AliceMICHAEL K : It can record and records well but you need to a connection from the phone to the device if you want to record from a regular phone,radio shack has a simple an cheap device that you connect to the phone instead of the hand set and then you connect the hand set to that device and that device has a plug going to the recording device and it records well. bottom line the recording device has a place to plug in a mic.I am sure that they have something for a cell phone too but you will have to take the recording device and the cell phone to them.

Donna W : Is this comparable to WS-400S?ALICE W : Donna, unfortunately, I don't have the 400S, so I've nothing to compare the 600S to. HOWEVER.... I used my 600S while taking photos recently, and then I offloaded the MP3 files (I chose to use that recording mode) to my computer so that when I cataloged my photos, I would have accurate descriptions of them (especially animals in a zoo, and plants in a botanical garden.
I experimented with the device for about a half hour two times before I used it, and was satisfied that I understood the directions, etc.
While in this zoo, in addition to saving short comments of identification in my voice, I also recorded the conversation that the white-handed monkeys were having. All my comments were easily accessed in Windows Media playback, and the monkey's voices came across loud and clear.
I haven't done anything fancy, but thought that I would be able to best use the recorded messages if I had them on the computer, rather than having to continuously go to the device itself.
For me, my investment turned out to be a positive thing, as did the shipping (it came a couple of days earlier than I expected it).

AliceCLARK L : The WS-600S has the same function, just larger memory capacity than the 400S. The WS-600S has 2GB memory - the WS-400S has 1GB of memory. Both are excellent digital recorders.
