Questions & Answers

Mike K : Can someone confirm that this lens has no filter thread? Does the sun shade have a thread? Is the lens too curved to allow for a filter? Trying to determine if it can be used for IR photography.MICHAEL S : There are no filter threads because the lens is too curved for a filterJOHN H : The lens does not have filter threads and neither does the hood which is not removable. You might be able to use something like the Cokin filter system on the outside of the hood.FLOYD O : The lens does not have a filter thread. The Shade does not either. So a little extra care is needed when handling the lens to protect the glass. There is a company that makes a filter kit WonderPana 66 for this lens. The company name is: fotodioxpro You can google it. The price range is about $300 to $1200 depending on the kit you purchase. Not cheap but an option. I'm looking into the basic kit myself. Hope this help;s.BRIAN M : That's correct no threads on either. You could rig an oversize filter in front of the shade. If it were me, I'd try it first with just a big filter and some tape. If the results were OK, I'd make something more permanent.RICHARD F : There is no filter thread, and the sunshade does not have a three. 3rd party kit to adapt costs a few hundred $, IIRC. The front element is curved and sticks out too far to allow a traditional filter setup. There is a way to put a Panasonic filter adapter (for another Panasonic WA lens, I think the 8mm fisheye) on the back of the lens and use gel filters. I think the filter holder is about $40.MARTIN B : The lens has a built in small sunshade and no filter thread of any type. I doubt there is any straightforward way to mount a filter. On the other hand, I think its a great lens, and use it for outdoor scenes more than I would have guessed!DAVID R : There is no filter thread, and no thread on the sun shade. The sun shade seems to be fixed; I don't want to force it, and it doesn't seem to screw off. The front element of the lens is very rounded and protrudes past where the filter would normally attach.Christoph G : correct, the lens has no filter thread, neither does the shade, which is firmly attached to the lens. The front element is curved quite a bit, it comes out to the notches in the shade. Some people modified large Cokin filter holders or similar to slip over the lens shade. Since this post frowns on links: Google "Yes the Pany 7-14 can take filters! " and you see some guy's setup. Hope that helps, ChristophDOYUNG C : There is no thread in front of the lens that will allow you to attach a filter. The hood has no thread and the front lens cap is not threaded either - you just slide it on. It may be possible to place a filter between the lens and the camera but I haven't seen such a device yet.REID S : The lens DOES NOT have threads for filters.
Shopper : To use this lens on the OM-D m5, does it need an adapter? If so, which one? Thanks!JEREMY G : I assume that you mean the Olympus OM-D E-M5. No adapter required. The lens has a standard Micro Four Thirds mount. However, you may be interested to know that E-M5 users are seeing an issue of troublesome purple colored lens-flare phenomena using this lens on the E-M5 camera body inparticular. There have been several recent discussion threads on the DPReview Micro Four Thirds Talk Forum with actual recorded image examples posted, and discussions among competent and well informed E-M5 users. I would suggest that you investigate and read those discussion threads, as this does seem to be a troubling issue regarding this particular camera-lens combination.ARNOLD M : I have the OM-D m5, and my Panasonic 7-14 works fine on it without adapters. The m4/3 standard means that all lenses built to that standard work 100% with all cameras built to that standard (I can't say about power-zoom lenses).HEINRICH S : You don't need an adapter, the lens should work great on the OM D m5MATTHEW C : No adapter is needed to use this on any other m43 camera, including the OM-D. There is some chromatic aberration correction that Panasonic cameras do automatically for this camera that Olympus cameras do not, but that is easily done in post-processing software.MICHAEL S : No adapter needed. I own tis lens and the 14 to 140 lens and use them on the Panasonic GH2 but I saw that the 14 t0 140 works on the OM-D. I know when I bought the GH2 I was told that all the Olympus lenses for micro four thirds cameras work on it and visa versaJohn N : No adapter is needed to use this on the OM-D. This is a native micro 4/3 lens and works very well on my OM-D.PAUL A : No adapter is needed as this is a micro four thirds lens, on a micro four thirds camera.JAMES S : The Panasonic 7-14mm f/4 is a micro 4/3 mount lens and should work without an adapter on any micro 4/3 camera. I use a Panasonic DMC-GH2, but the lens should work fine on an Olympus OM-D-E-M5 with both auto-focus and f-stop. This lens does not have image stabilization and there are no external controls on the lens except for zoom and focus. Focus on my GH2 is quick and positive. One thing I am told is that Panasonic lens zoom control turns the opposite direction from Olympus lenses. To zoom from 7 to 14, you turn the lens ring to the right (clockwise) viewing from the back of the camera. The other thing to note is that this lens is NOT threaded for filters.FLOYD O : I believe all of Panasonic's lens fit your OM-D5 as it is the standard mount for Micro Four Thirds Lens. It should not require an adapter. Just to be safe I'd go to Panasonic's web site and send and contact their Support line. BTW, you will love this lens, it has a great wide angle of view, super sharp. Just keep the cap on when not in use or hanging from your shoulder to protect the front element.RICHARD F : No, it has the same mount as the Olympus micro four thirds lenses- they are interchangeable.JOHN H : The 7-14 is a native micro 4/3rds lens and does not need an adapter.MAZEN H : This lens can be used directly with an OM-D em5. It does not need an adapter.NEAL W : This is a great lens but I use it on G series.JASON A : The OM-D m5 is a native Micro 4/3 camera. This lens needs no adapter on the OM-D m5.Adam W : No adapter is needed for this lens. It is a native Micro 4/3 lens which will work on any Panasonic or Olympus m4/3 mount. Richard B : No - all Micro Four Thirds lenses work on all Micro Four Thirds bodies without an adapter (the mount is standard across brands).
James G : Has anyone used this lens with an Olympus OM-D?John N : I have used this a lot on my OM-D with fabulous results. I have read threads on some forums complaining about reflections and flare when strong light sources are included within or just outside the frame. My experience with a GX1 and now a G5, which were not scientific A/B comparisions, don't indicate any significant differences in how this lens performs on the OM-D compared to the GX1 and G5 Panasonics.John N : Yes - on both the OM-D and GX1. Works fine - including no aperture rattlesnake and no wake-from-sleep problems on my OM-D. @James G, did you have any specific concerns?STEVEN B : I have not used it with the Olympus, However it is my favorite lens for my Lumix GF1. My main purpose for buying this lens was for Architectural shots, both indoors and outdoors. I am a designer and like to document my work. The images are phenomenal, crisp edge to edge. I would definitely buy it again.NEAL W : I keep it on my Panasonic GX1 and love it. Wide angle is where it is at. Switched to 4/3's entirely and iPhone. Tired of carrying around my 5DII. Giving it to son in law. I've been a rangefinder guy since the '60'sDANIEL M : Nope. Have you looked at Thom Hogan’s website Sans Mirror? He might discuss this combination. Namaste DanielMARTIN B : Not me. Its a lot of fun on the Panasonic Lumix.

nice combination of performance and size

Still, after many years of use, I like the lens for its decent performance and small size. It beats the Olympus handsomely in size, and I never really missed the extra stop of light. It would be perfect if it were weather proof.

Outstanding Lens

I've had my eye on this lens for some time. I was debating between this lens and the Olympus 9-18. While the Olympus was cheaper, especially when on sale, I really wanted the extra width of the Panasonic and when it went on sale along with a $ gift card from Adorama, I decided to purchase the lens I really wanted. It's perfect for my intended use which is interior scenes and interesting landscape and architecture depth of field experimentation. Light weight, sharp, well built - I really love this lens!

does its job

does its job, using for architectural close-ups, no visible fisheye distortion, decent in low light Could improve if there was some easy way to put a protective filter over the lens.

Great Lens

Very sharp, great contrast, good build quality, relatively light. Also own the Olympus 9-18. This is a better lens albeit somewhat more expensive. Worth the extra money.

Love it!

I am new to Lumix after more than 40 years with Canon. This lens exceeds my expectations. It is sharp, crisp, and incredibly small and light weight. It stays on my camera more than any other lens. HIGHLY recommend!

Great Wide Angle for My GH4

I'm so glad that I bough this lens, its wide and pretty sharp at wide open where I try to use it. I've used it on my Panasonic GH2 and GH4 and it did not disappoint. Worth the bucks! Ross

Amazing Lens

This lens is super sharp, the colors are beautiful, and it is an especially useful zoom range for wide angles. The quality of the photographs it produces is truly first class, rivaling the German glass from my film days. It is not a heavy lens for the zoom capability it possesses. I use the optional lever from Panasonic for zooming, which does make it even easier to use. This lens has been trouble-free for me and the only negative is the inability to use filters as is.

Wow

Have had this lens for about a year, still love it, have always used ultra-wides as my standard lens as it is how I view life, and this lens has become my standard. Pros of course are the very wide to super wide angle of view, sharpness and at f/4.0 throughout the whole zoom range, relatively quick for what it is, a zoom, not a prime, ultra-wide angle lens. Also like the built-in hood, very smart. Cons would be that it is large though small for what it is, could be faster like f/2.8 but then it would probably be even more expensive, do wish the lens shade hood were removable and that you could screw filters in but this would have made it more expensive and even larger. It could also have had better weather sealing but ditto, more expensive and maybe larger and heavier. Use it with my equally marvelous Panasonic GX7 which is a great camera, everything in black, very pro looking. So far my dream combo! I'm thrilled today to have read that Panasonic is continuing their partnership with Leitz and hopefully Leica lenses. My last camera was a Panasonic LX5 with the 24mm f/2.0 Leica lens that is the sharpest optic I've ever had - great combination. Good work Panasonic and Leica!

This Is How I See Things.

Have been waiting for a lens like this for years and now I have it, on a Black Panasonic GMC LX7 - perfect combo for me. Love 24mm lenses and am very comfortable dealing with the stretch and curving that goes with them but always wanted something wider. Can honestly say that this 7mm maximum wide angle lens is almost too wide for me, that's a good problem to have! I like shooting in rooms and always need a super wide, likewise like doing selfies with groups or just my wife in restaurants and this lens is perfect. Any cons would be that the lens is large-ish so I can't slip this whole thing into my pocket. But am getting older and can't deal with tiny point-and-shoots with their equally tiny controls and settings. Nor do I want to manhandle a DSLR any more, too heavy and big. This setup, LX7 and the 7-14mm lens, is great for me. Another con might be the lack of waterproofing - was just in Yosemite hiking and it started raining so I worried about it. But just slipped the camera inside my jacket and everything was fine. The lens does not have stabilization built in, but now that's in the LX7 body, so check that off. The large bulging front element with sculpted sunshade and without the ability to add filters or use an expensive spring loaded lens cap, are also not problems for me. I have always been a "no filter" photographer, feel that the protection is unnecessary (have never broken or scratched a lens)and more glass just adds to image degradation and the chance of more off angle glare and flare. Great lens and can't wait to shoot more with it!

This is one of the sharpest lenses that I have used. It gives wonderful reditions of all scenes. I am using it 60% of the time that I am shooting. Well worth the price.

Fantastic

It's the widest lens you can buy for M4/3, to the extent you need to be careful and not include your shoes while taking pictures. There is a minimal amount of distortion, considering how wide it is, taking pictures leveled, trying to avoid steep angles, will really help. It's very expensive lens, but then... I think it's worth the money. One of my favorites for sure.

More purple flare on OM-D

The lens deserves a high rating, at least on Panasonic cameras, but on my OM-D I'm getting the same purple flare mentioned by others, even from overhead lights indoors; unfortunately, not a keeper (though should I eventually buy a Panasonic body I would buy this lens again).

Excellent Investment

I've been needing a wider angle lens than the 14-140 that lives on my GH-2. This lens isn't the cheapest, but it's well worth the price. It's extremely sharp and contrasty across zoom, f-stop and focus range; just what I need for interiors and wide nature shots. The only downside might be that with the domed front element there's no provision for filters, but after all, that's what Photoshop is for.

Great wide angle option for MFT

This is a great wide angle option for micro four thirds. It works great on my Olympus OM-D E-M5. It is on the large and heavy side for an MFT lens, but it's still very manageable and more compact than something comparable on APS or full frame. Compared to Olympus's entry in this same category (the 9-18), this is more expensive and larger but has better image quality, a built in hood, constant f/4 and a range that goes wider.

EXCELLENT WIDE ANGLE LENS

I am so glad I bought this lens! Perfect in every way. Sharp, fast, great angle of view. Solid construction. Great value. I have not removed his lens since it arrived. Just grabbed incredible shots of the fall colors up on Pikes Peak. All I can say is PERFECT! One minor point to note, since you can not use filters with this lens you will need to be careful not to damage or scratch the front surface. I keep the lens cap on at all times when I'm not shooting which means the cap is always in my shirt pocket ready to be put back on. Some felt it was pricey but not for a lens of this quality. I see that Panasonic has raised the suggested retail price to $1099, if you are looking for a great wide angle lens I suggest your grab this one before the price increases.

Great Glass.

Very glad I bought this lens. Requires careful deployment like all very wide-angles. Astonishingly compact for what it does for this format. No trouble to carry with other M4/3 lenses when walking distances or travelling. Only problems I see are the vulnerability of the front element and the fact that filters are not readily useable. Optically, it's very good. Max. aperture f4 in my opinion a good choice for focal length and size of lens.

Wide-Angle MFT lens? This is it.

This is a very nice lens - probably THE lens to have - if one wants to shoot wide-angle below the 14mm mark in the Micro Four Thirds system (the in-depth reviews on the web all seem to be pretty clear on that). It would have been nice to have it a little faster, though, for increased low light usability. Nevertheless, this lens can take outstanding, sharp pictures.

A good business!

I use it more than I'd think! It seems to be very expensive, but there's no comparison in therms of price, weight, portability with other bigger kinds of no-MFT..at the same performance!!! The lonely flaw: it's no possible to use with it any kind of filter..Adorama also made just a good work with price and rapidity!

Quality Little Fisheye!

I have used this in the Mountains and really like the lens overall. Wish it had a bigger aperture but very good image quality and not blurred on the corners of the frame like many fisheye lenses on the market. Good clean lens.

Great wide angle option for MFT

By Jeffrey S.

Are you looking to expand your photographic horizons with a high-quality, ultra-wide-angle lens The Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 Aspherical Lens for Micro Four Thirds is a remarkable tool for any photographer seeking to capture expansive landscapes, intricate architectural details, or spacious interior shots. This advanced lens offers a broad focal length range of 7-14mm, equivalent to 14-28mm on a 35mm camera, providing a versatile wide-angle zoom that is perfect for a variety of shooting scenarios.

Crafted with innovation in mind, the Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 lens boasts a compact and lightweight design, making it an ideal companion for on-the-go photography without compromising on performance. The lens's 114-degree angle of view allows for stunning compositions, enabling you to include more of the scene in your frame, even in tight indoor spaces where distance is limited.

The optical construction of this lens is nothing short of impressive, featuring 16 lens elements in 12 groups, including two aspherical lenses and four Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses. These elements work together to deliver sharp, high-resolution images across the entire frame, even at the widest angle. The constant f/4.0 aperture ensures consistent exposure settings throughout the zoom range, providing control over depth of field and enhancing low-light shooting capabilities.

Reliability is a key aspect of the Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 lens, with a durable metal mount that stands up to frequent use. The lens benefits from multi-coated elements that effectively reduce ghosting and lens flare, ensuring your images are clear and high-contrast. Additionally, the seven-blade circular aperture contributes to a pleasing bokeh effect, giving your photos a professional-quality look with smooth out-of-focus backgrounds.

When paired with a Lumix G Micro System Camera, this lens utilizes the advanced contrast Auto Focus (AF) system, which includes a Face Recognition function, to deliver a more convenient and enjoyable shooting experience. The included lens hood is thoughtfully designed to allow for shooting even in bright sunlight, making it a reliable choice for all lighting conditions.

Compatibility with a range of Lumix cameras, including the Lumix DC-GH5, DC-GX850, DC-G85, DC-G85K, DC-GX85, DC-GX8, DC-G7, DC-GF7K, DC-GM5K, and DC-GH4, ensures that you can integrate this lens seamlessly into your existing gear.

Whether you're a professional photographer or an enthusiast looking to broaden your creative capabilities, the Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 Aspherical Lens for Micro Four Thirds stands out as a durable, reliable, and innovative choice for capturing the world with a fresh, wide-angle perspective.
