A very versatile and useful lens. Sharp, fast, flexible with excellent image quality. It's a reasonable size and weight too, a nice portable package.

barely a month old and already has dust on the inside of the lens affecting picture quality. Major regret buying this, i didn't go second hand as i didn't want dust in such a expensive lens... May as well have saved myself the money.

Great lens, I'm on a learning curve with it but I'm getting more right than wrong. The picture quality is amazing and focus is super quick.

Needed a longer zoom lens, and after doing a lot of checking with other makes, weight, size, price and other reviews, decided on this 100-400mm. Glad i did, very fast focusing, lovely smooth zooming in and out and not too heavy, even with a vertical grip, was able to do hand held shoots. Picture quality was excellent.

This lens is fantastic and so versitile and probably the most versitle lens you can buy, its very sharp and paired with the a9ii and the a1 it gives exceptional results, the best thing it has a minum focus rage of 1mtr so for semi macro especially butterflies which are notoriously difficult to get close to this lens is a game changer as well as the reach for wildlife with 400mm

Excellent build quality. High quality construction. Not as heavy as I thought it would be, which is good. Has three assignable buttons one can use in portrait/landscape orientations. Detachable foot. Slide door on hood enabling access when wanting to adjust circular polarizing filter--all very practical. The focus ring is buttery smooth, as is the focal length adjustment ring--very good for video use. The optical image stabilization works seamlessly on my A7RIII. At 400mm, I have been able to take sharp images hand held at 1/80th of a second shutter speed. The lens is very very sharp at all focal lengths, which is why I said "Why Buy the 70-200 GM When You Can Have the 100-400GM?" If you need a telephoto zoom for portraits in low light, this is not your lens. But I feel very comfortable saying this lens would make an excellent portrait lens in studio and outdoors in good lighting. Don't forget 400mm at 5.6 isolates the subject and blows out the background just as well as 135mm or 200mm at f/2.8. No need to worry so much a HSS to get that effect, either.

I hired this lens for two holidays before taking the plunge and buying one for myself. I've been thrilled with the sharp images I've obtained of wildlife. 400mm is enough to capture animals at some distance without being so heavy that I can't hold it steady. 100mm is short enough for the animals that come somewhat closer. It's an excellent lens which works well with my A7iii camera.

Very sharp images even at 400mm. Price is steep for f4.5-5.6.

I rented a copy of this lens to assess the dífference as it is quite expensive. It was apparent after the first day this was the balance of performance, focal length and weight was excellent. I traded two thirds party lenses, both very good, when I bought this lens.

Excellent lens, sharp and quick AF. Much smaller and lighter for travel than my 200-600. Works great with both the 1.4 and 2.0 TC when there is enough light for the F-stop reduction. Has short minimum focal distance and have used for everything from wildlife to sports, landscape, flower closeup and portrait. Primarily use for travel when I don't carry 2 bodies fitted with other lens. Big disappointment is no zoom lock on external zoom GM lens. Has softer/tighter ring but lens creeps even on tighter setting. I knew this when I bought it but other features offset.

Great option for the focal length, for the price it appears to be the highest quality. Sharp and clear overall.

I bought this a month ago to replace my Sigma 60-600 F4.5-6.3 DG and I have regretted my decision. I switched because Sony's 100-400 is a much lighter zoom lens. But its performance is far from meeting my expectation. First, it takes much longer to focus and second, the quality of the photos is far from satisfactory. There lacks a zoom lock and so it just "zooms" out whenever it is left dangling down from my shoulder. I probably would need to look for another replacement soon.

I bought this lenses as the 2-600mm became too heavy for my injured shoulder. Although I have been totally satisfied using my 70-200mm with the 2X TC, the added reach combined with great autofocus, sharpness and lighter weight make this lens my "go to" for birds.

Having owned the excellent A-mount 70-400 f4-5.6, which traveled with me for mainly wildlife photography all over the world, I wanted the performance benefits of this lens with the Alpha 7 etc series of FE mount bodies, in particular the ability to use the telephoto converters with a rich range of features. I am delighted to have made the transition. Results with and without the TCs are excellent and the autofocus features are a real pleasure. Highly recommended.

Ive been wanting this lens for a couple years but i kept not buying it because its so expensive. And being retired money is not easy to come by. Im 75 years old now so it was really a want instead of a need. So i just want to let others know that this lens is awesome and a definite keeper. Wish i could have bought it sooner. I have a Sony telephoto 70 to 200 f4. But found it just didn't have the reach i wanted a lot of the time. I read the reviews of others trying different brands and they didn't seem satisfied so thats why i got the Sony?.its focus is amazing and I'm totally satisfied.

I bought one of these about 3-4 years ago when I first changed over to Sony as, other than the 400 f2.8, it was the biggest lens that Sony did. Soon after though, they brought out the 200-600 so I bought one of those as well. Last year I bout the 400 f2.8 and decided to sell my 100-400 to a friend. Big mistake as the 100-400 is so good and so useful so.... I bought aniother copy a few weeks back

I have owned this lens for 3mth. It's a great lens for wildlife and other types of photography. I use it predominantly handheld and have some great results. It's a pity the zoom isn't internal like the 200 -600, in hides when zooming in and out particularly behind glass mean moving back and forwards. The lens is light weight enough to use for a long session handheld and travel. I do on occasions use the 1.4x extender and again have had some great results. If you're looking for a versatile lens that give great results, then this is a good choice.

In addition to world-class image quality, this fine lens offers the mobility, reliability, and operability that professional applications demand.
G Master super-telephoto zoom
A 100 mm to 400 mm zoom range is ideal for sports, wildlife and similar subjects, with image quality and AF performance that support professional working needs.
Fast, tenacious autofocus
An optimal combination of double linear motor and DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) drive systems achieves quick response, high accuracy and tenacious tracking.
High resolution and fast AF at any focal length
Precision G Master optics ensure consistently high corner-to-corner resolution at any focusing distance throughout the lensf zoom range.
Compact, lightweight and mobile
Innovative modular exterior construction and magnesium components reduce weight and size for improved portability and mobility.
Outstanding shooting versatility
A floating focus mechanism achieves a minimum focus distance of just 0.98 metres (3.22 ft.) so you can track and shoot subjects at any distance with one lens.
Features
G Master super-telephoto zoom
This top-performance G Master zoom lens covers a broad 100 mm to 400 mm focal length range that is ideal for sports, wildlife, and other subjects that require a long reach. It offers image quality and AF performance that will support professional fieldwork, tracking and capturing even fast-moving subjects with outstanding resolution and clarity.
Fast, tenacious autofocus
The optimal combination of double linear motor and DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) drive systems is the first of its kind. It also implements precision sensors that provide real-time feedback for extremely high positioning accuracy, allowing the bodyf s AF system to perform at its best.
High resolution at any focal length
A precision optical design ensures consistently high corner-to-corner resolution at any focusing distance throughout the lensf s zoom range. The SEL100400GM not only delivers stunning images of distant subjects at super-telephoto focal lengths, it offers equally high performance when shooting nearby subjects as well.
Compact, lightweight and mobile
Magnesium alloy components and other refinements contribute to high durability as well as class-leading size and weight reductions that not only mean greater mobility, but improved manageability with lightweight bodies for easier, more stable handheld shooting.
Clarity and contrast in any light
Sonyf s Nano AR Coating suppresses spurious reflections that can cause flare and ghosting in backlit and other challenging lighting situations, for consistently high contrast and clarity. Reduced flare, particularly when shooting in bright outdoor conditions, means greater framing and composing flexibility.
Natural rendering and colour
Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one Super ED glass element strategically deployed in an advanced optical design effectively suppress axial chromatic aberration that is often a cause of resolution falloff in telephoto lenses. The result is exceptionally clear, well-defined images.
Zoom torque adjustment
This is the first ± lens to include a zoom smoothness adjuster that provides mechanical control of zoom ring torque. Set a lower torque for fast zooming, or increase torque when slow, stable zooming is required. Fine adjustment allows the feel of the lens to be matched to individual user needs.
Outstanding shooting versatility
Floating focus and high positioning precision have made it possible to achieve a minimum focus distance of just 0.98 m (3.22 ft) with up to 0.35x magnification. You will have a versatile 100-mm to 400-mm super-telephoto zoom range, plus outstanding close-up performance at 100 mm.
Clear, blur-free images without a tripod
Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation makes it easier to capture blur-free images, particularly when shooting sports or other subjects that require a fast stabilisation response. Mode 2 stabilisation facilitates dynamic panned shots. 5-axis stabilization becomes available when used with ± series bodies that feature in-body stabilisation.
Customisable focus hold button
Conveniently located focus hold buttons provide focus hold control even during continuous AF operation. They can also be customised from a camera menu that allows them to be assigned to a variety of different functions.
Removable tripod mount
A removable tripod mount allows quick attachment to or removal from a tripod so the user can easily switch between tripod and handheld shooting. The mount can also be removed for convenient transport and storage. A lock mechanism prevents accidental removal.
Teleconverters for extra reach
SEL100400GM is fully compatible with the high-performance SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverters for a 1.4x or 2x increase in focal length, respectively. Thatf s a maximum focal length of 800 mm (1200 mm on an APS-C format body).
Fluorine coated front element
The lensf s front element features a fluorine coating that helps to prevent dirt and fingerprints from sticking and makes it easier to wipe dirt and fingerprints away as they do become attached to the lens surface. This can be a significant advantage for outdoor shooting.
High reliability in harsh conditions
The overall design of this lens is dust and moisture resistant for extra protection and reliable operation in challenging environments. Shoot with confidence in light rain or windy conditions.
Pro lens hood features
An access window that can be opened or closed as required allows easy access for polarizing filter operation, and a hood lock switch prevents accidental detachment or rotation of the lens hood while shooting or moving around.
