Olympus 75 mm 1.8 lens

I read up on this lens again, and watched several video reviews. It has been on my wish list for a few years now. I wish I would not have waited so long to buy this lens - it is so incredibly sharp, fast to focus, and is ideal for portraits and low light photography. My only knock would be the focal length is a bit limiting in small spaces, but for outdoors portraits it is awesome. A must have for any photographer looking to improve his or her portrait work.

Best portrait lens for Olympus

Kind of special lens with a good focal lens for headshots - If you use it for other portraits it that is almost a bit to long and makes communication difficult and reduces rapport. Very well build - but focus is not so fast.

Great Portrait Lens for headshots

Purchased this during the winter discounts.  I use it on my Olympus emd5 II.  I use it for portraits of friends, babies, and pets.  It has become one of my favorite lenses!

My New Favorite Lens!

Despite not being my most used lens, this is certainly my favorite. I always make excuses to use it because of the absolutely gorgeous rendering the lens imparts on scenes. The color is perfect, the out of focus areas smooth, and the sharpness that of a razor's edge. Seriously, on any of the cameras with a 'hi-res' mode, the detail you can get out of this lens straight from f/1.8 is really astounding.

I make excuses to shoot with this lens

I can not add anything new. This is a magnificent lens with unprecedented optical characteristics. It is sharp with an open diaphragm. They are almost free of chromatic aberrations. It is compact. It is beautiful. It's fast. It beautifully blurs the background on the photo. But with all this, it's some features that should be taken into account when you acquire it. The ratio of the focal length, the background and the aperture leads sometimes to the feeling that the subject is pasted into the frame, the side does not progress in the picture - it is immediately maximum. The focal length of 75mm - imposes its limitations on working with the model and at work in small enclosed spaces. In any case, this means only one thing - this lens is beautiful and so perfect and has such a huge potential in creating deep and beautiful photos that in order to master it you need to be a real master!

Optical precision instrument.

Simply put, if you’re on the fence about this lens... buy it. I put this one off for a while because I already the excellent Oly 45 1.8. I knew this would be a bit of a specialty lens for things like chorus/theatre performances, occasional portraits, and maybe indoor sports at some point in the future. I’ve only had it a couple of weeks and I can say I love it. It just feels like such a quality lens and is not unlike the Oly PRO zooms in terms of being a solid feeling, metal, beautifully finished lens with a nice quality focus ring. Focusing is fast and accurate, like all Oly premium lenses I’ve used, and the sharpness and bokeh are wonderful. The closest lens I can compare it to is my Canon EF 85L II in terms of sharpness and subject separation (although it’s FOV is closer to the 135L that I’ve never used). That’s saying a lot, since the 85L II is one of my absolute favorite lenses of all time, and that certainly puts this Oly 75 in that same category. Those who say you can’t get shallow DOF and great subject separation on MFT cameras have obviously never shot with this lens. It can produce some beautiful images that compete with the best from any system. For this price it should have come with a hood, but that’s basically my only complaint. The lens itself is flawless in build and performance. I can’t wait to get out and shoot with it more.

One of the best short tele primes I’ve used on any system!

By far this is the best lens I have ever owned. Quality optics with beautiful rendering and micro contrast. A must have for any m4/3 user.

Best prime lens you can own. Pro's include rendering, micro contrast, creamy bokeh, sharpness. Cons....there are none.

This is probably my favorite lens. If you like tight portraits in low light, this is one to have. Also great for concerts, pets and even landscapes. It's a nice size, and looks/feels stunning. IQ never disappoints. It's hard to beat.

Super low light lens

Been using this lens for six month now and it still impresses me every time with fast focus and unbelievable image quality and beautiful rich bokeh. This lens is at home in the studio or out in the field. The 75 focal length is great for portraits, commercial / advertising shoots and street photography. I also find a great landscape lens. As far as I am concerned this is one of the best lenses I have ever used in any format.

One the very best lenses in any format!

It sometime arrive that a new product is becoming a fetish item right from the start and it was effectively the case for the beloved Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm f/1.8, the "made in Japan" state of art optic for M4/3 format cameras. It is a purely indecent and expensive piece of glass that everybody want to touch, try and ... adopt if they can afford to pay for this majestic device. Carefully crafted the Olympus 75mm is also a beautiful collector jewel especially in its silver version. The short and fat design of the lens can be still assimilated as a compact design considering the fact it is a real telephoto with a fairly large maximum aperture. The focus is sumptuous and using it in conjunction of the Auto-focus/Manual option of the camera is a charm. When you turn manually the focus ring you will easily feel and ear the by-wire mecanisism of the lens coupled with a lighter turning resistance compare to some prime lens models. For my personal point of view I have seen it more as an avantage than an inconvenient. A short word about the lens hood The dedicated and factory lens hood of the Olympus 75mm F/1.8 is not part of the included accessories that come with the lens. In fact the Olympus policy regarding lens hood availability is not really clear. It seems that most of the "polymer-made" hood are included with the lens and the "metal-made" ones are optional accessories. For the Olympus 75mm lens, the gigantic metal lens hood (and expensive) has to be bought separately. Considering the hood large dimension it is really an occasional add-on accessory that will bother more than be practical. It's up to you to "invest" or not. With 16 degrees of (narrow!) angle of view the Olympus 75mm F/1.8 is the first real telephoto that will give you an equivalent three time magnification compare to your normal eye sight. Combined with its maximum aperture of F1.8 it can be a very discriminating lens considering its reduced deep of field. Because of its great selectivity the Olympus 75mm F1.8 is more an off-contextual lens than the others lenses doted with a wider angle of view. Perfect in doing portrait or such related subjects this small and fast telephoto can be also used in cultural (such in theatre or musical scene) and sport events. You may consider the Olympus 75mm F/1.8 as a true "project" lens that will ask a greater sense of study of your subject. In fact working with the optic will allow you to really discover different aspects of your subject. What to add more about that optical marvel from the Olympus M4/3 line-up except its outstanding performance. Yes this a superior optic even if it is a specialize piece of glass. But using the Olympus 75mm may transform you in an addict of this focal length with a narrow angle of view. I borrowed this lens at an event (with a Pen F) and I ended up buying an E-M10 II specifically to be able to use this lens. Yes, it is so good that I bought a camera FOR THE LENS! I have now had it for over a year and I can not say enough good things about the 75mm 1.8. It is INCREDIBLY sharp. It is very small and lightweight for the effective level of zoom. There is not likely another lens for any system that allows for the perfect combination of sharpness, speed, subtlety (it's fairly unassuming for the length), and intimacy that this lens provides. The portraits I get out of this lens are candid, effortless, and pretty consistently breath-taking. If you have a micro 4/3s camera of any brand, you MUST buy this lens. It seems overly specialized at first glance, but once you adjust to the length it is incomparable. I LOVE THIS LENS!

Probably the best micro-4/3s lens in existence

This lens is without a doubt one of the sharpest lenses for MFT. It is an amazing portrait lens for tight headshots that are razor sharp bringing out the eyes of the person being photographed. It is a also a great lens for street photography because it's wide aperture and shallow depth-of-field can isolate a person or small group of people against the urban landscape or any background. This lens is an absolute must.

Razor sharp subject isolation

The MFT chart of this lens speaks for itself for the most part, but there's definitely much more to this lens then the chart. Because the focal length is slightly greater than the traditional 135mm, the angle of view maybe little narrower for those who are accustomed to the 135mm angle. However, this lens compensates for such difference. In my opinion, the lens is simply the best prime lens in the MFT system, along with Leica DG 42.5mm Nocticron.

A must have for MFT portrait photographers!

I highly recommend this lens for portraiture or anything you need a 150mm 35mm equivalent focal length. However, do yourself a favor and get it with the Portrait Lens Kit. You not only get the 45mm 1.8, you get really nice lens hoods for each. This lens is razor sharp, fast at 1.8, and produces a nice shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh! The build quality is fantastic - it is solid and the focusing ring is smooth. The only thing more I could ask for is the weather sealing that they have on the Pro lenses, but otherwise this lens is perfect!

A great addition

The metal exterior makes it prone to breakage, for the clumsy people out there! Very sharp image quality, my favourite lens to use. Not too heavy and is at a comfortable size, despite the exterior. Focus is instantaneous, which makes for quick snaps!

This lens is a must for shooting portraits. It's perfect to create a creamy bokeh around your subject. It's fast and reliable. It's perfect to capture candid shots from afar.

Superb Bokeh!

This lens is an absolute beast. The bokeh is buttery smooth, the colors pop, and f1.8 aperture makes it easy to shoot in all conditions. Only thing to keep in mind is the shortest focal distance is a little long - would be nice to use this lens to photograph just the eyes but alas that is too close. This is the lens that stays on my camera most of the time. The Olympus 45mm f1.8 is a nice enough lens but doesn't come even close. The only lens that comes close is the Pana Leica 42.5mm f1.2, but that lens costs several times more.

Phenomenal Lens

This lens is amazing. Although large for an m43 prime, it's still astonishingly compact for a 150mm equivalent lens. Compare it to a full frame long prime and it's no contest. On top of that, it's blisteringly sharp starting from f/1.8, and is actually one of my fastest focusing lenses. One of the best things about this lens is it's rendering. Can't quite put a finger on it, but images captured with this lens have a magical pop to them, rich colors, excellent contrast, very smooth bokeh. With the 2x multiplication at f/1.8, it allows for just the right amount of depth of field for portraits while allowing plenty of creative control that you simply can't get with a variable aperture zoom that is typically at f/4 or higher at that focal length. I often go out with a wider prime and just this lens, and I'm covered with a very minimal, high quality kit. Highly recommended!

An absolute masterpiece

This lens is, by far, the most impressive lens in my arsenal! Just looking at it, with it's massive front element, you can see the potential of light gathering. It's aluminum housing and it's noticeable weight give it a solid, quality feel, and he focus ring in butter smooth Though this lens makes an excellent portrait lens, I have found that, with an Automatic Macro Extension tube, it takes impressive macros. Low light shooting is sweet, and I have used it at many events to capture so many keepers that it is hard to choose between them. If you need a low light lens, and love to isolate your subject with incredible background Bokeh, look no further than this lens.

Impressive

Sometimes you only understand how valuable things are when they are gone. My 75 mm 1.8 got stolen when moved to a new place. I needed urgent replacement for my favorite portrait lens and bought it again. This lens is awesome for close ups, and less for group portraits - with 150 mm eq you would be at yelling distance. Focus tends to be fast - I observed focus hunting in low light situations.

Dream lens

I finally purchased this jewel of a lens and I can only second all the previous rave reviews. The lens is sharp wide open with a nice bokeh. The compact size and low weight makes it a prefect fit in my m4/3 lens collection which includes the 12, 17, 45 and 60 macro. This is also one of the lenses that will challenge me to be more creative in my photography.
