Corner to corner sharpness
Based on my photo experiences many years ago, I always avoided zooms in favor of primes. But these new G Master zooms are amazing. Great contrast and rendering, razor sharp even wide open. The old argument about the weight of zooms vs primes really doesn't make sense when you consider this one lens is the equivalent of 16mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm and 35mm primes.
Super lens
Bought this on release after wanting it for so long to pair with my A7Rii. It is a full stop faster than the Sony/Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 and the benefits are tremendous. Better low light and action performance and OSS is not really necessary or beneficial on the newer bodies that have IBIS. Focus hold button that can be reprogrammed for several other functions (but not as many as a programmable camera button) is useful too. The FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Lens is the first wide-angle G Master zoom lens that fully leverages the high-resolution potential of the latest and future Sony E-mount camera bodies. It combines Sony's most advanced optical and mechanical technologies to deliver extraordinary rendering and clarity.
The lens features an uncompromised optical design that achieves extremely high resolution and contrast, making it ideal for capturing landscapes, architecture, interiors, and other expansive subjects with outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness. Its aspherical elements minimize distortion, while ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively control chromatic aberration.
The lens also features two Sony XA (extreme aspherical) elements with 0.01 micron surface precision. This meticulous design controls distortion, astigmatism, and field curvature that can occur in wide-angle zoom lenses. The XA elements also effectively suppress unattractive onion-ring bokeh, ensuring smooth, beautiful bokeh in out-of-focus areas.
Sony's original Nano AR Coating on the lens suppresses spurious reflections that can cause flare and ghosting in challenging lighting situations, ensuring consistently high contrast and clarity. This feature provides greater framing and composing flexibility, particularly at wide-angle focal lengths.
The lens employs a floating focus mechanism with two independently driven lens groups, ensuring consistently high resolution from infinity to the closest focusing distance. This system helps reduce all types of aberration to minimum levels, maintaining sharp, high-resolution rendering for all your subjects, from landscapes to portraits.
