Questions & Answers

Patrick W : Can I use this lens on a Sony A600?MICHAEL N : No
Rochelle M : Having a debate with my hubby, I think I need a new camera and he thinks I just need a new lens. The reason: taking pictures of my daughter at her gymnastic meets. No flash photographyallowed and sometimes she is a fair distance away. I presently have a Sony a350 camera. Any suggestions?MATTHEW F : IMHO the Sony A350 and kit lens will not do for indoor gymnastics. While I do no sports, I do a lot of theater and dance, which is similar (lots of action with dark lousy lighting). With the A350 you start getting noise at IS0 800. When you extend the lens out to 200mm the fastest f stop setting is 5.6 which is slow. Of course, to shoot any action shots (dance and sports) you want a fast shutter speed. If you want good indoor sports shots, you will have to move up in both camera and lens. Fast equipment is expensive, but a necessity for the pictures you want to shoot, if you want good pictures.CHRISTIAN L : The Sony DT 55-200 SAM may be suitable. I consider it to be a good "travel zoom" lens that is light weight, compact, and can take good to very good photos. It has a plastic build and a plastic mount. Mine has held up for over 4 years of occasional use. Keep in mind that the maximum aperture at 200 mm focal length is only f5.6. Since flash photography is not allowed, your husband will have to use a fairly high ISO sensitivity to stop gymnastic action under the lights of the gym. Using a high ISO might create more "noise" in the picture with your A350 by that shouldn't be an overriding concern. This lens loses a little sharpness with wide apertures at longer focal lengths. It also doesn't focus super quickly, but in a gymnastics meet that shouldn't make too much difference because you will know ahead of time where your daughter will be standing. If you have another $100 to spend, you might want to consider the Sony DT 55-300mm f/4 - 5.6. That lens has a longer 'reach" and according to reports at A mount camera websites also has slightly better optics. However, all this said, there aren't many better alternatives to this lens or the 55-300 mm lens at this price point. The Tamron or Zeiss f 2.8 lenses in this focal length have superior optics and perhaps faster focus but will cost 2 - 3 times as much. If your husband shoots jpegs, be sure he adjusts the color temperature before taking pictures under gym lights. If he shoots RAW format, he can adjust the color temperature during processing.JOHN S : Ok. No claiming to be an expert in any way shape or form, but have a couple of thoughts. 1. Have you tried using the "sports" setting on the "Scene" selector? That may offer the help you need without a lens change. If you are going to go with a new lens, and low-light/no flash is a consideration, a lower f number lens may be a help (but, alas, they usually cost more money). I have had no problems with Sony lenses, but they tend to be a bit pricy. While it is an older lens, i found a Minolta AF 70-210mm f/4 lens at a garage sale that I have had fun playing with. Nice color rendition and focus, but a little slower on jAF than new lenses. Finally, if there is a camera store near where you live, you might see if they have any lenses on consignment that will mate with your camera body. That way, you can rent and try a couple before you commit to a purchase. Hope all that helps. JohnJOHN S : Can you tell me a couple of things first? What lens (or lenses) do you currently use; and how far is a "fair distance"? (20 ft, 40 ft, etc.) I can give you better feedback with the above info. John
Shopper : DOES THIS LENS FIT SONY 5000E MOUNT ?CHRISTIAN L : No. The DT 55-200 mm f4-5.6 is an A mount lens. It will work with Sony A mount SLRs and older Minolta digital single lens reflex cameras. There might be an adapter available for it to work with an E-mount camera.THOMAS F : I would say no but. The 5000E has a different mount than the alpha mount. That is indicated by the 'E'. There are adapters available. However, if you want autofocus, you must buy Sony's which is very bulky and expensive. If you're willing to manually focus, there are several relatively inexpensive alpha-to-E mount adapters available. Those are also not as bulky. If you don't own the alpha 55-200, I'd dig up the extra cash and get the E-mount 55-210. It''s a nice lens.HAN K : Yes it doesBILL T : Sorry, I do not know.

SAL 502002 E-mount lens

I bought quite a while ago. I recently traded it in along with my A99M2 and A77M2 because I switched to Sony A7R V. While I had the lens I enjoyed using it. The pictures are sharp and great travel lens.

Adorama is a delight to deal with!

I purchased zoom lens as a very last minute Christmas gift for my daughter. I was concerned about whether the lens would be the proper fit for her camera and how Adorama would be to deal with. I am very pleased to say that both the lens and Adorama were perfect! I am so glad I found this company for our future camera needs!!

Light but not Sharp

This lens doesn't have full compatibility with A77M2 and A99M2.

Good value

I like using the lens on my Sony A200. I can now get to photograph actual landscapes from distance since I only had the default kit lens. My only issue is that the lens I bought with a filter kit. The filters are fine but the polarizing lens won't allow the hood, which came with the lens, to be installed. the knurled ring around the polarizing filter was to large to allow installation. The fallacy of buying online without actually seeing if the devices will work together.

Looking forward to trying it out

I bought this lens in preparation for a forthcoming holiday. Although I have yet to try it in the field, I am impressed by the quality and operation of the lens. It enhances the capability of my Alpha 55 camera and looks good without being too bulky to carry around and is very easy to fit and change.

Reasonable kit lens.

This lens came as a kit lens with my Alpha 58 SLT. It has useful range and is good for general photography. It is not the sharpest out there but it is not the most expensive. A good general zoom to have in the bag.

Good Lens

This lens produces outstanding images with my A55 camera. However, zooming in and out is not very smooth. This should not be in a lens of otherwise high quality. Quality control slipped on this one.

Excellent Value

I bought this to replace/augment an older minolta 100-300mm lens that was pretty soft. This has become my primary lens since I shoot mainly outdoors. I love that it's fast with the AF and produces nice crisp photos with good color. I rarely experience the AF "hunting" like some lenses do in lower light. There are times I wish I had a bit more reach with it, and when wanting to zoom in close I'm often unable to get as tight as I want since you have to be at least 3.5ft from your subject. Those are minor nits considering the capabilities and price of this lens. For the price, I couldn't be happier with this lens.

GREAT LENS.

Lens has great quality and versitility of zoom for open field shots and just about anything else. The autofocus is very quiet and therefore great for wildlife. You can't get a better lens for even twice the price. (The pics look much better than here.)

Great Purchase and Great Lens!

This is a great portable telephoto lens. The image quality is pretty solid; especially considering its pricepoint. It's a very reliable lens, there aren't very many cons. The optics aren't bad either, light fall off isn't too bad, bokeh isn't bad, and overall, the image quality isn't bad. For its pricepoint, there really is nothing to complain about. I absolutely recommend buying this if you want an ultra portable telephoto lens.

I love this lens

I received this lens with my new a55 as an early Christmas gift and I absolutely love it. I am an amateur photographer and I have a lot to learn, and so far, I feel like this is the perfect lens for me to learn with. I have been able to take a wide range of photos with this lens; including portraits, landscapes, flowers, action shots, and even food. Although you have to be rather far from a subject to get a good shot, and it doesn't always focus as quickly as I want it to (which is only sometimes frustrating when I'm taking pictures of my step kids who are constantly on the go) I would say this is a perfect lens for any beginner or a good day to day lens for anyone. Also, the photo quality on this site do not do these photo's justice because they actually came out to be much more vivid and pristine.

Lens hood does not lock into place

It's a shame that the enjoyment of using the lens is interrupted every half hour when the lens hood falls off into the dirt. The provided lens hood doesn't lock into place, so simply walking around holding the camera is enough to loosen the lens hood until (surprisingly soon, and surprisingly often) it falls off the lens. So far I haven't figured out how to work-around this problem - because the front lens element turns when focusing, simply taping the lens hood onto the lens won't work. (Similarly, it's a little annoying that no lens-cap-strap is provided to attach the lens-cap to the body of the camera. A lens-cap-strap was provided with the simple DSC-H9 camera - why not with this kit zoom lens?).

New acquisition, but great choice

Just got this (12/25/10) so its a bit early. So far have been using it in wildlife/bird photos and its performed quite well. Very well built and looks like it will last a long time. Made some excellent shots of difficult birds.

Nice all around lense

Overall this is a great lense. I am just getting into the hobby and am very surprised of the photos I have been able to take with this lense. My father is a die hard Nikon person and he is impressed with the quality of photos I am producing with the 200mm on my A-330. For the price, buy it. You will not be upset. The included photos do not do it justice. They are actually much clearer and do not have the grainy fuzz you see here.

Learn about the Sony 55-200mm F4.0-5.6 SAM Telephoto Zoom Lens

Any serious cinematographer or photographer will tell you that you can produce some of the most beautiful possible images with telephoto lenses. But let’s talk specifics: the Sony 55-200mm F4.0-5.6 SAM Telephoto Zoom Lens is more than just an ordinary telephoto lens. As a telephoto lens for your DSLR camera, it’s designed to provide even the most casual photography events with a lens capable of astonishing clarity, zoom, and more. What do you say we at Adorama zoom in on this fine piece of photographic technology to see exactly what makes the Sony 55-200mm so effective?

  • Astounding zoom ability. Where else to begin? A telephoto zoom lens like the Sony 55-200mm has to have some serious zooming power if it’s going to attract your attention. And more than that: it’s going to need to deliver zoomed-in photographs with brilliant clarity and beauty. Covering a range of 82.5mm to 300mm telephoto zoom, which comes in at 4x, this zoom lens has everything you could want if you were to photograph wildlife from a distance, or even create a baroque effect on portraits.
  • Auto-focus with power. One of the top-rated features of the Sony 55-200mm is its ability to shift focus automatically and with smoothness and real power. Did we say “power”? Yes, we did: you need an auto-focus with plenty of capacity if it’s going to handle the demands of a telephoto lens of this magnitude. As you shift from 4x zoom and down, you won’t have to worry about your camera keeping up with you. We at Adorama know that’s an important feature of telephoto lenses, especially when photographing live events and wildlife.
  • Interchangeability you can count on. Just saw something that you want to photograph right away, but it’s too far away for your standard lens? It’s time to shift to a telephoto lens. And for that, you’ll need a telephoto lens that delivers on interchangeability, making it easy for you to switch up the zooming power of your camera without the hassle typically associated with such switches. In fact, interchangeability is one of the customers’ top-rated features of this Sony lens.
  • Ease of use. If you’re going to count on a lens’s interchangeability, then you’re also going to need that lens to be lightweight enough to carry with you everywhere, not to mention durable enough to handle the constant travel. Customers have also rated this telephoto zoom lens as excelling in both departments, allowing you to securely store your Sony telephoto lens (with front and rear lens caps, which come provided) and not give it a second thought. That’s the kind of reliability professional photographers need in their lenses.
  • Versatility. It’s about more than zooming in and zooming out with this kind of lens—you also have to trust that the lens will consistently provide you with the crisp, high-quality pictures you’re looking for. Customers rate this camera best for using in wildlife, sports and action, weddings, video, and even landscape and scenery, giving you the ability to use it no matter what the occasion calls for.

Ideal both for first-time buyers and for professional photography enthusiasts, the Sony 55-200mm F4.0-5.6 SAM Telephoto Zoom Lens is a high-quality, auto-focusing lens that will give you access to many more shots than your usual lens is capable of. Rated best for wildlife, landscapes, weddings, live action, low light, video, and possibly the best lens for sports photography, everyone from photo enthusiasts to pro photographers. Procure your Sony 55-200 today.

Sony 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Features

  • SteadyShot INSIDE In-Camera Image Stabilization: A major reason for its compact, lightweight lens design is the benefit of SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilization, enabling lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms
  • DT Lens Design: A more compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in some Sony a (alpha) DSLR cameras
  • Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM): The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto focus (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens
  • ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass: To reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors
  • Circular Aperture: Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect
