Review Summary

Bought this as I wanted to see what the best telephoto Prime from Sony was like. Ive owned Nikon and Olympus top quality telephoto primes & this Sony one stacks up against them very well. You get what you pay for sometimes. Photos attached here are low resolution - full quality from an A7R IV and A9mk3 are stunning.

The 200-600mm Sony lens is so good that I have always wondered just how much better the prime could be. Well now I know - and it is better in every way. I primarily photograph birds so being able to use the teleconverters and still get great quality is a real plus. The difference in f stop actually works out to the difference between getting some shots and not, even in the heady days of high ISO and DeNoise. The lens is surprisingly light in the hand as it is so well balanced. The zoom lens still has its place in my kit bag, but the prime will definitely be my main lens from now on.

The very best for bird and wildlife photography. Optically brilliant, super-fast focusing, working seamlessly with the Sony mirrorless camera system. Competitive or beats out all other mirrorless systems for lenses in this category.

I've only had my 600F4 for 3 weeks but I've been at one with it from day one. The sharpness is first class as you would expect at this price point. What impresses me most is the beautiful balance. Whilst its around 800g more than a 200-600 6.3 it feels the same. I use this lens almost exclusively hand held for birds in flight.

I've hade the lens now for two weeks,I know it's expensive, but it's certainly a wonderful lens, and the results are outstanding,

I have been using this lens for 4 weeks now. I mostly shoot small birds at around 5 to 10 meters distance, always at f4. The majority of shots are in at the sensor pixel sharpness limit on the birds eye and that is hand held. I simply cannot believe how good this setup is.

If you know, you know. The 600 f4 is unparalleled for its uses in wildlife photography. I have already taken this on a few trips and, while it's big and heavy with a long min focus distance, the photos it helps produce are beyond worth it. If you can afford a 600 f4 and you know why you need it, you must have it.

Built quality is second to none. Autofocus is fast and accurate on the A1. No complaints other than the $$,$$$.¢¢ price tag and the specialized camera bag you?ll have to get. It nearly fits inside my Atlas adventure backpack.

Amazing photo quality, sharpness, and speed. Beautiful bokeh effect. I do find it a bit heavy to use or move fast enough for animals moving quickly. Definitely will take some practice and will need stamina to carry it around. I highly recommend this lens.

Absolutely love this lens! I was on the fence for a long time, but glad I finally just got it and I feel lucky that I was actually able to find one to purchase! The lens is huge, but it?s not as heavy as I was expecting, it?s extremely sharp, super fast and I really like the manual focus ring. It also comes in a nice carrying case. If you?re looking to take your photography to the next level, this just might be the lens you?re looking for.

Changed my 200-600 for this. I certainly haven't regretted it, this lens is perfect for my wildlife photography. I use it with my A1 which is the ideal combination. A fast lens with superfast focus and amazing bokeh. Resulting images have super intricate detail. I cannot fault the lens.

This lens is tack sharp, and the dual linear motors make for super fast autofocus. Lens is much lighter and more balanced than any other 600mm I have ever worked with. These benefits are what makes the cost of this lens justifiable for me. I shoot 90% of my images hand held and I am shooting erratic fast moving subjects. This lens allows me to get the job done, and not get beat up in the process. For me - this lens is a dream come true.

It?s amazing! Paired with the a1 it?s simply perfection. Best 600F4 I?ve ever used. I?m shocked how balanced and easy to handhold it is. I also have the Sony 200-600 and while it?s good it doesn?t touch the optical performance and speed of the 600GM

Sharp, bright, robust, lightning-quick autofocus work and really light. You can not imagine that 600mm f/4 can be that light - no problem to handhold for long periods of time when working with wildlife, which is nice that you do not need to carry a tripod/monopod for every time.

You won't be sorry indulging your love of Wildlife Photography with this lens. Paired with the a1, you have an insanely great setup that's incredibly light for what you're getting. I didn't think it possible to surpass the performance of my 400mm f2.8, but this bad boy does it! This is quite simply Sony's greatest long lens, focusing quick as a wink, even on the eye of a small Garden Bird. . I haven't yet bothered to mount the teleconverters that I use with my 400mm f2.8 Gmaster. Close cropping in Lightroom gives me fantastic detail and the equivalent of 1200mm.

I've had this lens for about a month and have used it quite a bit. For a large lens it is very easy to handle. I thought I'd have to shoot it on a tripod or at least a monopod but most of my shots have been hand held. The lens is really sharp. The detail is fantastic and the backgrounds just melt away. Worth every penny!

coming from a Nikon 500F4E FL ED and thought about adding the Nikon 600 but way too heavy. did hours of research and it turns out Sony has the best Pro camera/lens combo and is at least two generations ahead of the competition. decided to add the ultimate setup (A9II + 600GM) for action and birds. the Sony FE 600 GM is as light as my 500mm and is excellent beyond words! if you want the very best, this is it.

I have been using this lens for a month and it is simply astounding. I have been using it with the A9ii and A7R4 and the focus is extremely precise anywhere from closest focus distance to subjects hundreds of feet away. Color correction is superb and the bokeh is pure butter. This lens works great with the 1.4x converter, as seen in the attached photographs of bears. Weight and balance for a 600 f4 is as good as it gets.

I've owned many telephoto lenses in the past. This Sony out-performs all others in every aspect! The weight alone is insane, and is easily manageable using handheld. I've used this lens with the A7r IV and A9, and performs beautifully! The image quality is outstanding with some of the best Bokeh I've seen in a telephoto lens.

Achieve a bright aperture and a super telephoto length within a lightweight design with the new Sony FE 600mm F4.0 GM OSS lens. The Sony FE 600mm F4.0 GM OSS lens features a wide f/4 maximum aperture for a better depth of field and allows you to shoot under unfavorable lighting conditions. This wide aperture is complemented by the signature Sony G Master series 11-blade circular aperture which renders high-quality and soft-edged bokeh. The interior lens surfaces have a Nano AR Coating that helps suppress reflections and minimizes lens flare and ghosting, enhancing image quality further. The lens also has two extreme dynamic (XD) linear motors which allow for better subject tracking and quiet autofocus, as well as a built-in high-performance Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that minimizes image blur, especially when shooting handheld. This new lens is ideal when used with compact E-mount camera bodies for better handling and mobility as it weighs only 6.70lbs. Experience superior telephoto capabilities without the bulk with the Sony FE 600mm F4.0 GM OSS lens.
Sony has just upped the offerings in its growing mirrorless full-frame lineup thanks to today’s announcements of two new lenses: the new super-telephoto 600mm F4 G Master prime lens, and the FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens...READ MORE
A weight of just 6.70 lb, including tripod mount, makes this lens balance ideally with compact, lightweight E-mount camera bodies for easy handling and control. Smooth, precise panning is possible handheld or monopod-mounted.
An exacting G Master optical design uses three fluorite elements to suppress chromatic aberration, which can be problematic in telephoto lenses. A large XA (extreme aspherical) element is also included to eliminate onion-ring bokeh. Each lens is individually calibrated to achieve the ideal balance between resolution and bokeh.
When the FULL TIME DMF switch is ON, manual focus is automatically engaged when the focus ring is operated, even in the AF-C mode. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image Stabilization includes MODE 2 for panned shots, and MODE 3 for dynamic sports or wildlife action. MODE 3 also provides a more stable viewfinder image for easier framing.
