Questions & Answers

Shopper : Just received 2 of these. how does the thing fit into the scanner?????SCOTT M : Mine slide into the grove. If I remember right, you have to load it from the very end and slide it into the groves.FREDERICK H : These trays work well with my PowerSlide 3650. I had a bit of trouble with the other trays that came with scanner. I also had a little difficulty trying to figure how these new trays worked with scanner. The slides enter the projector from the side with the larger cut out and the numbers on the tray run along the front of the scanner. The "feet" slide into the channel easily from the left side. Make sure you follow the directions that were sent to you about placing the orange pusher in the far out position of the slide. I have very few slide jams and then only when older slides have become bent. It is easy to dump slides out of this tray so hold upright! I have not tried to work with some of my old glass slides but I have been told that they also can work. I have already scanner about 2500 pictures and am so pleased to be able to share them with family and friends. Good luck.JON F : The universal 50 will only work one way. The numbers on the tray should be on the top outside, i.e. closest to the scaner controls, not on the side with the major components. The bottom of the tray needs to fit down into the 'groves' or tracks provided on the scanner. If looking at the scanner from the control side, tray number one should be the first to enter into the place where the scanner slide bar will be able to 'push' it into the scanner photo area. Hope this helps in case you haven't already figured it out. JonFRANKLIN H : The Universal Slide 50 tray has two groves on the bottom that nest on the two groves on the scanner. You push it in from the left side. The orange plastic piece has to be put to the front of the pusher arm to push the slides into the scanner. The slices are loaded on the top of the tray.FRANKLIN H : The Universal 50 tray has two groves on the bottom that next on the two humps on the scanner. It just slides in from the right side, with the slides loaded and on top. The pusher arm has to have the wide orange pusher put to the from to front of the pusher arm to push the slice into the scanner automatically.ABRAHAM S : My tray looks different from the photo. Take off from lid of scanner. Load tray from left. The diagonal cut is facing up and toward the middle of the scanner. This tray rides in the grooves of the scanner, my other tray didn'tGAYLE M : I an m not sure about this answer as I don't have this scanner any longer. As I recall you slide the tray in from from the right as you face the scanner with the numbers positioned so they can be read as you look down at the scanner. Stop when the tray is in position for the the 1st slide to viewed.BRUCE W : Amaziing, I was looking for someone to comment about the tray... here's my take.. because I use the scanner constantly (were talking about the 50 slide tray) I've found that the tolerance is too small for the tray. Hanging or catching edges on older and slightly older slides is a constant. Measuring the opening at the top is .09mm, at the bottom it is .25mm. .09 should be one, two or three larger top to bottom... making it .12mm to .28mm. I have to enter each slide by hand.. thus making my work a real labor and way too inefficient. I love the PS3650 and what it accomplishes but there needs to be engineering changed to the tolerances. Folks these days, If I'm correct, don't use slides as a means of storage for their pictures however, almost all slides I process are quite used and old.... round corners or not they all have been used repeatedly and therefore show wear and tear or edge bruising. I would like a new one if those tolerances were corrected. It would be nice not to have to hand feed the scanner... Shakey WallsANDREW L : I will send you a picture if you want. Tell me where to send it, unless of I can attach it here. Play with it , there is only one way that it will fit. It's not perfect, bit it is pretty good.DENNIS B : Just like the tray that comes with the scanner, these trays slide in from the left end (left as viewed from the front of the scanner). The tray goes in such that the slide numbers are on the top front edge. When you put it in, you have to be sure that the tracks are all the way against the bottom of the scanner, and slide it all the way in until it stops against the slide changing mechanism.GREGORY P : There are three grooves in the scanner channel. The tray slides in from the left side of the scanner (controls facing you). The tray bottom has corresponding three rails - you can see them facing you on the product picture on Adorama. The side opposite the rails points up. The numbers embossed on the tray face you so that slide number one is on your right and slide 50 is on the left. The slides ride up as the tray is slid in from the left. When the tray is properly in the grooves it can not be lifted up out of the scanner but can only slide right and left. Make sure you use the orange plastic thingy on the metal slide pusher with this tray and put it back to normal position when using any of the other slide trays.RADU M : Easily. It has guides at the bottom and they only fit one way. The scanner has the groove which will accommodate the tray on its guides.Rob Richman R : I have the PS5000 but i believe it is the same. The grooves on the bottom line up with the scanner. From the left, slide it into the scanner in the grooves. you have to start all the way from the left, not just placing it in the unit, but rather sliding it in from the left. Hope that helps.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?FREDERICK H : I chose these because they do not tend to jam when older slides are slightly curved from sitting too long in circular trays.ANDREW L : Can handle damages slides better, and if (when) a damaged slide jams, it's easy to remove when using this tray.BRUCE W : the tray shown is not the one that came with the scanner originally. the one originally that came with the scanner is what I was commenting on and about.. the one shown was way too wide for my purposes...so I returned it.... I still need to acquire a tray like the original but tolerances corrected as I commented about. Shakey Walls

good for the older, thicker slides.

A good tray for thicker or slightly warped non-plastic mount slides. Use the round 100 carousel for those. You HAVE to move the orange piece on the scanner push arm to the end of the arm in order to use this tray. (This item doesn't usually come with instructions but this is the IMPORTANT item about the tray.) Most other sellers are usually sold out of this model. Also be aware that this tray will extend to either side of the scanner - so leave room. It also has a different orientation when loading the slides from the other trays. I've run about 10,000 slides through my scanner with the various types of trays. I usually give each tray a spray of silicone lube once after receiving it (rarely get jams). Use the round trays for plastic mounts and perfect cardboard mounts - the secret here is get rid of the plastic clippy things from the bottoms of the round trays and have the tray completely full or it may stop turning halfway through the scan (gravity acting on a half loaded tray) and repeatedly scan the same slide. The supplied 50 tray that comes with the scanner also works if you can't fill the 100 slide round tray. This 50 Universal model is the one to use if you have thicker or older slightly warped slides or are worried about some that might jam. If they won't fall out by gravity out of the round tray then they need this one.

works

Any fatter or slightly warped non-plastic mount slides need this thing rather than the enclosed tray or the round carousel. You have to make sure the orange plastic pusher thing on your scanner is extended (it is retracted for all other magazines) for this to work. Also double check the slide orientation when loading. I slides into the grooves of the scanner and will extend to either side for a decent distance - so make sure there is space when scanning. Does not appear to be on sale from the pacific image site often. Adorama has everything. Jams are easier to clear and see than the round tray.

Works fine after alterations

This tray is great in that the slots are sufficiently wide to accept the old glass-mounted slides I have, that are too thick to fit in the standard tray that came with my PowerSlide 3650. However, this tray is not shaped correctly along the outside wall where the arm goes in and out, causing the tray to be tipped up slightly to fit around a tab in the chute wall near where the arm is. The slight tipping of the tray causes the slide to jam against the top of the scanner opening as it is being pushed into the scan position. I was able to cut off a portion of the tray to make it fit around the tab properly - but it should be contoured correctly in the first place. Also, the bottom of the tray that slides along the chute in the PowerSlide 3650 is narrow, not filling the entire space. This allows my heavy glass slides to tip and jam against the bottom edge of the tray as they're pulled from the scanner. Not good. I ended up making a spacer to fill in the gap between the tray and the scanner entry/exit mouth to prevent the slide from dropping, which allows it to operate reasonably reliably now with far fewer jams. So while the tray holds my thick, heavy slides - a good thing - it neither allowed the slides to be pushed into the scanner without jamming nor let them be pulled out without jamming until I corrected both these problems.

Slots too big, slides won't feed

I bought two of these to use with a Pacific Image PS3650 and they are completely useless. The slide slots are so big that my cardboard-mounted slides flop around loosely, making the scanner's push arm miss the slide almost every time. I tried using my second magazine to tilt the scanner so the slides would sit in the same position, but that same position is to the side, not in the middle. Look at the reviews for the Braun 100S (don't forget the S) GRAY round slide carousel for 2.2mm or smaller slides. They are stellar, with the proviso that you fully load the tray with 100 slides each time. Don't waste your money on this one.

Disregard my 1-Star Review

I wrote that slides in this tray flop around making the push bar on the Pacific Image PS3650 miss the slide. This scanner has an atrocious user manual that does not contain this piece of information I had to find online: There is an orange plastic slider on the handle end of the push bar will make the end of the push bar wider; wide enough to push every slide in this tray, no matter where it has flopped. To find it, pull out the black handle and look at the top of the silver metal bar. Don't try to remove it. PUSH it along the bar towards the machine as far as you can. Then push the black handle in until you can see the orange slider and move it the rest of the way out to the end of the push bar. Now this tray will work fine!

Works Nicely

Surprisingly, it took me some time to figure out how this tray mounts on the Power Slide 3650. However it does work without jamming. The only draw back is the length of the tray and the necessary space required on either side of the machine. The stock tray supplied with the machine works just as well and is just over 1/2 the length, both hold 50 slides. The Braun round tray (BRTM250AFG) also works nicely and holds 100 slides and requires no space on either side of the machine. All trays work well without any jamming to date on my machine, however, all of my slides are in pristine condition, jamming may occur when bent slides are scanned.

This universal tray for the PS3650 is better suited for cardboard mounted slides.
