Love this camera!

I bought this as a compact camera for hiking and travel. Now I find I never use my Nikon D750. The images from the Olympus compare very well with the much larger heavier Nikon. The M1 is now my go to camera

Powerful photography tool

I chose Olympus OM-D E-M1 over Fujifilm X-T1 although I really like dials placement and functions on X-T1. Olympus is smaller, both camera and lenses, and this was primary decision factor. Dials and buttons are really easy to customize. E-M1 is extremely powerful photography tool and I really enjoy it. Going to buy some prime lenses for it soon.

Excellent Micro 4/3 camera

A great camera! Switched from the 620 to OMD.. and all I can say is OMG! Light weight, a great hand grip to stabilize the already 5 axis camera. It is more than I ever dreamed could be built into a camera. Great fun features like the live composite and time lapse. I am still exploring all of the wonderful features it has, and i have had it for 2 years!

A Rugged Camera and a Capable System

The OM-D E-M1 is a brilliant camera and can be summed up, in my opinion, with a few well chosen words: compact, rugged, capable. Having owned cameras from a number of manufacturers over the years, I keep coming back to Olympus for their lightweight, compact dimensions and rugged reliability. Add to that a flexible, intuitive interface and excellent image quality and you really have a winning package. For me, the OM-D E-M1 has all of that and more. Shooting in Canada’s north country, I routinely carry my equipment over kilometres of trail in temperatures a low as minus thirty or forty degrees Celsius. I have owned four different Olympus digital cameras and have never had a problem with any of them, and the OM-D E-M1 is especially rugged. Its solid build instills confidence, while the micro four-thirds system allows me to carry a full range of lenses without breaking my back. The weight difference between the OM-D E-M1 and a couple of lenses compared to an APS-C unit I also own, is significant. With the E-M1, I can enjoy the hike make great photos and carry extras that I’d have to leave behind with the other system. All in all, I couldn't be happier with this camera and its lens system. Easily a five star product!

Rugged, compact, powerful

Great, rugged photo machine. I have been using this for over 2 years and don't regret switching to the micro 4/3 system. Great for landscapes!

A Great Replacement For Larger DSLR's

Traded up to this camera after using a APS-C DSLR for many years. I just got tired of lugging around all that weight! For the most part, I have been very happy with the switch. Camera is pretty fast, the lenses are half the size but just as good as their larger friends. I only wish the focus speeds were a bit better, but that was worth the trade off!

Top Notch Quality Camera and Lenses.

Having spent most of my adult life using om1's and om1n's and even a trusty om10 (my first slr), I knew I liked the size of that camera. I had my foray into digital photography with a wonderful 4/3 camera with a terrific Leica branded lens. However the size of the OM-D em-1 was very appealing, and the icing on the cake was the Zuiko Pro lenses designed to be used with it. When I saw the f1.8 8mm fisheye lens, I had to have it, and that clinched the em-1 decision! The 7mm-14mm was also a must-have. Needless to say I'm a big wide-angle photo fan. 12-40mm was next on the list, and it was time to study this remarkable, and very complex camera. Well, that's still a work in progress as there are many custom options and many menus to memorize. Much to chew on! Of course a camera is only as good as the lenses put in front of it, and that's where Olympus shines. The quality of the new Pro lenses is palpable, and being dust/moisture-proof is a big plus. And the f1.8 8mm fisheye that drew me in from the get-go? Terrific piece of glass. Olympus deserves an award based on that lens alone. I'll have loads of fun with it. Like an old girlfriend, I'll never stop loving my OM-1n, however this em-1 brings the same emotion into the 21st century for me, and for that, Olympus, I am most grateful. Well done.

A powerful, high quality camera

After using the E-M10 (which I loved) for 18 months, I switched to the E-M1 because I needed a camera that was splash-proof and freeze-proof. Well, I absolutely adore the E-M1! Even though it’s a bit heavier and bulkier than the E-M10, its size and weight are still very reasonable. The image quality is superb, and it has quite a few nice features (like focus stacking). I am more than satisfied with this camera.

Yes the Flagship

I recently purchased the E- M1 wanting a second camera to go with my E-M10 Mk II, while they are both great and featured packed the E-M1 is really the top of the line. I can see why it's the choice of professionals. Everything is just a customize-able button away, setup is easy and every condition can be met for any shooting style. My camera came native with firmware 4.1 so it's the latest and greatest just behind the EM1 MKII without the wait or more expense. Quality is top notch as in all Olympus products I've owned The full weather resistance was a key feature to get a second/ third Olympus. I've always been an Olympus user going back to my full size VHS camcorder and 5MP C5050Z. I currently also own the TG-4 so needless to say the Olympus brand has given me everything I wanted and needed in video and still photography. With a new grand daughter on the way I'll have the finest equipment to capture my newest loving addition to my family.

Loving my new Olympus D-EM1

I received my M1 about 10 days and loving the ease of operation and the many controls I have available to me. The resulting photos are sharp and I have received many compliments on the shots that I have posted on Facebook from my friends and family. I'm using the 12-40 F2.8 lens and also the 9-18 F4-5.6 lens with this camera and I'm getting specular shots--both wide angle shots and macro shots. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a light-weight professional camera.

Worth the money if you have older 43rds lenses

Camera is excellent. Missing one star due to camera lever failing and CAF+back button focus+RLS priority issues. AF could be better, but works better than anything else in the range for the older 43rds lenses.

Great little camera, impressive results and performance

I've been looking at this camera for a month or more, trying to decide whether it was worth investing in a new system. I'm a working pro and shoot a Nikon D3. I love the Nikon and the images I get from it but it is a big, heavy camera. Add the 70-200 f2.8 zoom lens on it and it is a big package. So, I considered the Olympus OM-D, EM-1 and finally took the plunge when the price for the body and lens came down a bit. So, although I've only used the Olympus a couple of times I've been shooting professionally and personally long enough (40-plus years) to recognize how capable a tool it is. Solidly-built, pro features, a quality lens (12-40 f2.8) add up to a great camera. My only qualm, not a complaint mind you, is how small it is. While that is an advantage when you're shooting for several hours, with the 12-40mm lens on it, the camera seems a bit nose-heavy. Also, it has a nice, comfortable grip but I have large hands and they swallow the little EM-1. I think that will be solved when I add the Olympus battery pack grip. Then it will handle more like my D3 but will weigh considerably less. Check out the OM-D EM-1, it can produce great images and excellent video. I'm a believer, well-done Olympus.

Could not be happier!

I started out with an OM-10, then went to an OM-1, OM-2n, and finally an OM-4Ti. I fought the switch to digital for years. I finally, reluctantly, decided that I would make the switch. The cost of film and developing has gotten to the point where it is cost prohibitive. Digital photography has also improved a lot over the years. I decided to try the OM-D E-M1 and I could not be happier. I can use all of my old lenses, as well as some new digital ones that I have bought. The pictures this camera produces are only limited by my ability. I am an amateur, and there is a learning curve. I was taking decent pictures within minutes, but it has taken several months to become very comfortable with it. I can see it taking a very long time for me to master it, and I look forward to every minute!

Build/Quality/Size

one of the best camera i have ever had... weather sealed, gorgeously made Phase detection works very well with those 4/3 lens for the HLD-7 grip, I don't think is needed as the grip on the E-M1 is already very good, as long as you pack a some extra batteries with you, it should last you long enough. However, this is only my personal preference. this is a well balanced camera with quality(image) and size, highly recommended.

Light system that packs a punch.

Perfect for what I do. Mainly portraiture and fine art, I needed a lighter camera system that could still pack the punch and power to take beautiful photographs. And this camera does just that. Love the customization options available and the ease of navigating through menu systems. Fast, quiet (even more quite in silent mode!), love this simulated OVF as well as the electronic viewfinder. Personally I am not to fond of electronic viewfinders as they just seem like tiny tv screens, but the om-d em-1 viewfinder doesn't hurt my eyes even with extended use. The only complaint I really have is about the noise at higher ISO levels, it can make photographing inside in low light quite difficult without flash, even with a f/1.8 lens. Other than that though, I take it everywhere with me. Love the micro 4/3 system.

Fits my needs very well

I am enjoying using the E-M1 very much. The camera's image stability, compact size, and lenses help to produce great images. Function buttons help to access needed features quickly. These are the features I enjoy: Focus peaking (great for macro), HDR, Bracketing for many camera settings, Touch screen (touch to focus on any point and take picture, Live view is great to see your exposure before the image to taken, Tilt screen, etc. Will produce professional images. Live view is a great help, it even offers depth of field previewing. The auto-focus is very good and quick, but the type of auto-focus being used works best in good light and is not optimal for fast moving objects like birds in flight. Most of the published reviews of this camera point this out. I moved from a Canon 60D to the E-M1 for birding, so I miss the better in flight auto-focus. But the other features of the camera outway this. Because of the built-in image stability and the 2x crop factor I can now work with a 600mm lens with IS for one fourth of the cost of Canon. With lenses with IS it can produce a 6x stop increase! If anyone complains about this camera it would appear they did not research their purchase. There is no camera that does everything for this price. The E-M1 did what I needed and did it well.

Superb camera. Fantastic customer support and free, valuable software upgrades.

The OMD EM-1: There is no substitute! I've enjoyed all my Olympus analog and digital cameras, but this one takes the cake. You'll know you've picked a winner the moment you hold it in your hands: it feels solid and fits like a glove. Highly recommended without reservation (Irresponsible, overly emotional reviews by the odd outlier angry customer notwithstanding). Check out the overwhelmingly positive professional reviews.

Don't waste your money with Olympus...no quality control and does not care about their customers

I originally purchased the E-M1 because of the great reviews and it had much of the manual custom features I was looking for. I liked the whole MFT lens ecosystem. However it turns out that Olympus has very poor quality, and they can't seem to fix their products when sent in for repair. Instead they will send you back a camera three times with the same issue. And then tell you it's not their problem. This is the fourth olympus camera that I've owned over the past 20 years. Three digital and one film. All the digitals have had some sort of issue, either from the factory or soon after the warrantee expired. I'm not rough on my equipment. Most of it looks brand new, even after 3-4 years. On this last one (EM-1) I even purchased an extended warrantee just in case. But now I have broken camera that has been attempted to be fixed 3 times. Pure junk. I have now learned my lesson. I'm going back to a quality camera company that cares about their customers.

Apparently Mirrorless means Useless

This is a great camera if you are not professional. If you do mainly sports or other action type work you are better off with some thing from Nikon or Canon. The auto focus is good but the continuous auto focus seems not to work (well). The biggest gripe I have with this camera is the buffering that happens when shooting in high rate after about 20 consecutive shots the camera with freeze, or pause between photos, really aggravating when you want to go all out for a 5 second action shot something a film camera can do FILM or even my iphone. Admittedly this is getting better with each firmware update but still, just shy of whats needs to play with the top dogs or be a flagship model. I am some what taken aback that olympus make the claim that they are putting "Hollywood in your hands". I live and work in Hollywood and can tell you that no this camera does not. Hollywood is 4k something this camera can't handle or Olympus is unwilling to unlock on the camera. I do not understand how Olympus can expect anyone to sink a grand into this camera and it not have 4k. MY CELL PHONE HAS 4K and can make calls. Now I'm not saying I want the camera to make calls but what I do want is the ability to shoot on what will be the next main format, 4k. My Go Pro does 4k why not this. On the matter of my Go pro, that also does 1080p at 60fps why can't this camera at least manage that. I would almost be willing to forgive the lack of 4k if Olympus was willing to give us some high Fps features, There is nothing "cinematic" about 24 fps or better. 60fps is objectively better and smoother. Battery life is kinda short on the camera and the grip with an extra battery is a must. If we compare the camera to the canon 70D which can do 60fps at 720p the camera feels lacking. The USB cable is just blatant making something proprietary for the sake of making more money when you loose or break the old one. Micro USB is the industry standard, get with the program especially if you are going to require the USB cable for firmware updates whats good on this camera: micro 3/4 lenses are dirt cheap wifi controls are neat

Worth much more than it's price... Excellent product!

After using this for more than a year, I am really happy that I made the right decision in going m43 with Olympus! The features that one gets with this camera is just crazy good, on top of excellent image quality. I know people that have made 16"x24" remarkable prints with the OMD E-M1 sensor. All in all, this is definitely a very sound and dependable system that is here to stay.

This is a fantastic little, full-featured and highly advanced camera

This is a fantastic little, full-featured and highly advanced camera. Lots of features and menus but well worth taking the time to learn. Experienced photographers should have no problem coming up to speed with this camera. And with the right lens focus stacking is available. A pretty incredible technology. This camera represents the new leading edge of where camera's are going in the future.

Amazing Quality and Easy to Use!

I needed a new "everyday" kind of camera for anythkng from street photography to a trusty vacation companion. This camera surpassed my expectations, capturing crisp, vibrant images in just about any lighting condition without a need for a flash. Another great thing about this body is that I can also take it into the studio. I give it two thumbs up and recommend it to photographers at all levels. Only slight con is that the interface can be a tad slow when powering on for an instant shot, but the results outweigh that tiny mistep.

Highly Customizable, Very Capable

I upgraded to the OMD after burning out the screen on my dad's older E-Pl2 and decided it was time to get my own kit. I loved the customizability of the camera settings from the E-Pl2 and found that the OMD delivered in that area - and with much better image quality. The weather-sealing and 5-axis stabilization on the OMD is solid, though one thing I'd advise for extended shooting or with larger lenses like the 40-150 PRO is the HLD-7. Having that extra grip and battery life really helps. Overall, an extremely solid camera. It does what you want it to out-of-the box, does even more if you want to customize it to your shooting style, and feels very balanced, no matter what lens you choose to mount on it. I would recommend it to any photographer looking to take their shooting to another level.

compact beast of a camera

This camera is the best machine in the mirrorless family. Ive gotten it soaked with salt and fresh water on my vacation in the Philippines. The image stablizer works perfectly, especially at night when i shoot free hand. I use it during the day and late at night and every shot is crystal clear. It has a sturdy feel when you hold it unlike other mirrorless cameras. Its lite weight and durable. Highly recommended if your are looking for a mirrorless camera.

Love this camera

I've been using this camera for going on three years and I absolutely love what it can do; I primarily use it for photographing birds. Being an advanced beginner, I know there are many features I don't use, but I'm getting used to new ones little by little and as I want more versatility and capability. The first camera got a good drenching in heavy rain (unfortunately) and has major corrosion; the battery is drained when "OFF"; when "on" and in sleep mode it completely functions perfectly. I HAD TO get a replacement camera; I got the same model because I don't want to deal with a high learning curve and it suits me very well. I like the size and fit in my hand. The old one will serve as a spare and use by less experienced family members.

FEATURED REVIEWS

Great Balance of Size and Performance

By Douglas V.

I have a Canon 5D MkIII and an assortment of L lenses but found myself often not wanting to lug them around for "fun" shooting. I was never happy with a small camera until the OM-D E-M5, which was the first that could produce images I was truly happy with. I jumped on the E-M1 and 12-40mm lens as soon as I could get my hands on them, and I'm not disappointed. Even though slightly larger than the E-M5, it's still half the weight of my Canon. For 8x10 images, or even a bit larger, I think y...

2013's best Micro Four Thirds camera

By STEVE F.

What a great camera! There are many many positive reviews on the Internet. All I can say is: they are all true. This is an impressive camera. I do semi-pro and personal photography work, and owned many Nikon D/SLR's, currently a D800E. But since I started using MFT cameras (Panasonic G1X, Olympus E-M5, now Olympus E-M1), I found I used my D800E less and less. The MFT system and lenses are great, much lower price, much smaller, and in excellent quality. Before E-M1 came out, I had to fa...

OLYMPUS E-M1 Mirrorless Micro 4/3 BODY ONLY - SILVER

It’s a lot to expect of a camera body: time lapse sequences, 5-axis image stabilization, over a dozen art filters, tethered shooting capabilities and more all in one mirrorless body. But the OLYMPUS E-M1 Mirrorless Micro 4/3 BODY ONLY - SILVER pulls it off in award-winning, flagship-camera style. Here’s how:

Product Highlights

  • The TruePic VII image processor and Live MOS sensor offer plenty of processing power to ensure that every photograph is consistent, beautiful and sharp.
  • A veritable suite of in-camera activities allow you to handle Live Composite mode, which means you can preview even extended exposure shots.
  • Tethered shooting is now enabled with the included 2.0-version firmware, and the free Olympus Capture software allows you to take pictures with your Olympus E-M1 digital camera remotely, even while sitting at your computer.

There is a lot that goes into making a product as special as the Olympus E-M1 mirrorless camera—even more than we can list here—but the key is, Olympus did it, and it’s available in one package. The only question is: when are you going to secure this as your next go-to camera body?

Learn about the OLYMPUS E-M1 Mirrorless Micro 4/3 BODY ONLY - SILVER

Want a camera body that can do everything? Get yourself a genie. Want an award-winning camera body commonly regarded as one of the premier flagships in the entire camera body universe? Now that’s realistic. The OLYMPUS E-M1 Mirrorless Micro 4/3 BODY ONLY - SILVER might seem like something you can only wish for from Adorama —especially after you read all of its features. But once you see how it all works, you’ll wonder why you ever settled for anything less than the absolute perfect camera body. With the world’s first 5-axis image stabilization, in-camera trapezoidal distortion correction to make your architecture images look square and straight, premium image processing, enabled tethered shooting and much more, this Olympus E-M1 is more of a “brain” than a “body”.

Here’s what we mean when we say that this camera body is the real deal:

  • New workflow. The market demanded it and Olympus answered. This Olympus E-M1 is now equipped with a USB-tethered shooting capacity, which lets you integrate it seamlessly into the workflow of your professional studio—or, heck, it just lets you have a whole lot of fun. With the E-M1 connecting to a computer via a USB cable and the free Olympus Capture software handling the Live View on the computer monitor, you can basically take your shots remotely. To professionals, this is essential for doing business. For photography enthusiasts, it’s plain old good times.
  • Live creativity. Very rarely do you get to be this creative from immediately behind the lens. With the Olympus E-M1, however, you don’t have to relegate all of the creativity to pre or post-production - you can handle a lot of it live. For example, consider the ever-popular Live Composite mode, a tool that gives you previews of long exposures. You’ll never get tired of this, because it means you can catch future glimpses of what stars will look like if you set your camera out, or what a beautiful highway shot might be capable of.
  • 14 total art filters. Want to dominate social media? Then up your filter game. With two new art filters, the total is now 15. New Vintage, Partial Color and a host of unique filters will have your photographs upgraded from “stock photo” to “art” with the push of a few buttons. Of course, it doesn’t take the most discerning eye to know that a filter does not a photographer make—but with the Olympus E-M1, that gets pretty close to actually being the case.
  • Create time-lapse sequences. Okay, now we’re just exaggerating, right? No way a camera body can create time-lapse sequences! Well, the E-M1’s powerful movie features allow you to handle time-lapse sequences with a startling amount of simplicity and intuitiveness. In short, this camera allows you to become a director and an editor at the same time.
  • Take it underwater. As if the above features weren’t enough, there’s an optional underwater case, specially customized for the Olympus E-M1, which allows you to take it down to some 45 meters. If you want to document your scuba trip in the Caribbean, we can think of no better way.

Adorama is proud to offer digital cameras like the OLYMPUS E-M1 Mirrorless Micro 4/3 BODY ONLY - SILVER. Not only does it upgrade your photography simply by existing, it allows us to show you exactly what a camera body can do if it really puts its, well, mind, to it.

From the Manufacturer
The award-winning flagship Olympus OM-D E-M1, with the world's first 5-axis image stabilization, TruePic VII image processor and Live MOS sensor is now more iconic than ever before, with the introduction of new firmware Version 2.0, enabling tethered shooting, In-Camera Digital Shift and Live Composite, and much more, also now available in a sleek, classy silver body.

Professional Workflow
In response to market demand, the new Olympus OM-D E-M1, with firmware Version 2.0 is equipped with USB tethered shooting capabilities, ideal integration in the workflow for studio photographers, utilizing Olympus' new Olympus Capture studio tethering application. The E-M1 connects to a computer via a USB cable, and the free Olympus Capture software mirrors the camera's Live View on the computer monitor, enabling easier, stress-free collaboration and sharing with other parties involved in a photo shoot. The software also allows the photographer to operate the camera directly from the computer.

In-Camera Digital Shift
Using two dials, firmware Version 2.0 features in-camera Digital Shift, or Keystone Compensation, allowing you to correct the converging lines of trapezoidal distortion in Live View, without the need for a shift lens or post-processing. In combination with 5-axis Image Stabilization, Dual FAST AF and its dust, splash and freezeproof body, in-camera Digital Shift makes the Olympus OM-D E-M1 ideal for capturing images of buildings from a variety of angles, in virtually any condition.

In-Camera Creativity
New features, including the popular Live Composite Mode, previously introduced in the OM-D E-M10, expand the user's creative potential. Live Composite Mode is a tool that offers previews of long exposures in Live View, a perfect tool for anyone looking to easily capture light trails when shooting a star-filled sky, or shooting fireworks in flight.

Two new Art Filters, both with three types of finish, add to your creative options, with a total of 14 Art Filters. New Vintage and Partial Color, boost the potential for easy, artistic photos using on-camera effects. Vintage lends images a nostalgic charm, while Partial Color emphasizes a specific portion of the photograph, utilizing an intuitive color ring of 18 available color hues, leaving the remainder of the image black and white.

Designed with Detail
Inherited from the OM models of the film era, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is now available in a strikingly beautiful silver magnesium body with classy aluminum dials and controls.

Other New Features and Functionality
Other features for improved performance include improved EVF display time lag. The display time lag has been reduced to 16 msec when the frame rate has been set to high speed. New Photo Story themes "Zoom In/Out" and "Layout" have been added. The addition of a hold function has also made it possible to temporarily save a photo story while shooting, and complete it, later. Live Guide makes it possible to layer on multiple effects simultaneously.

Remote shooting features in the OI.Share App have been further advanced, with the addition of a self-timer sequential and interval shooting, allowing for rich variations in movement and expression. A new Scene Mode "Panning" allows you to set the optimal shutter speed automatically to match the movements of an object. "Shade" Art Effect inserts bands of shading on the left and right side of the image (or top and bottom) for a sense of wideness.

A new Movie Effect "Old Film" turns your videos into flickering images with noise, scratches and dust, for the vintage look of old movies shot on film.

Firmware Upgrade Availability
Firmware Version 2.0 is pre-installed on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 silver model. Existing OM-D E-M1 camera owners can also enjoy the features of this new firmware by upgrading their camera using Olympus Viewer software.
