It takes great telephoto shots but the best thing is the micro capability. I have found on many occasions that I use the zoom lens instead of changing to my micro. Use on OMD EM5

Use with Olympus Adapter on EM5. Worst AF of all my lenses. Searches all over the place. Would use my money on a micro four thirds lens.

Great zoom lens!

This is a great lens for the money! I bought it to photograph my grandkids during their sports events from a distance. This lens is just what I needed. I also like that it has a switch from auto to manual focus. Very pleased.

The worst Zuiko lens

I purchased this lens for nature photography and took it out for a test shoot today photographing birds and butterflies. I attached the lens to my Olympus E-3 and noticed right away that it felt much lighter and easier to handle than my Zuiko 50-200mm f/2.8. However, the lightness of the lens and its relatively low sticker price are the only good things I can say about it. The lens searches a lot on autofocus and is slow to focus even with well lit scenes. Darker scenes are impossible even with the lens wide open and at ISO 400. These focusing problems make the lens useless for photographing moving animals. I also had problems with still subjects because shutter vibration was too much for the lens when extended over 100mm. I tried bracing the lens at the end to eliminate the vibration, but to no avail. Use of a tripod won't help with this because the lens doesn't have a tripod ring. I can't recommend this lens for any purpose.

Excellent Multi-purpose lens

Shooting from wheel chair, this is an excellent all around lens. From macro to shy animals the 140 (with close focus) to 600mm effective range covers all my nature photo needs. Manual focus switch on barell real asset. Use on E-620 with excellent results. Heavy, but shoot hand-held in field. Recommend to anyone shooting outside. Range from Macro to infinity.

Good in 70-200mm region but not fast

I used this lens both on Olympus 4/3 (E520, E620) and m4/3 (E-PL1) bodies with the MMF2 adapter. The focus is definatelly better on 4/3 bodies but works ok on m4/3 for static subjects. Moving subjects are a challenge and prefocus method would be the best with this lens. In terms of absolute sharpness the 70-200 is the range to be, also closing down 1-3 stops helps a lot. Bokeh is not that great so pick your backgrounds carefully. Good lens for macro olso especially on the micro4/3 bodies with weak AA filter.

Buy it for its reach.

I use this lens mainly for its reach. With 300mm (600mm eq.) and magnification of 0.50x (1.0x eq.), I use it for birds and insects. It can be painfully slow to focus especially in low light. My use of it is limited to wildlife, where I would be "stalking" animals/birds/insects anyway. In such circumstances I prefer having long reach than speed.

Lightweight compared to others like it

I bought this lens to get closer shots of animals that could be spooked by moving closer, and also for subjects that i could not get closer to due to terrain. However because of it's pack weight i question myself when bringing it on mountain hikes.

Great lens for wildlife!

It is quite heavy to carry around, but when you need to shoot wildlife at long distances, or want to zoom in on far away details, it does a great job!

Great lens for wildlife photography.

I have used this lens to take images of wildlife on several trips and the magnification is wonderful. I was also able to use it to take images of far off buildings and frame them with surrounding vegetation. A sturdy mono or tripod is necessary since I do not have image stabilization.

It would be nice if the lens was faster

It would be nice if the lens was faster (f/2.0+) however cost of that type of lens ups the price big time along with the size and weight. This lens is well worth what I paid for it. The expectations I had for this lens are greater than I thought it would be.

Better to be in the Game

As a Ski Mountaineer, camera weight and bulk is a significant issue. I chose the Olympus Four Thirds System because the size is compact for DSLR's. I've used the system in the winter backcountry throughout North America and been thrilled with the results . Reading camera reviews you realize there are shotcomings with every lens and system, but when I got the Zuiko 70mm-300mm, the variety of reach and composition increased beyond all my concerns about weight and exposure. I shoot with plenty of light, so f-stop is not my concern -- please keep this in mind if you are on the margins of the day -- it is just good to have a lens that offers this much range.

More Powerful than it looks

Used with Olympus E-450 During outdoor Swim Meets and found my photos have doubled in the amount taken. I still shoot like analog 1 photo at a time looking for that photo opportunity. Pool is generly 50 meters long and about the same wide. With this lens I can reach 4 or 5 lanes over and seam like I was standing right next the the lane. Its so easy to use, that I get taken away with all I can shoot. Using with Sigle auto focus you have to make adjustments either manual or auto.

Great for price

Received the lens for Christmas, but I got to pick it out. Found it on Sale and bought the 'kit' fpr added savings. Intent was for wildlife at longer range. Had a chance to use it at Balboa Park in San Diego. Using an E520 got some great long range shots went on to get flowers in 'stand-off' macro mode. Not a pro, but like what I see. Can print everything at 8.5 by 11 with no loss due to lens.

Capable Zoom

Great lens for the money. One needs to get familiar with this lens, it isn't fast but increase ISO to compensate. Also has good macro capability. Some indicate the lens is somewhat soft, I don't find this so, probably depends on camera setup to a degree. While not being fast, when used within its limitations it is a good performer. The range make it very useful for wildlife and some sports situations, outdoors. A versatile lens for sure.

Excellent buy for the money!

I bought this lens several years ago and have not been disappointed in it at all. Take your time to get to know it and you will love it as well. With my E520 or my E500, it works well with both and is consistent. I have gotten some fantastic shots with it. BTW, I have bought a lot of stuff from Adorama and so far have never been disappointed with them.

Great value, decent performance

Great for stationary wildlife in good lighting conditions. Bad for birds on the wing or on busy backgrounds. The autofocus is slow and touchy (on an E-620), hunting through the entire range when focus can't be immediately obtained. The electronic manual focus system has been difficult for me to adapt to, but when I can get focus correct, the photos have been turning out very nicely. Well worth the price for such a long lens, but it takes a lot of work to get high quality images.

Excellent value

Much better than I anticipated, expecting something like used the Canon 55-250. The build is solid, range is impressive and AF is accurate and comparable to the 55-250 on a Canon 40D. I use this with an Olympus E-620 for a good, cheap zoom package for the zoo and birds

Very sharp, lightweight

By KELLY D.

A suprisingly sharp and lightweight lens. I waited sometime for this lens and wasn't disappointed. I sold off my Canon L lens to save weight with my wildnerness hiking. The zoom is fairly tight with no zoom creep, and focuses very close..even closer with manual focus making it great for insect photography without scaring off the subject by being too close. Since the lens doesn't have a tripod mount, its best used in combination with a small bean bag at the upper end of the focal range..place...

the bomb

By surfer R.

This lens is a real winner. My surf photography has stepped up to the next level with this 600mm equivalent lens. Pictures are sharp as a tack, I have success with hand held shots of quick moving surfers, but a monopod is called for at the long end when every shot counts. It is so light and small I am the only one who knows just how much reach I am really getting out of my lens. The competition is lugging around ten pounds of glass to get shots this good.

OLYMPUS M. Zuiko 70-300MM F/4.0-5.6 E-ED ZOOM LENS

Capable of stunning zoomed shots and even precise close-up shots, the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko 70-300MM 4.0/5.6 E-ED ZOOM LENS is an astounding mix of super telephoto capabilities and high-contrast image performance. Here’s why:

Product Highlights

  • The Olympus 70-300mm zoom lens features an ability to take tele-macro photography thanks to an excellent zoom range, giving you almost unlimited options for every shot.
  • Weighing some 620 grams, this Olympus 70-300mm zoom lens is essentially as lightweight as anything else you’ll find in your trusty old “photography toolkit.”
  • Fast and accurate auto-focus ensures that you won’t miss a shot, no matter how far—or short—your zoom might be for the very next shot.

There’s more to mention, of course, but you’ll have to read the manual for that. Bottom line here is, procure your own Olympus 70-300mm if you want to give your zoomed shots an instant boost.

Learn about the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko 70-300MM F/4.0-5.6 E-ED ZOOM LENS

If you picture a telephoto lens capable of an astounding range of zoom power, what do you envision? In all likelihood, it’s a telephoto lens that’s bulky, heavy to carry, and utterly incapable of zooming out and taking a 1x magnification shot. Well, put those dreary thoughts of incapable telephoto zoom lenses to rest, because the OLYMPUS M. Zuiko 70-300MM f/4.0-5.6 E-ED ZOOM LENS is willing to show you that a good lens is capable of breaking those limitations. At Adorama, you’ll find a lot of telephoto lenses capable of good zoom range, but few are as versatile and as lightweight as this Olympus 70-300mm zoom lens. Here’s why:

  • Mobility. You don’t hear this word a lot when sites like Adorama are describing telephoto lenses. Usually, they talk all about zoom power, magnification and the like. But the Olympus 70-300mm zoom lens is a truly mobile lens thanks to its lightweight (only 620 grams) structure. If you’ve gotten used to the idea of lugging around a bulky telephoto zoom lens, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how easy and even fun this Olympus lens can be to carry.  And thanks to this lens being Four-Thirds System compatible, you won’t have to worry about its ability to work well with your camera body.
  • Magnification range. Covering a field of view to 600mm (35mm equivalent), this is actually a “super-telephoto zoom lens” by traditional standards. What makes it so appealing isn’t just the magnification, but the magnification range. Consider that the magnification can be brought back to 1x, offering you a selection of tele-macro photography that will produce an entirely different range of images than the usual zoom shots.
  • Serious aperture. With maximum aperture at f 4.0 – f 5.6, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to grab all the light you need, even if conditions aren’t always so ideal. With a super telephoto lens like the Olympus 70-300mm zoom lens, you’re going to need to have the aperture to support it, giving all of your images the clarity and the sharpness that comes with having enough light.
  • Detailed lens construction. The more you zoom in, the more your lens’s faults will be apparent. One small aberration can lead to an entire shot being ruined. Luckily, this Olympus lens is constructed with an intricate design, including 14 lens elements in 10 groups, which also includes 3 ED lenses. With 9 blades to provide a circular aperture diaphragm, you won’t have to worry about how each shot turns out: it will turn out looking its best, time and time again.
  • Versatility. Did we mention versatility yet? Because it’s one of our favorite things about this lens. Zoom out or in for landscapes, macro photography, night photography, live events, weddings, wildlife, sports action and even more.

Just how good is this telephoto lens, and how convenient? Let’s put it this way: if we were to build our ideal telephoto zoom lens from scratch, chances are the final product would look something like this OLYMPUS M. Zuiko 70-300MM 4.0/5.6 E-ED ZOOM LENS.

From the Manufacturer
Zuiko Digital ED 70-300mm F4.0-5.6... Covering field of view to 600mm (35mm equivalent), this high mobility super-telephoto zoom lens weighs only 620 grams. Also, this lens incorporates three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens elements to offer sharper, higher-contrast imaging performance.

Furthermore, 1x magnification (35mm equivalent) tele-macro photography is capable. Thanks to Four-Thirds system, the lens offers a lot of the footwork out of both super-telephoto and macro photography world.
