works as expected, extra controls for vertical usability and additional battery for added life are primary reasons I purchased

Positive things: Excellent price, I like the size of the grip with the camera and the way it fits my hand. The controls are well placed. I also noticed that I can now use "back button focus" without any problems. I use to use BBF with the K-5 & KS-2 but when I went to KP it just didn't work for me, my fingers kept pushing the wrong button and I finally went back to using the shutter button for focus. With the grip, it is more natural for BBF. It's good to be able to carry an extra memory card, although I have never filled one out on one outing and I always had my camera bag with me which has extra cards & batteries. It is also thoughtful that the electrical pin connection covers can be stored inside the grip so they won't become lost. The camera & grip remain water-resistant which is one of the reasons I originally went to Pentax. It does improve the handling of the camera and glad I purchased it. Negative thoughts: Above I stated I liked the size of the grip & camera, but that is also a negative. I have two camera bags, one is a regular backpacking camera bag, have and no problem with that bag. But the one I use about 95% of the time is a shoulder bag, an older Lowepro Nova 2 bag. This bag has carried a K-1000 film camera, Canon 350 DSLR, Canon 5D full-frame, then Pentax K-5 II, KS-2, and now my KP. I could carry two or three extra lens and assorted stuff. But the battery grip with the KP will not fit, the bag needs to be about an inch or more wider. I could remove any extra lens and stuff it into the bag, but it appears I will have to be looking for a new shoulder bag. This Lowepro Nova 2 bag is over twenty years old and I am kind of attached to it, but maybe it's time for a change. One other thing I noticed is that the tripod screw mount on the bottom of the grip is not centered with the camera & lens body. I am not sure how important that is, just an observation.

I don’t have big hands, but I find the KP a bit small to hold onto, even with the large side grip. This is especially true when shooting with DA* lenses for hours on end. This battery grip is a joy to hold and helps the ergonomics of the KP significantly. I’ll be ordering another for my other KP soon. I just wish they weren’t so pricy.

Grip adds good balance when KP used with telephoto and large zoom lenses.
Featuring an extra set of control buttons and dials for vertical-position shooting, this grip assures a firm camera hold both horizontally and vertically in combination with the included Grip L. In addition to the D-LI109 battery - the same battery used on the camera body - it also accepts the large-capacity D-LI90 battery for extended shooting sessions.
