best compact camera ever!

The Ricoh GRD IV is responsive, with customizable functionality and a low shutter response time that I think is comparable to any of the gripped, pro level dSLR bodies D4, Mark whatever EOS bodies). My only gripe is the power management on these cameras. Left in sleep mode (lens extended, rear LCD off), battery will deplete in under four hours so do yourseld a favor and purchase another battery!

Immediately impressed!

I received the Ricoh GRD IV and started using in past two weeks. I was impressed with the quality of the images I made with little review of custom settings. After a few days of exploring camera menu further, I found it quite intuitive and user friendly. The manual is actually a printed little book, which makes it easy to read and fiddle with camera as you go along. I anticipate carrying the camera with me daily, learning the various features and creating even better photos. I have had several film SLRs in the past, but never a digital one. The GRD IV is the first pocket-size camera that has made me feel in control again and finally able to enjoy digital photography. I am giving the camera five stars, as I have yet to discover any negatives.

Definitely worth the price!

The first thing I noticed about my GRD IV was its quality build; the grip is comfortable to hold and the body has a sort of grainy feel (which I love). The LCD screen was extremely clear as well! Although some people view the lack of zoom as a con, I see it as a pro because (concerning street photography) it allows you to get CLOSER to your subject. I personally prefer fixed lenses over zoom lenses. The Ricoh GRD IV, however, lacks a viewfinder. But, it can work to your advantage. If a viewfinder is essential to you; Ricoh has some optional accessories like the GV-1 and GV-2 OVF. If you're a street photographer, you can probably get away with a lot of photo opportunities that come your way because you'll just look like another person (or tourist) with a compact camera. Which leads me to my next point. I love how small and compact the GRD IV is. It definitely lightens the load on my shoulders when it's mounted on my Custom SLR Gliding Strap as well as when it's in my Retrospective 5. I love carrying around my Nikon D300 with me, but sometimes it just gets in the way. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone who is considering it. Although it is expensive for a compact camera, it is worth EVERY penny! I know that it's tough trying to find out info or reviews on the Ricoh GRD IV, but, give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

Ricoh lover

I owned the Ricoh GR-1 many years ago and that was my favorite camera ever. More recently I've used the Nikon D80 (which I still own and enjoy) but it's too big to lug around everywhere. I did use a Canon Elph something or other but it died and I disliked the Canon menus. When I saw this camera and started reading about it, I knew it was a contender. The customizable menu is fantastic. There are so many ways you can set it so that the camera operates to your individual liking. High degree of usability. Pictures are great and best of all, I can take it everywhere. It's completely unobtrusive. Even my 12-year-old daughter thinks it's an "old" camera since it has that classic look. I like that--I figure it's less likely to get stolen. :) I might not recommend this camera to just anyone--I think the best user is self-selecting. I wouldn't buy it for my mom, for example. Different people need and want different things.

Ricoh Imaging is pleased to announce the launch of the RICOH GR IV HDF camera. Based on the RICOH GR IV premium compact camera, this new model incorporates the RICOH-original HDF Highlight Diffusion Filter), designed to deliver mellow, diffused expression with a single-action control.

RICOH GR IV HDF camera

With the exceptional image quality, flawless point-andshoot operation, and outstanding portability that the GR series is known for, the GR IV HDF allows the user to instantly engage the built-in HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter) with a single action. This special-effect filter diffuses highlight areas and creates a blurred effect along the image's edges, making it possible to capture somewhat nostalgic images resembling those captured in film photography or vintage movies.

This creative versatility expands the visual boundaries of snapshot photography, giving the user the option to shoot high resolution, high contrast images for accuracy and precision; or softer, more expressive images to create a sense of depth and emotion, depending on their subject or creative intention.

Creative versatility

Built-in RICOH-original HDF to create more expressive images

The GR IV HDF incorporates the RICOH-original HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter), which is designed to emphasize highlights and produce mellow, soft images. Developed by taking advantage of the advanced inkjet technology RICOH has cultivated over the years, this special-effect filter diffuses highlight areas and creates a blurred effect along the image's edges, making it possible to capture nostalgic images resembling those captured in film photography or movies.

HDF can be instantly switched on and off with a single action, allowing the user effortlessly to alternate between two completely different visual expressions - clear, sharply focused images representative of the RICOH GR series, and softer light, more expressive images captured by the HDF - depending on the subject or creative intention.

Built-in RICOH-original HDF

High-speed electronic shutter for shooting at extremely bright locations

In addition to a conventional mechanical shutter unit, the GR IV HDF also features an electronically controlled shutter mechanism, which allows the user to intentionally raise the shutter speed up to 1/16,000 second, making it possible to capture images at extremely bright locations while still setting a larger aperture.

High-speed electronic shutter

HDF default setting for Fn Button

The default setting of the Fn (Function) button has been changed to the HDF ON/OFF switching function, allowing the user to quickly engage the HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter) with the press of the button.

HDF default setting for Fn Button

The color of the shutter-release button has been changed from the GR IV’s black to grayish silver, to subtly differentiate the HDF model and to symbolize the camera’s ability to instantly shift the image’s visual expression.
