Questions & Answers

Shopper : Can I use with a Cannon 5d mark III ?PETER A : No, this lens only fits a Micro Four Thirds mount. There is no adapter possible due to the shorter flange distance.BRETT H : No, it's a micro 4/3rds lens. CASEY S : No. This lens is made for micro four thirds cameras. Even with an adaptor it would not cover the full frame image sensor of the canon 5d mk III.MAULIK P : I don't know of any adapter to mount micro-four-third lenses on Canon or Nikon, the reverse is possible.JONATHAN A : No. It's a micro four thirds system lens. STUART G : Sorry, you can't use this lens with a Canon SLR. This lens is "Micro Four-Thirds" mount standard. i've see adapters to put Canon lenses on Micro 4/3 bodies butt not M 4/3 lenses on Canon bodies. WESLEY Y : No, Micro Four Thirds cameras only.DAVID P : No! Impossible.
Shopper : Is this significantly better for portraits that the Panasonic 45mm macro? Does one stop make a difference?DALE G : I had the same question and concern. I really researched both the Panasonic and Olympus 45 mm lenses carefully. After much thought, I came to the conclusion that the one stop does make a difference and bought the Olympus lens. I have not regretted my decision. It takes great photos and because it is small and compact, it is always in my bag! You will not be disappointed!!ALEXANDER K : I've found it to make *some *difference, yes. Both lenses have IMHO nice bokeh, but the DOF at f/1.8 is a bit shallower. For instance, at 6ft subject distance, I get (e.g. check on DOFMaster) @f/2.8: DOF = .45ft @f/1.8: DOF = .28ft Also note that this lens is a lot cheaper than the Pana-Leica 45mm f/2.8 macro, as well as smaller and lighter. I own both since I was impatient and bought the macro when it came out (i.e., before the f/1.8). Unless I suspect that I'll shoot macro-ish stuff, I'll typically take the Olympus lens with me and leave the macro at home. I consider it a nice addition to my lens collection; if the lenses had become available in reverse order, I am not sure I could've justified buying the macro lens after buying the f/1.8 first. YMMV, of course.BENNETT P : I think it would make a difference. It's 1 1/3 stops and I know I can see a 1-stop difference in background blur. The Olympus 45mm is a very nice lens -and it's tiny.DONALD H : I would like to help but do not have experience with the Panasonic lens so I can not comment on difference.KARTHI U : One stop matters only of you are looking for very shallow Dof in a tight close up. But Pany. does macro as well. For normal portrait any ways you will use f/4 and above. CHRISTINE T : I own both lenses, and I feel like the quality of the images is similar. However, the Olympus lens focuses much faster on my Olympus Pen camera than the Panasonic does. The pancake lens however is a lot more compact and easy to carry around. So there are some advantages to both.MATTHEW P : I have not tried the Panasonic lens. This lens is great for portraits. I also use the lens for interviews, having one more stop comes in handy when you have little control over lighting.MICHAEL B : I've never used the Panasonic 45mm, but do like the Olympus quite a bit. I think the short answer for portraits is no, one stop is not that bit of a deal. On the other hand, if macro photography is at all important to you, it's probably worth shelling out the extra money for the Panasonic. That said, the M. Zuiko is a great little lens! It's very small and very fast and if (like me) you like the M43 format, then having a camera you can easily put in a coat pocket is a strength worth building on. The extra stop did help me this weekend, whilst shooting some friends in a dark, karaoke bar. Not portraiture, per se, but the extra stop or so certainly didn't hurt.DAVE A : It should be better for portraits because of it's faster maximum aperture of f/1.8 will give a more pleasing bokeh in the backgrounds behind your portrait subjects. I do not have the 45mm macro but can say this lens is very sharp and works very well for portraiture work.RYAN M : Sorry.. So the Panasonic is a better choice. Other options for macro would be the excellent Olympus 50mm 2.0 macro, but it requires an adaptor and focus is slow. Also, Olympus is coming out with a new macro lens soon, I think 60 mm. And there is always the option of an old manual focus lens and adapter. If you like macros, it's a tough decision. If you like portraits, it's a no brainier- buy the Olympus 45mm 1.8! It's the best portrait lens in micro 4/3 right now.RYAN M : 1 stop doesn't make a ton of difference, but if portraits are primarily your reason for buying it, the Olympus also focuses faster, particularly in newer camera bodies. It is also much smaller and much cheaper- a very nice lens. The easier question is probably whether or not you want a macro lens. If you do, the Olympus can't focus very close at all, so the panaso
Shopper : How does this lens compare to the Olympus 50mm f/2 (which I currently use on my E-PL1)? (aside it won't get as close, minor difference in length/speed and other things I can read in the specs)RYAN M : Both lenses produce great image quality. The 45mm is not a macro lens like the 50 is, but otherwise theres not much to complain about- it focuses much faster, and it fits well on micro 4/3 bodies. It is VERY small and light! I use it on my e-pl1 as well, and it is a very nice lens.

A sweet little lens

This lens is really great for my intended use. So far I have been very pleased with the photos I have taken. The background is nice and soft for my pet portraits. The detail is fantastic. I still have a lot to explore with the lens but I am certain it will not let me down.

tiny, sharp, affordable

The lens is so much fun to use. It is crazy tiny, sharp and good price. Yes, it feels a bit plasticky, but the images it produces are really amazing. I bought the new OM System 20mm 1.4 pro and mostly use that since I need weather sealing, but in some ways, this lens is optically better or at least on par. Unless you need weather sealing, this is a phenomenal lens and a real gem in the M43 system.

one of my favorite lenses

I am fond of the 90 mm equivalent and enjoy the smooth rendering. The f/1.2 may be better, but is also more expensive and much bigger. This is a lens that gets thrown into my bag as an extra or lives, together with the 25mm f/1.4 in my coat pocket. Lightweight, but well-made.

Great for low light. Need about 12-15 feet for the space between you and the subject. Great for home parties.

For the money, this is a game changer for portrait photographers

I have been shooting with this lens for about 4 months now. Outdoors, shooting portraits and art nudes in nature has been an eye opener. The bokeh you get from this lens is divine, and the sharpness and color is exceptional. I sometimes wish it was just a hair less sharp at times

Light, small, versatile, sharp, Macro

Small, light, incredibly sharp. Macro is a big plus. I actually both this lens to replace a Sigma 30mm F2.8 ART Lens. Also a very good lens, but no Macro. My Zuiko 30mm F1.8 is very versatile lens, it can be used as a prime lens, portrait lens, or Macro lens, all in one. It is also very simple to use, Macro goes on its own when you very close to subject. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Fast, quit, accurate, sharp.

I can't price this lens enough. On how rich the colors are, how sharp the image is, how nicely saturated my pictures are. All of it is from lens two inches long. It looks like a toy, and give you almost pro looking pictures. It fast, quiet, accurate. How can you bit this? I could not find one drawback of owning this lens.

A little gem of a lens

I recently purchased this lens from the refurb store for a great price. It is small and light and easily fits into any bag to compliment my larger 12-100 Pro zoom. Do to lots of field curvature in the design this is not a great landscape lens as the edges will not be sharp wide open. However, this is a portrait lens so softer edges at wide apertures works in favor of its main purpose - to isolate your subject, Bokeh is beautiful and the price is affordable. Get it, you won?t regret it

The focal length is exactly what we were looking for

The focal length is exactly what we were looking for. The only issue was that it would have been great to have come with a lens shade. Since it did not, we used the shade from the 12mm lens and used gaff tape as the required spacer.

Great camera, no need to bring my DSLR with me everywhere all the time.

Stunning pictures for most situation, with the 45mm lens, you'll just be mesmerized at what you can get out of this little camera. People will probably think you spent thousands of dollars, image quality is just that good.

Thank you for your help and fast turnaround in making my purchase

It is a light, relatively fast lens that produces excellent images. It is just what I need as the FF cameras I had where too heavy for my ailing back. It was a good trade at Adorama to get my Olympus system. Thank you for your help and fast turnaround in making my purchase.

Tumble down a cliff and still takes perfect, detailed shots.

I have had this lens for at least 2, if not 3, years now and it's been my go-to lens. It lives on my camera and can capture nearly everything I want on a trip or at home. It's small and powerful. Why am I leaving a review now? Because, my lens took a 40 foot tumble down the terrace vineyards of Cinque Terre AND SURVIVED WITHOUT ANY CRACKS OR LENS DAMAGE. I was amazed and thankful. Olympus makes great quality gear that'll last you. 10/10 would recommend this lens.

Portrait Perfect

This was the first actual portrait lens I purchased for my micro 4/3 camera (Olympus Pen F), and considering how beautiful portraits turn out with it could easily be my only portrait lens and I'd be totally happy. It's sharp, fast focusing, gives me fantastic bokeh- pictures of my friends are better than ever, and my cats look glorious each and every time, I love this lens!

A great portrait lens for micro 4/3, plasticky

This lens duplicates a 90mm f4 lens on a full frame camera. So it's great for head shots and longer shots. Focus speed is "instant". The body is silver colored plasic and picks up scratches and dents easily. This doesn't affect it's performance. I don't use my Olympus micro 4/3 much any more, but this lens was my favorite.

Excellent lens

Bought this lens several months ago but didn't use it much until a few weeks ago. Finally pulled it out for two night outings in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Very happy with the results. Very good sharpness under low light conditions when wide open. IQ excellent with accurate color reproduction. Captured the colors exactly as I saw them. The size and weight is a real advantage when wandering a city for several hours.

Great search tools on the website

I found exactly what I was looking for very easily. That's huge because I'm not a photographer, this was a gift for my son - I had limited information to use as a reference. The website was easy to use, and the shipping was fast. My son used the lens to photograph a recent concert and is happy with the results.

Incredible Lens!

A really nice small compact lens. It's light weight and discreet. It can be used as a portrait or a discreet for street photography. The pictures are sharp and clear. A very good alternative especially for the price. I would recommend going with the Portrait Lens Kit as it's the best value out there!

Fantastic lens!!!

This is actually the second copy of this lens that I have owned. The first one I lost along with my first M43 camera body, and I was way more bummed about losing the lens. I had wanted another one for years, but couldn’t bring myself to repurchase it. More recently my entire M43 setup was stolen, and when it came time to start rebuilding my setup, this was the top piece of glass on my acquisitions list. When Olympus had their big sale, I had to jump on it at that price. Really one of my favorite pieces of glass that I have ever owned. Small, light, and cheap enough that if something happens to it it’s not the end of the world, but excellent photo quality (tack sharp images, but not lacking in character), and lightning quick autofocus. A must have for M43 as I see it.

I'm VERY happy with this lens

By ALAN R.

I use two systems, a Nikon D800 with a good selection of lenses and my Oly EM-1, also with a nice selection of lenses and this 45mm 1.8, in terms of intended use, compares to my Nikkor 85mm 1.4. This M Zuiko 45mm is a very nice lens, very sharp with good bokeh and I have had some fantastic results using it for portraits as well as other shots where I wanted a shallow DOF. The camera and lens is WAY smaller and lighter than my D800 & 85mm so the Oly has become my daily carry-camera. For its pr...

This is a Great Lens.

When I bought this lens, I really did not think that I really needed it. I was wrong. I use this lens a lot. It is small, compact, lightweight and is in my bag always. If i what low depth of field, this is a great lens for this. The other usage it is getting is video. It is a great interview lens because of the low depth of field. The background blur is wonderful. I use it on my GH2 and AF100. Thank you Olympus.
