I rented this lens some years back to photograph a wedding. It was good then. I finally bought it this year. My copy is even nicer than the one I rented. The thing is so sharp I get moire patterns all over the photo at f/1.2 (on a non-AA sensor), and it renders people and faces really well. I also discovered it photographs flowers well, but that's not as important.

A true Leica lens, it is beefy, solid, and sharp. It is my go to lenses for portraits.

Stunning lens, takes great portraits, feels heavy but the weight is worth it!

This lens is a solid piece of glass, tack sharp with very beautiful bokeh. I would argue it is one of the best lenses in the m4/3 system. I use it on my Panasonic Lumix G9.

I found myself in need of a very fast lens for low light photography with my Panasonic G9. My everyday carry lens had been an Olympus 12-40mm F/2.8, but after attaching the Nocticron the 12-40mm has remained in the bag. This lens renders clear, sharp, natural colored images and fulfills its low light promise. It is costly but worth the price if you require a very fast lens. As an aside, I find that this 85mm FF equivalent lens works well for street photography to the extent that I have been using a Leica SL 75mm F/2 lens on my Panasonic S1R for the same purpose and no longer employ the 50mm focal length for street.

I use this for run and gun portrait shoots. Combined with GH5's video, I can pull out video and rotoscope them with ease, that's how good background separation is on this thing! It makes me look a lot better than I am. It was between this and the Olympus, and I am glad I got this. I didn't know how much shake can be in a camera when a model is staring right at you. A combination of nerves and slight muscle fatigue makes this lens a must have! I know the old credence, but trust me I am not a good photographer. I owe all of my success to the gear. The GH5 and this lens will make you a better photographer. Panasonic should offer a money back guarantee on that! That's how serious I am about this lens.

Not only is this lens a great performer in very low light conditions, it also does a great job in all sorts of lighting conditions. I find myself leaving it on the camera more than any other lens. If the subject is too close I just back away. It's a great lens.

This lens is tack sharp, even wide open. Images have vivid color, high contrast, superb bokeh, and excellent microcontrast. AF is accurate and fast on both of my GX7 and EM5 bodies. However, it is expensive, big, and heavy among M4/3 lenses. This is one of the best lens money can buy, include DSLR and rangefinder lenses.

Comparable to Canon f 1.2 85 mm L Eos lens, both in bulk and in sharpness. Reltively speaking. I had 1.8/85 mm EOS cos faster lens too heavy. This is not too heavy. Great resolution. Big lens, expensive lens, heavy lens, get one if you can.

Not much to say other than it's an amazingly beautiful optic that just renders amazing photos. A touch on the long side for micro 43, but I'm getting to like it. The combination of a "normal" focal length with the narrower field of view adds a pleasant character. I don't regret the purchase even though it's pricey. In fact, it's worth every penny and then some.

This is a stunning lens for mft. Outstanding sharpness, even at f1.2, outstanding bokeh, outstanding finish and hap tics -- not only the Leica brand but also the Leica build. Makes wonderful portraits in low natural light. Fast and completely reliable autofocus. Just the best lens I have (together with the Olympus 75mm)

Great portrait and boudoir capture glass. No distortion or fringe. Could almost have been APO. Very fast, snappy focus on an OM-D E-M1. Do need to set up the camera for the IS feature if used on an Oly. A joy to work with on the road and on location. Bad lens shade. Should have had a 35mm older Summicron design, or best, the 12-40mm Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO shade to lens mount, plastic/nylon, not metal. Shock passed unto the lens if hitting door frames, and glue bleeds.

This lens is solid and robust, and I love that it has the traditional leaf shutter that is so rarely found on digital lenses, and the optical quality is superb. I use this lens with my Pan Lumix GX7 and GH3, so I gain its full functionality. I initially hesitated about investing in it as I'm building my portrait business from scratch at the moment so it is important for me to get as much bang as possible for my buck. I'm extremely glad I did as it creates superb shallow dof portraits with wonderful buttery bokeh, and has provided me with far more options using natural light without raising the iso to the point where noise becomes noticeable. This is my go-to lens for portraits, alongside the Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 Leica DG Summilux Aspherical Lens for for full body shots.

Great build and imaging qualities (sharpness, contrast, bokeh). There is some vignetting in the corners, and well in from the corners shooting wide open. Corner sharpness is not perfect shooting wide open. It is pretty big and heavy for m4/3, but is about the same size as a mid-quality FF lens with the same field of view. I moved from an EF 100/2, but comparison with the more closely-matched 85/1.8 apply. The Nocticron is the same weight, and about the same dimensions (bit smaller diameter but slightly longer). It has a better build, adds stabilization, and performs better wide open.

Perfect m3/4 lens

This is a stunning lens for mft. Outstanding sharpness, even at f1.2, outstanding bokeh, outstanding finish and hap tics -- not only the Leica brand but also the Leica build. Makes wonderful portraits in low natural light. Fast and completely reliable autofocus. Just the best lens I have (together with the Olympus 75mm)
The Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH / POWER O.I.S Lens is suitable for the Lumix G based on the Micro Four Thirds System standard. (35 mm camera equivalent: 85 mm). The new lens system is comprised of 14 elements in 11 groups and uses two aspherical lenses, one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens. The aspherical lenses suppress spherical aberration and distortion. The ED lens enables sharp, high contrast description without color bleeding to the corners while the UHR lens enables high optical performance that renders an image with uniformed descriptiveness from center to edges as well as downsizing of the lens unit.
The popular 42.5 mm medium-telephoto focal distance (Equivalent to 85 mm on a 35 mm camera) is perfectly suited for portraits with rich stereoscopic effect. Together with the high-speed aperture, users can utilize the beautiful soft focus for more impressive, creative shots. Nine blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. It also captures landscape with an extremely natural perspective. In addition, the aperture ring on the lens barrel allows direct, intuitive control over aperture settings.
Panasonic's Nano Surface Coating technology has been adopted to the NOCTICRON 42.5mm / F1.2 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. Reflection is dramatically minimized at entire visual light range (380nm-780nm) by applying the extra-low refractive index coating with nano-sized structure on the surface of the lens. It results in a super clear image with dramatic reduction of ghost and flare.
Due to the shallow depth of field which is unique to the large aperture lens, even a slight handshake can potentially cause images to be out-of-focus. However, the POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which is integrated in the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm effectively compensates for not only small, fast movement but also large, slow movement, making it easy to capture super clear shots even when shooting in low-lit situations such as in night time or indoors.
It incorporates superior inner focus system, which enables excellent resolution and contrast from close-up to infinity. The inclusion of newly developed stepping motor makes the focusing action smooth and silent for use in both still and video recording. Notably the performance of Auto Focus is far superior to the phase-difference AF when a fast lens with smaller F value is used. When mounted on Lumix G cameras, users can take advantage of the high-speed, high-precision Contrast AF system.
