This is so well built! Image quality great. The weight for me was too much at 77. I was so disappointed. I really thought I could handle it. I don't believe anyone would be disappointed

I purchased my Sony a7 iv with a 24 -> 70 mm, which is the bread and butter, but was lacking a lens that would grab those images a bit further away. I toyed up the Sony 70 -> 200 and the 70 -> 300. I opted for the 70-300 for the extra reach, which is not vast, but it gives me that extra for a wide variety of applications. I am very pleased with the G Lens, at a price I could justify. I am very happy with it. I have used it for a variety of Astro, Landscape and Nature and cannot fault it. If you want the extra reach, I would recommend it. Size and weight wise, very similar to the 24-70 G.

I got this lens to take away on holiday where I didn't want to take my GM 100-400 or my G200-600. The idea was to have a lens that was as close as possible to an all-round lens. A lens for landscape, buildings, wild life if the opportunity came up and any thing else. Has it done this? Well the wild life side yes and the rest is yet to be put to the test. I like the ability to lock the lens at 70mm for transport and the feel of the lens is comfortable. What I would have liked is a tripod foot as the lens is a fair weight and I don't want to stress the body of the camera. I have solved this with an aftermarket tripod collar, which means its completely removable. That's it for now once back from the trip I may update this review giving an idea of how the lens performed and may be add an image or two. We'll see.

Bought A7iii body and lens in March registered products and awaited voucher for next lens (still waiting) ended up buying this lens without the benefit of the voucher. This was reported through the dealer who was very helpful and Sony sent out a voucher code which turned out to be invalid. In the end I bought the lens and am very happy with the camera and both lenses but not at all with Sony. Will wait to see if the cash back comes from the second lens. Fingers crossed

I have used this with an a7r2 and a7r4, and shoot mostly flowers, birds, and other wildlife, along with some portraits and landscapes, always hand held. When I get the focus right, I have been amazed at how sharp this lens can be, even centers at 300mm. Much lighter and easier to manage than Sony's other telephoto choices, it is truly a perfect balance of size and performance for me.

I have had this lens for a little over a year and enjoy it's almost my 1st choice in any scenario. I want to find out if I bought 300 mm or 400 mm lens which should I get and why one over what im using now.

I bought this lens after comparing with a similar product from a competitor at the store and end up buying Sony because the color is better in comparison and the build quality is more solid. After using it for a bit, I also noticed the performance of the stability is excellent at maximum zoom.

This lens is fast, sharp, and light. On my A7RII it handles both the massive full-frame resolution and the ultra-sharp cropped-frame function.

whenever I invest in a new lens I worry that I will get sufficient use to warrant the cost. However, this lens is proving to be a sound investment as it is light enough to have in my bag whenever I travel or go hiking - ie with my 24-70 on the camera. I also use it weekly for sporting and wildlife trips out. So far, I’ve been impressed with sharpness and ease of focusing throughout its range. Here’s 3 examples:

bought this zoom to have a nice reach on wildlife during hiking while maintaining a compact form in my backpack or on a strap with the lock on . focus is fast and images are great. I think this lens and a 16-35 covers all I need for nature photography. image quality, the 70-200 F/4 produces crispier images bu lacks in reach.

Brought this about a month ago - wanted that extra bit of reach for landscapes, and the small amount of sports photography I do for my baseball team. Considered the 70-200 F4 but couldn't justify the extra expense, bulk and weight when I don't really need the constant F4 aperture. Used it a few times and it's performed well, you get good sharpness up to 200mm, a little soft towards 300mm (and the one time I've shot distant city lights at blue hour) but overall I'm happy. Did well on my A7iii when I shot some baseball, was able to use a fast shutter speed and ISO 500-1000 dependent on light to freeze the action. Clearly anyone looking for a specialist sports lens would consider one of the other options Sony offer but I was really pleased with the results. Couple of cons - not sure how well sealed it is, worried it may have sucked in a little dust / grit already. Also wish it came with a tripod collar, it's a big heavy lens and very long when extended, hope it'll last on the A7iii mount. Won't carry it with me on every shoot but glad I have it.

Perfect for my style and use. Sports and action, a little wildlife and landscapes. The lens is acceptably sharp at all focal lengths. It is fast focusing paired with my Sony A7III. Perfect for my needs at this time. It’s not a heavy lens but a tripod collar would be beneficial in some circumstances which Sony unfortunately does not manufacture.

Sharper than you think
By Luccombe L.
I bought this about 6 weeks ago. The stabilisation works a dream. Obviously not pin sharp in low light at 300mm. But, given good light, it is very acceptable at 300mm. Probably limited indoors, but for bird photography etc...it's great
Compact fast lens with a cutting edge
By Chezjj
I received this lens 2 weeks ago. I've taken more than one thousand images with it in this short period of time, using it with both the a7 and the a6000. Fits and balances well with both cameras though I prefer its handling with the a7. Weight and size of the lens are just right in my opinion. Optically, it performs to a high level of performance. Build quality is excellent.
Full-frame E-mount Telephoto Lens
The full-frame E-mount FE 70-300mm F4.5 - 5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens features a state-of-the-art optical design including four aspherical glass elements, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and Sony's Nano AR coating, which all work together to effectively suppress spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration. Together with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, ensures beautiful high-resolution results for both still and video shooting.
Full-frame 70-300mm G Series F4.5-5.6 G Telephoto zoom
Sony's G-Series lenses are designed for maximum descriptive power, maintaining excellent peripheral light characteristics and maximizing contrast even at the edges of the frame. The SEL70300G offers high zoom and magnification for full-frame E-mount cameras equivalent to 70-300mm F4.5-5.6. In addition, when mounted to APS C cameras, the focal range can reach 105-450mm offering reach beyond previously available E-mount lenses.
Nano AR Coating with nano-precision structure
Sony's original Nano AR Coating technology produces a lens coating that features a precisely defined regular nano-structure that allows accurate light transmission while effectively suppressing reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The reflection suppression characteristics of the Nano AR Coating are superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, including coatings that use an irregular nano-structure, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization
Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to reduce camera shake, particularly in telephoto, close-up, and low-light situations where camera shake is most likely to affect image quality. OSS makes it easier to capture clear images when shooting handheld. A convenient on/off switch - on the lens itself - can be used to control internal image stabilization which speeds up operation as there is no need to access the camera menu.
Class-leading close-up focusing capability less than 3' (0.9m)
The SEL70300G telephoto zoom lens also features class-leading close-up performance, with a minimum focusing distance of less than 3 feet (0.9m) and a maximum magnification of 0.31x, making it an ideal choice for tele-macro photography. This outstanding close-up performance also factors into the lens' excellent corner-to-corner sharpness.
9-blade circular aperture
The 9-blade circular aperture forms a nearly perfect circle to create a pleasing and beautifully round background defocus or bokeh effect, especially when the lens is wide open.
2x ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements
As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. To counter such problems, 2x ED glass elements are included in the SEL70300G. It dramatically improves chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings.
4x Aspherical elements control spherical aberration and coma
The SEL70300G has an innovative optical design to achieve clear, high-quality images by effectively minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. A double-gauss configuration effectively suppresses field curvature and distortion, while a four precisely placed aspherical element control spherical aberration and coma for excellent optical characteristics right out to the image periphery. An aspherical element in a new optical design that controls all types of aberration (spherical, coma, distortion), rendering the subject with superior sharpness.
Sophisticated, solid and reliable
The exterior metal barrel and sealed buttons and rings Deliver outstanding operability and reliability in a design that resists the intrusion of dust and moisture which helps to ensure reliable operation in harsh outdoor conditions. Designed for reliability in a wide range of environments, the metal mount adds a sophisticated feel as well as solid durability.
Linear actuator achieve fast, smooth, quiet autofocus
A linear actuator and an inner focus mechanism are used for focus drive, resulting in fast, smooth, quiet focus operation. Lens noise pickup can be a problem when shooting movies, but with this lens operation is so smooth and quiet that autofocus can be used for shooting movies as well as stills.
Enhanced operability w/ direct control
The SEL70300G features convenient direct buttons and switches to enhance the ease and operability. These include a focus hold button, focus mode switch, focus range limiter, Optical SteadyShot switch and zoom lock switch.
Focus hold button
Once you've adjusted focus to where you want it, holding this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera's custom settings.
Focus range limiter
This function allows you to set a limit on the focusing range which can save you time during auto focus operation - as the lens will not 'hunt' through the entire focusing range. Selections are Infinite (infinity) to 3 meters for medium to distant focusing, and FULL for full-range focusing.
Zoom lock switch
The zoom lock switch prevents unwanted lens extension during transportation.
Focus-mode switch
A conveniently located switch allows manual or auto focus to be easily selected while viewing through the camera's viewfinder.
