Great to have two batteries. With the auto-shutter cable, makes the Olympus e-300 useful in many situations. Used it while travelling and did not run out of battery life. Great for macro and night-time photography. It is lightweight and makes the camera easy to hold steady. Haven't taken it off.

Beyond the 2nd battery, the hld-3 is the ONLY way to gain access to the remote shutter release pins which were on the body of the e-1, e-10 and e-20n. This makes the E-300 the last camera to support a contact closure remote shutter release, which is important if you are trying to capture lightning bolts or have more than one camera set to fire with a delay for motion capture. The new series (400/500/410/510) use a remote shutter release that is USB based, which makes it unpredictable when the exact shutter will fire due to the USB timing compared to the E300. If you use it for scientific purposes this is a must, plus you get the portrait shutter button, and of course double the battery life which seems to run forever and give you more notice when you are on empty with 2 batteries. Finally - the grip strap can be used with this attached to get a better hold on the camera, so it's much more than just a 2nd battery holder.

It gives the Evolt 300 a beefier feel and is easier to control the camera and at the same time extends your shooting time with the extra battery on board.

saves me a lot of worry when I'm shooting outdoors and I'm miles from any power source.

The EVOLT can accommodate the HLD-3 Battery Holder that holds one or two BLM-1 Li-Ion batteries. With two batteries, the EVOLT can capture almost double the number of images possible with only one battery.
The HLD-3 has a shutter release button located at its base to enable vertical shooting, a remote socket for use with the RM-CB1 Cable Release, and a standard tripod socket.
