Having just moved to Coastal North Carolina I wanted to have a small device to record the nature sounds as well as the sea. This takes up almost no space, and gives crisp, clean stereo whenever I need it.

Way too small and complicated to program.

The recorder is good enough for the price, but the battery enclosed in the package would not charge. Luckily, any standard AAA battery will work.

I had a slight problem with the shipping, but this was during the holiday so I understand. I saw reviews on how difficult the instructions were, but without reading I was surprised how easy this recording device was to use. I will be using this for photo journalism to get the facts correct, and this works great in my pocket. The last device I owned wasn't able to work correctly with my apple computer, but this works great. It is very user friendly as far as one switch recording, and hooks up to my mack without issues. I would recommend this for anyone that needs to get it right with the words that are spoken, and there is plenty of space for your needs (4gig total)

This is a very compact but clearly lighter duty recorder best reserved for occasional use. Construction is all plastic. There is no pause function as I have on my professional quality Olympus metal chassis DS-5000 recorder, that I have used daily for around 10 years, a total of 1500 hours.

Sized like a thicker pen, makes it easy to carry and operate. Push the button at the end of it and it will start. Stop the same way. The sound quality is fine, I record meetings and the quality is good enough. Love it.

I tried to do the initial setup and failed. The convoluted instructions printed with the product are in conflict with the instructions downloadable from the Olympus website. And neither one of them are correct. Couldn't even get to the menus for setting the date and time. I gave up and shipped it back.

I bought this to record memos to myself and the occasional phone call. I've used it once for a phone call (placing the microphone near my earpiece) and it worked ok--good enough so that I could re-listn to the call to see if I missed anything. If I had a smartphone, I doubt I'd have needed this, though for a long presentation it would certainly be better than the phone just so that I wouldn't be worried about running the battery down. That brings me to an important point. This recorder takes a AAA battery. It's shipped with a rechargeable Ni battery which must be charged before it can be used. I tried using a regular AAA alkaline battery and wasn't able to get it to turn on. So, I plugged it into my laptop with the rechargeable battery...selected "Ok" when the display said "Charge" and after a full charge I was able to go in and set the time/date, etc.

Incredibly useful, has couple of simple design and user interface issues that needs to be addressed. It's a fantastic product that I use everyday, this is the second one i bought. the first one's pocket clip broke off (the plastic and tiny metal hinges are too weak). When recharging, you have to be able to press "OK" after you insert the device to USB port to charge. That causes quite a bit of headaches if your USB receiver port is wrong side up, as it is on my laptops. They need to make it where it will charge as soon as it's inserted, without having to confirm.

Excellent sound for voice recording. Simple basic recording function. Long battery life. Menu could be challenging for new users not familiar with Olympus, but recording is just a one switch operation. Unbeatable quality at this price.

I have been an audio guy for more than forty years, and I own several Olympus recorders, from their basic ones to their high-end PCM models. No one does a better job on these than they do, not even Sony (and I own lots of Sony gear, too). More than a decade ago, Panasonic made the RR-US006 slim pocket recorder whose downfall was that it was an IC (integrated circuit) recorder and required their proprietary software to offload the files. But it was the only pocket recorder on the market, and I still have mine. I am sure I wasn't the only one to do this, but I hounded Olympus for years asking them to make a shirt-pocket recorder geared toward the professional who would carry it alongside their Cross pen and tablet stylus, and I can't believe that they actually did! There is nothing else to say except that it is as perfect as all of their other recorders are with the addition of being super practical for those of us who are constantly wanting to capture thoughts and ideas and even conversations (disclaimer: as long as it's legal in your state to do that). Having said all this, this is a more specialized recorder and may not have the kind of wide appeal that will encourage Olympus to carry it for very long, so if you are even remotely interested you should go ahead and get it just as I did.

I use this mainly for interviews, but for police officers, this is a great alternative to the discontinued Olympus DS-71 that had a remote switch. The top part of the recorder is about the size of the DS-71's remote switch. The slide switch on this makes it priceless for beginning a recording without having to look at it (a necessity if you are an officer working on patrol). It is compatible with the Olympus Sonority software. Just like higher end Olympus recorders, you can automatically load the files and sync the time when it is connected to your computer. The sound quality for speech is better than the Olympus ws-500. The Olympus VP-10 is not a recorder I would use to record music, but I also use an Olympus LS-14 for interviews. Most people could not tell the difference between the two when an interview is played back on a computer. Other than the slide switch for recording and the hold switch, the controls are a little difficult to navigate, because of the size. It is just part of having a recorder this compact. If you are familiar with Olympus menus, it is easy to learn. The speaker in here is basically so you can make sure you have a recording or to use when you cannot access a computer (No one can make a great speaker that small.) It is amazing for the price. I have been waiting a long time for a recorder as useful as the DS-71 for law enforcement purposes. This is it. Great Job Olympus!
