Not good rendering skin

I had to return it , i tried to love the lens but i did not, reason for it the way it renders skin for portraits wide open, no doubt it is SHARP, tack sharp, it grabs the eyes with face /eye detect turn on, and it gets the iris and details in the eye amazingly sharp , however the rendition of skin ( in the area falling within the sharp focusing plane) is not good, it looks like it is softened but still sharp, for lack of a better words, i do not think it does render skin well, i tried under different lighting conditions , same , as if you got the skin flattened with an iron and turned it into porcelain...! ( I thought this is for much longer focal lengths lenses where it is called iron face, not 90 mm FF equivalent lens) , sharp but not good rendering the skin , so it went back. I may order another copy , it could be the copy i had, but looking at how sharp it is at F 1.2 i think it is a structural flaw and not one lens out of the bunch. Could be softening the bokeh to get it to be feathered did something to the rendering of colors especially the skin? Do not know , but i tried to like it , I will attempt another try.

My favorite portrait lens

The rendering of this lens is beautiful. Even when stopped down to f/2.8 or smaller, it produces a more pleasing image than my M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro zoom lens. At f/1.2, the in-focus area is incredibly sharp, whereas the bokeh is very gentle and smooth.

Fabulous.

Fabulous, really improves the GH5, also great with the BMPCC4K. Renders surface textures nicely, which I feel the Panasonic lenses tend to lack.

Just fantastic!

Solid build a truly 5 stars prime lens for MFT. Creamy bokeh wide open and tack sharp as well. It close focus (50cm) allows you to do close up portrait head shot with awesome results. I am using it with my EM5 Ii and the pair works great. I don’t find the combo to be too heavy or overly front heavy. This is subjective, even though I find it is less sharp than the 75mm f1.8 and/or 17mm f1.2 Pro, the final photo rendering shows more real life looking than the other mentioned lenses. Some have said it produces a more organic look of which I totally agree. I find that stopping down to f2.8 though yielding sharper image than f1.2, but it is not by much. You have to PP. So I most often just shoot it wide open. I only stop down when taking a more close up and want to have everything tack sharp from eyes to ears. To sum it up, Focuses quick, Tack sharp wide open, Stellar IQ with fantastic rendering. If you want nohitng but the best for this FL, you cannot go wrong. I am able to take more keepers of my daughter and family in low light situations. So the hefty price is well worth it for me. Yes I highly recommend this lens particularly if you shoot with Olympus MFT camera.

Just. Wow.

This is my first professional level prime lens, and wow. This is an excellent piece of glass. As far as I can tell, it?s sharp through and through. The f1.2 helps a lot with low light photos, and not to forget the ?to-die-for? bokeh this brings. I?ve always thought bokeh was just the out of focus background, but I was taught something else with this lens, it?s the quality of the out of focus areas. It is just so creamy and high quality for bokeh that I had to just settle for the bokeh of other lenses (looking at you 25mm 1.7 from another mother). I guess the only downside as reviewers have mentioned are price, size, and weight. You will easily forget about those issues as soon as you put this piece of glass on your camera. I currently use it with my em5ii. The image quality and look you get form this is instantly paid off the moment you start using it, the weight is almost negligible the moment you lift it because it just feels balanced even on a body like this (even on my em10 it feels balanced), and the size feels just right to handle. So I definitely thing if you?re looking for a lens that excels at portraiture, I think this is one of the lenses you have to have.

Excellent lens

I bought this lens to get crisp photos indoors with no flash. It delivers. (Of course, the images in good light are crisp, too.) It's a great lens.

This lens delivers

This may be my new favorite m43 lens. Sharp, fast, high quality. I sold my 45mm f/1.8 to move to this lens. It's bigger, bulkier, but worth having in the bag. Great portrait lens.

Both lens are amazingly awesome for portrait.

I use this lens for Panasonic bodies I had panasonic leica 42.5 f1.4 and comparison between two lens that Olym 45mm f1.2pro has more contrast, colour saturation and beutiful bokeh, but I also love Pana Leica 42.5mm f1.4 because it has own feeling for Leica such as, less contrast, water painting feeling, transparency color!! Both lens are amazingly awesome for portrait. However, I prefer Olympus 45mm f1.2 because It looks much sharper in f1.2 and focusing is quicker and very accurate in Panny bodies.

This is the lens you fall in love with ....

I just got this lens at the local photo show. It was hard to decide between 75/1.8 and 45/1.2 lens. But on the end the macro capability was a bit better with this one. The focus is "INSTANT" I mean is just there !!! , with E-M1mII. Last week I took a lot of pictures at the convention center with low light situation and all come very nice. Over the weekend I did several roses at 1.2 and what a soft background I got, I am very impressed. Now I can't wait to do some panorama images and more flowers .... I switched last year from 5Dm4 to E-M1mII and it has been great experience from 20 Lb I am down to 10 Lb with more gear in my backpack.

My GO-TO Portrait Lens

I am primarily a people photographer and portraits & fashion portraits are my specialty. I switched to Olympus late last year with the OM-D E-M1 Mark II and this 45mm f/1.2 PRO lens is probably the sharpest lens I have ever worked with. Solid construction with the bonus of using the same filter size as the 25mm f/1.2 which I also purchased and the 17mm f/1.2 which is on my list. Combined with my Mark II, the auto focus on this lens is wicked fast and accurate even in low light scenarios. I own the 75mm f/1.8 which is legendary in the M.Zuiko lineup but for my money the 45mm is the PERFECT portrait length lens.

Excellent lens with dreamy bokeh

This lens is a very capable portrait lens - sharp, well constructed, and weather sealed. However, the standout feature of this lens is the smooth and dreamy nature of the bokeh (out of focus areas). Highly recommended.

unbelievably fast, sharp, and light

it is high priced compared to the 45mm Olympus 1.8, and if you have one of those you might not want to duplicate what is already a very fine lens. but, this one is truly stupendous.

Fantastically fast lens

Fantastically fast lens... and tack sharp! Extremely similar (nearly identical) to the 25mm f1.2 in terms of size and shape. The Olympus quality is there and seems to be robust. As expected, you’ll need to take care when using large apertures (i.e. f1.2) as the lens will keep focus on one area, and blur out an area relatively close to the focus area (i.e. eyes in focus vs nose or ears out of focus).

The very best lens I have for my Olympus M4/3

On a par with the 75mm but more flexible in use--sharp, fast, fast focus, reasonable weight for a Pen F.

A beautiful piece of optical engineering

The 45mm f1.2 just arrived. It is a handsome piece of glass. I was amazed at its photos with the EM-1 Mark II in low light. Quite extraordinary. The shallow DOF will take a bit of thought to plumb its full potential; but its potential for portraiture is readily evident. I also own the companion 25mm f1.2 and will likely get the 17mm f1.2 next year. One nice touch is that all three lenses take a 62mm filter: that will be a novelty -- not having to buy a separate array of filters for each lens. One costly Heliopan polarizer or ND will fit all three lenses.

This is my new "Never take off my camera lens", it is that good.

I purchased this lens as soon as it was available and after using it for the past 5 days, my only regret is that I did not have this lens years ago. I have been a Professional Photography for over 25 years shooting primarily images with people as the subject, so portrait lens are important to me. I have used some great professional portrait lens but this lens exceeds them all. It is super light weight yet built like a tank. The image quality is THE BEST I have seen for any lens that I have used wide open, except for maybe the M.Zuiko 12-100mm, but that is f4.0. One of the things that I noticed when I was walking around taking portraits of people on my photo walk, was the incredible speed of the Auto focus system. On my OMD EM1 Mark 2 or my Pen F, the image was just in focus, no hunting and ready to shoot before I was. I never waited for the focus, I just waited for the right expression or moment. I used the lens mostly at f1.2 and after looking at my images there really is no need to stop down. I own the M.Zuiko 75mm f1.8 also and I took both of these lens out to compare them. My hope was that the image quality of the 45mm would be at least close to the 75mm, which in itself was my favorite portrait lens. When I compared the images, it seems that at f1.4 on the 45mm, it matches the IQ of the 75mm, which is amazing if you know who sharp the 75mm lens is. This is my new "Never take off my camera lens", it is that good.

We’ve designed the M.Zuiko 45mm F1.2 PRO with one goal in mind: to make your sharpest, most beautiful portraits effortless. You’ll shoot wide open at f1.2 and capture tack sharp subjects and smooth feathered bokeh with a depictive three dimensional result. We’ve included autofocus that’s fast and accurate, even at f1.2. Our most advanced lens coating virtually eliminates flares. And with splashproof and dustproof metal construction, a compact lightweight design, and our brightest aperture for superior low-light performance, this ultimate portrait prime will be one of your go-to lenses in every shooting environment.

Sharpest Resolution

At Olympus, we bring the very best optics to life. Tools designed to work better so your photography is better. This advanced F1.2 PRO lens combines ultra shallow depth of field and ultra high resolution at the maximum f1.2 aperture setting. Unlike other fast prime lenses, we’ve removed the need to stop down for improved performance, so you capture more beautiful photographs. 14 lens elements in 10 groups eliminate spherical and chromatic aberrations and suppress color fringing, and our very best Z Coating Nano suppresses flares from in-frame light sources. All to ensure that every portrait is sharp, clear, and exactly as you envisioned.

Featured Bokeh

Beautiful background bokeh is a must for perfect portraits. To give you complete creative control, the 45mm F1.2 PRO provides two types of bokeh effects. Shoot wide open at f1.2 to produce feathered bokeh that transitions smoothly from sharp to defocused areas. The softer background appearance enhances your subject. Or, produce traditional solid bokeh by stopping down the aperture, enhancing shapes in the background. Combined with the razor sharp subject, you’ll create a natural three dimensional effect. And because the 45mm F1.2 PRO doesn’t use filters in its optics, light transmission is maximized for sharp details and stunning bokeh effects in both bright and low light.

Fast & Accurate AF

One of the keys to beautiful sharp portraits is focus. Some fast prime lenses compromise AF speed by using a large focusing mechanism with multiple elements. Fortunately, the 45mm F1.2 PRO is specially designed to be compromise-free. It uses a lightweight inner focusing mechanism with a single lens element to provide fast and sharp AF performance, even at the lens’ widest f1.2 aperture. Excellent close-up shooting capabilities help you to capture larger, more dramatic bokeh areas. And the Movie and Still Compatible mechanism provides quiet, smooth focusing – ideal for shooting video.

fast

Compact & Weatherproof

Easily capture shots in challenging conditions without worrying about your gear. The 45mm F1.2 PRO’s premium metal construction is hermetically sealed to be splashproof, dustproof, and freezeproof (all the way down to 14°F / -10°C). Its optics are efficiently designed so that overall size and weight are significantly less than what you’ll find with other fast prime lenses. It’s the perfect complement to a compact weatherproof OM-D camera, a combination that’s ideal for all day handheld shooting in any environment.

Professional Convenience & Control

We’ve designed the 45mm F1.2 PRO to give you efficient and convenient control of your gear. The customizable Lens Function Button (L-Fn) lets you control your choice of camera functions right from the lens barrel. Programmable functions include Focus Peaking, AF Stop, and Magnify. The Manual Focus Clutch on the lens’ focus ring lets you instantly shift between auto and manual focus. You can preset a focus position using the easy-to-read distance meter, and by pulling the ring toward you, instantly return to that position from AF mode.
