Questions & Answers

JOE M : Does the stabilization work on a Panasonic body?JONATHAN R : This lens isn’t stabilized. It relies on IBIS - in body image stabilization which resides in the camera body. I use it with both the Olympus E-M1 MKII and the Panasonic GH5. Both of these camera bodies have IBIS, and the lens works great with them. The Panasonic G9 also has this type stabilization built in so would work well with this lens too. Image quality from the lens is fantastic from all bodies with or without stabilization so long as the camera is steady and shutter speed is appropriate.KENT C : I don't have a panasonic body, so there is some uncertainty here. But Olympus in general does image stabilization in the body, not the lens, so it probably won't be as effective on a panasonic camera.DOUGLAS H : Although both Panasonic Lumix and Olympus camera bodies are MFT format, Panasonic cameras obtain its IS (image stabilization) from its lenses, while the IS is built inside the Olympus camera bodies. The Olympus 40-150 ƒ/2.8 relies on Olympus' body-based sensor-shift IS, and doesn't has IS as part of the lens. So, if you use this lens on Lumix cameras such as the GH4 or GH5, you will have no IS possible. There is a small number of Panasonic camera bodies do have IS. An example is the GX8ROGER D : This lens does not have optical image stabilization. You will need a body that has IBIS if stabilization is a necessity. This is a great lens and sharper than any of the Canon or Nikon lenses I’ve used.STEVE D : Depending on which Panny body you have, you should have IS built into the body itself and that would take precedence. If you Panny doesn't have IS built it, the IS in the lens should work. (My experience is only with Oly bodies and lenses. I've not used a Panny lens or Panny body.)JUSTIN S : These lenses don’t have built in stabilization. If your Panasonic body has built in stabilization they will be stabilized in that body. Not all Panasonic bodies have stabilization. Many if not most do not.
Jacob J : When wide open and shooting at 120fps at 360 degrees, does this lens produce decent nighttime or indoor videos?MICHAEL R : Don't know I do very little video
Shopper : Is this lens significantly better in low light in comparison to an f/3.5? Is it significantly worse than an f/1.8 or 1.2?GARY W : It is about a half stop faster than an f/3.5 lens and two stops slower than an f/1.8 lens. I don't know of any lenses faster than this in this zoom range.JOHN P : This is my favorite lens. I use it all the time. I've never seen a f/1.8 or f/1.2 in this size of a zoom. So I don't know how to compare it. But it is very sharp. And a zoom in this size range is very handy. Using it with my OLY M5 mark 11 it makes a great hand held lens for bird shooting. And it is great as as a night hand held lens.JOANNE G : I find it better than the 3.5, yes. Sharper images. I don't have experience with the 1.8 or 1.2 so can't speak to thatFRANK H : No! I have used it in just about all light conditions and have been very satisfied with the results.DOUGLAS H : Generally, an F-stop that is lower in number admits more light into the camera sensor thus is better in low light situation, provided the ISO and shutter speed settings are the same.

Excellent in every way

Superb image quality and so versatile with the 2x converter equivalent to 600mm in such a small package. Very solidly built with obvious feel of quality in the Pro series lens

Excellent optics in a small package

Superb optics, easy to carry, and clever lens hood to boot. I've used many 70-200 equivalent lenses over the years, from Canon to Sony to Nikon to Fuji. This might be my favorite. A couple of reasons: -Extra reach: the long end is 300mm equivalent -lighter weight=easier to carry for long periods -the built in collapsible hood is super clever and functional. Saves the annoying need to remove, flip around and re attach the hood every time you pack it up.

My Favorite Lens of All Time

I have wanted this lens since I was 15 years old and first got my hands on one through a rental service. I waited until I got my first adult job and then I bought the lens. It is my favorite lens of all time. I have used the 12-40mm 2.8 lens for many years and while that lens holds a very special place in my heart, nothing can hold a candle to this lens. I have used it for photographing aircrafts during my travels, take numerous portraits as an on campus photographer at my University.

A top performing professional lens in every way A MUST HAVE

Of the 6 Pro lenses I have although I fully enjoy each and every one of them, this lens is special. it's rendition is near magical. It is surgically sharp which for me is a good thing. It can stretch the gamut of photography from weddings, events, landscapes, sports, even portraits. The build is like a Rolls Royce and the focus speed is instant and accurate. I have nothing but the highest praise for this lens. If you don't have one you NEED this lens. It will thrill you each time you put it on to your body.

Might not have fallen in love with the OM-1 without this lens

There's nothing that showcases the OM-1's image stabilization like shooting handheld at 600mm equivalent (150mm + 2x teleconverter + 2x MFT->FF conversion) and having the resulting images come out perfectly sharp. The teleconverter was really the reason I opted to go for the f/2.8 version of this lens instead of the cheaper f/4 version; it's a decision I'm not regretting. Also, its focal range gets a lot closer than you'd think -- almost into macro territory, and with some very nice bokeh when taking advantage of that. This was some spendy glass, but there are photos I couldn't take without it.

Great lens with great outcomes

The images are super sharp. The zoom is effortless and the outcome is superb. BUT the tripod collar mount is not the same as others from Olympus so an Arca Swiss does not fit it. A shame that OLY doesn't use ONE mounting format for all the lenses with tripod collars.

Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro is an extremely sharp & close focusing telephoto zoom!

I have been using MFT equipment for my lightweight nature photography kit for about five years. This lens is replacing the Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 lens that I have using since the beginning. It has better reach, it has better weatherproofing, and with the addition of Olympus 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters provides a reach out to 600mm in an extremely compact form. It focuses to about 2.3 feet and with a teleconverter in place, 600mm focusing at 2.3' is amazing. When I am in a blind with my full frame camera and super telephoto on this is impossible. 16.4 feet is as close as you can get. This lens will be a real advantage when the subject gets close quickly.

If you are a serious Olympus/OMS shooter you should have this lens.

Wow! I thought it couldn't impress me more than the 12mm-100mm F4. I was wrong. Focus speed with E-M1 III is amazing. Sharpness is top notch for any zoom lens. Construction is an example of how it should be done. Not a new design, but was well thought out when it was designed years ago.

Really good lens

This is an amazing lens, best I have used. Photos come out crisp and with an F2.8 the main subject gets all the focus which is a plus for my kind of nature photography.

In love with my 40-150mm

I'm not so much an Olympus telephoto user. However I felt the need to have this lens in my hands. The purchase was fabulous, I am very happy with the quality of the lens, its versatility and its sharpness. Very happy with the purchase. Thanks to the entire Olympus team.

BE AWARE THAT UPDATING THE FIRMWARE CAN COMPLETELY RUIN THIS LENS!

This would be a 5 star lens but I am giving it 2 stars because I had it for a total of 30 minutes before a routine firmware update using the Olympus software turned this $1500 lens into a $1500 paperweight. It is now unusable. Olympus offers no solutions other than sending it in for professional repair. This is a HUGE FLAW that something so routine can mean life or death causing complete failure of a piece of equipment some people stake their income on. The fact it cannot be fixed without sending it in is ridiculous. This has been reported on the micro 4/3 forums and OLYMPUS NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM! BE AWARE THAT UPDATING THE FIRMWARE CAN COMPLETELY RUIN THIS LENS!

Completely satisfied with the ?Total Package.?

Amazing results, completely impressed and satisfied. I bought this lens along with an E-M1X body, and an MC-20 teleconverter and couldn?t be happier. I can walk for hours carrying them and when I need to, I can move into position quickly. This allows me to get shots that I would never have gotten if I were tethered to a tripod with equipment too heavy to move around with. As if the portability weren?t enough, the quality of the pictures this lens, with or without the teleconverter produces, is nothing short of amazing. In summary, with its reach thanks to the teleconverter which produces a 35mm equivalent 600mm focal length, the stunning quality of the optics, portability due to its light weight, and very reasonable pricing make this THE ?Total Package.? Well done OM-D, please keep it up.

Amazing build.

Amazing lens. Well built. You feel confident carrying this around. Do yourself a favor and ditch the hood and get a third party hood that isnt so fragile. Doent have the reach I need for birds though. If you are after birds get the 100 to 400mm.

Beautiful Glass

LOveeeee this lens. Only "down-side" is that it is very heavy by M4/3 standards. It is a feather compared to my old Nikon 70-200 2.8 - all a matter of perspective. It is a great unit, no extension when zooming is a plus as it the integrated lens hood. Again, this is a big-heavy chunk of pro glass that is built like a TANK.

Olympus Pro lenses exceed my already high standards

Incredible lens. I'm writing this review after only a couple of weeks with the 40-150mm f2.8 Pro, but I've shot hundreds of images with it on my OM-D E-M1 Mark III and with the 2x teleconverter. The quality of this lens and the amazing stabilization provided by the Mark III far exceed my expectations (which were high).

Background blur beast

With the short focal distance this lens gives me the background blur I need for certain shots. Great for wild life and for portraits. It?s all in your hands and creativity. Add either teleconverter and you can expand your own process. Love this lens!

Incredibly consistent!

The first time I borrowed this lens and shot with it, I knew it was something special. Borrowing/ renting time and time again and getting different copies which all had the same consistent image quality I knew this was an EXCELLENT lens. When it came time to purchase a system, I went with Olympus and this is my first lens. Due to budget constrains, I purchased a "pre-loved" version and have NOT been disappointed. Sharp, fast, and accurate with crystal clear results I firmly believe this is one of the best lenses money can by regardless of the system being used. I'll put this lens up against any of the Nikon, Canon, or Sony lenses I've used in the past. I've used this lens for anything from portraits to landscapes, very versatile. Wonderful piece of kit!

It won?t disappoint you

Imagine it replaces the 70-200mm f/2.8 and 120-300mm f/2.8 on a full frame. Very sharp, very good autofocus. I tried it with the teleconverter 1.4x and 2x and it work great. When I want to my top quality lenses for a good range with me I bring the 12-40mm f/2.8 and the 40-150mm f/2.8

Outstanding lens!!!

This lens is one of the best zoom telephoto lenses that I’ve ever used! It is sharp from edge to edge, has great contrast and color, and is relatively light for the focal lengths provided. And as an added benefit, this lens lets you focus up close for almost macro-like shots. Highly recommend this lens!!

About Olympus 40-150mm f2.8

PRO REVIEW by Gavin Hoey, Photographer, Educator, and Content Creator

"If I need a little more zoom, the 40-150mm is perfect for making frame-filling shots and being a zoom, there’s plenty of framing options. Despite its long reach and wide f/2.8 aperture, it’s surprisingly small, so tends to travel with me to all my location shoots. "

OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital ED 40-150MM F2.8 PRO BLACK LENS

Zoom in, zoom out—a good telephoto lens doesn’t care what you do. It adjusts quickly to your demands and takes the best picture possible, no matter how far away or close the subject. Introducing the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital ED 40-150MM F2.8 PRO BLACK LENS, a lens that can handle everything from far-off shots to near portraits, pulling off each shot with beauty and precision.

Product Highlights

  • The chief innovation here? Autofocus that’s dang near stealthy, thanks to the industry-first Dual VCM. This voice coil motor and the lack of gears offers quick, quiet autofocus no matter how far or close the shot.
  • Add a dash of durability—heck, add a whole heap of it. Because this Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lens is splashproof, dustproof, and even freezeproof, which means even you northerners will be able to use this lens year-round.
  • The zoom range is fantastic, offering a high maximum and low minimum, which gives you the versatility to shoot live events with ease.

Brandish your Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lens at your next important event and you’re sure to take crisp, high-quality photos no matter where you plant your subject.

Learn about the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital ED 40-150MM F2.8 PRO BLACK LENS

There are two “P’s” that matter most to photographers in the market for a quality telephoto lens: portability and professionalism. Sure, producing a professional-quality telephoto shot is important—and we’ll talk about the features in the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital ED 40-150MM F2.8 PRO BLACK LENS that make it possible here. But we at Adorama ask: what ever happened to good old-fashioned portability? Luckily, you can get the best of both worlds in this Olympus 40-150mm lens, part of the Olympus Micro Four Thirds lens series, because it offers both in one lightweight, easy-to-use lens.

  • Innovation where it counts. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “two minds are better than one,” then you know the power of adding a little something extra to the equation. In photography, there’s no better place than with this, the Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 lens’s industry-first Dual VCM, or, voice coil motor, autofocus system. The focusing mechanism is separated into two distinct lens groups, controlled by linear drive motors that give your autofocus system a speed and precision that’s unequaled in a lens of this type. What’s more, the lack of gears here will be obvious in how quietly your AF runs.
  • Durability and construction - the two should always go hand in hand. With the Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 lens, they do, thanks to the premium metal lens body that incorporates a design of 16 lens elements in 10 groups. And the Super EDA glass will help reduce the chromatic aberration that so many people who’ve bought cheap lenses over the years know all too well.  There’s no reason you have to settle for second best when this lens was built with first-rate skill.
  • Dustproof, freezeproof, splashproof—heck, the Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lens sounds worldproof when you put it like that. But truly, this lens is capable of handling a number of elements, which means that you’ll be able to brandish it just about anywhere you like. Sure, you can worry about a lens of this quality, but with its tough construction, why would you ever need to?
  • Portable. We can’t go over a list of features without addressing perhaps the most important one—this Olympus is just dang portable, capable of going just about anywhere with you. Its inner zoom mechanism allows the lens to keep a very-portable size of just over six inches, ensuring that you get the most possible zoom power for your space. It’s not a space telescope—but it performs like a heck of a telephoto lens without the burden of carrying around something big and bulky.
  • Perfect for wedding or event photography thanks to a minimum focus distance of just 20 inches, which gives you the option of zooming in or zooming out to take beautiful portraits and live event shots. And there’s plenty of light-grabbing prowess here, which ensures that even those dimly lit wedding reception halls will serve as a beautiful setting.

It’s rare—even here at Adorama—to find a telephoto lens of such magnifying power built into such a portable package. But the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko Digital ED 40-150MM F2.8 PRO BLACK LENS manages to pull it off with flair.

Powerfully Portable
At less than two pounds and a constant 6.2-inch length (lens movement is internal), the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO combines with OM-D or PEN camera bodies to create a very stable shooting platform.

Enhance Your Zoom
A 1.4x teleconverter is available for the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO that extends its focal length to a whopping 210mm (35mm equivalent of 420mm) for those really long shots. You can also get a ZUIKO protective filter that features Olympus' renowned ZERO coating technology.

No Detail Spared
The bundled lens hood has been marvelously designed to collapse back onto the lens for easy storage. When extended, the locking mechanism will fully support the weight of the lens and camera body.
