This lens is everything it needs to be. Much better image quality than I expected for the price. Highly recommend.

I purchased the lens from B&H Photo Video of New York City NY. The lens did not come with case. Do you have a recommendation for a carrying case? Why does 100400GM cone with a case but the 400800G does not come with a case.?

Excellent lens, smooth focus ring motion, very little aberration. Its weight is slightly more than the Sony 200-600 but is definitely worth it. Photos are sharp. Excellent stabilization. Paired with the Sony Alpha one it is nearly an unbeatable combination. If deciding between the 200-600 and the 400-800 I would suggest that if wildlife is your passion get the 400-800.

I sold my 200-600 to upgrade to the 400-800, I'm very happy with the lens, the 800 end is nice and shape for my type of photography, which is locating birds nest. I'm not able to supply any images, due to the sensor of showing birds on nest.

Excellent,a really a nice choice for Sony users ,althought the aperture of F8 is limiting in some scenarios ,the convenience of the zoom with reach surpasses other telephoto zoom options ,and even some primes ,the lens is built with Sony's expertise so rest assured of high quality ,internal zoom assures good balance and fast zoom throw ,coupled with Sonys superlative XD linear motors insured fast focusing ,a step up from competitors, lens hood is well designed everything has a premium feel, there will times when you may need something shorter for your needs ,but for birding wildlife where you subject can be either small or distant this lens gives you opportunitys only the best primes could achieve ,kudos to Sony it has now replaced my 200-600mm Sony g lens ,as first choice .only the weight will be a limited factor for some people.

bought new had for a couple of weeks mainly for bird photography but i think would be great for airshows, bit heavier than the 200-600 but sharper. F8 not so great on those dull days in the UK but the last couple of weeks of sun have been great, no issues at F8 and at 800 mm backgrounds blur very well.

The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is Sony’s first* α Lens that zooms to 800mm; a range that is ideal for distant subjects and telephoto compression. The fast, precise AF lets you capture unpredictable subjects with accuracy and precision. The internal zoom design minimizes center-of-gravity shift for smooth handling.
*As of February 26th, 2025.
The Sony FE 400-800 G is the first of its kind — retaining its high resolution across its zoom range.
Smooth, silent, and consistent. The two linear motors ensure fast and quiet AF, making it perfect for stills and recording high-activity videos.
Six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively control chromatic aberration that can be a problem at super-telephoto focal lengths. Flare and ghosting are also thoroughly suppressed.
Offering remarkable close-up capability for a super-telephoto zoom, VX8042 features a minimum focusing distance of just 1.7 m (5.58 ft) at the wide end of the zoom range and a maximum magnification of 0.23x. This level of close-up performance dramatically expands the potential uses of this versatile lens.
The Sony FE 400-800 G’s autofocus system makes sure you never miss critical moments when shooting. Capture effortless high-resolution images in any scenario with the AFC 120 fps burst shooting.
Manual focus control just got more responsive — valuing precision over everything, the linear response gives filmmakers an easier time when adjusting focus manually.
Have full control over how the lens functions — the manual aperture ring and Iris Lock Switch makes shots look better and more consistent.
Say goodbye to post-processing stress — the lens minimizes small shifts in the angle of view while focusing. Create smoother transitions and cinematic footage free from biological error!
Shooting handheld at super-telephoto focal lengths is made easier by the built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. MODE 2 is ideal for panned shots, while MODE 3 provides improved viewfinder stabilization for easier framing of active subjects.
Improving quality of life when using a gimbal or shooting manually — this mechanism makes shifts in focus more consistent and smooth, without affecting the balance of the lens.
Make the switch more convenient, the Sony FE 400-800 G can switch between MF and AF via the lens.
Focus hold allows users to lock focus at any time, making film production more precise and easy to control in tough shooting environments. The focus hold buttons are fully customizable — making some functions more easy to access.
Fluorine-coated front element repels water, oil, and other contaminants — keeping it clean and safe in any environment. The Sony FE 400-800 G is sealed shut with silicone rubber gaskets and a rubber ring seal, ensuring that no particles sneak inside.
