The lens is a great lens the reason for the 2 star review is there is something mechanically wrong with the lens, it works for about 100 Photos then the aperture blades completely close, and I know longer can control the f stop in manual mode very frustrating.

Having shot the 85 1.8 for 6 years, I pulled the trigger on the new 1.4 gem. The slightly faster 1.4 aperture doesn't tell the whole story. Better build quality, moisture resistant, more responsive AF, sharper, and exquisite tonal fidelity. Especially coupled with the newer Sony bodies (I shoot the A7RV and A7CR) the responsiveness is fantastic.

What's not to like - very sharp, well built medium telephoto....and the price is reasonable (for a Sony G Lens). Essential kit.

I recently changed brands. I am extremely happy with this lens and camera combination. The sharpness wide open at F1.4 the color smoothness and rendition is world class and frankly exceeds other brands.

From all the 85mm lenses I have this is the best of the best. Beautiful colours, beautiful bokeh, beautiful sharpness, beautiful everything. Heavy, bulky, slow. I love it.

I first bought this lens because I got a discount and then I was still waiting for my camera to go with it. My A7 IV finally arrived so I could take the lens for a test drive. It is fair to say that this is the oldest in the GMaster series of Sony lenses, therefore its focus speed is not the fastest and it's quite loud (but that's compared to other Sony lenses, it's not all that noisy). The image rendition and sharpness is still excellent, not to mention its beautiful colour rendition which is typical for all the GMaster lenses. It's a great feature because if you choose to use several GMaster lenses in a photoshoot, there would hardly be any difference in colours among them. I also have to appreciate its bokeh. Yes, I admit that I'm crazy about bokeh when shooting portraits. For this reason I appreciate that the lens is f/1.4. The image is sharp even wide open, so no problem here. I also appreciate 11 aperture blades that create the creaminess of the bokeh. To summerize, I don't regret getting this lens by any means. For me it was a new impulse to enjoy the 85mm focal length once again.

A fantastic lens, quick focusing too as I have used it for indoor sports as well as portraits. I give it 4 stars because it's not quite as sharp as the 135 1.8GM

This lens replaced a much loved f1.4 85mm A mount that I was using with the LA-EA5 adapter on my Sony A7R4, pleased it did as this one is sooooo much better in every respect which I was doubtful of, it certainly is deserving of the G Master badge & reputation! Focusing is really fast, bokeh is delicious & even wide open images are sharp. Build feels solid & weather sealing is a must have on lenses. Aperture ring clicks in increments & internal focusing is smooth & precise. This is my absolute favourite lens & bonus, it's not too heavy as a walkaround. With the A7R4 I can switch to APSC mode giving me 127mm reach, very useful feature of the camera meaning I can use this lens as more than an 85mm prime. All in all I love this lens, it's superb.

Really great for interviews, especially like the iris ring. Just wish Sony would hurry up and bring out the 24-70 T3.1 cine lens !!!

In my line of photographic work my go to lens is the 85mm, I recently changed systems over to Sony and purchased the 85mm f1.4 GM lens. This lens is so sharp with beautiful tone rendition and a fast f1.4 aperture. The Bokeh is fabulous from the 11 leaf aperture. This is a Killer lens!! totally recommend this product.

This lense is really good for closeups, strong bokeh, far objects as for pictures as for filming. My favorite one for video shoots while music video filming. Recommended 100% I bought 2nd one for my 2nd camera in order to film on 2 cameras at the same time. Hopefully my review will help you to make best decision;)

Not as impressive as it looks. Pictures are too soft and it hunts for focus eternally in most crucial moments. I am 100% that I cannot use this for weddings. But may be a bad copy. Either way I have returned it. I am sad to have done that though, but just could not keep it. Btw Adorama Customer Service was very awesome. Thank you

Not had this lens for long but absolutely love it. The images are really sharp, as I expected, and the build is chunky so not too long. This balances my mirrorless camera better. I love the neat lens hood. It has a little safety catch that works well. I have lost too many on my travels.

Image quality is superb, but the autofocus could be better. It's fairly slow and noisy, feels a bit clunky. But for the superb image quality it's something that you may feel fine overlooking.

Bought this because I love portraiture and it is a great lens, not as good as I hoped for low light but I’m still getting used to it and the photos are coming out looking very professional.

The lens has focusing lens noise problem that I have never heard before. Sony needs to step up and resolve this problem. On the internet there are countless people complaining about this issue. This is not a cheap lens. (Never had problems like this with NIKON)

85 is one of my favorite focal lengths. This lens delivers in spades on the A7R4. Bigger than the Nikon 85 f/1.4G that I sold.

Superb lens. Fast, sharp. Big and heavy, but you reap the benefits of it, especially on the A7RIV.

I'm happy with this lens - expensive - but good. Cash back is a problem. You have to wait 30 days (hoping we forget maybe?) Then type in serial number and photography serial number etc. They seem to look for any tiny reason not to pay out cashback. Bit shabby since we pay a lot to become Sony customers.

I love this lens so far. I switched from the 85 1.8, and while that's a great lens, this one is excellent!

Love the photos that I produce with this lens. The only complain I have is the AF is a bit slow. Great for posing models but not for moderate to fast moving subjects. And price is a little expensive.

It is a touch slower to eye focus than the 70-200 2.8 but it produces gorgeous images.

probably the best 85 available
By BAzzFreeman
This is probably the best portrait 85mm available right now. The resolving ower is designed far past what todays sensors are capable of which should give it a long useful life. It's a little expensive bu the cost of ownership should even out.
Very nice focal length
By Peter4862
Great focal length for head to full portrait. The f1.4 aperture draws my subject out from the diffused background.
Full-frame G Master telephoto prime lens
Portrait performance reaches a new pinnacle with astonishing resolution plus bokeh of unmatched beauty. This 85mm F1.4 portrait lens renders infocus areas with unequalled resolution while the background dissolves into the smoothest, lushest bokeh imaginable. All of this is by design, supported by manufacturing and testing technology that only Sony can provide, for new dimensions of photographic and cinematographic expression.
Designed to achieve 50 line pairs/mm resolving power
It is not easy to achieve spatial frequency of 50 lines pairs per millimeter at a lens's widest aperture, but that is Sony's baseline for G Master design. Unprecedented resolution and other demanding design parameters yield outstanding reproduction of the most detailed subjects and scenes with superior contrast throughout every frame. G Master resolution is simply the highest in its class.
Previously unattainable surface precision
Built with three aspherical elements including a newly developed and essential ingredient for astonishing resolution - is a new XA (extreme aspherical) lens element with better that 0.01-micron surface precision. The extremely precise XA element reduces aberration and delivers the ultimate resolution throughout the entire zoom range and aperture range, as well as from corner to corner of all image files.
Constant F1.4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field
Constant F1.4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field regardless of the focal range you choose to zoom to. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
11-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh
Complementing the performance of the XA element are the first 11-blade circular aperture ever implemented in an ± lens, and exacting spherical aberration adjustment for each individual lens. The result is enchantingly soft-edged bokeh that is a hallmark of the Sony G Master series. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing, polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. ± lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
SSM (Super Sonic Wave Motor) for fast, quiet and precise focusing
Focus precision is vital when working with high-resolution images and a narrow depth of field. A ring SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) yields the power and precision necessary to accurately and swiftly position one of the heaviest focusing groups in any interchangeable lens for mirrorless cameras, and a new multi-sensor system plus high-speed data processing provides the instantaneous feedback required for flawless autofocus precision.
Nano AR Coating
Sony's original Nano AR Coating technology minimizes flare and ghosting, for dynamic range that achieves lifelike detail and gradation with advanced camera sensors. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Dust and moisture resistant for robust reliability
Sony's standard lens sealing is augmented by a lens mount seal that maximizes resistance to dust and moisture for reliable operation in challenging environmental conditions.* Additional details like rubberized rings that are easy to operate in low temperatures, a zoom lock that prevents unwanted lens extension during transport, and a hood lock button, all add up to professional control and convenience.
ED and Super ED glass reduces flare and ghosting
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and Super ED glass elements take axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration due to differences in magnification out of the picture, maximizing resolution and bokeh while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration.
Advanced simulation techniques control bokeh right from design
The G Master series elevates resolution to unprecedented heights thanks to new technology specifically developed to accommodate the more exacting tolerances required in the face of continually evolving camera body performance. Sony has applied the most advanced optical technology available in innovative lens elements, optical path design, simulation, testing, and calibration, achieving image detail and sharpness that reveal the essence of every scene and subject.
Instant auto/manual focus selection
Instantly and quickly switch between auto and manual focus via an AM/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you, or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you chose.
