Questions & Answers

MARLON B : Is the focusing motor silent?Frank R : Yes. I have never noticed any sound with my 35 mm Sony lens. It's easy to lose the small lens cap though and expensive to replace it.
Tom S : I'm new to the Sony A7 and getting ready to purchase this lens for skiing and other activities. What about filters for like snow or beach pictures? I have never used filters but have friends that always use them so wanting a professional option. UV? Circular Polarizer Filter? Thanks a lot!!THOMAS L : No matter what the camera is, you should always get filters for your lenses. Especially on 800 dollar equipment. the UV filter is alone is just for protection. Polarizers are used to get more pop and reduce any glare. ND filters are good for very over exposed bright areas. I recommend both.MIKHAIL A : Neither of those are easy shooting conditions and camera won't automatically help. Primary issue in snow is that camera is confused what is grey - because there is no grey. Camera autoexposure MUST have midtown to determine expose. Otherwise white snow, sand, white bride dress w become gray (seen enough those pictures with gray snow?) First thing is snow or beach you want to adjust exposure compensation to +2. UV filter helps, polarizer is not needed. Thing is, polarizer takes time to adjust and only works when sun is 90 degrees away from shooting direction. For skiing and activities you want a) fast autofocus and b) good zoom. A7 is NOT camera for either of those. AF is slow and fastest zoom is F4. Get Nikon or Canon.WILLIAM M : I have some filters, but except for the UV which I always use to protect my lenses have not tried any of the others.DONALD J : I don't use UV filters but often use Circular Polarizer filters. The polarizers make a big difference at the beach or in snow. They cut the glare of the sand, water and snow. I think they make the pictures looks richer. I nearly always use a polarizing filter if I am shooting outdoors. I use the B + W 49mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Multi Coated Glass Filter on my FE 35 2.8. It is a great filter, no loss in lens quality. I have used cheaper filters and could always see effects on the quality of my pictures.ROMY E : I use filter just to protect my lens Great for too bright sunlightsBONNIE L : Tom S - I'm not sure what kind of filters might be considered good for beach or snow pix, but I use a circular polarizer to cut glare for water pictures (think "shiny" rocks in a stream - a CP will cut the glare). Also good on foggy days and makes colors pop on sunny days (although you need to be careful not to overdo it). Haven't put a UV filter on this lens, as I'm not sure of the purpose other than as protection. I usually avoid a filter whenever I can, as this lens is so super sharp it seems a shame to put something between it and the scene unless absolutely necessary.CONDOR C : YES! I have and use a circular polarizer! I use it on water, but it would work equally has well on snow.JYOTI G : Excellent lens to buy - get a good uv filter to protect the lens while out in the snow and a good quality circular polarizer. I like B & W as well as Hoya. Hope this helps.
Tom S : I have the Sony A7 that I plan to use on upcoming ski trip. I'm not comfortable with the longer lens that came with camera so looking for lighter shorter lens to use when skiing but still want to be able to take excellent pictures mostly landscape. Would this 35mm lens be a good option or what other options do I have?? Thanks!RICHARD S : This is an excellent lens, the best 35mm lens I have ever used very sharp and color, buy with confidence.DALE H : HI Tom, For a small, light lens, this performs very well. Two questions: Is 35mm wide enough for landscape ? Are you willing to focus manually ? There are many manual lens that perform quite well. For landscape, manual focus is easy. For shots of family or actions, not as easy. Nikon 28/2.8 AIS, Contax 28mm Distagon. Other auto focus options include the new 16-35mm, buts it is much larger.HARVEY S : For a Sony A7 or 7r camera, you can't find a better 35mm lens. I have had one that I use on both my A7r and my A-6000 bodies. The results have been as good as it gets for a 35mm format sensor (and certainly for a C-size sensor where just the center of the lens is utilized). There had been some talk from pixel-peepers that the corners of the image were soft for the 35mm ZA lens on an A7r. I haven't seen anything but a slight fall-off expected in even the very best 35mm lenses, and only very moderate vignetting. As long as you keep your exposures steady or use higher shutter speeds, you will be very happy with the crispness and clarity of your images taken with this lens. My only criticism is that the reversible lens hood bayonet mount tends to come off the lens easily. But, it is a clever compact design.daniel d : It's a very light lens and can make stellar images.. It's a must have with the camera. I got the 55mm 1.8 and it's amazing as wellBILL L : The 35F28 is light and easy to handle. I have reasonable results using it in location like Las Vegas where there are lots of color and high contrast. If F2.8 is not fast enough for you then the 55F18 can be an alternative. The opinion on which is better is divided depending on your style and types of photo preferred. The DXO folks has rated the 55F18 high on their test list if you are interested in lens performance testing. As a suggestion, check out the 35f28 group on Flickr and see if you like the images. Cheers!Neil G : Excellent fast lens ,probably best option for your landscapes. This is a medium wide lens . Best luckRICHARD G : This is my choice when I want a "walk around" lens. The focal length is ideal for almost all situations except portrait shots. Its small size on the A7 makes an ideal combination for easy carry, like what you will need while skiing.W DAVID E : Yes it will be a good lens for landscape.JEFFREY H : I would recommend this lens as it is small but packs a powerful full frame punch. Incredible depth of field when used on my A7r.

Great Prime

This is my first prime lens and use of fixed focus, since the days of compact 35mm cameras. I wanted to get back and try fixed focus, after all, that was more or less our only choice if we couldn't afford expensive equipment. This lens is producing very sharp photos and I have been very impressed. The colours are also coming out bright and full of life. I cannot describe it compare to other lenses. If you are looking for a prime 35mm, this is a very decent choice.

Great compact lens for street photography

I loved the compact size of the lens when mounted on my a7CR. I only wish that there was a 24mm or 28mm option available.

Perfect delivery of Sony 35mm f2.8 Sonnar Zeiss lens.

Received package on time. Lens was extremely well packaged. It could have been dropped from a 1000 feet and the lens would have landed safely. The product, a used lens, was spotless and basically perfect. I would recommend anyone to look over the used equipment, like camera gear, to purchase at a much lower than 'new' price. I got this lens for slightly less than half listed price and received basically a new lens.

Buy the sony 35mm 1.8 instead

This lens has a really long minimum focus distance. i can't take detail shots when I am photographing families, dogs or kids. The closest i can get to my subject is 35 cm away which is too far. So I can't photograph eyes, eyelashes, features, basically anything less than 35mm away. This lens was also quite expensive. If i had to choose again i would get the Sony SEL 35mm F1.8 OSS Lens for ?379.

Now in-camera RAW editing?

It came unexpected so disappointed by the lack of this feature. Even for only test image profiles for generating a JPEG to use when in mobility. This is a basic feature that lower price camera has and the lack of it surprised me very negatively

Nice compact lens with good image quality

I bought this lens so that I can travel with a small lightweight prime for general shooting and it fits this bill nicely. Image quality is very good and I haven't noticed much in the way of distortion or CA's. Autofocus seems a little slow, but perfectly acceptable for this type of lens. In an ideal world it would be F2 but of course that would add to size, weight and cost. I do think that UK RRP is too much for tis lens though.

Superb lens

I am particularly fond of 35mm lenses, they just suit what I do. A 35 and 85 are pretty much all I need. This lens is really good, sharp all the way through, although I don't tend to use it below 5.6. Light weight, easy to carry. When I'm feeling lazy and I just want a light, fast, simple set up for street type use, this lens on my A7iii is all I need, or want! As to whether the peculiar lens hood supplied with the lens does any good is debatable. I use it because it came with the lens, it hasn't caused me any problems and at least provides an unobtrusive solution. Good lens, highly recommended for anyone into street work. Price, a little bit heavy, but...........

Excellent quality in a tiny package.

Small and discrete, with stunning sharpness and exceptionally punchy colour. This lens is fantastic for travel. Without the hood attached it's not much thicker than the grip of my A7ii. It's great lens to slap on for street photography for the standard focal length and low profile or when you're going out and don't want a bigger, heavier lens getting in the way. Autofocus is also really snappy- in good light, subjects come into focus nearly instantly.

What a Banger!

What a banger! I wish all primes were this good and this small. It's 35mm, so I don't care if it doesn't open up to 1.4 and neither should you, unless your goal is to impress people on Y**Tube. 2.8 is thin enough for most things that it's worth the tradeoff not to have a family-size can of soup sticking off the front of your camera. The *retail* price is a little high, but within the field of 35mm prime options, I think it was worth it. I just wish every lens came with a programmable focus hold button on the side. I know it's too much to ask, but seriously.

Good in parts

A reasonable 35mm lens - but f2.8 is a little slow for a fixed focal length 35mm. Performance is reasonable but not outstanding. The external finish is fragile and scuffs easily. For the price this is slightly disappointing. I bought this for the compact size - which is the best feature of this lens.

Perfect - Great Street Photography and Much More

Equipped with my A7R III, I simply do not need an F-Stop lower unless I need more bokeh that a smaller aperture would offer for portrait photography with a 35mm lens. The bokeh on this lens is great for portraits. My typical day time street photography is usually done at a range of 4.0 to 8.0 and this lens is a beast such that a 2.8 F-Stop is just fine. An aperture of 1.4 or 1.8 on the 35 mm prime lens is much larger and would not accommodate my particular needs for size. The low light performance on my A7R III is spectacular as well as my older A7 using this 35 mm lens. I can toss this into my backpack being my go to lens for landscape and casual portrait photography. I use a 50mm or 85mm at 1.8 F-stop for posed portraits but usually I do more street photography, landscapes, and family candid shots such that the 35mm 2.8 works better for my needs with great resolution detail. A great overall lens.
