I wanted a prime in this range for portrait and distance photography. This one seemed to fit the bill, it fit my cameras and was slightly cheaper than the equivalent Olympus. I was pleasantly surprised how compact it is, light and small.

very sharp and fast, really versatile with 31 cm minimum distance and clear details it allows macro focusing as well as being a great portrait lens. The size is idea and totally useful for many situations indoors and out. Both auto and manual focusing work quite well and it has a quiet motor for videos.

Bought this lens for use indoors in low light situations. Tested it at the Chattanooga Aquarium and got outstanding results. Images were sharp and well lit without use of annoying flashes. This is also the sharpest lens that I currently own. Highly recommended.

Very compact for it's specs with great image quality. I combine it with the kit 12-60 lens on my Panasonic g85 for travelling when I need to shoot in low light or want a shallow depth of field.

takes really sharp photos and the bokeh effect is very smooth. this lens is stabilized so one can take photographs with the shutter set slow.

This is a great lens that I use whenever I can get away with it. It provides an excellent angle of view with no detectable distortion. It is a fast lens with the ability to produce creamy bokeh. It is my "go-to" lens for 90% of my projects.

Well some might not think so but I like it. Was using the Oly 12-50 and not getting good isolation from the background so I bought this lens Panny 42 1.7 and the oly 45. I was dissapointed that the Oly would not focus close and the Panny close focuses to .98 ft. Oly no lens hood or bag Panny includes both, lens hood reverses and clips on for storage. The oly was smaller in diameter and of course the reversed Panny hood makes it wider than just the lens but of course could be left at home if compact size of your kit were really important.. I did not do any scientific test but both lens are sharp enough for good portrait work. Probably would have been a good idea to compare sharpness of both for distant objects but I did not do that. The panny has stabization but the Oly did not. I do not have a camera that uses lens stabilization but expect to have one in the near future so that is another plus for this purchaser. If I were to comment on the lens appearance, the Oly was retro metal rangefinderish and the Panny is minimalist modern engineering plastic noir if that makes sense to anyone besides me. I am very satisfied with this purchase and Adorama is a reliable merchant with quick shipping and an honest return policy.

Very sharp, even wide open. Though it isn't hard to stop down to f/ 2 for sharpness reasons. The quick autofocus makes it perfect for candid portraiture. Definitely recommended.

Bought two of these lenses. Fast and sharp with great value. These round out my prime lense set in this class. Have 15mm through the 42.5 and at the same F stop all three Gh4's match nicely.

This lens was the first I purchased almost immediately after I purchased the G7, and it was well worth it. The sharpness and contrast, as evidenced by the samples, is excellent--probably more than the sensor can even render at 16MP. The stabilization works for AT LEAST 2 stops, but I wouldn't go below 1/25 second exposure, at which I was still getting sharp shots. Video is where stabilization really shines, having minimal stuttering while recording. It focuses very fast, which goes without saying. The barrel is surprisingly good quality with a smooth (albeit by wire) focusing ring. The included reversible lens hood and pouch definitely make it a staple in anyone's set. Did I mention it's basically a macro lens?

Love the results I get using this lense. Solid bokeh and aperture for a m43. The accessory kit is pretty nice. UV filter and lense cleaning kit are of good quality. I really don't have much use for the remainder of the accessories.

I got this to have a portrait lens for my Panasonic GX7, and I've been happy with the early results. It's a light and compact lens compared to one or more of the pricier alternatives out there, and I'm glad it's not any heavier or bulkier than it is, since after only using the Panasonic 20mm lens on my GX7 for the past couple of years, even this lens noticeably shifts the camera's balance and center of gravity. I know I've just been spoiled by using the 20mm pancake all the time. In a totally silent room, with this lens I can hear a very quiet, steady "whirring" sound to go along with some intermittent beeps, whereas my 20mm lens is totally silent. Perhaps it's due to the OIS in this 42.5mm lens, which the 20mm doesn't have. In normal shooting situations, though, I haven't noticed the noise. I am glad to have OIS in this lens, since the GX7's in-body image stabilization only works with still shooting, not video; it'll be nice to be able to have image-stabilized video using this lens.

I have been using the Oly OmdEM5 for about a year, satisfied with the focusing but had thought that throwing a background out of focus was not attainable with M4/3. I decided to try the Panasonic 42.5 mm lens. It has enough reach and wide enough aperture to make creative use of depth of field. I am very impressed with the sharpness of the lens that I got, also I appreciate getting a lens hood and bag with the lens. Took photos at an xmas party just casual get in here and lets get a snap, the oly face and eye detection is superb with this lens and I fooled around with aperatures from 1.7 to f4 with a big group that might have faces in different planes. Never missed getting what was important into focus and could throw the background out. Found the out of focus areas pleasing to my eye. I was using the little camera flash and a slave bounced from the ceilings and it all worked well but took a bit of set up before bringing the partiers into the shooting area. Things I like about this lens: 1. close focus to .31 meter 2. included lens hood and storage bag 3 seems to be flare resistant 4.sharp across the frame 5 silent focus 6 internal focusing 7, metal lens mount that does not grind when attaching Dislikes so far and I have just started with it. 1 nothing It has some plastic in construction but is lightweight and appears to exhibit quality construction. 2 my camera cannot take advantage of OIS in lens and body it is either or, Oly 5 axis works great so that is just a nit pic.

Lens seems fine but the "decorating" ring which is necessary to use the OEM supplied lens shade was missing.

I used this lens recently at an outdoor event, and around dusk it was still recording images superbly. Now, since it's a 85mm in a sense, make sure you have enough space to back up or that you are shooting tight, otherwise you will back-focus. It is especially necessary to watch if you are coming from a shorter-focusing lens such as the kit or a 50mm. A must buy though for the right needs.

I bought this lens for travel and candid portraits and use it with a Panasonic GM5 camera. This combination is very compact and performs very well for my intended purposes. I keep the supplied lens hood attached (either forward or reversed), and the supplied lens cap is easily accessed (I don't degrade the lens performance by using a "protection" filter). All in all, the lens fulfills the m3/4 promise of small and high performance.

I was really excited when I saw the annoucement of this lens. Finally some competition to Olympus's 45mm 1.8 lens but with an huge added bonus, Image Stabilization! This was a surprise as this has similar features to Panasonic's most expensive lens, the 42.5mm F1.2 O.I.S but for 1/4 of the price. I really wanted to see how this compares to both the Olympus 45mm 1.8 and the expensive F1.2 from Panasonic so I set up some tests and was VERY impressed. This lens is slightly sharper in the center and quite a bit sharper in the corners compared to the Olympus at the same price while also including O.I.S. They F1.2 is sharper but not by that much and only visible when pixel peeping. Another big surprise was the minimum focusing distance. This is getting close to being a macro lens, much closer that you can get with the Olympus 45mm 1.8 or Panasonic's F1.2. I would strongly suggest this lens if you need something in the focal length. If you want to see my testing you can look up Max Yuryev 42.5mm on Youtube and you'll find my detailed comparison along with downloads to check out raw images comparison images/video for yourself. Pick this lens up you won't be disappointed!

This is absolutely great portrait and low light lens. It is a really great addition to several Panasonic zooms that I own. The lens is great for portraits, gives nice bokeh and wonderful separation of the subject and background. Very nice and fast focusing in difficult lighting conditions. I have been wanting this lens ever since I saw a demo unit at WPPI in Vegas this year. I love it.
