Bought for photo and video of owls at dusk and dawn. Super sharp and performs well at low light. Does excellent in focusing and tracking birds in flight and eye auto-focus typically of still subject. Lighter weight than competitor, but still heavy enough I call this lens tripod-must lens if one plan to shoot for hours. It performs well with 1.4X for better reach. I bought 400mm so I can handhold and do video, but the lens does not have good Image Stabilization than lets 200-600mm or 300mm with 2X. In fact it is terrible for $11k lens. I can't wait till 400mm f/2.8 Mark ii - lighter weight using 300mm technology, better Image Stabilization, and built in 1.4X like Nikon

Words don't do this lens enough justice. But "Best Lens Ever" is pretty close. It does everything as advertised and takes excellent photos. I am very happy with my purchase.

I have just come back from tiger safari, when I used the Sony A1 with the 400mm f2.8, very light and a perfect choice

I have owned Nikon and Phase One systems for the last 25 years. I recently switched to Sony (2 years ago) mostly because of their focus systems and glass. The 400 2.8 is the finest lens I ever owned. Build quality and image quality is second to none. Very expensive but if you need that focal length you won't find a better quality anywhere.

I was extremely pleased with the IQ of the Sony Primes vs the zooms lens. They are very expensive but less than Nikon. If you can justify the cost you will see a noticeable difference in IQ from the primes.

I love every about the Len Except for the lens hood. It would be a lot better if it was like the Minolta 600 lines that I had at one time, the Lions hood slid back it did not come off the lens I really like that all you had to do was slide it back and twist it and lock it on and then put the lens cover on.

A first-class lens that works extremely well with the Sony 1.4 Teleconverter and hopefully it will work just as well with the 2x converter when it is delivered.

Top notch lens. The linear motors provide very fast target acquisition and the depth of field makes the subjects pop. I chose this over the 600mm f4 for pure versatility. Add a teleconverter and you have a 600mm f4 with little to no compromise. Tracking is solid and the 2.8 opens up evening and early morning opportunities that did?t exist for me before. If you can afford it, it?s worth the money.

Bought this recently and have been very impressed with build, quality of images and how light it is. Easy for transporting and with the 1.4 converter, turns it into a 560mm F4. I ave the A9 so with the crop button, the selection of lengths and DoF I have is very impressive,

Being a wildlife and bird photographer, this lens is amazing. Tack sharp with the 2X teleconverter. Mostly use it on the 7RIII with sharp and fast focus. The lens takes Sony to another standard. I am waiting for the 600 to be a available since sometimes I need a little more reach.

I hesitated a lot before buying this lens, regarding the price and usability, often saw the whole reviews related the lens. but once I’ve review results, I didn’t felt that I go wrong by this choice, it’s amazing, light, incredible fast, never missed the focus, so sharp edge to edge, really worth it 12 k

I bought the 400mm lens for the sole purpose of shooting local sports, and I have been very pleased with the results in combination with my 24mm GM and 70-200 GM. To top that off, I just placed a deposit for the 600mm and can't wait to receive it!

I have photographed wildlife for years being privileged to have the finest lenses ...this new Sony 400mm F2.8 is an amazing lens - sharp edge to edge and remains so with the 1.4 and 2x tele ext - it is well balanced and I am able to hand hold it - it is expensive but it proves itself in results

Only two days shooting with this lens but it completes my switch from Nikon started two years ago. The A9 and 100-400GM have been great for limited reach but this gets me back to LONG glass! The balance and light weight are a dream. It is a hand holdable 400 2.8 or 560 4.0 or 800 5.6 because the 1.4x and 2.0 x TCs work great with it and IQ holds up! I did swap on the Wimberley AP-609 foot to get QR without having to stick a plate under the OEM foot. The Wimberley foot clears the hood and is more compact for storage. The lens is expensive but replaces BOTH my previous 400 and 600 Nikon primes. Looking forward to upcoming wildlife and sports outings with this incredible lens!

Very light lens thats easy to handhold, It has super fast AF and produces stunning images I really love using this lens for bird and wildlife.
Touting the lightest weight in its class according to Sony, the new 400mm F2.8 G Master lens is a sports and wildlife photography stalwart. Unveiled today, the lens is the seventh in the growing G Master lineup and the first super-telephoto wide-aperture full-frame E-mount lens.
Weighing in at 6.38 pounds, and with impressive optical features, the lens is a natural match for the A9....
The remarkable light weight and excellent balance of the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens - weighing it at only 6.38 lbs. - is achieved through an innovative optical design that includes three fluorite elements as well as the liberal usage of durable magnesium alloy components. The new design of this well-balanced lens, reduces the number of elements deployed at the front of the barrel, resulting in quicker, more precise panning, whether shooting handheld or on a monopod.
* Compared to 400mm F2.8 lenses for 35mm full-frame format cameras, as of June 2018, Sony survey.
Based on a new optical design that conforms to stringent G Master standards, the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS includes three fluorite elements and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element that help to reduce chromatic aberration, a common problem in telephoto lenses. Extremely high resolution is maintained right out to the image edges. Spherical aberration is optimized to create a perfect balance between high resolution and soft, beautiful bokeh through careful control at both the design and manufacturing stages. Each lens is individually tested and adjusted to achieve ideal characteristics.
The wide F2.8 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field while also allowing maximum light for shooting in almost any condition. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
The supplied lens hood is made of strong, lightweight carbon fiber to minimize added weight. The interior of the hood is lined with flocking to minimize reflections for optimum light control
The focus range limit switch allows a limited focus range to be selected when the fastest possible focusing is required. Three settings are provided: FULL, 7m-2.7m, and ∞-7m.
Instantly and quickly switch between auto and manual focus via an AM/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you, or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you chose.
DMF (Direct Manual Focus) give you the ability to instantly switch to manual focus while in autofocus mode. This is particularly useful when acquiring a subject using AF and then allowing you to fine tune your focus point using the manual focus ring. When the FULL TIME DMF switch is ON, manual focus is immediately engaged by simply rotating the focus ring, even while shooting in the AF-C mode. If AF causes focus to shift to a different subject while shooting, the focus ring can be used to quickly bring focus back to the desired subject. It can also be useful when it is necessary to focus beyond a set focus range limit.
