Better Than I Hoped For

This was a recent purchase and one that I had put off for quite a few years, having used my 100-400mm or the 70-200mm Macro for close-up shots. I must say that I am glad that I purchased 90mm Macro ok, it has a bit of a steep learning curve, but that is part of the fun of having a hobby like this.Would I recommend it for sure ??

Not well built

Dropped A7 camera with 90mm lens attached from thigh height, about 2.5' (76cm), and the lens snapped off the body. Four plastic parts are all that was holding this heavy glass to the lens mount of the lens. For the price, I'd expect better construction.

Tack sharp and lovely to use

A very sharp lens with beautiful bokeh, a pleasing colour rendition and no significant aberrations - outstanding optical performance. The 90mm focal length allows for a decent stand off from a macro subject of around 30cm (close to the minimum focusing distance) to allow for any lighting solutions you might want and causes little disturbance to active subjects. A very nice focal length for general photography too and could easily substitute for my 70-200 in many circumstances. On my A6700, the focal length is effectively 135mm, which was a prime I liked very much in my film days. The sliding focusing ring is very clever and works well to switch between AF and MF in a natural way while shooting. AF is fast and quiet and on the A6700, very accurate with spot focus. MF can be a bit touchy for macro but camera movement or a focusing rack is generally easier anyway. The built-in stabilisation is very effective, allowing me to hand-hold when previously I would have needed a support. The lens is not small but handles very nicely and its performance is such that the compromise with portability is easy to make. Well made and marked, this is an obvious choice for anyone interested in great quality macro work.

Finally found a good example

In 2019, I bought two of these brand new which ended up being returned and eventually refunded when the dealer (and Sony) could not find one which was sharp across the entire width of the shot at portrait to landscape distances, even stopped down to f/8. In 2024 I decided to try again with a used lens being offered at a very good price by a main dealer; on testing, it proved to be perfect. And made in 2019! I'm an experienced lens tester and photo magazine technical editor since the mid-1970s so I know my stuff on this. I had been using the Sony SAL A-mount 100mm instead because I found that perfect though not as advanced an optical design. Replaced!

Lens jewellery - a lovely, lovely thing

It is a joy to handle. It has quite an old-school feeling about it, but not too heavy. I have just played aroud with the features so far. The focus limiter swich is a good thing - otherwise it is likely to go a-hunting. I have a product photography job next week for which this lens is ideal.

1:1 Magnification

Bought this to embark on a macro journey. So far satisfactory results but really need a flash set up to maximise its potential. Here are some sample pictures taken without flash.

What a lens, wow!

WHAT A BEAST!!!! Beautiful crisp clear scenery shots, amazing low light focal capability and it's an easy to use/figure out lens all around. I heard many people complaining about the auto focus noise, but I have not experienced it myself. I find it to be quite silent personally. It is however finicky at times and I found myself using manual focus more often than not. The lens itself has got kind of a fixed distance zoom (if that makes any sense), so be aware of that. Example: The picture of my motorcycle, to get it all in frame was taken from about 30' away at night is very poor almost black lighting. Note that when your shooting close up, the slightest twist on manual focus is the distance between miles in comparison (see pic of dog). Its a touchy lense but I feel its well worth the lessons it teaches you. A delicate touch will make all the difference. My advice: Buy this lens & thank me later..... DO IT!

the best macro lens i tried

even, the best proxy lens i ever tried ! i even been able to film a wasp making his clean-up in a such picture quality, colors et details ! i wouldn't had success this with another device ^^ i like especially the large ring that you can "pull" in a way to "MF" on your own way and "pull" again, AF is back, you have nothing else to do, this lens then is very reactiv et versatyl, you can also make some scene in a certain order of the things, it's really one of my favourite lens, thanks guyz to built it !!! :D

May be the sharpest lens I've ever seen

In the last 5 years I have grown to love macro photography. I came from another system with strong macro lens choices. I bought this to go with my A7RV specifically to play with the focus bracketing features and it has not disappointed. The lens feels very nice and the push/pull focus ring is brilliant! Optical steady shot, focus hold and range limiter are just some of the things that showed that Sony took Macro shooters seriously. There really isnt a more feature-loaded macro lens out there from anyone else.

Broken Product - No Support

My product appears to be defective. I tried contacting support, but the robots keep telling me that they will transfer me to an agent and hang up the phone. The chat bot does the same thing. The non-existent support is worse than the broken product. There isn't even an e-mail address to send a request to. Registering the product doesn't open any other support options.

Great image quality

Great image quality and build. However, severe focus breathing and hunting when light is not the best. F/2.8 is of little value when you cannot obtain sharp focus when subject is not fully illuminated. It is a good value for the money when used within its limitations.

Very happy with the sharpness of this lenses for my food photography. However, find it a bit difficult and slow to use manual focus on my RV as well as on the lenses. Need to improve my depth of field as well.

The Sharpness is Amazing

I have several lenses, both Sony and non-Sony, primes and zooms, all of them pretty good, but this lens is in a class of its own. I read all the glowing reviews before I bought it and I now understand why almost all the reviews were so positive and full of praise. The lens is so good I use it, of course for macro, but for everything where a range of 90mm is suitable.

After Five years service the lens just gave up

After five years faithful service the lens just packed up unable to focus or change aperture. Then lens show no signs damage and has not been dropped, I have tried cleaning contacts and tried on several current bodies A7RV , A9 and a6600 nothing...

FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens is great

Apart from being good optically there is also image stabilisation. I also like the Focus button (G) that I have as a focus magnifier. Another neat feature is the ability to easily change from autofocus to manual via the lens ring switch without taking your eye off the shot. A great lens to have for macro nature shots.

About Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS

FEATURED REVIEWS

Great macro lens. Love it!

By profilux

I love this lens. I've been using it exclusively since I got it on my A6000. Macros are fun and portraits are nice and sharp. Decent bokeh with the aperture. AF is decent with it, but would probably be faster on A7's.

Superb lens a must buy!

By Mufftrix

I bought this to partner the A7R II and after using it for a few weeks cannot fault the IQ and it's versatility as obviously a macro lens, but also a general walkabout lens!

Get up close and personal with flowers and tiny objects with this Sony 90mm f/2.8 macro lens. It ensures you can zoom in on fine detail to focus on objects straight in front of the lens for incredibly intimate portraits of flowers and insects at up to 1:1 magnification. The f/2.8 aperture ensures plenty of light gathering even when you're shooting in challenging environments, and it helps todefocus the background for absolute concentration on your subject matter. In addition, because the aperture is circular, you get circular bokeh for a pretty effect when the aperture is wide open.
Advanced technologies in this Sony90mm f/2.8 macro lens include extra-low dispersion glass and high-quality coatings to reduce ghosting, flare and chromatic effects to ensure you get the most out of your photography. Aspherical lens elements correct for distortion and make sure that this Sony lens is light and short.

When you're shooting video, this macro lens has an ultra-quiet direct drive motor so that itfocuses without excessive noise. This ensures you hear more of what's around youand less of the camera. A focus hold button and a focus limiter let you precisely adjust and control this Sony 90mm f/2.8 macro lens so that it locks onto your subject quickly and efficiently.

The full-frame 90mm medium telephoto macro E-mount lens features built in image stabilization for sharp, clear images at up to 1:1 magnification, even when shooting handheld. Advanced optics and coatings with a 9-blade circular aperture deliver exceptionally smooth bokeh that G Lenses are renowned for. Sharp in-focus rendering is achieved with a floating focus mechanism that suppresses aberration equally at all focusing distances, whether the subject is far away or extremely close.

Other advanced technologies, such as the Nano AR Coating and Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, elevate overall performance to an extremely high standard.

Nano AR Coating
Effectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting with Sony's original Nano AR Coating technology. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.

Circular Aperture
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocused points of light. alpha lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Aspherical lens elements
Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped "aspherical" elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.

Internal focusing
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you're using a polarizing filter.

Focus hold button
Once you've adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera's custom settings.

Focus range limiter
This function allows you to set a limit on the focusing range which can save you time during AF operation as the lens will not 'hunt' through the entire focusing range. In macro lenses, this limit can be on either the near or far range (as pictured). In the SEL90M28G, the limit is set on far ranges only.

Sliding Focus Ring
The focus ring slides back and forth to select manual or auto focus which together with a focus hold button, inner focus, and a focus range limiter provide optimum control for macro photography making it easier to shoot insects and other subjects that cannot be approached too closely. Minimal focus breathing and quiet operation are also advantageous for shooting movies.

Lens-based optical image stabilization
Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for quiet, precise focusing
Quiet, precise DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive - employs piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to drive the focus lens groups. In this case two floating focus groups are driven by independent DDSSM systems for precision positioning of the relatively heavy lenses required for macro photography. The DDSSM drive system is remarkably quiet, making it ideal for animal and insect photography, as well as for movies. It also improves the precision of "focus wobble" employed to achieve optimum focus when shooting movies.
