weight (compared to alternatives) of this lens, it's a great choice for handheld shots of birds and wildlife. I do sometimes wish for more light, but I'm not going to pay thousands more for a bigger and heavier lens in order to get it. This lens strikes the right balance.

So I currently shoot with an older E-M5 and was not expecting much more quality in my shots, just wanted to get closer then my 75-300 would to the birds and be able to use a teleconverter if needed while shooting from my kayak. Well wow was I shocked when I uploaded the first round of shots the extra focusing and stabilization the lens adds to the shots was clear right away. Cropping photos wasn't losing as much quality just all around an amazing buy and add to the collection. I would say the only down side would be now I want the OM-1....

Lens is paired with the E-M1X. Resolution is incredibly good, IS performs top notch and integrates with camera IS to eliminate all motion in most instances, and the autofocus is fast and accurate. Birds are a focus for me. The focus finds birds in foliage almost without fail. Despite being a telephoto, close focus to near macro distances is possible and good. I rate this lens as fantastic in all aspects.

I bought this primarily for bird and other wildlife shots. Still getting used to this lens but so far very pleased. As a serious amateur I cannot justify the more expensive 300mm fixed or 150-400mm pro glass. With a 1.4x teleconverter I zoom to an equivalent of 1100mm (equivalent 35mm camera) which is about right for shy birds like eagles. My body is an OMD EM1 Mk3.

I acquired this lens with the hope and intention of replacing the venerable Canon RF100-500L lens I had with a R5 Canon FF camera system. I decided to move into the OM-1 and only hoped the performance would be int he ballpark. Well, it IS. I was so pleasantly surprised that the focus speeds and sharpness of this 100-400 lens not only brought the performance to the table but an increased focal range reach as well. I love the build and enjoy the lessened weight burden. Focus speeds are simply wonderfully instant and accurate. At the long end this lens is shockingly sharp and detailed. If you're a birder or sports shooter and don't wish to shell out the $7500 for the big buy this is THE way to go

This is a great lens! Yes it is a drag that it is variable aperture and on the slow side, I have found that shooting above 1000 shutter speed is absolute to make sure the object is sharp, but the IS is good and matches well with my M1mii, Shooting at high shutter speed one needs to increase ISO, but post work can correct this. The lens allows me to reach things that the pro 40-150 could not, and it works great with the MC14 which I don't remove. Yes it is absolutely hand holdable, however I use a monopod. I do wish the lens had a strap for at times being on the monopod by itself when carrying makes me nervous. Photo mostly Scottish Highland athletes, but getting into birds.

I have owned this lens for a month. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some amazing shots in a short period of time. Quick tip. Set the stabilization to lens priority. I have on both my EM-1X and my OM-1. That has given my excellent results.

Excellent lens. I was surprised how much I use it for near subjects like flower blossoms. Zoom action is smooth and consistent. Image quality exceeded my expectations.

I read many reviews before buying and was unsure of the lens quality the high maximum aperture but I've gotta say I'm blown away. The clarity and and quality of the images are really great and the build is outstanding. I've taken it out a couple times now and can't wait to use it again.

This lens is a truly outstanding performer. It is extremely sharp through the zoom range. Tere color rendition is very accurate. The IS is very good when combined with an Olympus body.

Great pics even hand held at 800mm full frame equivalent. My main subjects are butterflies and other insects as well as small vertebrates (lizards, toads) and some perched birds. I docked the lens one star because the zoom mechanism is not smooth and requires quite a bit of force, which makes it very difficult to find a subject at a wider angle and then zoom in for the shot, so I've missed shots because of this design feature. Note: Although I've been a photographer for a few decades, I'm not a professional and don't judge photos by their suitability for professional publication or printing.

I knew I was going to buy this lens once it was launched. The focal length was just what I needed for photographing birds in flight and other wildlife. The lens is quite sharp at all focal lengths and especially if you have good light conditions and shooting with low ISO, the images are tack sharp. I have used it with the MC14 1.4TC attached and I am very happy with the results. Overall it is a great value for a super telephoto zoom lens

Sharp enough to get me the image quality I need and the 800mm equivalent comes at a price I can afford. It takes a while to get used to shooting at 800mm but once you do, you will be quite pleased.

An excellent lens in size, weight and reach for wildlife and birding. Potential to take handheld images in the spur of the moment. Highly recommended for Olympus OMD owners.

This lens is amazing! I've used the Panasonic 100-400 lens the last few years and was never quite happy with the quality of my shots so I decided to get the Olympus. The difference is amazing. My shots are so sharp and crisp. It has really restored my enthusiasm for photography. This is definitely my favorite lens.

I switched from my long standing Lumix Leica 100-400 for this lens to compliment my OM D M1 Mark III and I am so glad I did. Although my Lumix was a pretty sharp lens my "Keep" rate was very low, maybe 1 in 15 using it on my G9 and the auto focus always hunted and no dual IS on my Oly M1 so it made matters worse. When this lens was released I kept reading the great reviews and decided to make the change, This lens is fantastic. Super Sharp, quick accurate auto focus on my M1 Mark III, well balanced, just a pleasure to shoot with. And I can use my Oly Teleconverters for crazy focal lengths. I wound up selling my Lumix one as well as my G9 Body ( upgraded to their S5 Full Frame for my low light work) My only problem now is I have too many keepers with this lens.

Wonderful product, excellent price point, amazing photos! I could not afford to go higher in price nor could I carry around a huge lens, so this one is just perfect for me. I use a tripod often, but can handhold just fine too. The difference from my 40-150mm is amazing and it is just as good as my Meade EXT 80 telescope! Thank you, Olympus!

This is prograde piece of glass that is well built. It is large and heavy compared to other MFT lenses so be aware that if your not used to carrying such a large lens it will take some getting used to. I'm older than I want to admit so hand holding a lens this long is not easy and I'm not sure I will use it much without a tripod. That being said this is a beautiful, high quality lens. I think the tripod collar could be improved. When you loosen it just a little it rotates out of position very easily. So far that is my only complaint but it does it's job well. Overall a very good lens for the price.

Very pleased overall. Auto focus virtually instant. Great bird photos already. Looking forward to traveling with lens to photo birds and other wildlife.

This lens is sharp, great IQ. Can be hand held using higher ISO. Using higher ISO on my OMD Mark II did not affect the quality of the photo. The lens works as advertised. One has to realize it is not a low light lens. Great for birds, wildlife, landscapes and even close ups (semi macro). I used a 1.4 teleconverter and auto focus was quick and IQ still excellent.

The results so far have been been very good. In addition to the 'reach', the close focus is marvelous - will be my go to lens for Butterflies and Dragonflies. The build is surprisingly good for the price and the IS works as advertised. Very happy so far.

Simply loved this lens on my Olympus OMD EM1 MarkII. Fast Focus, hand held operation mostly and tack clear shots of backyard birds. I have no regrets in buying this lens and I recommend it highly for wild life shooting.

The old adage in real estate is location, location, location. For wildlife photography my mantra is glass, glass, glass. What do I mean by that? The most important piece of equipment is a really good lens.
