MENG W : How does Location Information Link (GPS info) work with iPhone app PlayMemories? Does the app need to be open all the time? Or can the app stay at background but must firstly launch it every time? Or user doesn't need to explicitly open the app at all?
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?LAURIE P : Underwater photographyJOHN G : excellent reviews and will be used primarily as a travel cameraJoseph M : Wanted a small carry camera. Using this with the sony 20mm 2.8RONALD J : For its compactness, and also where it is a cropped sensor, it will have a 1.5 magnifying effect on my Sony 100-400mm, if I wish to employ it in that way.NEHEMIAH L : Thought of going with an 80d but chose the a6500 because of the in body stabilization, 4K video, better ISO levels, and smaller, lighter, less obtrusive footprint. Will be great for my B roll when I go up to the a7s. Hacks will let me record unlimited, battery grip will extend my run time, and I record my main audio externally so won't need headphone jack on camera. Lenses will be the heartache due to the expensive price.Jeff H : I have shot with the A6000 and A6300. I own the Sony RX100 IV and am adding this one to the arsenal. Looking forward to the touchscreen focus and 5 axis image stabilization.GREG M : Needed a second camera for video and have found that with my Canon I have to shoot in 3x digital zoom mode to avoid moire. This can be shot using focal lengths as is so I can shoot much wider angle footage than when using 3x mode for a given lens. Also, all Canon lenses can be used on this with adapters, and I can use a shift adapter to make any lense a shift lens. Not much down side to this, I do still use the Canon RGB histogram together with the Sony zebras to dial in exposure.

My 1st APC and one of the bast.

My Sony a6500 is one of Sony's top-tier APS-C mirrorless models, with 24MP stills and a video camera with built-in image stabilization. It sits above the similar-looking a6000 that I have before this one, Sony adds a touchscreen capability and stabilization for enthusiasts willing to dig a little deeper into their pockets.

Great Camera with great featue

I bought this camera to persue my hobby. I know it an expensive hobby to pressure but hoby is a hobby. This camera has great features and I am loving it. I had it with 18-135 sony lenses, the feature like image stabilization is great. The only down side is the video can't go over 30 minutes.

Lots of functionality packed into a small device

Solid travel camera, upgrading from the NEX series. Lots of functions, but takes awhile to sort through the menus, or save your favorite shooting profiles. Touch screen super helpful in performing touch focus in photos or videos.

A good buy!

Excellent images. I am finding it difficult to set up as I want but pleased I purchased it. Would welcome some more Sony lenses just for APSC format especially telephoto zoom.

Great camera

The Sony a6500 gets lumped in with entry level cameras, but I dare say it is pretty darn close to semi-pro level. Build quality is good, picture quality is excellent. My only major complaint is how cumbersome and confusing Sony makes their menues and I do feel that the buttons and dials are all kind of jammed too closely together and anyone with larger fingers may have a hard time using it in the fly.

Awesome camera!

This camera takes great pictures right out of the box for this beginner. It has a fast and accurate focus. I love the in body stabilization. The bokeh is nice as well. After searching and reading/watching reviews, I knew that the A6500 was the best camera you can buy for this price point.

Fits my requirements.

I have had this camera for some weeks and am now used to its systems. It was purchased to replace my GX8. To date, apart from the lack of a pivoting viewfinder, I am pleased with its systems and quality. I need something compact & lightweight, for when I need to use a system camera, to fit in rucksacks & bike bags. I like a clean shape with no bulges to catch when removing it from the bag. The image quality is good with a good dynamic range, enabling me to bring out detail in difficult conditions. I would have preferred to have a second knob to control some functions and to add further functions, but I can live with it!

Pocket camera

I shoot photos for a living. Corporate work. When I'm not working I use this camera. Absolutely the best pocket camera (with the 2.8 28mm pancake lens). Not great with battery life so carry a spare.

Great low light and fast focus

This is not an inexpensive camera but it is a great little camera for a crop sensor. It does pretty good in low light photography and video which is why I went with this one.

A step change

I have had the camera a couple of months and have now had chance to use it in anger. It is an upgrade from my Nikon D3200. It has overcome the lack of ISO performance, the lack of critical focus due to lack of lens calibration, gives me image stabilization. Then there are all the other bits like you can see what depth of field you are getting and the exposure rendering on the image before you press the button. Ability to detect and focus on the subjects eye, I have some amazingly sharp portraits as a result. Small Negatives/ opportunities to improve I expected it to use a lot of battery power to drive the view finder and so bought a spare battery as you do. However out of the box I found there was no separate battery charger. The camera was the charger and could not be used for hours whilst charging the battery, after paying all that for the camera I thought it a bit off to buy a separate charger. Infrared remote release; The Nikon has the sensors front and back this does not. So if you are shooting landscapes from a tripod and naturally stand behind you have to reach around the camera to get the remote to work. We all don't want to use the remote to take selfies! Instructions; Your products come with a vast amount of paper but finding the bit in your language takes ages and then it's not comprehensive. It was a few weeks before I found what I needed to know on the internet and I still have not managed to get it to work with my Sony Experia phone!

It is an excellent camera

It is an excellent camera. I was looking for a versatile compact camera with a lens for easy handling during travel. I have found one and am very happy. Adorama is a reputable company to do business with as evident from my experience. The shipment box arrived all busted and appeared to have sticky hands gotten inside. Fortunately, the camera and the lens kit was untouched. I immediately reported to Adorama customer service about the incident. They agreed to send me the missing items which arrived safely. I am pleased with doing business with Adorama.

Pretty good mirrorless solution

As a lifelong Nikon shooter whose back is not what it once was, I was looking for a travel solution that would get me close to the results I can achieve with my D750. Sony's A6500 is a very good performer in many regards. Menus are acceptable and there are enough customizable buttons to make most important choices rapidly accessible. It is ergonomically well-designed and light enough to carry comfortably. Face recognition is very strong, commonly achieving tack-sharp results. Video output is excellent. However the A6500 falls short in its ability to render some colors faithfully, in particular running slightly yellow/green in skin tones. AF is strong most of the time, although with the 18-135 zoomed to its longest settings, sometimes it fails to find focus at all for a few seconds. Outdoors the EVF's display is duller than that of a DSLR's TTL display, making shooting a little less enjoyable. I have also had a difficult time coaxing dynamic range out of deep shadows in AWR (raw) files using Adobe Camera raw, compared to the output of my D750, to a greater extent than I would have expected, even allowing for the Sony's smaller sensor. Overall I like working with this camera, but think it has a bit farther to go before it can compete with standard DSLR features.

Lite and great images.

Only owned the a6500 a short time, but easier and more versatile to use than my older DSLR. Easy to use for street shots, videos, etc and many features found on more expensive cameras. I have been a photographer for many year, this is a great camera for a beginner or pro. Takes a little time to adjust to the smaller size and learn features to fully use this camera. Worth it!

Some limitations

No video review here. This purchase was an upgrade from 6300 to get the badly needed IBIS feature. With 6300 I was unable to get enough steady action pictures at tele end of 24-240 lens. It is my workhorse lens on both APS-C and FF cameras. However, the AF focus lock has not improved. Difficulty to pick up and hold on to subjects moving in busy background feels the same like with 6300. Also, at tele end and distant subjects, the camera sometimes fixes the focus at never-land. Out of curiosity, I tried to figure out what distance the camera is focused on, but could not find any. Looks like in these instances the lens is focusing nowhere. To correct it, I have to refocus on closer subject, let go and then try again at distant subject. So, just like with 6300, I am losing some action tele shots. Just for different reason. Working with open aperture to help the AF technology does not seem to improve the situation. F 6.3 at 240mm tele end is an equivalent of about F 10 on APS-C sensor. That might be too much for the 6500 AF system to handle even in bright outdoors. Switching to manual focus in a hurry is not an option. Today’s lenses are focusing electronically. With tele lenses that means too much focus hunting that slows down my manual adjustments. With non-tele lenses no such problems. However, I bought this body as a backup for my FF while doing action photos with tele zooms. Because of AF problems, I do not bother anymore. For backups in shorter distances, non-action photos and for general use the RX100v5 is better option for me.

About Sony a6500

PRO REVIEW by Prince McClinton, Content Creator and Entrepreneur

"The a6500 has many of Sony's attractive capabilities packed into a small camera body. It's a great solution for someone who wants a piece of gear that they can bring on their travels to capture quality 4K footage and photos. One thing that has always impressed us with this small camera is its ability to shoot 11fps in continuous shooting, faster than its a7 series full frame brothers."

Sony a6500 Features

  • Dust and moisture resistance
  • Tough magnesium alloy body and robust lens mount
  • Silent shooting
  • New menu interface
  • PlayMemories Camera Apps™
  • File Name setting
  • Location Information Link
  • One-touch remote/One-touch sharing
  • Priority Set in AWB
  • Enhanced Remote Camera Control function

24.2 MP1 Exmor® CMOS image sensor

The α6500 features an APS-C image sensor with approx. 24.2 effective megapixels plus thin wiring layer and large photodiode substrate for light collection efficiency. Combined with BIONZ X™ image processing engine, the image sensor achieves a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200 with low noise. The sensor’s quick-transmission copper wiring layer helps the camera to shoot movies in 4K and Full HD at 120fps (100fps)

425 phase-detection

425 phase-detection

With 425 focal plane phase-detection AF points helping to provide distinctively wide and dense AF point coverage, the α6500 focuses accurately, efficiently and reliably on subjects throughout the frame. Also, High-density Tracking AF Technology seamlessly activates AF points to cover and track subjects moving within frame with unerring precision.

Fast Hybrid AF

Fast Hybrid AF

The α6500 features the world's fastest (0.05 sec.) AF speed. Such speed is achieved by integrating the Fast Hybrid AF’s autofocusing performance plus the BIONZ X™ image processing engine’s highly efficient, accurate handling of information. This makes for extraordinarily fast, accurate AF and tracking performance when shooting movies or stills. (1) Point of focus (2) Contrast-detection AF (3) Phase-detection AF

Continuous shooting

Faster internal processing and a higher-capacity buffer memory now allow up to 307 images (over 36 seconds) of high-speed continuous shooting.

Continuous shooting
4555Sony_a6500_-4_32391.png

Clearly capture moving subjects with high-speed continuous shooting at up to 11fps (Hi+). Or choose among three speeds up to 8fps (Hi), for live-view continuous shooting with very little lag on the EVF or LCD screen ― it’s practically as immediate as shooting with an optical viewfinder.

4555Sony_a6500_-5_01150.png

The α6500 compensates for five types of camera shake, extending opportunities to shoot steadier still images and movies. The new high-accuracy gyro sensor provides an image stabilization effect equivalent to a 5-steps-faster shutter speed.

4555Sony_a6500_-6_69361.png

Touch Focus makes focus point selection more intuitive ― simply use a finger to touch the LCD touchscreen at the point of the image that you want to focus on. The Touch Pad function lets you shift the focus point smoothly by swiping a finger on the touchscreen, even while viewing the viewfinder.

4555Sony_a6500_-7_29973.png

K movie recording in the Super 35 mm format with full pixel readout and no pixel binning allows approx. 2.4 times as much information as is basically required for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). Data this rich is, in fact, equivalent to 6K data, so it clearly conveys exceptionally high resolution in 4K images.

XGA OLED Tru-Finder™

The α6500 introduces a high-contrast, high-resolution, high-visibility XGA OLED Tru-Finder™. It reproduces darkness and color in very fine detail, for clear, smooth views of scenes and tracking of subjects. You can select either 120 (100fps) or 60fps (50fp) frame rate for use of this viewfinder.

Eye AF

Eye AF

The α6500 features the Eye AF function that detects an eye and focuses on it with pinpoint accuracy even when shooting with a fast lens with aperture fully open and therefore with shallow depth of field. Eye AF also works in AF-C mode.

Lock-on AF

Lock-on AF

This function maintains focus on a moving subject automatically. Simply align the target frame and the subject to be tracked. If you lose track of the subject, the camera can detect that subject and resume the Lock-on AF function when the subject reappears on the screen.

Slow and Quick Motion

Up to 5x Slow Motion and up to 60x Quick Motion can be recorded at up to 50 Mbps in high-quality Full HD in camera. You can choose among eight shooting frame rates ranging from 1fps to 120fps (100fps), as well as 24p, 30p (25p), or 60p (50p) recording format.

Slow and Quick Motion

BIONZ X™

The BIONZ X™ image processing engine is supported by newly developed front-end LSI. The image processing algorithm optimized for the image sensor enhances texture reproduction and image clarity while minimizing noise, particularly in the mid-to-high sensitivity range.

BIONZ X™
Gamma Display & Zebra Function

Gamma Display & Zebra Function

With Gamma Display Assist, you can view images with natural contrast. Zebra function simplifies exposure monitoring, especially when shooting in S-Log gamma setting.

AF in Focus Magnifier

AF in Focus Magnifier

You can use autofocus even while enlarging a selected image area on the viewfinder or LCD screen, for finer adjustment of focus.
