Questions & Answers

Ibi H : 1) I see it comes with a battery but is there a battery charger? 2) please be clear: Yes need an adapter to have a protective filter and lens cap/? or NO does not need as the lens is protected in the design of the camera. 3) what is the optic zoom of this camera?CLAY P : 1) the battery is charged when the camera is plugged in using the provided cable. 2) The lens is recessed. If you want an additional safety layer, buy an adapter and cover. 3) I recommend the manufacturer's website, which states 4x optical zoom.JIM P : 1) There is no separate battery charger. The battery is charged by plugging the camera into a USB port or to a wall socket through an adapter. 2) There is a protective filter covering the lens of the camera in it's design. However, you can add a removable protective filter or a lens cap with an adapter. 3) The optical zoom of the camera is 4.5mm-18.0mm, or 4x.MICHAEL B : You can plug into your computer to charge as long as you have the cable any usb charger will work. Yes I use an adapter to use filters and a snap on cover as it does NOT have one designed into it. It is a wide angle 4x optical zoom. What I like the most is that from the time I hit the on button til I can shoot is just a second. I have carried this as my backpacking camera for two seasons now and I really use the heck out of it without any issues in over 15,000 images.ELIZABETH T : 1. It has a dedicated power supply which plugs into the camera and charges it. The battery does not need to be removed from the camera. You CAN remove the battery from the camera, so you could buy a spare, but it can only be charged inside the camera. I don't know if they make an external battery-goes-into-it charger. 2. No lens cap. You might be able to use an adapter. Since this is a "tough" camera I'm using it as-is, assuming it won't get scratched too easily. But anything you add will make the camera less slim. 3. 4x optical zoom. "Tough" and waterproof cameras tend not to have long zooms, because a long zoom will make the lens stick out of the camera, thus more easily damaged. This is my "walking around in dirty and wet places" camera, and for that I like it very much. I use a different camera when I need a long zoom.ROBERT H : 1) There is no battery charger. The battery is charged by an included USB cable (non-standard) connected to PC or AC with an included adapter. The battery stays in the camera and is charged through a port in either case. 2) A lens cap is not needed. There is glass in front of the lens. 3) The camera has a 4X optic zoom (25-100 35mm equivalent).
Shopper : Does the Olympus TG-4 need a lens cap or lens filter to protect it?CHRISTINA S : I ended up getting the 2 items attached here to keep mine protected. One of them came with a lens cap too.MICHAEL B : Yes it does. It should have come with it from the start but it does not. Shop well and save that lens.ERWIN D : it is recommended, you will need the Olympus CLA-T01 conversion lens adapter and the Olympus PRF-D40.5 PRO40.5mm clear protective filter. As the camera does´t have a protective mechanism to close the lens.ROBERT O : No, as a matter of fact there is no connection for a lens cap or filter.JORGE C : Only if you use any of the conversion lenses from olympus will you need a lens protector filter. It available from olympus. The camera by itself has the water proof glass in front of lens. Just use a pouch to store the camera to keep dust and grit away.DAVID L : Nope, not at all, btw my trip to Yellowstone was fabulous and well documented w the camera, every outdoorsman should have one!KIM M : It doesnt however if you purchase the accessory ring you will get a lens cap that will fit it. I would recommend doing that.ROBERT H : No, it is covered by glass.TED W : Always a prudent thing to do. I purchased a polarizer filter that came with a lens cap and keep the lens cap on the lens even when the filter is not attached.PHILIP A R : Had mine about a year and not needed either
Shopper : Hi, does the Olympus TG-4 come with a memory card or does that need to be purchased separately?ERWIN D : It does not include a memory card.ANDREW R : What's in the box: Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 Digital Camera Wrist Strap LI-92B Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery CB-USB8 USB Cable F-2AC AC Adapter Quick Start Guide CD-ROM with Instruction Manual and Olympus Viewer 3 Software Olympus 1 Year Limited Warranty

Overall good camera

I like this camera overall. I think some of the menu items are not intuitive and I don't like that there is no lense cover. The pictures I have taken are very nice and the upclose ones are impressive. Still haven't taken underwater pictures yet.

Just as expected

I spend 100 plus days a year kayaking and TG-4 has proven to be the perfect camera to catch action shots on the rivers.

Solid

I needed a last minute replacement when my Lumix TS-5 UW camera finally started to fail the day before our trip to Maui. The Lumix was a stellar performer for many years. I took a chance on the Olympus TG-4 based on the reviews and it certainly lives up the hype. It is a great point and shoot, but also has quite a bit of high end control functions. The macro feature is truly impressive, and I am considering adding the flash diffuser as well. On my recent trip to Maui my "keeper" rate of underwater images seemed lower than with the Lumix. But I chose the "HDR" underwater setting on the TG-4 and suspect it lowered the shutter speed, at least the shots were often blurred in the bouncy rough snorkeling environment. The good shots were superlative. I gave the camera a 4 based on this, but suspect that if I chose one of the other UW settings my results may have been better. The surface shots are very acceptable. As always, a bit of practice and learnng your camera's capabilities is advised. The build quality and handling is excellent. It also comes with a small power block and charging cord that is very compact for travel (a slightly larger independent battery charger is also available).

Great backcountry ski camera

Have been using the TG4 in British Columbia backcountry skiing - takes a snow licking and keeps on ticking - keep it in the holder on a backpack strap an taking more pics and videos than ever before under all types of extreme weather conditions. The ability to shoot raw makes up for the somewhat smaller sensor and the photos come out very nice!

Fabulous for snorkeling

I just replaced by TG-1 (which I loved) with the TG-4 and took it on a week-long snorkeling trip to Belize. I took 1200 photos and several movies, about half in JPEG only and half in JPEG + RAW. I love the ability to post-process with Raw, although I find the internal processing for the JPEG superior to my TG-1, with much less blue "tint" in the majority of my pictures even without adjustment. I LOVE THIS CAMERA!

Won't zoom without a hum. Lens rings falls off.

If it was not for crappy customer service, I would give this higher marks. Bottom line, if you can live with an anoying hum when you zoom, and the lens ring always dropping off, then it is above average camera. I bought it for fishing & skiing video, and both failed as soon as I zoomed and could not hear audio over the noise from zoom. I will pay 2x or 4x before trying to use this again. Call it bad marketing, they said hum was a feature when I called to fix. It's a throw away camera. I just hope I can give it away on eBay.

Initial impressions are favorable

I bought this camera for use underwater, and in conditions when I don't want to expose my Nikon D750 to heavy rain. The initial impressions are favorable. The camera is easy to use; has intuitive controls; and surprisingly good image quality. Low light performance exceeded my expectations.

Great vacation camera

The main reason I purchased this camera is that it will shoot in RAW. As a professional photographer, I wanted something that I could take on a family vacation, let my son shoot with at the beach, but not be horribly disappointed with the results. This camera lives up to the hype. We shot underwater n the ocean, in the pool, close-ups, night portraits, even stitched-in-camera panoramas. The built in features make it fun to play with. I ALMOST didn't miss my DSLR on vacation.

Superb device, but does have a couple of issues...

The build quality is magnificent. The images are more than I could expect from a <$400 camera, and the startup time is "immediate." The camera is small and relatively light. I also bought the macro ringlight that adapts onto the front of the camera, and highly recommend it to relocate strobe along the lens axis for closeup work. Otherwise-the camera's battery level readout in operating modes seems to be very deceptive; you apparently have much less remaining than is indicated. Once you hit the last "bar" in the indicator it's very close to time to swap batteries. I bought 2 extra batteries having read of other folks objecting to this same issue, and I'm glad I did. Battery life itself-no objections. Good for most of a day at a busy venue (zoo), with GPS on. GPS acquisition is slow and not even close to being in the same league as a cel phone, in spite of the fact that it (apparently) operates on the enhanced system. I understand that a lot of data is traded during bootup, but the GPS can take a few minutes to become active, and then some more minutes (my experience) to indicate within a hundred feet or less of my actual position. The digital zoom quality-as expected-is unfortunate. The optical zoom is remarkably good, particular in a camera at this price point. Glad I bought this unit for backpacking, hiking, and general wandering around (rough service applications)-the ergonomics and menu functionalities are wonderful (and I have very large hands). Definitely worth considering.

TG-4 - Two problems otherwise a good camera

I have owned the TG-4 about a week at this point. It seems to be a good little camera, especially the microscopic app, but I have discovered two apparent problems. First, when set to record both jpg and raw, it seems to record a separate image for both, but when downloaded into Lightroom only the raw is recognized. I wonder if there are truly two separate images or one image is processed for two purposes. When set to jpg only, all works well. Be careful, though, when exposing bright areas of the image - they seem to be easily "blown out". Second, the SD card spring mechanism which enables you to press on the card and then it "pops" out is malfunctioning. I can still extract the SD card using a too but it is time consuming to do so. Fortunately, the images can be downloaded easily using the supplied USB connecting cord so I do not have to remove the card in order to process the images on it.

Manual GPS Setting

This camera is great, but you have to manually turn GPS on and off. If you leave it on and turn off the camera, the GPS continues to drain the battery.

Solid camera and RAW format!

I wanted a rugged, waterproof camera AND I work from RAW originals so when I saw this camera, I knew I wanted it. Have only used it for one week, but so far has performed flawlessly above and below water. About the only things I would like to see would be (1) an included lens cap/replaceable UV filter to protect the lens; and a more easily understood and reliable WiFi connection to my phone and to be able to easily connect with someone else's phone. Immediately after set-up it worked fine, but subsequently can't make them connect.

Best Value For The Money

Bought for wet vacation with family. Best attributes: 50ft water proof. Excellent images with raw capture. WiFi for uploading. Can be controlled remotely using phone. Altitude and GPS plus depth reading. Cool microscope mode. Cons: Could use higher capacity battery but is on par with other manufactures.

Great little vacation camera. all the settings you need & easy to carry took it in the ocean, even dropped it twice. will it replace my Nikon DSLR no.

The Tough TG-4 is rugged enough to go anywhere, but its powerful imaging technology makes this camera the most versatile yet. Sophisticated features like RAW capture, nighttime Live Composite and the super-bright F2.0 wide-angle zoom lens create amazing images no matter how challenging the environment, while built-in Wi-Fi, fast GPS and the multifunction e.Compass help you to find, shoot and share your adventures like never before.

Create the ultimate rugged system!
Trick out your TG-4 with waterproof lenses and cases, including the Fisheye Converter for ultra-wide shots, the Tele Converter that extends the zoom to nearly 7x and an underwater housing for extra deep dives. The LED Light Guide provides even illumination for macro shots, while the Sport Holder attaches the TG-4 to your chest harness or backpack straps for dramatic point-of-view.

Rugged Technology
Whether you snorkel or surf, ride or ski, bike or hike or love to shoot outdoors, the TG-4 is up to the challenge. It's waterproof to depths of 50ft/15m and its rugged inner and outer chassis construction protects the lens assembly from force (crushproof to 220lbf/100kgf) and impact (shockproof to 7ft/2.1m). Plus, the TG-4 is freezeproof to 14deg.F/-10deg.C and dustproof, so there's never a reason to leave it at home.

Raw Power
TG-4 captures lifelike images with an unmatched combination of features. For the first time in a rugged compact camera, you can shoot in RAW for the highest possible resolution and maximum creative control. With Olympus' advanced 16 Megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor and the TruePic VII Image Processor, you will capture the smallest details and the brightest colors of every exciting moment.

Fast and Bright
Always be ready to shoot. TG-4's high-speed F2.0 wide-angle lens captures light fast and the lightning-quick FAST AF technology keeps the focus sharp. Nail blur-free shots as quick as the action happens and shoot crisp, detailed images with minimal noise in low light. Plus, the Aperture Priority Mode expands your focus range and shooting control for amazing results.

Advanced shooting modes
Up close. In the water. Under the stars. Advanced Shooting Modes are readily at your fingertips via the Mode Dial. Powerful Macro Modes shoot close, like the Microscope Control mode that provides 44.5x magnification from 1 centimeter away. Underwater Modes shoot crystal clear, including the Underwater HDR mode that uses composite technology to enhance light and shadow. Nighttime Live Composite mode automatically combines multiple images into a single photograph for stunning night scenes and star trails.

Action Hero
Outdoor photography is all about action! TG-4 is equipped with multiple options for capturing epic snowboard runs and mountain bike races, including Full HD 1080p video, High-Speed Movie (for slow-motion playback), Interval Shooting with customized start time, shot count and interval settings and Time Lapse Movie, which automatically combines your interval shots into a short film.
